Chapter 5 of 14
六壬粹言
The Sun and Monthly General is the Sovereign ☀️
The Monthly General is the Sun, serving as the sovereign deity of the entire divination. If it begins the sequence riding an auspicious general, the result is auspicious. For example, in a Renchen Day Si-hour with Si General divination, the three transmissions are Si, Yin, Hai—the Monthly General rides the Nobleman and begins as the Wealth Element. Conversely, if it begins riding an inauspicious general, the result is inauspicious. For instance, in a Bingyin Day Si-hour with Zi General divination, the three transmissions are Zi, Wei, Yin—the Monthly General rides the Flying Serpent as the Day's Ghost pressing upon the Heavenly Stem at the start.
Sun Approaching the Body Pattern: The body refers to the Heavenly Stem. For example, in a Wuchen Day Si-hour Wu General divination, Wu is the Sun pressing upon the Heavenly Stem—this is called Sun Approaching the Body. Moreover, it rides the Azure Dragon, serving as the generating deity. Those in office may expect promotion; ordinary people also receive the joy of material gain. Even if it falls within the Void Death, it may still be used, for the Sun itself is a deity suspended in emptiness. Another example: in a Renwu Day Hai-hour Xu General divination, Xu is the Sun pressing upon the Stem, riding the White Tiger as Ghost, indicating severe illness attacking. As the hour approaches dusk and the Sun has lost its radiance, all prognostication here is inauspicious.
Sun Shining Upon the Dwelling Pattern: The dwelling refers to the Earthly Branch. For example, in a Yimao Day Mao-hour Zi General divination, Zi is the Sun pressing upon the Branch—this is called Sun Shining Upon the Dwelling. It rides the Nobleman and generates the Branch. If divining about a residence, hidden treasures must surely be present. If the divination occurs in a Zi year, with the Grand Duke Nobleman entering the dwelling, an honored child will be born that year. Another example: in a Wuchen Day Chen-hour Yin General divination, Yin is the Sun pressing upon the Branch, riding the Flying Serpent countering the dwelling—indeed, the household must be troubled by many strange occurrences.
The Hour as Vanguard Already Reveals the Thread 🕐
The Vanguard is the exact hour of consultation. Before obtaining the lesson and its transmissions, the ancients first examined the exact hour—the general outline of the matter was already known. For example, on Ren/Gui Days obtaining the Wu hour, Wu is the Pregnancy Spirit—one immediately knows the consultation concerns pregnancy. On Bing/Ding Days obtaining the Shen hour, Shen is the Day's Wealth—one knows the consultation concerns seeking wealth. If meeting the Post Horse, it signals matters of relocation; meeting Void Death, matters of encroachment and deceit. Generation and unity with the Day Stem bring good fortune; clashing and overcoming the Day Stem bring misfortune. If punishing or overcoming one's Year and Fate, this is especially taboo.
Hour-Making Generating the Day: This refers to the divination hour beginning the sequence, generating the Day Stem. For example, in a Yiwei Day Hai-hour Mao General divination, the three transmissions Hai, Mao, Wei constitute this. The hour represents the present moment; the beginning of the sequence represents the origin of matters. Now the hour and first transmission simultaneously generate the Day Stem—movement obtains vitality, and all plans are fulfilled without obstruction. When generating the Branch, the principle is the same.
Hour-Making Overcoming the Day Pattern: This refers to the divination hour beginning the sequence, overcoming the Day Stem. For example, in a Gengchen Day Wu-hour Chen General divination, the three transmissions Wu, Chen, Yin constitute this. When the hour and first transmission both overcome the Day Stem, then resistance appears at the closest point—all endeavors face difficulty, and all consultations are inauspicious. If the final transmission or the deities on the Year and Fate possess the Offspring Element as a rescue, it may be resolved. This lesson is suitable only for pursuing fugitives and catching thieves.
The Year Master Divides Fortune and Misfortune for the Year 📅
The Year refers to the Grand Duke (Tai Sui). In a Jia year seeing Jia, in a Yi year seeing Yi—this is called the Year Lord. In a Zi year seeing Zi, in a Chou year seeing Chou—this is called the Grand Duke. The Grand Duke is like the Son of Heaven; the Monthly Establishment is like a feudal lord, governing affairs within the month. Its authority is the greatest. If the Grand Duke begins the sequence, it indicates matters of far-reaching significance, pertaining to the imperial court. Riding auspicious generals with generation and unity brings good fortune; riding inauspicious generals with punishment and overcoming brings misfortune.
Heavenly Grace Lesson: The Grand Duke begins the sequence, riding an auspicious general that generates and unites with the Day Stem and the deities of Year and Fate—this is called Heavenly Grace. For example, in a Renyin Day with three transmissions Shen, Hai, Yin, consulting in a Shen year with night generals—the Grand Duke rides the Azure Dragon generating the Day. It indicates a grand future, with both fame and profit complete. When riding the Azure Dragon, officials will be transferred or promoted; riding the Vermilion Bird or Sky Void, court correspondence arrives; riding the Heavenly Empress, imperial favor descends.
Heavenly Calamity Lesson: The Grand Duke begins the sequence riding an inauspicious general, punishing and overcoming the Day Stem and the deities of Year and Fate—this is called Heavenly Calamity. For example, in a Jiwei Day with three transmissions Mao, Wei, Hai, consulting in a Mao year with night generals—the Grand Duke rides the White Tiger pressing upon Stem and Branch as Ghost. It indicates affairs of the greatest magnitude, crimes reaching the imperial court—all consultations are inauspicious.
The Monthly Governor Distinguishes Safety and Peril for the Month 🌙
When the Monthly Establishment begins the sequence, riding auspicious deities that generate and unite brings good fortune; riding inauspicious generals that punish and overcome brings misfortune.
Timely Prosperity Lesson: The Monthly Establishment begins the sequence, riding auspicious deities that generate and unite with the Day Stem and the deities of Year and Fate—this is called Timely Prosperity. All consultations are judged as the free flow of fortune. For example, in the first month on a Gengzi Day Xu-hour Hai General divination, the three transmissions are Yin, Mao, Chen, with Yin as the Monthly Establishment, riding the Azure Dragon as the Stem's Wealth Deity—all consultations are auspicious.
Timely Adversity Lesson: The Monthly Establishment begins the sequence, riding inauspicious deities that punish and overcome the Day Stem and the deities of Year and Fate—this is called Timely Adversity. All consultations are judged as the blockage of fortune. For example, in the seventh month on a Jiawu Day Shen-hour Si General divination, the three transmissions are Shen, Si, Yin, with Shen as the Monthly Establishment, riding the White Tiger overcoming the Day Stem and Branch. With no rescue deity in the final transmission, misfortune and calamity are unavoidable.
Ding as the Moving Spirit—A Two-Forked Judgment 🔥
Ding is the Moving Spirit. For the four stems Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui, when the Dun-Ding of the current Xun appears in the lessons, transmissions, Year, or Fate: on Water Days it indicates Wealth in motion; on Metal Days it indicates misfortune in motion.
Water Day Encountering Ding Examples: On Ren and Gui days, when the Ding deity within the Xun appears in any of the six positions, Wealth moves. Only, one fears the deity on the consultant's Year Life overcoming and regressing the deity that Ding rides—in that case, the result is not auspicious. On Renshen and Guiyou days seeing Mao—wealth moves through children. On Renwu and Guiwei days seeing Chou, on Renzi and Guichou days seeing Wei—wealth moves through official matters. Among these, Guichou and Guiwei days with all three transmissions being Ghosts are not applicable. On Renchen and Guisi days seeing Hai—wealth moves through brothers. On Renyin and Guimao days seeing You—wealth moves through elders. On Renxu and Guihai days seeing Si—wealth moves through wives and concubines. Among these, Guisi and Guihai days constitute Ding and Horse combined—wealth moves even more swiftly; there may be the joy of taking a wife, but if already married, there is the worry of separation.
Metal Day Encountering Ding Examples: For the two stems Geng and Xin, when the Ding deity within the Xun appears in any of the six positions, misfortune is in motion. On Gengwu and Xinwei days seeing Mao—misfortune moves through wives and concubines, or calamity arrives while seeking wealth. On Gengchen and Xinsi days seeing Chou, on Gengzi and Xinhai days seeing Wei—misfortune moves through elders. On Gengyin and Xinmao days seeing Hai—misfortune moves through offspring. On Gengshen and Xinyou days seeing Si—misfortune moves through official matters. If the deity rides the White Tiger, the misfortune moves with particular speed. It may be resolved if the deity on the consultant's Year Life overcomes the deity that the Six-Ding rides. For those in office consulting about assuming a post, it is exceedingly swift—indeed, one should not wish for deities in the six positions to restrain it.
Hidden Ding Aiding Wealth Pattern: The deity on the Stem forms Wealth, while the deity on the Branch also harbors hidden Ding as Wealth. For example, on the six Ren days, with Wu on the Stem and the Ding deity pressing upon the Branch—bright and hidden Wealth together. The movement of wife's wealth must certainly not be insignificant. The six Gui days have no such example.
Hidden Ding Aiding Ghost Pattern: The deity on the Stem overcomes the Day, while the deity on the Branch also rides Ding overcoming the Day. For example, on the six Geng days with Si on the Stem and the Ding deity pressing upon the Branch. On the six Xin days with Wu on the Stem and the Ding deity pressing upon the Branch. The person suffers calamity while the residence is in turmoil. Only for officials consulting about assuming a post is it extremely rapid; on six Xin days with daytime divination and Wu as Nobleman, it is even more exquisite.
Gui as Closed Mouth—Various Inferences 🤐
Gui is the Closed Mouth. Whenever the Xun tail presses upon the Xun head to begin the sequence, it is called Closed Mouth. Water's nature moistens downward; pressing upon the Xun head is like a person submerged in water, unable to open the mouth. For example, on a Jiashen Day with three transmissions Si, Yin, Hai, on a Yisi Day with three transmissions Chou, Xu, Wei. Such examples are numerous and cannot all be listed. The divination indicates that when requesting someone to speak on one's behalf, the person will remain silent. If riding the Nobleman, petitioning a high official will not be granted; riding the Vermilion Bird, documents and correspondence will not circulate; riding the Hooked Chen, litigation will certainly involve wrongful suppression; riding the Harmony, anger cannot be vented. In divining illness, the patient cannot take food; in divining childbirth, the child must surely be mute. Only pursuing thieves and catching fugitives is favorable.
Salary as Closed Mouth Pattern: For example, on Xinwei Day You pressing upon Yin; on Bingxu, Wuzi Days Si pressing upon Hai; on Yiwei Day Mao pressing upon Shen; on Renxu Day Hai pressing upon Si. The Salary is Closed Mouth and additionally resides in the Day's Extinction position. For divination of one's livelihood bread, attainment is impossible; for divination of illness, death by refusal of food is certain.
Wealth as Closed Mouth: For example, on Bingyin, Dingmao Days seeing You; on Jiaxu, Yihai Days seeing Wei; on Renchen, Guisi Days seeing Si; on Gengzi, Xinchou Days seeing Mao; on Jiachen, Yisi Days seeing Chou; on Wuwu, Jiwei Days seeing Hai. Wealth as Closed Mouth—divination of seeking wealth always fails; if seated in Void Death, it is even worse.
Sky-Rampart Plugging the Ghost Gate—All Endeavors Succeed 🗻
Chen is the Sky-Rampart; Yin is the Ghost Gate. Chen pressing upon Yin to begin the sequence is called the Sky-Rampart Plugging the Ghost Gate. For example, on the six Jia days with three transmissions Chen, Wu, Shen. The Sky-Rampart's qi drums all creatures forth— though there be many ghosts, none can obstruct. All consultations are flourishing and beneficial. If it does not appear in the lessons or transmissions, but rides upon the consultant's Year and Fate, it may also be employed. For example, on a Jichou Day with three transmissions Mao, Si, Wei—the initial is the Day's Ghost, and the middle transmission enters the Ghost territory again—truly an inauspicious lesson. If the consultant's Year Fate is in Yin, relying upon the Sky-Rampart plugging the Ghost Gate, misfortune may be transformed into good fortune. Generally, when the Sky-Rampart presses upon Year and Fate: the Still become Active, the Active become Still; unfavorable consultations turn favorable, favorable ones turn unfavorable. In litigation, one already imprisoned will see release.
The Kui Crossing the Heaven's Gate—Do Nothing 🚧
Xu is the River Kui; Hai is the Heaven's Gate. Xu pressing upon Hai to begin the sequence is called the Kui Crossing the Heaven's Gate. For example, on a Renshen Day with three transmissions Xu, You, Shen. It indicates that all affairs necessarily encounter obstruction and blockage; visiting people brings no meeting; divining theft, the culprit is hard to capture; divining illness, it is mostly a matter of blocked qi. If riding the White Tiger, the obstruction is especially severe. As in the Bingzi and Wuzi days, with Yang Days where By-Comparison is used, it indicates entanglement in matters of the many—because Kui represents the masses. Furthermore, the Sky-Rampart's qi drums all creatures forth, while the Heavenly Kui's qi gathers all creatures inward—it is the Four Seasons Net-Entanglement Killing, catching all in one sweep without remainder. When before the Day and Branch, it resides in the Still position; when in function, it is in the Moving position—one must observe and distinguish carefully.
Nobleman at Full Vitality Aiding the Day—Honor in Seeking Aid 👑
When the lesson obtains the Nobleman riding the Vitality and Mutual-Production qi to begin the sequence, pressing upon the consultant's Year and Fate, it indicates both fame and profit complete. For example, on a Xinsi Day with Yin pressing upon Si to begin the sequence, consulting at night with Yin riding the Nobleman; in spring divination, Yin and Si possess Vitality and Mutual-Production qi. Other examples follow analogously.
Nobleman Covering Stem and Branch: Both Stem and Branch ride the Day and Night Noblemen. For example, on Jiashen Day with Chou above the Stem and Wei above the Branch; on Gengyin Day with Wei above the Stem and Chou above the Branch. It indicates two noblemen orchestrating the achievement of an affair. Beyond the Eight Methods days, there are these additional six lessons: Jiashen, Gengyin, Jimao, Jihai, Guimao, Guihai.
Two Noblemen Mutually Appending Pattern: The Day and Night Noblemen append to each other, appearing in lessons and transmissions. For example, on the six Ding days with three transmissions You, Hai, Chou appending at the start; on the six Bing days with three transmissions Chou, Hai, You appending in transmission; on the six Yi days with the Stem's Yang being Zi and the Stem's Yin being Shen, mutually appending in transmission. It indicates that in petitioning nobles or seeking favor, two noblemen will surely accomplish the matter. If the Night Nobleman is upon the Day Nobleman's position, success in seeking through connections is assured.
Nobleman Everywhere Pattern: For example, on Dingyou Day—Lesson One has You, Lesson Two has Hai, Lesson Three is Hai plus You. The three transmissions are You, Hai, Chou—a total of five Noblemen, called Nobleman Everywhere. When nobility is too abundant, nobility loses its value. Divination here shows affairs without unified direction—in the end, there is no support. Those in office will receive multiple assignments; in litigation, many officials will handle the case. Consulting at night is even worse. Additionally, on Dingsi Day the three transmissions You, Hai, Chou; on Guihai Day the three transmissions Chou, Mao, Si—each also yields five Noblemen. Six Dingwei Day transmissions You, Hai, Chou, and Guichou Day transmissions Mao, Si, Wei each yield six Noblemen. No other cases exist.
Curtain Nobleman Approaching the Stem Pattern: For example, on the six Jia days with daytime divination and Wei upon the Stem; on the six Yi days with daytime divination and Shen upon the Stem. When the Curtain Nobleman approaches the person, those in office receiving this exhibits the image of retirement from office. Only for examination candidates does it indicate success. For an ordinary person, an official living in reclusion will offer support. If supporting the Day as Ghost upon Stem and Branch, illness divined here indicates affliction by deities or spirits.
Sequential Direction Divides Fortune and Misfortune 🔄
When the Nobleman governs unimpeded, all the generals follow in orderly sequence—even encountering harmful influences, the calamity they bring is light. When the Nobleman governs in reverse, all the generals follow in reversed order—even meeting auspicious deities, the grace they bestow is weakened. Each day in this matter may have six such lessons. Moreover, when Si is the Monthly General, for the three stems Jia, Wu, Geng, none of the day's lessons has a reversed Nobleman; when Hai is the Monthly General, for the same three stems, none has an orderly Nobleman—this is precise. (This distinction should not be rigidly observed either; in general, judge by the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of the deities and generals themselves.)
Nobleman at the Door or Imprisoned—Secret Prayer Is Appropriate 🚪
Nobleman Standing at the Private Gate Pattern: Mao is the Outer Gate, You is the Inner Gate. If the Nobleman stands upon Mao or You, it is called the Nobleman Standing at the Private Gate—indicating the nobleman has private matters. To seek help from nobility is inadvisable; only secret strategizing and private prayer are appropriate. In the six Jia days divining during daytime, Chоу stands upon You, the night direction; in nighttime consultation, Wei upon Mao, the daytime direction—this is called the Nobleman Stumbling. Examples: Wuchen Day daytime divination—Chou Nobleman seated on Chen above the Branch; Jiaxu Day nighttime consultation—Wei Nobleman seated on Xu above the Branch.
Nobleman Plugging the Ghost Gate: Misfortune transforms into good fortune. Additionally, there are five lessons: Renxu, Guiyou, Guiwei, Guichou, Guihai. If the Si Nobleman does not appear in the four lessons but rides upon the consultant's Year and Fate, it can also be employed.
Nobleman Ascending the Heaven's Gate Pattern: For the three stems Jia, Wu, Geng, the two Noblemen Chou and Wei pressing upon the earthly branch Hai position—this is called the Nobleman Ascending the Heaven's Gate. The Four Killers are submerged and the Six Spirits are hidden—all consultations are auspicious. The Six Spirits hidden: Flying Serpent approaching Zi leads to âWater-Plunge; Vermilion Bird approaching Chou leads to River-Casting; Hooked Chen approaching Mao is subdued; Sky Void approaching Si transforms; White Tiger approaching Wu means Body-Burning; Dark Warrior approaching Shen means appearance-exposure. The Four Killers submerged: chen, xu, hün, wei—four grave-saturated killing energies are mired and hidden within the four corners. Should this not appear in lessons and transmissions, if the consultant's Year and Fate hold it, it is still most auspicious.
Nobleman Ascending the Heaven's Gate—the Second Form: The Nobleman pressing upon Hai position to begin the sequence. For example, Dinghai Day nighttime consultation with You Nobleman pressing upon Hai; Xinhai Day daytime consultation with Wu Nobleman pressing upon Hai. This is most favorable for official achievements. Another example: Dinghai Day with Prostration-Lesson daytime consultation—the Nobleman with Virtue, also carrying the Horse, presses upon Hai to begin the sequence. In official consultation, one obtains promotion; for examination, success. If it does not enter lessons and transmissions, but the consultant's Year and Fate enters it, one may also employ it.
Nobleman and Virtue Approaching the Person Removes a Myriad Calamities 🛡️
The Nobleman serves as the Day's Virtue pressing upon the Day Stem. For example, on the six Yi days with Shen upon the Stem, nighttime consultation; on the six Ding days with Hai upon the Stem, daytime consultation; on the six Gui days with Si upon the Stem, daytime consultation. When the Nobleman as Day's Virtue approaches the person, even encountering evil influences, calamity may be averted. For example, on Yichou Day with three transmissions You, Chou, Wei in a conjunction damaging the Stem—truly an inauspicious lesson. Yet consulting at night, the initial transmission rides Snake as Ghost, with mutual entrapment from both sides—its power cannot harm the Stem; Shen upon the Stem is the Day's Virtue Nobleman, capable of subduing the assembled influences... thus one may dissolve the woe. Following the analogical pattern in all other cases.
Nobleman Generating the Day Stem Pattern: Each of six Yi Days with Zi atop the Stem, daytime = Nobleman generates the Day Stem. The six Geng each see Wei above- well, night consultation yields amplification. In any Divination, one surely obtains power through a worthy ally. If it also operates as Grand Duke, the better. Geng Day's Chou noble- being a Grave-Form must not be used here.

List<ds_output> Hidden Ding Aiding Ghost Pattern: The deity on the Stem overcomes the Day, while the deity on the Branch also rides Ding overcoming the Day.
