According to the annotation in the Liuren Bingji Sanshi Zhan (Thirty Prognostications on Military Affairs): In all cases of selecting an auspicious day for deploying troops, one exclusively uses Tiangang placed over Yuejian as the foundation. Where Chuansong and Congkui lie beneath is "Sui-qian"; beneath Tiankui is "Tianfu"; beneath Dengming and Shenhou is "Sui-dui"; beneath Daji is "Tiancang"; beneath Gongcao is "Sui-hou". All of the above days and time-branches are auspicious; if they further encounter mutual generation above and below, it is even more favorable. However, beneath Taichong is "Xiabi" (Hempen Closure), beneath Tiangang is "Fuchong" (Opposing Charge), beneath Taiyi is "Zhechong" (Breaking Charge), beneath Shengguang is "Mianchong" (Turtle Charge), and beneath Xiaoji is "Zhisì" (Fatal Death). These days and time-branches are inauspicious and troops must not be deployed on them. Additionally, one must meticulously examine whether the upper and lower elements generate each other (auspicious) or overcome each other (inauspicious).
The Longshou Jing supplements: In the three spring months, the seven eastern lunar mansions are the Sui-wei (Year Position), the seven southern mansions are Sui-qian, the seven western mansions are Sui-dui, and the seven northern mansions are Sui-hou. In early summer, the Xing and Zhang mansions constitute Fuchong; in late summer, the Jing and Gui mansions constitute Yanchong (Concealing Charge). The first month, early summer, spring/autumn, and winter all follow this pattern. Sui-wei, Fuchong, Yanchong, Zhechong, Sui-qian, and Xiabi are all inauspicious; Sui-hou, Sui-dui, Tiancang, and Tianfu are all auspicious, and even if the day and time-branch encounter inauspiciousness, it is not a major harm. The judgment for night encampment focuses on the relationships among the spirits above the day stem and branch, the Tomb, Punishment, and fierceness: determining the camp's safety coefficient. The Tomb speaks of concealment and ambush; Punishment speaks of conflict and injury; Kuigang speaks of killing and intimidation; Serpent and Tiger speak of terror and accidents — together these symbols sketch a "nocturnal risk map."
From a modern perspective, this is essentially an ancient model of environmental safety assessment. The ancients quantified camp-safety factors into an operable system: whether the camp can be easily surprised (Tomb), whether internal contradictions may escalate (Punishment), whether the area is under high-pressure threat (Kuigang), and whether sudden scares may occur (Serpent & Tiger).

The Sanshi Zhan comments: For example, on a Gengchen day, with the Si general at Shen hour: on a Geng day, use Chou as the Noble; it falls on Chen. Xuanwu rides Xu, and goes to meet Chou on high. At this time, one should not travel eastward, for wood overcomes earth. Some say: "Xuanwu is the spirit of thieves; ironically, in causing our own army to march we ourselves are Xuanwu — we must not be overcome." Yes.
The core of selecting an auspicious route is "never walk into the direction that overcomes you." Treat oneself (or the marching army, symbolized by Xuanwu) as a body of energy, and choose directions that generate or support its field, while avoiding directions that clash and overcome it. The logic of "Xuanwu's fear direction" parallels the weakness-avoidance strategy in game theory: clearly recognize one's own vulnerabilities and, in route planning, actively steer around the areas that would expose them.
