If additionally the Grand Duke and Monthly Commander arrive on auspicious stars to generate it, promotion will surely ascend to the highest court echelons. Conversely, if there is only an auspicious configuration without vigor, or only vigor without an auspicious configuration, or even both vigor and auspicious configuration but the Grand Duke and Monthly Commander do not come to generate it—in none of these cases will promotion occur. Divination for selection and transfer follows the same principles.
Example One: In a ji year during Great Cold's upper yuan, Yang Dun Bureau Three, on a bing-shen day at yi-wei hour, the Open Gate falls in the Seventh Palace. The Open Gate is inherently Metal, and the Dui Seventh Palace is also Metal—same category mutual reinforcement constitutes vigor; additionally, an auspicious odd (Qi) and day-star combine with it; moreover, the Grand Duke of the ji year rides the Heavenly Assistant Star in the Li Ninth Palace, generating the Dui Seventh Palace—this indicates certain promotion without doubt. Furthermore, observe which Heavenly Stem the Grand Duke falls upon, and use the year or month corresponding to that stem as the timing of promotion. Alternatively, one may use the Value Star (Zhi Fu) falling palace for judgment, not necessarily the Grand Duke. This is because the Ministry of Personnel's promotion of officials corresponds precisely to the Value Star spirit.
Example Two: During Beginning of Spring's middle yuan, Yang Dun Bureau Five, on a yi-geng day at ding-si hour, the Open Gate arrives at the Ninth Palace. Fire comes to overcome Metal—this is imprisonment in the ghostly direction. [If asking about certain promotion,] although the Value Star in the Kun Palace shows signs of generating Metal, the original palace is not vigorous, and thus no benefit accrues.
For all divinations concerning fortune after assuming office, the judgment is based on the direction the official faces at the time of assumption. For example, if the yamen sits facing west toward east, examine the palace-spirit obtained in the east; if sitting east facing west, examine the western palace-spirit; north-south follows the same logic.
In general, examine the auspicious configurations obtained in the faced direction. Those achieving auspicious configurations will ultimately be promoted; those without auspicious configurations but with vigorous stars face demotion and degradation; those in rest, imprisonment, or decline face dismissal from office. If encountering inauspicious configurations, this indicates being taken for interrogation. If encountering such inauspicious configurations as Returning Yin, Lying Yin, Five Non-Encounters, Entering Tomb, Paradox Configurations, or Flying/Hidden Disorders, then regardless of direction, one knows it is inauspicious without further examination.
Example One: Yang Dun Bureau One, on a ding-ren day at bing-wu hour, one assumes office with the yamen sitting north facing south. In this configuration, gui (the sixth celestial stem) falls with the Earth Plate's Ninth Palace at the Obstructed Gate—no auspicious configuration, indicating demotion and transfer.
Example Two: Yang Dun Bureau Four, on a ding-ren day at gui-mao hour, one assumes office with the yamen sitting south facing north. The Heavenly Servant Star adds to the Earth Plate's ding odd, combining with the Rest Gate and promotion star; the White Tiger faces the direction—indicating promotion.
The palace where the Heavenly Bird Star (Tianqin) falls represents the capital; the remaining palaces represent outer regions. The Six Symbols (Liuyi) and Three Wonders (Sanqi) of each palace serve as the basis for territorial correspondences. If jia and wu share a palace, use jia on yang days and wu on yin days.
If the palace where the Heavenly Net Star (Tianpeng) falls has the Open Gate above, the region is beset by banditry; if it has Six Geng, military unrest is indicated; if neither flood nor drought afflicts it, then the locality is peaceful. Distance is determined by the correspondence between one's home region and the posting region.
Use the Year Stem's Earth Plate position in one's original palace as the primary reference, examining the Heaven Plate's star and gate. Those obtaining auspicious configurations will return home in glory; those with auspicious configurations who nevertheless commit offenses involving Punishment Strikes, Flying/Hidden Disorders, Paradox configurations, or whose original stem palace carries Robbery-Death (Jiesha) or Funeral-Door (Sangmen) punishments—these officials will die in office without good end. Those without auspicious configurations but obtaining odd stars will return with honor; those without odd stars will be dismissed; those with inauspicious configurations will be taken for interrogation.
If the Open Gate falls in a direction of ghost-decline, rest, or imprisonment, or carries Punishment Strikes, Entering Tomb, or Coercion/Restraint, it is greatly inauspicious. When the Grand Duke is injured, the matter originates from the court; when the Monthly Commander is injured, the matter originates from colleagues and subordinates; when Tian Yi is injured, the matter originates from remonstrating ministers; when the Value Envoy is injured, the matter originates from censors; when the Value Star is injured, the matter originates from regional military commanders. When encountering the Heavenly Net, one will certainly be manacled and arrested. When the Heaven Plate suffers attack from below, the Earth Plate suffers restraint, or the front and rear encounter coercion, investigation and prosecution are certain. If the configuration still holds vitality, only punishment and demotion result; if vitality is lost, one fears for life itself.
For山林 hermits and officials long dismissed who seek summons, the Grand Duke represents imperial grace, the Monthly Commander the Ministry of Personnel, and the Day Stem oneself. Only when the stars of the Grand Duke and Monthly Commander jointly generate the palace occupied by the Day Stem, and the Day Stem's falling palace obtains a good configuration, does this indicate re-appointment. Otherwise, it cannot be achieved.
When entering a yamen to assume duties, the Open Gate represents the superior, and the Value Envoy represents oneself. If the Open Gate's palace generates the Value Envoy's palace, and one obtains the Three Wonders and vigorous-phase stars, this is greatly auspicious. Mutual overcoming with the superior's palace indicates inauspiciousness. Rest or imprisonment is likewise unfavorable.
The Value Star represents one's superior, and Tian Yi represents oneself (the subordinate). If the Value Star's palace overcomes the Tian Yi palace, or the Tian Yi palace generates the Value Star palace, leave will not be granted. If the Value Star generates the Tian Yi palace, or Tian Yi overcomes the Value Star's palace, leave will certainly be granted. If the two palaces are comparable (identical), leave will not be granted.
Judge by the relationship between Six Ding and the Value Envoy's palace: mutual generation means speed; mutual overcoming means delay. Also observe in which palace Six Ding generates—use that palace's earthly branch and celestial stem to determine the date.
