Chapter 5 of 10
奇门遁甲统宗大全
🔥 The mysteries of the forward and reverse movements of Yin and Yang are limitless: The Winter Solstice and Summer Solstice, as the two extremes [of the year], cause the cyclical numbers to return to the Luo River Writing's Nine Palaces. If one can thoroughly comprehend the principles of Yin and Yang transformation, the myriad phenomena of heaven and earth can be condensed within the span of a single palm. The transformations of the Three Powers (Heaven, Earth, Human) give rise to the Upper, Middle, and Lower Yuan; the Eight Trigrams give rise to the Eight Dun Men (Hidden Doors).
"Dun" (遁) means "to conceal" (隐). The Six Jia are hidden beneath the Six Yi, hence the term "Dun Jia" (Escaping/Concealing Jia). Using the numbers of the sacred tortoise and the Luo River Writing to discuss the directions associated with the Eight Trigrams: Left 3, Right 7; 9 on the head, 1 on the feet; 2 and 4 as shoulders; 6 and 8 as feet; 5 resides in the center to fill the abdomen. The Central Palace is lodged within the Kun Palace, embodying the principle in the Book of Changes of Kun representing the Mother. Now, inferring the doors generated by the Eight Trigrams, hence the name "Eight Dun Doors."
The Nine Stars (Xing Fu / Star Talisman) move according to the Hour Stem, while the Eight Doors (Zhi Shi / Suitable Envoy) closely follow the Zhi Fu (Value Talisman). The Xing Fu refers to the Nine Stars; the Zhi Shi refers to the Eight Doors; Tian Yi refers to the Zhi Fu. The Hour Stem refers to Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. In a forward (Yang) sequence, they're arranged as One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine; in reverse, as Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One.
For urgent matters, rely on the Deities (Shen); for non-urgent matters, rely on the Doors (Men); advance toward the Three [Auspicious Doors] and avoid the Five [Inauspicious Doors] – thus Heaven's Way naturally favors you. If a matter is urgent and no auspicious Qin Men configuration is available, employ the "Jade Maiden Reverses Closure" technique to arrange the Six Yi and proceed, this being the method of divine mechanism (involving the spirits). If circumstances permit leisure, one must go out through an auspicious gate. The classic says: Advance toward the Three auspicious gates and avoid the Five inauspicious gates, one can dwell indeed in safety. If using the divine mechanism method, what is inauspicious may turn auspicious; this is Heaven's advantageous arrangement. If one obtains the Yi Qi and also encounters auspicious gates, recite the incantations for Yi Qi and similar, proceeding from that direction ensures myriad affairs become truely auspicious.
Tian Fu, Tian Chong, Tian Ren, Tian Qin, and Tian Xin are auspicious stars; Tian Peng, Tian Ying, Tian Rui, and Tian Zhu are ominous stars. Among these, when [that hour's sky star] is Fu, Qin, or Xin, it is considered Great Auspicious; Ren and Zhong indicate Minor Auspicious; Peng and Shui being the stars indicating greater danger whereas Ying stands good chances! If auspicious stars happen not to match a useful configuration concerning specific temples forming opening doors pathways respective according their standard positions--their employment nonetheless remains fitting selections remains usage adequate to those certain ends posited toward avoiding hazards at least finding helpful provisions now regardless corresponding inability meeting inquisition conditions demand final assessment safety--in worst find broad consolation still enabling beneficial conduct cautiously plus further. Adding one Yin star to the first pal Cong constitutes "Bi" (Open/internal Principle/opening portal), while one Yang star added constitutes "Kai"(opening). The first palace marks do honor endings respectively delineating substantial fundamentals across chi actual states producing results assessing benefit orientation: consultations finding 'opens' provides welcome signs—prognosis: auspicious. That unfitting event avoid risky. Long-distance messages/re unfamiliar, positions noting his where itinerary one possible line standing later unavailable manner contrary upon results ('en' carries those indications!)...
The fourfold Heavenly Net (Tian Wang Si Zhang) provides no path of escape; the forward and reverse conformations of Yin Yang yield inexhaustibly wonders. Calendar scholars call "Harmony Days" as "Exclusive Days," and "Submission Days" as "Attack Days."
Five Yang Hours (Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu): Favor the guest in military affairs; appropriate to strike first. All undertakings—dispatching troops for conquest, long journeys seeking wealth, establishing states and cities, securing altars of state, governing the people, undertaking martial affairs, entering officialdom to meet superiors, moving residences, and marriage—are auspicious, except that fleeing fugitives are difficult to apprehend. The classic says: "Acting in yang is advantageous for the guest, for yang stems receive the generative qi of the east; in yang hours, qi ascends."
Five Yin Hours (Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui): Favor the host in military affairs; appropriate to respond from behind. The above-mentioned undertakings are all inauspicious, except that fugitives may be captured. The classic says: "Acting in yin is advantageous for the host, for yin stems receive the killing qi of the west."
| Eight Gates | Appropriate | Inappropriate |
|---|---|---|
| Open Gate | Campaigns, planning, entering officialdom to meet superiors, taking examinations, long journeys, marriage, moving residences, commerce, construction | Governance (subject to private surveillance) |
| Rest Gate | Audience with rulers, visiting the eminent, assuming official posts, marriage, moving residences, commerce, construction—all affairs auspicious | Executing punishments and adjudicating lawsuits |
| Life Gate | Campaigns, planning, entering officialdom to meet superiors, marriage, moving residences—all affairs auspicious | Burials and funerals |

The core of "The Secret Ode of Qimen Dunjia" lies in constructing a spatiotemporal holographic model: using the Nine Palaces of Luoshu as the base map, it superimposes four layers of systems—the Nine Stars (heaven), Eight Gates (human), Eight Spirits (divine), and Three Wonders and Six Instruments (earth)—onto the same spatiotemporal coordinates. Through the forward and reverse dispersal of Yin and Yang Dun, it simulates the flow of cosmic vital energy. Its fundamental logic is:
From a modern perspective, the essence of Qimen Dunjia is an ancient decision support system. Its value lies not in mystical powers but in providing a structured analytical framework:
The deepest philosophical significance of Qimen Dunjia lies in the dialectical relationship between "concealment" and "manifestation." "Dun" means to hide—the Six Jia concealed beneath the Six Instruments, employing concealment as the method, retreating in order to advance. This resonates with Laozi's thought that "the greatest sound is silent, the greatest image is formless"—true power often does not manifest directly but lies潜伏 within structures.
The doctrine of "the fourfold heavenly net" reveals the objective existence of uncontrollable factors: when Liu Gui prevails, it is as if a heavenly net笼罩 over all; forcing action leads to entanglement and entrapment, leaving only "escape" as a viable path. This is not passive fatalism but rather a wise summation of "when the current cannot be opposed, one should flow with it." In reality, when systemic risk arrives, cutting losses and retreating is sometimes the only correct choice.
The concepts of "opening" and "closing" touch upon the closing and opening of opportunity windows: a Yin star added to a palace signifies "closure," while a Yang star added signifies "opening." Distant messengers and travelers arrive when it opens and fail to come when it closes—communication, opportunities, and information all have "window periods," and once missed, circumstances become entirely different. This is continuous with the Chinese cultural worldview of "time, destiny, and fortune."
Finally, the closing annotation's statement, "military opportunities are decided in an instant; there is absolutely no reason to consult annual or monthly calculations," articulates the boundaries of applicability for all divination systems: the more complex the system (such as year/month/day Qimen), the lower the practical application value may become; what truly functions in rapidly changing real-world scenarios is the most core and simplest principle. The implication for modern decision science is: simple models outperform complex systems in rapid decision-making.
