Chapter 6 of 15
星学大成
When people in the world investigate the principles of destiny, they often discuss only the twelve Branch Spirits (Earthly Branches), yet for the stems Jia, Geng, Bing, Ren, Yi, Xin, Ding, Gui, as well as Qian, Kun, Gen, and Xun—the Stem Spirits (Heavenly Stems and Four Corner Trigrams)—they make no mention whatsoever. Among the twelve palaces, I have discovered that where the Stem Spirits reside is the place of Spirits Concealed and Baleful Influences Vanished, namely where the Heavenly Virtue presides. If one examines a star chart yet does not understand these ten stems, how can one know its mysteries? Has one not heard the sayings of the Yin-Yang school? Whenever people establish dwellings, erect structures, and seek auspiciousness while avoiding misfortune, they say "exit from the east and work in the west"—but when speaking, they do not say "exit from Mao and work in You," nor "exit from Yin and work in Shen"—rather, they say "exit from Jia and work in Geng," or "exit from Yi and work in Xin." As for the three corner directions, it is likewise so. This is because the Branch Spirits are where baleful deities and harmful influences lodge, whereas the Stem Spirits are where the Heavenly Virtue, Monthly Virtue, Monthly Harmony, Monthly Emptiness, and Yearly Virtue gather; hence they can avoid misfortune and attract good fortune.
On the star chart, I mark the character Ren at the boundary between Hai and Zi, and the character Gui at the boundary between Zi and Chou. Each of the twelve palaces has one stem and one branch correspondingly arranged, and since the degrees in each palace differ in width and narrowness, I accordingly divide them according to these widths.
The specific divisions are as follows:
| Palace | Degrees | Stem Spirit Boundaries (Marked by the Twenty-Eight Mansions) |
|---|---|---|
| Zi Palace | 31.5 degrees | 6 degrees of Wei Mansion form half of Ren; from Nü to 8 degrees forms half of Gui |
| Chou Palace | 27⅔ degrees | The first 2 degrees of Niu Mansion's Jupiter section form half of Gui; from Dou to 10 degrees forms half of Gen |
| Yin Palace | 28.5 degrees | 6 degrees of Ji Mansion form half of Gen; from Wei to 9 degrees forms half of Jia |
| Mao Palace | 29.5 degrees | The first degree of Xin Mansion forms half of Jia; to 7 degrees of Di Mansion forms half of Yi |
| Chen Palace | 30⅔ degrees | 3 degrees of Kang Mansion form half of Yi; from Zhen to 16 degrees forms half of Xun |
| Si Palace | 30 degrees (8 degrees on each side) | 1 degree of Zhen Mansion forms half of Xun; 4 degrees of Yi Mansion form half of Bing |
| Wu Palace | 30 degrees (7.5 degrees on each side) | 1 degree of Zhang Mansion forms half of Bing; 11 degrees of Liu Mansion form half of Ding |
| Wei Palace | 27.5 degrees | 1 degree of Gui Mansion forms half of Ding; 15 degrees of Jing Mansion form half of Kun |
| Shen Palace | 28 degrees | 2 degrees of Jing Mansion form half of Kun; 13 degrees of Bi Mansion form half of Geng |
| You Palace | 27.5 degrees | The first degree of Bi Mansion forms half of Geng; 11 degrees of Wei Mansion form half of Xin |
| Xu Palace | 32 degrees (8 degrees on each side) | 7 degrees of Lou Mansion form half of Xin; 9 degrees of Kui Mansion form half of Qian |
| Hai Palace | 32.5 degrees | 2 degrees of Bi Mansion belong to half of Qian; 4 degrees of Shi Mansion belong to half of Ren |
Using these stem-branch attributions to examine destinies, whenever the Life Palace and Life Ruler both occupy positions of the Stem Spirits, such persons are in most cases wealthy and noble. However, one must also examine whether the natal chart resides in useful positions such as Yearly Virtue, Monthly Virtue, Monthly Emptiness, Monthly Harmony, Hexagram Vitality, or Six Harmonies. Such persons are naturally intelligent and perceptive, far from foolishness or weakness. Those who attain the nobility of the Three Terraces and Eight Seats, prefectural governors, wealthy households, or those who rise from nothing through their own efforts—such people often have their Life Palace situated upon the Stem Spirits. This is because the Stem Spirits uphold the bright firmness of Yang Virtue, casting away the murky vileness of Yin softness. If, among the positions of the Earthly Branches, there happen to be wealthy and noble persons, their star degrees must be fully qualified. From this we may observe that the Stem Spirits most often govern nobility—one must examine this clearly.
The Verse says:
The twelve Branch Spirits harbor Yin virtue;
The twelve Stem Spirits govern Yang virtue.
To discuss only Branch Spirits and not the Stems—
Your calculation of fate is only half complete.The Two Virtues, Monthly Emptiness, and Monthly Harmony—
Among the twelve Stem-Spirit positions they reside.
When Body and Life rulers both approach these places,
If not noble, then surely wealthy lords.None surpasses Yearly Virtue among Monthly Virtues—
How do Yin and Yang, as equals, treat each other?
Bing, Ren, Geng, Jia strengthen more than Wu—
In reading fate and stars, examine carefully.Jia joins Xin and Wei; Bing joins Zhang;
Bi achieves Geng's presence in the northern Wei;
Moreover Wu Kun nourishes the Jing wood—
When Life and Body approach here, it is most strong.The Sword's Edge Great Baleful Spirit is itself a Stem Spirit—
Within it, fortune and misfortune must finely be discerned.
Before the four mid-branch months, the Metal position is most poisonous;
It is named the "True Sword" that carves the human body.If by chance one does not die but gains a human body,
Nine out of ten will suffer punishment's scars.
Those bearing horns and fur, true beasts in form—
Mostly because their seating was upon the butcher's block.Yi, Xin, Ding, Si, Gui are the Yin stems—
Compared to Yang stems, nobility is harder found.
One may still call them auspicious within Branch positions—
Within them, distinguish fortune and fate, and look.Gui Water in Nü and Niu, generating and overcoming;
Yi approaches Di and Kang, overcoming its path.
Ding resides in Liu and Gui, overcoming half in birth;
Wei Earth generates Xin, born from Si producing Qian.Qian, Kun, Gen, Xun—the four corners stand high;
Qian in Si, Kun in Xin, and Wu's position is firm.
The Sword's Edge in these positions is mostly auspicious;
Xun's pit and Gen's earth attain their merit.The Yearly Chariot has ever been called an auspicious spirit—
With Palace, Merit, Rank, and Nobility it shares equal name.
A single Stem-Spirit position, many men neglect—
He who knows it is the star-master of first rank.The positions of the Ten Stems are originally pure Yang—
When a noble man resides therein, great fortune and prosperity.
When women and petty men reside there, it becomes excessive—
Bringing widowhood, orphanhood, and solitude's harm.Hexagram Vitality has ever only discussed the Stems—
But Branch positions' Hexagram Vitality must also be observed.
Where Body and Life come and go, examine their interactions—
If not a marquis or duke, then an official of rank.In years, the Branch Spirit's baleful influence is most fierce—
The honored deity, the Yearly Chariot, alone approaches the direction.
Only by the side, upon Stem Spirits, its malevolence does not strike—
Otherwise, one should seek the Hare's, Horse's, Noble's regions.
For example, if a person born in a Wei year has his Life in Wei, then the Yearly Chariot is upon it. If he sits to the side in the Ding or Kun directions, then no baleful harm occurs. The so-called "Jia, Geng, Bing, Ren, Yi, Xin, Ding, Gui, Qian, Kun, Gen, Xun—Spirits Concealed and Baleful Influences Vanished" embodies precisely this principle, and is thus called the Heavenly Virtue.
Another Verse:
The Year Ruler's opposite position is also a baleful spirit—
The Emperor's Throne, when rushing a stem, is called "One Star."
Let not one's life confront the One Star in its fullness—
But by the side upon a partial stem, one may escape its punishment.The Yearly Branches and Stems have their true harmonies—
Jia people unite with Ji; Yi people with Geng.
If one's Body and Life both approach these places,
Early shall one gain a wife's wealth, with lutes and zithers singing.Those born in Wu, Chen, You, and Hai years,
Who also place their Life and Body upon Branch positions—
With Yin, Si, Shen palaces intermingled and overlapping in view—
Also clarify that Chou, Xu, Wei mutually obstruct.In Six Harm years, observe the interchanges—
Placing one's Life in this palace also harms relationships.
If the Six Relatives do not overcome the Body, they overcome the Life—
It also indicates a second wife and estranged children.The Four Wastes as Stem Spirits all men detest—
Yet who knows that when Spirits are vigorous, Virtue's light shines?
The star chart position does not despise this wastefulness—
It delights in the positions of the Yang stem spirits.The two positions of Emptiness and Destruction are called baleful spirits—
When one's Life is placed within them, the body is also harmed.
One should move toward the stem's side, not its proper position—
What is truly feared therein is the Branch Spirit.The Ten Stems' Officer Stars should finely be examined—
For they pair the Five Yin with the Five Yang.
For Yin persons, seeing union becomes nobility and office—
What overcomes me, or what I overcome, brings double harm.
The heart of this chapter reveals a dimension of astrological destiny studies that has been widely neglected—the decisive role of the Stem Spirits (Heavenly Stems and four corner trigram positions) within the star chart.
Placing this ancient system within a contemporary cognitive framework, one may understand it from the following angles:
| Concept | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Spirits Concealed and Baleful Influences Vanished | Refers to locations where Heaven's stems reside—auspicious spirits gather hidden and baleful influences vanish. As where Heavenly Virtue presides, these are the most auspicious positions on a star chart |
| Heavenly Virtue | That which resides upon the Stem Spirits, representing the transformative power of Heaven's Way—an utterly auspicious deity |
| Monthly Virtue, Monthly Harmony, Monthly Emptiness | Three groups of auspicious gods in the monthly cycle system, all associated with the Stem Spirits, governing the conferral of blessings and protection |
| Yearly Virtue | The Yang Virtue auspicious deity within the annual cycle corresponding to the Grand Duke Jupiter (Tai Sui), considered the highest-ranked among stem spirits, as the verse says: "None surpasses Yearly Virtue among Monthly Virtues" |
| Yearly Chariot | The palace position which the Grand Duke Jupiter (Tai Sui) visits—a venerated deity sharing auspicious qualities with Stem Spirits, though in its proper position it may also show ominous aspects |
| Hexagram Vitality | A system matching the sixty-four hexagrams with the seventy-two seasonal markers and twenty-four solar terms; in star destiny, it judges prosperity and decline of the cosmic vitalities |
| Sword's Edge Baleful Spirit | A baleful influence among Stem-Spirit positions, particularly when the Metal position in the four mid-branch months (Zi, Wu, Mao, You) prior reaches its most poisonous aspect—it is then called the "True Sword" that may sever lives |
| Four Wastes | A state of decline and waste in the stem-branch system, yet on the Yang Stem-Spirit side, it may paradoxically transform ill fortune into good |
| Six Harmonies | Six mutual impediment relationships among the Earthly Branches, such as Chou–Wu and Yin–Si; if situated within the Life Palace, this obstructs the Six Relatives |
