Chapter 9 of 10
大六壬心境
How does one distinguish life from death when divining illness? First examine the White Tiger and which spiritual signs it aligns with. Suppose today's Day Stem belongs to Water, and the Earth spirit acts as White Tiger—the illness will be difficult to recover from. Take the Day Stem as the patient, the Branch as the illness and resting place, the Ghost as the disease, White Tiger as the disease spirit, and the initial and transmitted signs as medicine. Carefully examine the spirit mounted by White Tiger: if it generates the Day Stem, recovery follows; if of the same element, recovery is slower; if it controls the Day Stem, recovery is difficult. The Day Stem controlling the Branch means the person controls the disease—easy recovery; the Branch controlling the Day Stem with White Tiger riding means the disease controls the person—certain death. For example, in a Renxu Day divination of illness, if Xu carries White Tiger and controls the Day, medicine will be ineffective. If the annual destiny is also controlled, this is most ominous.
Next examine the six types of entering the Tomb. Careful deliberation will make things clear:
| Tomb-Entry Type | Specific Circumstances | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Body Enters Tomb | Fire Day with Yong Shen seeing Xu as initial sign | Ninth month use Fire spirit, sixth month use Wood spirit, third month use Water spirit, twelfth month use Metal spirit |
| Soul Enters Tomb | Tiankui covering Bing/Ding (Xu atop Bing/Ding) | Bing/Ding Day with Xu atop the Stem |
| Ghost Enters Tomb | Wu/Ji Day with Wood spirit resting on Wei | Wood as ghost, Yin/Mao atop Wei |
| Day Enters Tomb | Ren/Gui Day with Water spirit stopping on Chen | Hai/Zi atop Chen |
| Branch Enters Tomb | Shen/You branches encountering Chou position | Geng/Xin Day with You atop Chou |
| Annual Destiny Enters Tomb | Annual destiny's Three Harmonies—startled dreams | If person's annual destiny is Wu or Yin, Shengguang or Gongcao atop Xu |
When the Killing Spirit and White Tiger together enter the hexagram, at such a time it is no less severe. The Yong Shen entering the tomb, the annual destiny entering the tomb, and the Day Stem entering the tomb are all inauspicious signs. If White Tiger rides Yupen (bath basin), Sangche (funeral hearse), Sishen (dead spirit), Siqi (dead qi), Kuigang, Yin/Mao/Chen/Si, Sanbing (three weapons), Wumu (five tombs) and faces the Day, Branch, annual destiny—ominous. Three transmissions controlling the Day Stem—ominous. Three transmissions falling into void—ominous. If the spirit atop the Day Stem controls White Tiger, the illness recovers; if the spirit atop the Branch controls White Tiger, recovery also follows. If the Day, Branch, or annual destiny sees Tianxi (heavenly joy), Tianyi (heavenly doctor), Diyi (earthly doctor), Shengqi (vital qi), or Rijie (day liberation), or if these appear in the initial/transmitted signs, the situation has rescue within misfortune.
When White Tiger rides with vigor and prosperity, encountering control of the annual destiny, life will surely topple. The inauspicious period is determined by the Ghost Day. On Jia/Yi Day divination, worry about Xin and Geng. In illness divination, one must avoid transmissions entering the Ghost realm. For example, Jia/Yi Day with transmissions seeing Shen/You—this is called "transmission approaching the絕地 (exhausted place)," and recovery is impossible.
Stem and Branch as Tiger—worry about the current day; establish another branch to calculate the journey. Add the current hour to the Tai Sui (Grand Duke) position and see where White Tiger rests: resting on Tai Sui, death occurs within the year; one position ahead, death in the coming year; resting on the monthly establishment, death within the month; resting on the Day Stem, worry today; one position ahead of the day, death tomorrow. Also determine the specific day by where White Tiger rests, and further examine the inauspicious period, cross-referencing with the Ghost Day, the day of the natal stem's extinction/tomb, and days when the hexagram is weak.
Chou is the graveyard mound; Yin/Mao the outer coffin. On Geng/Xin Days, taking Chou as the initial sign, facing the Day, Branch, or annual destiny with control/harm—this is the Muitian Sha (graveyard field killing). On Wu/Ji Days, taking Yin/Mao as initial sign, facing the Day, Branch, or annual destiny with control/harm—this is the Guanguo Sha (coffin killing).
Yupen added to Ji seasons marks the end of the four seasons. Yupen: Spring is Chen, Summer is Wei, Autumn is Xu, Winter is Chou. When Xuanwu rides the Yupen, it is "Yupen seeing water"—greatly inauspicious. On Ren/Gui Days combined with White Tiger, this is called "Yupen seeing water"; in illness divination, death is certain.
Kuigang further produces the Qiaochu Sha (spade/hoe killing). On Bing/Ding Days, Tian Gang as White Tiger added to the Day is the Qiaochu Sha; on Ren/Gui Days, Tian Kui as White Tiger added to the Day or Branch is likewise.
The Zhen constellation's funeral hearse—do not encounter it. The Zhen constellation is Taiyi (Si). Funeral hearse: First month is Wei, second is Chen, third is Chou, fourth is Xu, reversing through the seasons. There is also the Sangche Sha: Spring starts from Congkui, summer from Shenhou, autumn from Taichong, winter from Shengguang—added to the person's annual destiny, greatly inauspicious.
Yuanchen on the natal stem added to the yearly position. Yuanchen is the Maotou Sha. For those born in Jiazi, males look one position ahead of noon (Wei) as Yuanchen, females look one position behind (Si) as Yuanchen—great taboo in illness divination.
White Tiger combined with this portends great misfortune. White Tiger added atop the Yuanchen/natal stem—greatly inauspicious.
Tiger and Yin spirits harming the illness-onset day, the dead ghost pursuing—no tolerance. If White Tiger's Yin/Yang spirits and White Tiger together control the day the illness began, or control today's Stem and Branch, death is certain. The heavenly Death Spirit facing the tomb and the annual destiny and Day/Branch—greatly inauspicious. Death Spirit: first month in Si, moving forward through the twelve branches. Xuanwu facing the Yupen-Yuanchen is "Yupen filled with water," indicating death. If White Tiger's Yin spirit controls the spirit where White Tiger rests, the patient will not die.
| White Tiger Rides | Five-Phase Control | Affected Area | Specific Symptoms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riding Metal, distantly controlling Wood | Metal controls Wood | Liver meridian | Eye diseases, wind ailments, bone and tendon pain |
| Riding Wood, distantly controlling Earth | Wood controls Earth | Spleen/stomach | Spleen-stomach illness, or sores/carbuncles (Tiger above controlling below/above generating below/balanced—illness external) |
| Riding Water, distantly restraining Fire | Water controls Fire | Heart meridian | Epidemic fevers, chills with malaria, internal vexation, throat ailments |
| Riding Fire, distantly controlling Metal | Fire controls Metal | Lung meridian | Wheezing, coughing, blood-spitting, emaciation, fright |
| Riding Earth, distantly controlling Water | Earth controls Water | Kidney meridian | Men: lower kidney ailments; Women: irregular qi/blood, menstrual disorders, diarrhea |
White Tiger's mount distinguishes accordingly; if encountering Xuanwu, water deficiency-wasting. When the Branch has qi, the person vomits; when the Stem is of the same type as Tiger, prolonged fatigue. All illness symptoms are determined by the spirit White Tiger rides. Tiger above controlling below and above generating below—illness external; Tiger below controlling above or below generating above—illness internal.
Yong Shen's five-phase sequence determines illness:
| Yong Shen Sequence | Illness |
|---|---|
| Initial Metal, final Wood | Bleeding |
| Initial Wood, final Earth | Carbuncles |
| Initial Water, final Fire | Cold with heat |
| Fire controlling Metal | Emaciation or sores |
| Earth controlling Water | Dripping, abdominal urgency |
If the spirit on the natal stem encounters Zi/Hai, it indicates kidney decline and weakness. Xuanwu with body deficiency indicates water-related illness; Tiankong indicates diarrhea. If the Day Stem generates the Branch or generates the three transmissions, the illness is self-inflicted. If the four lessons are incomplete, the pulse and qi are weak.
When a ghost in the transmissions harms the current day, examine which spirit is the source of calamity.
| Ghost's Five-Phase | Source of Affliction |
|---|---|
| Wood | Ghost of one who hanged himself, or affliction from construction/repairs |
| Metal | Ghost of one who died by the blade, or a shrine hall causing trouble |
| Fire | Stove god, Wudao (five paths), or city moat god causing trouble |
| Water | Ghost of one who drowned, or river god/water spirit |
| Earth | House spirit or earth god causing trouble; require sacrifice |
Ghost on Heavenly General—distinguish the affliction:
| Heavenly General | Type of Affliction |
|---|---|
| Guiren (Nobleman) | Heavenly spirit or ancestral temple family spirits |
| Tengshe (Flying Snake) | Road ghosts, Wudao evil spirits, those who died as strangers on the road |
| Zhuque (Vermilion Bird) | Ghosts of those who died in the wild, curse rituals, altar temples |
| Liuhe (Six Harmonies) | Ghosts of those who died by their own hand, Siming, Mangshen |
| Gouchen (Falcon) | Ghosts of soldiers/officials, earth spirits, those who died in battle by the roadside, stranger-ghosts brought by others |
| Qinglong (Azure Dragon) | Noble ghost, Siming vow-spirit |
| Tiankong (Void Sky) | No ghost; those who died innocent, wandering evil spirits in mid-air |
| Baihu (White Tiger) | Ghosts of battlefield deaths, blade-wound strangers, consumption deaths |
| Taichang (Grand Constant) | Newly dead ghost |
| Xuanwu (Dark Warrior) | Thief/wealth ghost, drowning victims, dysentery ghosts |
| Taiyin (Great Yin) | Ghost of one without heirs, blood-death ghost, affliction from disrespect to gods and Buddhas |
| Tianhou (Heavenly Queen) | Female ghost, those who died young, death in childbirth |
When a ghost in the transmissions falls in Longevity, follow the method—the principle is most precise.
| Ghost Position | Type of Affliction |
|---|---|
| Longevity (e.g., Ji month seeing Wood) | Ancestral goddess, Wudao affliction |
| Bathing | River official/water ghost (river god water spirit) |
| Coming of Age | Family shrine incense-fire spirit; should cultivate merit |
| Official Position | Litigation vow not yet fulfilled; should fulfill the vow |
| Imperial Prosperity | Ancestors or earth god (vigorous); self-died evil spirit (weak) |
| Decline | Wood-descended mountain forest |
| Illness | Ancestral grave spirit |
| Death/Tomb | Former ancestors' males causing calamity |
| Extinction | Wandering stranger-injury (roadside stranger death) |
| Womb | Death in childbirth |
| Nourishment | Temple/miao |
If the spirit on the Day Stem initiates the transmission, it is an external ghost; if the spirit on the Branch initiates the transmission, it is an internal ghost.
Two positions ahead of the Day and Month Establishment—this is the Heavenly Doctor opposed by the Earthly Doctor. For example, on a Jiazi Day divination, two ahead is Yin as Heavenly Doctor, its opposition Shen as Earthly Doctor.
When today's rescue spirit equally controls the Tiger, know that diminishment and retreat are certain. If the spirit on the Day, Branch, or annual destiny controls White Tiger, the illness will certainly heal.
| Medical Spirit's Five Phases | Treatment Method |
|---|---|
| Earth | Pills and powders |
| Water | Decoctions |
| Fire | Moxibustion |
| Metal | Acupuncture |
| Wood | Herbal medicine |
Do not seek physicians beneath Kuigang. One should not seek medical help beneath Kuigang; one should seek physicians beneath the De (virtue) spirit or Shengqi (vital qi). Heavenly Doctor, Earthly Doctor, and Vital Qi—these three directions are auspicious for avoiding illness.
Pulse Judgment: Three transmissions all Yang—pulse is floating; all Yin—pulse is deep; two Yang one Yin—pulse is tight; two Yin one Yang—pulse is relaxed; three transmissions all vigorous—pulse is flooding; middle transmission void—pulse is hollow; Fuyin hexagram—pulse is rough; Fanyin hexagram—pulse is slippery; four lessons incomplete—pulse is deficient. Heavenly乙 (Yi) running smoothly—qi necessarily smooth; Heavenly Yi running counter—qi necessarily counter. Yin-qi illness tends toward the right side; Yang-qi illness tends toward the left.
How to distinguish the cause of recovery by medicine—examine what spirit is on the annual destiny. When the Heavenly乙 rides with vigor and fullness, harming the Tiger-ghost, no difficulty arises.
| Circumstance | Result |
|---|---|
| White Tiger as ghost distantly controls the Stem; Heavenly乙 rides a vigorous spirit standing on the Day/Branch, counter-controlling White Tiger | Certain recovery |
| White Tiger does not ride vigor/prosperity, and falls into void, Three Harmonies, or Six Harmonies, generating the Day | Not inauspicious |
| Day Stem vigorous with qi | Illness mild |
| Three transmissions control ghost and tiger | Though severe, rescue exists |
Zi day serves as the retreat limit; likewise Wu/Ji recover on Geng/Xin. The day of recovery is determined by the day controlling the ghost and tiger, and the day when ghost and tiger are imprisoned/dead. For example, illness on Wu/Ji Day recovers on Geng/Xin Day.
Longing for the traveler who has not returned—one must rely on the cosmic pattern to divine it.
| Traveler's Direction | Limit Spirit | Return Period Look |
|---|---|---|
| East, South | You as limit | Spirit on Zi as return period |
| West, North | Mao as limit | Spirit on Wu as return period |
Yin-Yang Solstice Method: Those outside looking to return within, use the Summer Solstice branch's Yang spirit; those within looking for someone outside, use the Winter Solstice branch's Yang spirit. If it faces today's Day or Branch, or faces today's Stem in the initial, middle, or final transmission, all indicate coming.
Traveler's Direction and Return Period Examples:
| Traveler Located | Position | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Xu (Tiankui) | atop Hai | Beginning to pack clothes (preparing to move) |
| Xu | atop Zi | Halfway (on the journey) |
| Xu | atop Mao | Gaining the limit (about to arrive) |
| Tiankui atop Yin | seeing Gongcao on Wu | Arrives on Jia/Yi/Yin/Mao day |
| Tiankui atop Mao | seeing Daji on Wu | Arrives on Wu/Ji day |
Yong Shen Three Harmonies Method: When the Yong Shen is in Three Harmonies with the Branch, take the spirit obtained on Chen as the arrival day. For example, on Ren/Gui Day with initial Water spirit, arrives on Shen/Zi day. If the initial transmission begins with Tian Gang, it is encountering the tomb—encountering the tomb means stopping and not coming.
Annual Destiny Limit Method: If the direction is unknown, or the traveler is a thousand li away, look where the traveler's annual destiny rests—that is the direction. Annual destiny at Hai, with Dengming atop Mao, already on the road; Dengming atop Wu, arriving immediately. If the initial transmission is before the Heavenly乙 and the final transmission after, this indicates coming. Final transmission facing Mao/You indicates coming; Dashar riding the post-horse indicates coming. Final transmission empty, tomb, or extinction—not coming.
Identifying Persons and Directions (Leishen Method):
| Leishen | Person/Thing Represented |
|---|---|
| Taichang | Clothing, mother/father |
| Liuhe | Matchmaker, grandson/son |
| Qinglong | Month-friend, money, husband |
| Tianhou/Shenhou | Wife/concubine |
| Taiyi/Taiyin | Brothers |
| Gouchen | Soldiers/officials, armor/hair/skin |
| Tiankong/You/Xu | Chicken, servants |
| Baihu | Sick person, funeral bier |
| Xuanwu | Secret malice, thieves |
| Zhuque | Officials, documents |
| Gongcao | Leopard, worthy reputation, Taoist |
| Chuansong | Blades, monks and physicians |
| Taichong | Donkey, rabbit, boat/cart, wood |
| Shengguang | River deer, horse and elk |
| Xiaoji | Wild goose, eagle, sheep, wine |
| Dengming | Pig, bear, brown bear |
Six-Relative Leishen: Generating the Day Stem is father; generating the Branch is mother; comparing with the Day Stem is brother; comparing with the Branch is sister; generated by the Day Stem is son/grandson; generated by the Branch is daughter/granddaughter; controlled by the Day Stem is wife/wealth (vigorous and harmonious—wife; vigorous without harmony—concubine; imprisoned/dead compare as wealth); controlling the Day Stem is official/ghost (vigorous, virtuous, harmonious—husband or official star; imprisoned/dead—ghost). Horse—look at Shengguang; ox—look at Daji; fish—look at Tiangang; clothing/fabric—look at Taichang.
Yong Shen Three Harmonies for Return: If the Leishen does not face the limit, examine whether the Yong Shen's Three Harmonies are present atop Zi or Wu. For example, in divining documents, look at Zhuque. If Zhuque is atop Xu and the hexagram obtains Yanshang (blazing upward), with Tiankui atop Wu, then the Three Harmonies spirit faces the limit.
Four Positions Ahead of the Branch: If the Leishen does not face the limit, and the Yong Shen's Three Harmonies also do not face the limit, examine the four positions ahead of today's Branch. For example, on the first month Dinghai Day at Yin hour, divining documents: four ahead of Hai is Yin, and on Yin sits Hai as Zhuque—the document arrives on Yin Day. One must have the Leishen atop to proceed.
Other Return Period Judgments:
| Hexagram Image | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Youshen facing the Young | Not coming |
| Youshen facing the Middle | Halfway |
| Youshen facing the Old | Arriving immediately |
| Two horses entering transmissions or facing Day Stem | Journeying midway |
| Post-horse facing Branch | Arriving |
| Yang day Fuyin with forward transmission | Coming |
| Yin day Fuyin with reverse transmission | Coming |
| Fuyin with reverse (Yang)/forward (Yin) transmission | Not coming |
Youshen: Spring Chou, Summer Zi, Autumn Hai, Winter Xu. Xishen: Spring Si, Summer Zi, Autumn You, Winter Chen.
Year before at Yin/Shen means no intention to return; Si/Hai at home—the heart still lingers. In the Old season, one must become a ghost of another town; riding the Middle, the journey ahead brings illness and weakness.
Take the annual destiny's position as the direction of travel, the spirit atop the annual destiny as the direction from which one returns home, and the multiplication of upper/lower at the annual destiny position for distance, adjusted by vigor/weakness.
| Annual Destiny facing the Young | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Si/Hai | Has intention to return |
| Yin/Shen | No return date |
| Facing the Middle | Illness |
| Facing the Old | Death |
| Annual Destiny vigorous with the direction spirit harmonized/generating, carrying auspicious spirits | Safe abroad, establishing livelihood | | Annual Destiny imprisoned/dead, punished/controlled by direction spirit, carrying inauspicious spirits | Dead or ill abroad |
If the spirit on the annual destiny initiates transmission from the second lesson of the Branch, or enters the three transmissions, this is a sign of coming. If it does not enter the transmissions and does not harmonize with the Branch, one will never return. In the final transmission, upper controlling lower—only then movement; lower controlling upper—about to move; upper and lower generating each other—no movement. If the final transmission is the Day Stem's extinction spirit, even with intention to come, one cannot be certain. Fuyin with three transmissions forward: soft days do not come; hard days with Fuyin come swiftly.
Three thousand li away—look at the General; one thousand li—look at the year branch; five hundred—seek the monthly establishment; one hundred—the Stem appears; fifty—the hour.
| Distance | Spirit Examined |
|---|---|
| Beyond 3000 li | Dasharjun Sha (Great General killing) |
| Beyond 1000 li | Tai Sui (Grand Duke) |
| Beyond 500 li | Monthly establishment |
| 100 li | Heavenly Stem |
| 50 li | Current hour |
Adding the examined spirit atop Mao/You indicates on the road; atop Zi/Wu indicates arrival.
Dasharjun Sha: Yin/Mao/Chen years at Zi; Si/Wu/Wei years at Mao; Shen/You/Xu years at Wu; Hai/Zi/Chou years at You.
Youshen positions: facing the Young—not yet coming; facing the Middle—departed; facing the Old—returns soon. If the Leishen does not act as Youshen, it is also difficult to predict.
Xishen positions: Added atop a spirit of the same type as the Day Stem—external relative/cousin; added atop a spirit of the same type as the Branch—internal relative/kin. For example, on a Jiazi Day in spring divination, Si as Xishen atop Mao riding Zhuque: Mao shares the same type as Jia Stem—it is an external clan cousin, arriving on Mao Day. Zhuque represents documents—a letter is coming.
The Young uses Shengguang, the Middle uses Wei; the Old adds Chuansong to the Tai Sui. Seek the General beneath the Gang; construction and earthworks are most unfavorable.
The General moves one palace every three years. Beyond three thousand li, look where the General's Sha rests—that is the arrival period. One thousand li looks at the year branch; fifty li looks at where the hour rests—that is the arrival day. Also examine Tiangang's position: facing the Young—not yet; facing the Middle—departed; facing the Old—arrival. If Tiangang is not seen, examine whether Youshen initiates the transmission—then coming. If Youshen is absent, one may use the limit method.
Someone has gone out briefly—when will they return? Add the departure hour to today's Branch. Beneath the Kang star the Branch should arrive; or seeing the Nobleman indicates immediate return. Tiangang atop the Old season—waiting at the gate; Fuyin hexagram—meeting will be delayed.
Add the departure hour atop today's Branch, and examine where Tiangang rests as the arrival day. If the Nobleman is added atop today's Branch, arrival is immediate.
A messenger comes to ask if news has arrived—from the opposite palace count Zi forward. Counting to Tiangang confirms protection, distinguishing Young/Middle/Old. If atop the four Young positions—not yet intending to return; atop the Middle—on the road; atop the Old—at the gate.
For example, if at Si hour a person asks whether news has arrived, count from the opposite position of Si (Hai) starting at Zi, counting forward to Tiangang. If Tiangang is atop Mao, Mao is the Middle—news is already on the road.
When planning to depart, determine whether to go—examine the annual destiny and the Day/Branch. Taichong, Chuansong, Kuigang standing, or ahead of the hour—then one will cross the journey.
| Circumstance | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Current hour sees Mao/You/Shen atop Day, Branch, annual destiny; or current hour branch ahead | Definite departure |
| Behind the hour position | Not yet departed |
| Gate-tomb facing the Day Stem | Cannot move |
| Annual destiny spirit breaking through the gate-tomb spirit | Can move |
| Heavenly general entering its temple (e.g., Tianyi riding Chou) | Cannot move |
| Day Stem seeing void | Cannot move |
| Fuyin hexagram | No movement |
| Kuigang facing the Day/Branch | Compelled to move urgently |
| Three Harmonies/Six Harmonies facing Day/Branch | Though moving, delayed |
| Day generating transmissions into tomb | Movement must be swift |
| Tiangang atop Old season, spirit external | Must travel |
When departing, Stem auspicious—travel by land; Branch auspicious—why not by water. Taichong must not encounter Snake or Tiger—boat capsizes, cart overturns, people will be harmed.
Taichong governs vehicles and boats: atop earth—cart; atop water—boat. Encountering Tengshe or Baihu indicates calamity. Zhifu, Wangwang, Tianche, Feilian, Tiandi-zhuan, Jiesha, Youdu, Ludu, Tengshe, Baihu, Gouchen, Zhuque, void, Day-ghost facing the Day Stem or entering the three transmissions—all unfavorable for movement.
After long rain, when will it clear? Si/Wu with Tengshe and Zhuque together. Three transmissions all Earth—clouds should disperse; Tiankong clears to reveal the mountain peaks. If Qinglong rides vigor with Metal, still overcast; where the Fire spirit rests is the clear day.
| Hexagram Image | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Initial transmission on the Day/Branch sees Si/Wu, Tengshe, Zhuque | Clear |
| Tiankong | Dawn clearing |
| Three transmissions all Earth | Clouds disperse |
| Qinglong riding vigor | Metal—still overcast (not yet clear) |
| Fire spirit's position | Clear day (from today to where Fire spirit rests is the clear day) |
Clear spirit: Zi day at Wu; Chou day at Wei—that is, the opposing position of the Branch.
Yang is clear, Yin is rain; when accumulated Yin seeks clearing, observe the Yang master. When Bing/Ding are vigorous and generate and initiate, with Ren/Gui weak, clear weather may be granted. When the Fire spirit does not cross the southeast road, and Snake/Que again rest atop the head, soon a bright sun will be seen in the clear sky; even if residual Yin remains, it has nowhere to linger.
When divining wind, summon the Dragon and Tiger; the initial transmission also examines the Day and Branch. With vigor and punishment, arrival is swift; with decline and void, merely dust-moistening. Zi/Mao mutually adding rescues withered ears; Xuan and He establishing transmission revives gasping fish. If Baihu comes riding Hai/Zi, rain still lingers, unwilling to clear.
Clouds follow the Dragon; wind follows the Tiger. Zi is clouds; Mao is thunder. Xuanwu and Liuhe bring rain. If the Dragon/Tiger spirits have vigor, wind and rain arise; thunder and lightning together bring great wind and rain.
When water rises harming wood, threatening the people, examine advance and retreat by hour and by the Day/Branch. Branch harmed, Stem auspicious—the rise is still swift; Branch auspicious, Stem harmed—fall is gradual. Day and Branch both damaged—momentary retreat; neither harming the other—water is stable and calm.
| Hexagram Image | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Branch harmed, Stem auspicious | Rise still swift |
| Branch auspicious, Stem harmed | Fall is gradual |
| Day and Branch both damaged | Momentary retreat |
| Neither harming the other | Water stable and calm |
Going out to seek someone—examine where their residence faces which spirit. Where the spirit above faces the position, if the initial transmission harmonizes, with Three or Six Harmonies calling each other, seeing brings joy.
| Circumstance | Judgment |
|---|---|
| The spirit atop the person's residence direction with the Yong Shen in Three Harmonies or Six Harmonies | Meet with joy |
| Initial transmission is Mao (intending to go to Xu direction) | Mao-Xu Six Harmonies—meeting brings joy |
| Initial transmission Yin/Wu (intending Xu direction) | Yin/Wu/Xu Three Harmonies—also joyful |
| Tiankong, Xunkong, or falling void | Though harmonized, cannot meet |
| Xu as Heaven's head, Si as Earth's foot, facing the Day | Indicates meeting |
| Head atop foot | Obtain meeting |
| Foot atop head | No meeting |
| Dou Gang atop the Young | Person is home—can meet |
| Dou Gang atop the Middle | At the gate |
| Dou Gang atop the Old | Outside—cannot meet |
| Shengguang / Shenhou | Person is outside; wait for them—meeting obtained |
| Congkui | Meeting on the road |
| Xiaoji riding Qinglong atop the Day/Branch | At home drinking wine |
| Maoxing Fuyin (soft day) | Hidden in affection—cannot meet |
Having an appointment for someone to come—has the time already passed without arrival? When Dou ties to the Branch/Day and faces the Middle, meet directly without urging. When Dou is ahead of the day and atop the Old season, the person has gone ahead—chasing will not bring them back. If also encountering Maoxing Fuyin hexagram, they are at home and have not left—do not guess otherwise.
| Hexagram Image | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Dou Gang ties to Branch/Day, faces the Middle | Immediate meeting |
| Dou ahead of day, atop the Old | Person has left—cannot catch |
| Maoxing Fuyin | At home, not departed |
| Jianggong Hai atop the Middle | Not yet arrived |
| Mingtang atop the Middle | Will certainly meet |
| Yutang Chou atop the Middle | Already departed |
Long days away from home accumulate anxious thoughts—the Day and Branch reveal the doubts. Zhuque brings verbal disputes and worry of fire; Xuanwu brings secret malice, thieves, and treachery. Gouchen brings punishment and conflict; Baihu weakness and illness; Tengshe frightening disturbances; Taiyin peace. Liuhe and Qinglong bring joyful feasts; Taichang and Tianyi—guests come to call.
Take the Day Stem as oneself, the Branch as the residence. If the Branch rides inauspicious spirits and evil generals, it indicates calamity at home; riding auspicious spirits and good generals, there must be celebration within the household.
As a guest, not knowing the host's intentions, good or ill remains unclear and one dares not commit. The Branch is the host, the Day is the guest; if the Branch generates the Day, auspicious—one may invest.
| Hexagram Image | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Branch generates Day, abiding in vigor; the elder | The host is an elder; guest may stay |
| Day riding inauspicious spirits distantly controlling the Branch | Guest's intentions are unkind—cannot be retained |
| Branch riding inauspicious spirits distantly controlling the Day | Host is bad—cannot stay the night |
| Annual destiny riding inauspicious spirits | Cannot stay |
| Annual destiny riding auspicious spirits | Must meet an elder; may remain |
| Branch riding Dengming, Tiankong | Thief's house; surely comes deceitful enticement |
| Branch riding Kuigang, Snake/Tiger | The most evil house |
| Branch sees Shengguang or Congkui | Also not a good master |
| Shenhou added | Cannot lodge for the night |
A guest arrives to store goods—one does not know what they intend. Examine the Yin spirit above the Branch for good or ill; distantly controlling the Stem spirit—certain ruin. Also examine where the Branch spirit rests; if this position's spirit harms the Day—unfavorable. Asking why the matter arose—use the Heavenly Official to decide.
| Hexagram Image | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Day controls the spirit atop the Branch | May accept |
| The Branch's Yin spirit (fourth lesson) controls the Day's spirit above (first lesson) | Cannot accept—the goods must be stolen property and will bring ruin |
| The spirit atop the Branch controls the spirit atop the Day | Also cannot retain |
When visiting a high official, what is appropriate? Qinglong and Xiaoji can be relied upon. When Dou Gang faces the Young, what is sought is obtained; atop the Old—empty return; atop the Middle—wait.
| Hexagram Image | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Day and Branch generate each other | Mutual delight |
| Day and Branch control each other | Meeting brings no joy |
| Day/Branch sees Qinglong, Taichang, Liuhe | What is sought is certainly obtained |
| Spirits and generals inauspicious | What is sought is unobtainable |
| Dou Gang atop the Young | What is sought is obtained |
| Atop the Old | Empty return |
| Atop the Middle | Wait |
When someone comes with words, the truth is not yet known—add the hour and carefully examine the Day and Branch. If the spirit atop the Branch harms the spirit atop the Day, the coming person's words are not groundless. The Day is the envoy, the Branch is oneself; if the Stem harms the Branch, it is the basis of falsehood. Yin, Kong, She, Hu, Kuigang standing, six generals facing the Stem—certainly deceiving.
| Hexagram Image | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Spirit atop Branch controls spirit atop Day | The matter is trustworthy |
| Spirit atop Day controls spirit atop Branch | Not trustworthy |
| Taiyin, Tiankong, Tengshe, Baihu, Tiankui, Tiangang facing the Day Stem | False and deceptive—untrustworthy |
| Void, Shehai entering transmissions | All empty |
| Tiangang atop the Young | Trustworthy |
| Atop the Middle | Half true, half false |
| Atop the Old | Entirely false |
| Fanyin | Human feelings turn against each other |
| Shen/Chen as Zhuque | Words cunning and deceptive—untrustworthy |
For inauspicious matters, examine Baihu—if generating/balancing with the current day, it is real; for auspicious matters, examine Qinglong—if generating/balancing with the current day, it is real.
I have honored guests and wish to buy wine, but wonder whether they have any—doubt assails me. Congkui atop the Young—just now brewing; atop the Middle—rich and fragrant; atop the Old—dried up empty. List the generals: Dajia added to the place; Branch at Wei atop Zi—obtain half a pot.
| Hexagram Image | Judgment |
|---|---|
| Congkui atop the Young | Just begun brewing |
| Atop the Middle | Matured (rich fragrance) |
| Atop the Old | No wine (dried up) |
| Xiaoji atop a vigorous place | Has wine |
| Xiaoji atop a weak/void place | No wine |
| Day Stem sees Gongcao, Kuigang | Wine just matured |
| Sees Shenhou, Xiaoji | Has wine but not much—only half a pot |
| Qinglong, Liuhe atop the Day | Certainly has wine |

For fishing and hunting, Taichong is the sitting spirit; the Day adding to Wu brings wolf and tiger ire. Chou approaching the generating direction signifies loss; Fu-Mao—empty return, unprofitable. Branch is fish and birds; Stem is the net—Stem harming Branch with auspiciousness obtains fowl and scales. When the divining hour receives control—obtaining much; do not add Ying-shih to the Day and Branch.
| Hexagram Image | Judgment |

| The reverse | No catch |
| Fuyin hexagram | Nothing obtained |
| Annual destiny/Day/Branch spirit able to control the creature category | Must obtain |
| Tiangang atop the Old | Must obtain |
| Atop the Young | Nothing obtained |
| Day Stem atop Wu | Unfavorable (void in the center) |
| Mao as injury gate | Has catch |
| Chou as birth gate | No gain |
| Soft day Fuyin, Maoxing | Beast hides and does not emerge |
| Hai as Ying-shih (opening gate) | Fowl and beast have advantage—hard to catch |
| Stem controls Branch | Obtainable |
| Branch controls Stem | Not obtainable |

When strange things alarm people, causing worry—examine the three transmissions, spirits, and generals to discern the cause. Also examine what category of spirit the anomaly belongs to; seek among the thirty-six animals in order.
| Hexagram Image | Type of Anomaly |
|---|---|
| Si as Tiankong | Water creature |
| You riding Liuhe | Boiling cauldron, dove |
| Xu with Liuhe | Spirits alarming dogs |
| Gang attached to Tengshe | Well boiling over |
| Taiyi, Hai with Snake | Entering the latrine |
| Chuansong with bright light, Daji | Ox |
In all anomalies, first examine Tengshe, then Yueyan, Dashar, Zhifu. If Tengshe's Yin spirit acts as vital qi, vigorous—it must be a living creature; if it acts as dead qi, weak—it must be a dead object.
Yueyan: First month starts at Xu, reversing twelve. Dashar: Zheng Xu, Er Si, San Wu, Si Wei, Wu Yin, Liu Mao, Qi Chen, Ba Hai, Jiu Zi, Shi Chou, Shi Yi Shen, Shi Er You. Zhifu: Jia day at Si, Yi day at Chen, Bing day at Mao, Ding day at Yin, Wu day at Chou, Ji day at Wu, Geng day at Wei, Xin day at Shen, Ren day at You, Gui day at Xu. Tianmu Sha: Spring Chen, Summer Wei, Autumn Xu, Winter Chou—indicates anomalies.
The thirty-six animals divide the twelve palaces by dawn, day, and dusk: Yin to Si is dawn, Wu to You is day, Xu to Chou is dusk.
| Earthly Branch | Dawn | Day | Dusk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zi | Swallow | Rat | Bat |
| Chou | Ox | Crab | Turtle |
| Yin | Leopard | Tiger | Wildcat |
| Mao | Raccoon dog | Rabbit | Fox |
| Chen | Dragon | Flood dragon | Fish |
| Si | Snake | Eel | Earthworm |
| Wu | Horse | Deer | River deer |
| Wei | Sheep | Eagle | Wild goose |
| Shen | Ape | Monkey | Lemur |
| You | Turtle dove | Rooster | Pheasant |
| Xu | Wolf | Dog | Jackal |
| Hai | Pig | Armadillo | Swine |
If Tengshe appears in the current hour's three transmissions, an anomaly exists; if not, none does. If the earthly-branch spirit on which Shenhou rests harmonizes auspiciously with the Day and Branch, no harm results; if it controls them, disaster follows. Determining what creature the anomaly is, use the five-phase judgment of the earthly-branch spirit on which Shenhou rests: Wood—forest flowers, grasses, wooden implements; Metal—metal/stone implements; Water—river god, water spirits, pigs/rats; Fire—temple shrines, spirits and ghosts; Earth—household spirits, ancestral portraits.
In gambling, when auspicious generals stand in the three transmissions and both parties cast their lots, push forward by annual destiny. Though auspicious spirits atop the annual destiny indicate victory, being controlled by inauspicious spirits brings decline.
| Circumstance | Judgment |
|---|---|
| One person alone | Three transmissions with auspicious spirits—certain victory |
| Two people divining | Each examines the spirit on the annual destiny: I control him—he loses; he controls me—I lose |
| Auspicious spirits on the annual destiny | Though victory is possible, if distantly controlled by inauspicious spirits, defeat follows |
| Three or more people | All examine the spirits on their annual destinies |
| Two people with the same year | Separate guest/host: first to act is guest, later is host; Day Stem is guest, Branch is host |
| Branch controls Stem | Host wins |
| Stem controls Branch | Guest wins |
| Riding auspicious generals | Especially favorable |
| Transmission person on the solitary | Wins |
| On the void | Defeats |
Solitary and void: in the six Jia cycles, the void is the solitary; the solitary's opposition is the void. If the Day sees Tianyi, Qinglong, or Taichang and also controls the spirit on the Branch—guest wins; if the Branch sees these—host wins.
The various sections recorded in Scroll 07 of the Da Liuren Xinjing center on the principle of using Stem/Branch, spirits/generals, and the three transmissions as an information-carrying system to construct a complete symbolic framework modeling the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of human affairs. The illness section establishes the Day Stem as the patient, the Branch as the affliction's locus, White Tiger as the disease spirit, and the initial/transmitted signs as medicine, setting up a correspondence among "person—illness—medical treatment" with five-phase generation/control determining the trajectory of disease. The traveler section takes the Day Stem as the traveler, the Branch as the household, synthesizing multiple indicators—catEGORY spirits facing limits, Three/Six Harmonies, Youshen/Xishen—to determine the return date comprehensively. The entire system emphasizes the unity of image and number: each spirit/general's celestial-pan position atop the earthly-pan simultaneously carries temporal information (when), spatial information (where), and affairs information (what).
From a cognitive science perspective, Liuren's divinatory logic is essentially the construction of a complex "decision support system." It transforms human anxiety under uncertainty (whether illness will heal, when the traveler will return) into an operable symbolic derivation process. In an era without big data and statistical models, this provided a structured approach to thinking.
The five-phase differential thinking in the illness section is especially worthy of attention: White Tiger riding Metal controlling Wood indicates liver disease; riding Fire controlling Metal indicates lung disease. This is highly homologous with TCM's five-phase visceral manifestations theory—Wood governs the liver, Fire the heart, Earth the spleen, Metal the lungs, Water the kidneys. Liuren illness divination and TCM diagnosis thus share the same cosmological framework; it is not an isolated mystical art. Moderns can understand it as a system-theory-based health risk assessment model: comprehensively evaluating the trajectory of illness through multiple symbolic dimensions (the spirit White Tiger rides, tomb-entry type, the three transmissions), much like multi-indicator composite scoring in modern medicine.
The traveler section's Leishen system reveals an ancient wisdom of information management. In an era of poor communication, a methodology was needed to cope with the uncertainty of "unknown return date, unknown direction." The Leishen method—mapping Zhuque to documents, Tiankong to servants, Chuansong to monks and physicians—is actually a mapping of social roles onto a symbolic system, enabling the diviner to select symbolic threads according to the specific person/object of inquiry.
The portents section, addressing mental disturbance as "ghost affliction," can be understood through Jungian analytical psychology as internal psychic conflicts yearning for integration. By clothing the ghost—projection born of undefined emotion—in elements and colors, prescribing Wood as "hanged ghost" due to a penchant for constructions or graves of those who sought self-strangulation shaped on heights, it frames "external" figures as physical; projection into empty halls does not involve venturing outward to spirit springs. Examining family ancestral grudges before other foci places modern Chinese moral philosophy of filial piety at the analytical gateway. When embodied in living persons, material elements (wood color; e.g., varnished furniture) further modulate figuration via location transfer along the branching map; ultimately it stabilizes conflict by assigning the symbolic configuration to fixed material direction, recreating causation through identification.
Modern transformation of illness divination: Although it should not replace modern medical diagnosis, its systematic thinking bears borrowing. For example, "Day controls Branch—person controls illness—easy recovery; Branch controls Day with White Tiger—illness controls person—death," can be understood as: when the body's self-regulatory capacity (Day Stem) is strong relative to pathological factors (Branch/Baihu), prognosis is good; the reverse is dangerous. Here one finds parallels to modern medicine's relationship between the patient's baseline constitution and the severity of disease.
Decision references when awaiting a traveler's return: While modern smartphone location-sharing has solved the "where is the person" problem, the multi-signal cross-verification thinking of Liuren traveler divination retains value. For example, in business cooperation, predicting when the other party might reply and when a project may achieve progress—one can adapt the multidimensional judgments of "category spirit facing the limit," "three harmonies arriving," "Youshen positioned" into an "assumption—action—review" decision framework: set an expected time point, adjust expectations in alignment with interim signals, then validate or correct the original judgment.
Practical significance of weather divination: For agriculture, outdoor activities, and aviation, predictive meteorology remains practically relevant. Liuren weather rules—"where the Fire spirit rests is the clear day" or "White Tiger riding Hai/Zi—rain lingers"—can complement meteorological satellites as an empirical observation record, embodying ancient condensation of long-term weather patterns.
The most profound philosophical foundation of the Liuren system is "unity of Heaven and humanity" and "homology of image and number." It presupposes that all cosmic phenomena—illness, travel, weather—can be modeled and forecast through one set of symbols (Stems/Branches, spirits/generals, three transmissions). Founded upon the organic unity of all phenomena as its central premise—the part (the hexagram at divination time) unconsciously reflecting the whole (the likely trajectory of events). Similarly explicated in modern physics is the holographic principle—the whole is ensconced within each segment by unfolded symbolism.
Also illuminating is the idea of "six entries into tomb." Ambiguities of burial include "collecting, concluding, natural failure" quintessentially tomb-imaged; entry into tomb represents a thing progressing to terminal consummation. In illness divination, illnesses enter tombs for the physical body, the spirit in the palace Wei Xu toward Gate of Ghosts... tomb upon end; tomb-day-count ruin—employ, day-with-soul-through-to-annual-destination... all assess through six dimensions the possibility of the terminus. This multidimensional analysis mirrors modern multiple-criteria risk-assessment frameworks.
Locating the philosophical insight "essence brings fate" in the system as applied to medicinal arts of old; esoteric spirituality behind herb/craft nonetheless does not dissolve the medically methodic logic, coherent also for times immutable separation by human art across two galaxies between astrological phenomenology and medicinal empiricism — A precious witness even now of pre-modern human wit attempting to model our cosmos operatively:
| Concept | Explanation |
