Chapter 5 of 15
奇门遁甲元灵经
This volume revolves around the Eight Gates in charge of affairs, the Nine Palaces' Value Star and Value Envoy, the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of the Ten Heavenly Stems, the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of the Nine Dunes, and the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of the Heavenly Plate叠加 the Earthly Plate, belonging to the Qimen Dunjia spatiotemporal divination system, sharing the same origin with Eight Characters astrology but branching into different applications. Its core is not "whether a certain matter is absolutely auspicious or inauspicious," but rather "the tendency bias under the combination of a certain time, direction, gate, star, and stem."
Kan is the place where yin energy first arises, being the palace of the northern mysterious capital, where the waters of Ren and Gui flourish. Water governs winter, capable of generating wood, extinguishing fire, moistening earth, and chilling metal. Kan is the northern One White, governed by the Xiu Gate. At this time, yang energy ascends and spreads, and all things grow. Construction, military training, marching troops, planning, distant travel, and visiting nobility all go smoothly. Going out through this gate on a yang day meets the yang nobility, on a yin day meets the yin nobility, and one should wear mostly purple and blue-green clothing. In times of prosperity, one encounters the wealthy and noble; in times of decline, the poor and lowly; otherwise, one may encounter disputes and conflicts. If proceeding to the Li Palace, it is an upper-overcoming-lower situation, called great inauspicious oppression.
Kun receives the six yin energies, possessing the virtue of thick support. After the Beginning of Autumn, it gradually turns cool, and all things are about to decline. Metal encountering Kun earth is generated, water encountering it becomes clear, wood encountering it is stored away, fire encountering it loses its brilliance. The earth's qi descends, being the southwest Two Black, governed by the Si Gate. Yin energy is too exuberant, suitable only for executions, burials, and mourning visits. Distant travel brings illness; if one further encounters inauspicious stars, one will surely meet sick people or hear weeping. Proceeding to the Kan Palace, one contends over wealth, the upper overcoming the lower being palace oppression, indicating great inauspiciousness. For example, on the twenty-ninth day of the intercalary fourth month, the Guihai day during the Bingchen hour, in the lower cycle of the Mangzhong solar term, with Jiayin as the stem head, the Tianqin star as the Value Star, and the Si Gate as the Value Envoy, both arriving at the seventh palace, situated in the due west at the Kun deity position. I went from the south of the city westward and halfway indeed encountered a funeral procession, exactly as predicted. Whenever involved in litigation, one must most avoid going out through this gate.
Zhen dwells in the Lantai palace, being the place where thunder bursts forth. Spring brings harmony and disperses qi, yang energy is fully flowing, the wood of Jia and Yi holds its proper position, and forests flourish abundantly. Metal encountering wood is injured, water encountering it is moistened, fire encountering it burns, earth encountering it is cultivated. Being the eastern Three Green, it is governed by the Shang Gate. Suitable for sending out troops to capture enemies, avenging grudges, punishing rebels, fishing, and hunting. Going out through this gate and seeing firelight or people felling trees is inauspicious, indicating encountering thieves. Arriving at Kun is palace oppression, arriving at Gen is also inauspicious. For example, on the eighteenth day of the fourth month of the Xinsi year of Emperor Chongzhen, a great bandit force of tens of thousands plundered Tuzikou in Laiwu and set up camp. The local gentry raised volunteer troops to resist but did not prevail. At night, they sent someone to ask me for a strategy to deploy troops. At that time, it was the Guihai day at the Hai hour, in the lower cycle of the Lixia solar term, yang game seven, with Jiayin as the stem head. At the Hai hour, one obtained Chong as the Value Star and the Shang Gate as the Value Envoy, suitable for going out toward the east. Indeed, as predicted, the night raid greatly defeated the bandits, and the remaining forces were completely pacified. Therefore, each of the nine stars has its own appropriate application, and one need not be constrained by the Fuyin pattern.
Xun is the warm wind, being the time of transition between spring and summer. The six yang numbers are exhausted, and yin energy is about to be released. Metal encountering it is cut down, water encountering it enters the tomb, fire encountering it turns to blaze, earth encountering it enters the storehouse, wood encountering it forms a forest. All things are inspired to move, being the southeast Four Green, governed by the Du Gate. Du means blockage, not suitable for executions; fugitives are difficult to pursue, and one encounters inauspicious people on the road. If one seeks to hide and flee from traces, it seems to have divine assistance. Going out through this gate, one will surely encounter people walking in pairs, or people suffering from ailments of the hands and feet. If arriving at Kun or Gen, all matters go poorly.
The Central Palace is the Yellow Court, being the position of Wu and Ji. The five stars shine together, supporting the eight directions, receiving the irregular qi of the four seasons, also governed by the Si Gate.
Qian is the body of the heavenly image. When yin energy is fully exhausted, the hundred spirits achieve completion, being the time of closure. Wood encountering it becomes shallow, water encountering it becomes clear, fire encountering it is blocked, metal encountering it becomes hard, earth encountering it becomes moist. Being the northwest Six White, it is governed by the Kai Gate. Suitable for distant travel, military expeditions, welcoming guests, and feasting. Going out through this gate, one encounters tea and wine on the road, or sees nobility. If arriving at Zhen or Xun, it indicates verbal disputes.
Dui is the western marsh, being the body of Geng metal. When the stern metal spreads once, ten thousand trees turn withered and yellow. Metal encountering it shines, wood encountering it dies, water encountering it dries up, fire encountering it is extinguished, earth encountering it is cultivated. Being the due west Seven Red, it is governed by the Jing Gate. Suitable for opening and closing in attacking the enemy, where the foe is defeated and we triumph. Auspicious matters become perilous, inauspicious matters remain steadfast, and forcing action leads to capture. Going out through this gate, one encounters people with foot ailments or impaired vision, or hears frightening sounds of conflict. If arriving at Zhen or Xun, calamity comes immediately, the heavenly killing aura being extremely inauspicious.
Gen is the earthen mountain, where yin and yang cycle back, possessing the merit of generation and completion, and the heavenly way is greatly unimpeded. Metal encountering it becomes bright, wood encountering it sprouts, water encountering it is rectified, fire encountering it warms, earth encountering it becomes refined. Being the northeast Eight White, it is governed by the Sheng Gate. All planning matters can be accomplished, and visiting nobility gains closeness. One should not invade or attack, as this incurs heavenly punishment. Drawing water from below this gate and pouring it in, a withered tree can revive from death. Going out through this gate, one encounters skilled artisans, people in black clothing, lone carriages and horses, or people in purple and yellow clothing. If arriving at Kan, one suffers oppression and encounters document-related official penalties.
Li belongs to the fire of Bing, being the essence of Bing and Ding. Pure yin intermingles, and fire flares as qi rises. Metal encountering it melts, wood encountering it transforms, fire encountering it flourishes, earth encountering it dries, water encountering it dies. Being the due south Nine Purple, it is governed by the Jing Gate. Suitable for selecting troops and presenting strategies, breaking through formations and besieged encirclements. Distant travel indicates premature death midway. Going out through this gate, one will surely encounter people with red beards, the noise of birds and pursuing shouts, or encounter food and drink. If arriving at Qian or Dui, it indicates matters of discord and abnormality.
The Xiu Gate serves as the Value Envoy, and Tianpeng as the Value Star, with the star deity named Ziqin, governing water and thieves. When divining about thieves, this is employed. Favorable for peaceful relocation, city construction, camp establishment, fort building, grave placement, and tomb erection—auspicious in spring and summer, inauspicious in autumn and winter. On this day and hour, black clouds will surely arrive before the army to aid military might; red clouds indicate victory; blue, white, and yellow clouds all indicate no victory. Encountering the Sun Qi is auspicious, the Moon Qi is ordinary, and the Star Qi is greatly auspicious. If undertaking construction, relocation, or marriage, there will be injury and loss; if merchants travel to distant places, they will surely encounter harm.
The Si Gate serves as the Value Envoy, and Tianrui as the Value Star, with the star deity named Zicheng, governing fire and earth. Favorable for forming associations and receiving teachings, and undertaking military campaigns. On this day and hour, black clouds are auspicious; white and blue clouds are unfavorable; red clouds indicate thieves. The Moon Qi riding upon it can dispel difficulties; the Star Qi can resolve the calamities of failed attacks, military setbacks, and martial adversities.
The Shang Gate serves as the Value Envoy, and Tianchong as the Value Star, with the star deity named Ziqiao, also called the Thunder Ancestor. Capable of sending out troops to avenge grievances, breaking sieges and surrounding enemies, with might intimidating all directions. If marrying, it is inauspicious, mainly causing financial loss. For officials, it favors military positions. Spring and autumn are inauspicious; repairing stoves is unfavorable. On this day and hour, fierce winds and violent thunder arise, and troops can achieve victory. The Sun Qi and Star Qi are auspicious; the Moon Qi is favorable for military affairs.
The Du Gate serves as the Value Envoy, and Tianfu as the Value Star, with the star deity named Ziqing. Favorable for guarding the Way and settling oneself, cultivating propriety and establishing teachings, and raising troops and launching campaigns. In spring and summer, marriage and relocation are auspicious; in autumn and winter, unfavorable. On this day and hour, blue clouds are auspicious; black and white clouds are inauspicious. When the Three Wonders encounter this, all plans succeed.
The Central Palace has no gate; in yang遁, the Sheng Gate is borrowed as the Value Envoy, and in yin遁, the Si Gate is borrowed as the Value Envoy; in yang遁, Tianren serves as the Value Star, and in yin遁, Tianrui serves as the Value Star. The original palace star is Tianqin, with the star deity named Zigong. Favorable for writing talismans, performing rituals, sacrifices, military campaigns, relocation, commerce, and burials. Civil officials assuming office is greatly auspicious. Auspicious in autumn and winter, inauspicious in spring and summer. Clear weather favors military action. When the Three Wonders obtain their envoy, all plans are especially auspicious.
The Kai Gate serves as the Value Envoy, and Tianxin as the Value Star, with the star deity named Zinang. Favorable for writing talismans and compounding medicines. Auspicious in autumn and winter, inauspicious in spring and summer; encountering the Wonders is greatly auspicious.
The Jing Gate serves as the Value Envoy, and Tianzhu as the Value Star, with the star deity named Ziwei. Favorable for defense only; all else is unfavorable. If blue clouds appear, the army will fall into disorder of its own accord; red and black clouds require vigilance against spies; yellow clouds bring fright. The Sun Qi allows concealment without trace; the Star Qi and Moon Qi are inauspicious.
The Sheng Gate serves as the Value Envoy, and Tianren as the Value Star, with the star deity named Zishen. Favorable for military campaigns, marriage, assuming office, and visiting nobility—auspicious; construction and repairs are unfavorable. Spring and summer are auspicious. If light clouds appear, all eight directions are auspicious; encountering the Wonders is auspicious.
The Jing Gate serves as the Value Envoy, and Tianying as the Value Star, with the star deity named Ziwei. Favorable for distant travel and presenting writings; all else is unfavorable. On this day and hour, red clouds are not to be used. Encountering the Sun Qi, thunder resounds in response; the Moon and Star Wonders are inauspicious. If the star is in decline, extinction, or deprecated state, when going out one should call the name of the star deity to protect oneself—such as calling Ziqin when going out through Tianpeng.
When traveling far or going out, one should always proceed from an auspicious gate toward the appropriate direction, call upon the deity of that star and gate, walk sixty paces, then turn left into the Taiyin, which is greatly auspicious.

This volume is a time-space divination text of Qimen Dunjia; it contains no Eight-Character natal chart examples of "Qian Zao" (male) or "Kun Zao" (female), thus no such case components are inserted.
This volume constructs a multi-layered decision-making model: the Eight Doors define the scene-based fortune or misfortune, the Nine Stars, the Envoy and the Commander define the underlying force at play, the Ten Heavenly Stems accompanied by spiritual signs define portents and prescriptions, the Nine Shields and Three Deceptions define high-level strategies, and the Heavenly Plate over Earthly Plate determines the fine-grained reading after stems determine stacking. It emphasizes that fortune and misfortune are not isolated but arise from the combined action of "door, star, spirit, stem, time, and direction."
In ancient times, Qimen was largely used for military affairs, justice, travel, and construction. Today it can be reframed as a spatiotemporal risk and opportunity assessment tool:
