Chapter 5 of 11
御定奇门宝鉴
The opening verses state: The Yellow Emperor Xuanyuan fought a protracted war with Chiyou at Zhuolu for many years, without end. Legend has it that he unexpectedly received a talisman formula granted by the Heavenly Deities, whereupon he ascended an altar to offer sacrifices and practiced with utmost sincerity. A divine dragon emerged from the Luo River bearing a chart on its back, and a colorful phoenix descended from the azure clouds carrying a text in its beak. The Yellow Emperor therefore ordered Feng Hou to interpret and compose this into written form, and thus Qimen Dunjia began. Initially, there were one thousand and eighty situations; Jiang Taigong reduced them to seventy-two; by the Han dynasty, Zhang Liang further refined them to eighteen situations, making it an exquisite art. To study Qimen, one must first arrange the Nine Palaces on the palm, where the sums horizontally, vertically, and diagonally all equal fifteen.
The Nine Palaces are: 1 Kan, 2 Kun, 3 Zhen, 4 Xun, 5 Center, 6 Qian, 7 Dui, 8 Gen, 9 Li, taking the Former Heaven numbers, with sums of fifteen in every direction.
Next, coordinate the Eight Trigrams with the Eight Solar Terms, where each solar term governs three qi periods; this is the orthodox system. The Yin and Yang Two Duns are divided into forward and reverse movements, and each qi is further divided into three yuan periods, the subtlety of which ordinary people cannot fathom.
The Eight Trigrams are: Qian, Kan, Gen, Zhen, Xun, Li, Kun, Dui. The Eight Solar Terms are: Beginning of Spring, Spring Equinox, Beginning of Summer, Summer Solstice, Beginning of Autumn, Autumn Equinox, Beginning of Winter, Winter Solstice. "Governing three" means each solar term governs three qi periods, and the eight solar terms together govern the twenty-four qi periods. Specifically:
| Solar Term | Governed Qi | Corresponding Palace |
|---|---|---|
| Winter Solstice | Minor Cold, Major Cold | Kan Palace |
| Beginning of Spring | Rain Water, Awakening of Insects | Gen Palace |
| Spring Equinox | Pure Brightness, Grain Rain | Zhen Palace |
| Beginning of Summer | Lesser Fullness, Grain in Ear | Xun Palace |
| Summer Solstice | Minor Heat, Major Heat | Li Palace |
| Beginning of Autumn | End of Heat, White Dew | Kun Palace |
| Autumn Equinox | Cold Dew, Frost Descent | Dui Palace |
| Beginning of Winter | Minor Snow, Major Snow | Qian Palace |
"One qi, three yuan" means that each qi period lasts fifteen days and is divided into upper, middle, and lower sections. "The Two Duns divided into forward and reverse" means that the Yang Dun's three yuan periods change once every five days, all moving forward. For example, at the Winter Solstice, the Yang Dun moves forward from Palace 1, Palace 7, and Palace 4; the Yin Dun's three yuan periods also change every five days, all moving in reverse. For example, at the Summer Solstice, the Yin Dun moves in reverse from Palace 9, Palace 3, and Palace 6.
"Every five days a new yuan arrives; Transcending the Spirit and Receiving the Qi are the standards. Before the Two Extremes there is the intercalary oddity; at this time the accumulated qi is multiplied."
Transcending means exceeding. Spirit refers to the day stem, namely the Jia or Ji heads. Receiving means welcoming. Qi refers to the solar terms. Transcending the Spirit means the solar term has not yet arrived but the Jia-Ji head has arrived first; this is called "transcending." Receiving the Qi means the solar term has arrived first but the Jia-Ji head arrives later; this is called "receiving." Direct Conferral means when the day on which one of the four heads—Jiazi, Jimao, Jiawu, Jiyou—falls coincides exactly with the corresponding solar term. After the transcending and receiving process, there will be no further transcending. Transcending does not exceed ten days, and receiving does not exceed five days. If the head arrives seven days early, an intercalary adjustment must be made. The method of intercalation requires that it be placed after the Mangzhong and Daxue solar terms each year, because these two terms are closest to the Two Extremes, the points of celestial and terrestrial division, and intercalation must be arranged at these points.
"Recognize the Nine Palaces as the Nine Stars; the Eight Gates follow the Nine Stars in sequence. When the Nine Palaces encounter Jia, it is the Direct Talisman; the Direct Envoys of the Eight Gates are thereby made clear."
The Nine Palaces range from Kan 1 to Li 9. The Nine Stars range from Tianpeng to Tianying. The Eight Gates range from Xiu Men to Kai Men. When a Nine Palace encounters Jia (the head of a sequence), that star is the Direct Talisman, and the Direct Envoy of the Eight Gates is accordingly made clear.
For example, in the Yang Dun first situation at the Winter Solstice, Jiazi is in Kan. From the Jiazi hour through the Guiyou hour, the Tianpeng star of the Kan palace is the Direct Talisman, and the Xiu Men gate of the same palace is the Direct Envoy. The gate to which the Direct Talisman arrives is the Direct Envoy, changing every ten hours, with clear basis.
For instance, in the Yang first situation, after the ten hours from Jiazi to Guiyou have passed, Tianpeng and Xiu Men cease their duties. Then, at the Jiaxu hour, Jiaxu is in Kun, so the Tianrui star of the Kun palace becomes the Direct Talisman, and the Si Men gate becomes the Direct Envoy, governing until the Guiwei hour, ten hours later, when another change occurs.
"The Direct Talisman always departs from the hour stem; the Direct Envoy follows the hour branch in forward or reverse direction." Hour stem refers to the Heavenly Stem of the hour in question, namely Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. Jia is hidden under the six yi—Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui—and the six yi and the three qi each occupy one palace. One simply looks at where the hour stem is located and places the Direct Talisman upon it; this is the constant method. The Direct Envoy looks at where the hour stem is located and is dispatched in forward or reverse order according to the Yin or Yang Dun. For example, in the Yang first situation Jiazi is in Kan 1, so Yichou is in Kun 2, Bingyin in Zhen 3, passing through 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and returning to Kan 1, all moving forward. In the Yin ninth situation Jiazi is in Li 9, so Yichou is in Gen 8, Bingyin in Dui 7, passing through 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and returning to Li 9, all moving in reverse.
"The six Jia are named the six yi; the Three Qi are Yi, Bing, Ding."
The six Jia are: Jiazi, Jiaxu, Jiashen, Jiawu, Jiayin [translator's note: the original text does not list Jiachen here, but later content includes Jia辰 as Direct Talisman adding to Earth Xun 4, and the six Jia should normally include Jiachen]. The six yi are: Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. The Three Qi are: Yi as the Sun Qi, Bing as the Moon Qi, Ding as the Star Qi.
"In the Yang Dun, place the yi forward and the qi in reverse; in the Yin Dun, place the yi in reverse and the qi forward." After the Winter Solstice, in the Yang Dun, the six yi are placed forward. For example, in the Yang first situation, Wu begins at Kan 1, Ji at Kun 2, Geng at Zhen 3, Xin at Xun 4, Ren at Center 5, Gui at Qian 6; the three qi are placed in reverse, as in the first situation Yi is at Li 9, Bing is at Gen 8 [the original reads "Chen 8," but according to the Nine Palaces it should be Gen 8], Ding at Dui 7. After the Summer Solstice, in the Yin Dun, the six yi are placed in reverse. For example, in the Yin ninth situation, Wu begins at Li 9, Ji at Gen 8, Geng at Dui 7, Xin at Qian 6, Ren at Center 5, Gui at Xun 4; the three qi are placed forward, as in the first situation Yi at Kan 1, Bing at Kun 2, Ding at Zhen 3. All other situations follow this pattern.
"When an auspicious gate happens to combine with the Three Qi, the classics say a hundred matters are appropriate." Kai, Xiu, and Sheng are the three most auspicious spirits of the northern White. If one of the Three Qi is also combined, this is called obtaining both the qi and the gate; with the additional support of one or two auspicious stars, it is most complete. At such a time, it is fitting to dispatch troops, issue commands, and all matters proceed smoothly.
One must also carefully examine the other palaces to ensure there are no minor defects. Even if one obtains the three gates Kai, Xiu, Sheng and combines with the three qi Yi, Bing, Ding, it is not entirely auspicious. One must still avoid violations in the remaining palaces. The ancients concealed the profound mysteries of heaven without explaining the reasons. There are more than a hundred inauspicious configurations in Qimen; if one is not violated another is. Without intensive study, one cannot know them all. If there is a violation in another palace, but one has the support of the Direct Talisman, Direct Envoy, and hour stem, then there is no harm. Because the Talisman, Envoy, and hour stem are the momentary masters of the Three Qi and Eight Gates. If using the Yi qi, one must especially avoid the palaces in cases of "fleeing" and "reckless" configurations, such as Geng over Yi, which is not auspicious; but configurations like "throwing into the river" and "premature demise" need not be avoided.
"When the Three Qi obtain dispatch, they are truly usable; when the six Jia encounter them, it is no small supplement." This means when the Direct Envoy of one of the three auspicious gates adds to the qi and also encounters the Direct Talisman. Whenever the three qi Yi, Bing, Ding combine with the Direct Envoys of Kai, Xiu, and Sheng, this is called the Three Qi Obtaining Dispatch, and it is genuinely usable. If the Direct Talisman's Jia also arrives, undertakings are especially successful in all directions. The old interpretation is incorrect.
"When Yi encounters Dog and Horse, Bing encounters Rat and Monkey; the sixth Ding, the Jade Maiden, rides Dragon and Tiger. Again there are the Three Qi roaming the Six Yi, named the Jade Maiden guarding the gate." According to the context, it should read: "Named the Three Qi roaming the Six Yi; again there is the Jade Maiden guarding the gate." This refers to the Earth plate Yi qi obtaining Jiawu and Jiaxu as Direct Talismans arriving, while the Heaven plate Yi roams in the yi of Jiawu and Jiaxu; this is the Yi qi roaming the yi, and similarly for Bing and Ding. This is what is called the Three Qi Roaming the Six Yi. A corrupted version in popular circulation mistransmitted this, thereby confusing roaming as guarding the gate, which is thoroughly incomprehensible. The Jade Maiden Guarding the Gate refers to the Ding qi guarding the Direct Envoy's gate.
If one wishes to engage in matters of secrecy and union, one may seek within this. At the time of guarding the gate, it is fitting to conduct secret or amorous affairs.
"The Three Heavenly Gates and the Four Earthly Doors... all undertakings go forth from within these."
You, Mao, and Wei are the Three Heavenly Gates. Using the monthly general added to the official hour, observe the direction in which the three characters Mao, You, and Wei of the Heaven plate fall. For example, with Si as the monthly general added to the Wu hour, count forward: Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen. Thus, Shen, Chen, and Xu are the Three Heavenly Gates. There are four Earthly Doors. Using the monthly construction added to the hour of matters, observe the directions in which the four characters Wei, Chu, Ding, Kai fall. For example, in the Jihai year, eighth month, Wu hour, with the construction added to Wu and turning forward: Wei at Chu, Xu at Ding, Chou at Wei, Chen at Kai. Thus, the four directions Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei obtain the Four Earthly Doors.
"Liuhe, Taiyin, and Taichang—these three celestial bodies are the original Earthly Private Gates. If they further receive illumination from Qimen, a hundred undertakings outside the door are all joyful." Using the heavenly monthly general added to the official hour, observe in which palace the Noble Person rests. Then, from the Noble Person start: Noble, Teng, Zhu, Liu, Gou, Qing, Kong, Bai, Chang, Xuan, Yin, Hou, moving forward or in reverse. The Yang noble arises from the Former Heaven Kun; at Zi, count Jiawu forward. Yi and Gui are at Chou; Geng combines with Yi and Wu with Gui, taking the combination of stems and virtues as the Noble Person. Therefore, the Yang nobility of the Wu and Geng stems resides at Chou. The Ji stem is at Wei; Jia combines with Ji, so the Yang nobility of the Jia stem is at Wei. The Yin noble arises from the Later Heaven Kun; at Shen, count Zi in reverse; Yi and Gui are at Wei; Geng and Wu combine, so the Yin nobility of the Jia stem is at Chou. From Hai to Chen, Yin and Yang nobility move forward; from Si to Xu, Yin and Yang nobility move in reverse. If one obtains the three spirits Liuhe, Taiyin, and Taichang together with Qimen arriving at the same direction, a hundred matters are greatly auspicious.
"Tai Chong Heavenly Horse is most noble... mountains of swords and halberds are not to be feared." Using the monthly general added to the official hour and turning forward, wherever one encounters the character Mao, that is the direction of Tai Chong, the Heavenly Horse. In urgent matters, departing from the Heavenly Horse direction allows one to avoid calamity.
"Three is the Pneuma of Growth, Five is of Death... the true mechanism of creation must be remembered." The classics say: The Heavenly Way is not distant; the Three and Five repeat; approach the Three and avoid the Five, dwell alone in vastness. For example, at the Winter Solstice, Yang first situation, Jia-Ji day, Zi hour, with Xiu Men as the Direct Envoy. At the Bingyin hour in the early dawn, one obtains Three, which is the qi of growth, auspicious; at the Wuchen hour at morning meal, one obtains Five, which is the qi of harm, inauspicious for all matters. It also says: In doubled Yang there is doubled auspiciousness; in doubled Yin there is doubled inauspiciousness. Doubled Yang resides in Palace 3; doubled Yin in Palace 7.
"Among these, Fu Yin is most fierce... one must know that this is the Fan Yin palace." Heaven plate Tianpeng added to Earth plate Tianpeng is called Fu Yin. Heaven plate Tianpeng added to Earth plate Tianying is called Fan Yin.
"The Eight Gates also repeat in the same manner... all matters are inauspicious and not fit for use." Sheng Men remaining in its original palace at Sheng Men is called Fu Yin. Sheng Men added to its opposite palace, Si Men, is called Fan Yin and is inauspicious. At such a time, even if one obtains an auspicious gate, everything shifts and changes repeatedly. All others follow this analogy.
"How fierce are the Six Yi's Striking Punishments... Yin, Si, Chen, Chen, and Wu punish Wu." Jiazi, the Direct Talisman, added to Zhen 3; Jiaxu added to Kun 2; Jiashen added to Gen 8; Jiayin added to Xun 4; these are called mutual punishment. Jiawu added to Li 9 and Jiachen added to Xun 4 are called self-punishment.
"The Three Qi entering the Tomb deserves careful scrutiny... the Star Qi approaching the eighth palace is likewise." Yi, the Sun Qi, below reaches Kun Palace 2; the Wood reservoir is at Wei; it further reaches Qian Palace 6, where the Fire reservoir is at Xu; Ding qi reaches Gen 8, also because Yin is born at You and buried at Chou. Even when encountering the Three Qi, all are inauspicious; undertakings bring misfortune.
"Also there is the hour stem entering the Tomb palace... Ding, Chou, and Ji coincide with inauspiciousness." On Yi-Geng days, the Dingchou, Guiwei, and Bingxu hours; on Bing-Xin days, the Jichou, Renchen, and Wuxu hours—these are all cases of the hour stem entering the Tomb.
"At the Five Non-Encounter times, the dragon is not clear... on Jia day, one must know to fear the Geng hour." On Jia days, the Gengwu hour; Yi days, the Xinsi hour; Bing days, the Renchen hour; Ding days, the Guimao hour; Wu days, the Jiayin hour; Ji days, the Yichou hour; Geng days, the Bingzi hour; Xin days, the Dingyou hour; Ren days, the Wushen hour; Gui days, the Jiwei hour—all of these are the Seven Killers hours, where Yang overcomes Yang and Yin overcomes Yin.
"The Qi and the Gate together with Taiyin... all undertakings and actions must certainly follow the heart." After the Winter Solstice, in the Yang Dun, the second position before the Direct Talisman is Taiyin; after the Summer Solstice, in the Yin Dun, the second position after the Direct Talisman is Taiyin. When the Qi, Gate, and Taiyin all three arrive together, it is greatly auspicious, but difficult to obtain. If one of the Qi or Gate coincides with Taiyin, it is also auspicious.
"Moreover, obtaining advantange from the Direct Talisman and Direct Envoy... a hundred battles, a hundred victories—you must remember." For example, if the Direct Talisman is at Li, then one with one's back to Li strikes Kan; if the Direct Talisman is at Qian, one's back to Qian strikes Xun. This differs from sitting in solitude and striking at the void.
"The palace where the Tianyi spirit resides... take up Tianying and sit to strike Tianpeng." Tianyi is the Direct Talisman.
"Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu—the five Yang hours... in Yin hours, underground likewise." The five Yang hours of Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, and Wu are advantageous for the guest, fitting to make the first move, raising banners, sounding drums, displaying force and prowess for victory. The five Yin hours of Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui are advantageous for the host, fitting to delay the move, muffling drums and holding bit through silence, then deciding battle after the enemy arrives.
"If one sees the Three Qi in the five Yang... again it is fitting to be the host—consider carefully." During Yang hours, it is advantageous to be the guest; during Yin hours, to be the host. Whether Yin or Yang Dun, all are discussed according to this.
"Three positions before the Direct Talisman is Liuhe; two positions behind is Jiudi." For example, in the Yang Dun Kan 1 Palace, Jiazi hour, the Direct Talisman at Kan, the nine spirits are placed in reverse: Direct Talisman in Kan, Jiutian in Qian, Jiudi in Dui, Xuanwu in Kun, Baihu in Li, Liuhe in Xun, Taiyin in Zhen, Tengshe in Gen. In the Yin Dun Kan 1 Palace, Jiazi hour, the Direct Talisman is at Kan and the nine spirits are placed forward: Direct Talisman at Kan, Jiutian at Gen, Jiudi at Zhen, Xuanwu at Xun, Baihu at Li, Liuhe at Kun, Taiyin at Dui, Tengshe at Qian. Direct Talisman, Jiutian, Jiudi, Taiyin, and Liuhe are the five auspicious spirits.
"Above Jiutian is where one may best display troops... the Human Escape is known as Taiyin." Heaven plate Bing qi with Sheng Men combined with Earth plate Ding, obtaining the shielding of the moon's brilliance, is the Heavenly Escape; Heaven plate Yi qi with Kai Men combined with Earth plate Ji, obtaining the shielding of the sun's essence, is the Earthly Escape; Heaven plate Ding qi with Xiu Men combined with Taiyin, obtaining the shielding of the star's essence, is the Human Escape.
"Sheng Men with Liu Bing combined with Liu Ding... the Human Escape does not supersede this." Sheng Men with Liu Bing and Liu Ding together is the Heavenly Escape; Kai Men with Liu Yi and Liu Ji together is the Earthly Escape; Xiu Men with Liu Ding and Taiyin together is the Human Escape.
"Geng is Venus ... Bing is Mars ... the land of metal and fire is the evil spirit." Heaven plate Geng added to Earth plate Bing is White Entering Blaze, also known as metal entering the land of fire; Tianzhu, Tianxin, Jing Men, and Kai Men arriving at the Li Palace is also so. Heaven plate Bing added to Earth plate Geng is Blaze Entering White, also known as fire entering the land of metal; Tianying and Jing Men arriving at the Qian and Dui palaces also constitutes this. The songs say: Where the two stars add on, the pneuma is fierce and overwhelming; even if one obtains the qi and gate, be wary and do not go forth. At such a time, if one wishes to relocate, the land of metal and fire is the evil spirit.
"White entering Blaze means robbers come; Blaze entering White means robbers are destroyed. Bing is Bo, Geng is Ge; Ge means no passage, Bo brings rebellion and chaos." Heaven plate Bing added to Earth plate Direct Talisman Geng is Bo Ge, signifying breaking the store of rules and turmoil. But Jiashen Direct Talisman carrying Geng makes all ten-stem hours inauspicious. The classics say: The Liu Bing talisman is Bo; Mars fire burns the great house; if one's residence is elsewhere be calm and secure, hearing alone sounding mourning crying. Another says: If Geng is added to the day's or hour's stem, the only fit course is firm defense for security. Whenever encountering this ferocity, it is hard to measure—scrutinize carefully.
"Bing added to Tianyi is the Bo talisman; Tianyi added to Bing is the Flying Bo." Continuing from above, Tianyi refers to Jiashen with the Geng talent Being the Direct Talisman. Bing added to Earth plate Direct Talisman Geng is Bo Ge; Heaven plate Direct Talisman Geng added to Earth plate Liu Bing is Flying Bo, also called talisman Bo. In undertaking matters and using troops, it signifies a breakdown of organizational rules.
"When Geng is added to the day stem, it is the Lying Stem; when the day stem is added to Geng, it is the Flying Stem Ge." Liu Geng, representing Venus, added to the day stem is the Lying Stem Ge, disadvantageous to both host and guest. The classics state: If above the stem one encounters Venus coming, at the Lying Stem day one will inevitably suffer capture. When the day's stem is added to Liu Geng, this is the Flying Stem Ge, harming both host and guest. The classics state: If the stem goes in the contrary direction and arrives upon Geng, the Flying Stem Ge is inherently clear; for warfare neither side profits; the guest earns level with ease.
"Added one palace represents a battle in the field; in the same palace, war within the nation." Adding one palace refers to Geng being added to the day stem or the day stem being added to Geng, matters being unfavorable and field battles being fierce. Being in the same palace refers to the Baihu and direct talisman dwelling together in the same palace, where the outcome is war within the state, both host and guest suffer ill fortune. When the divination regards whether the person ispresent, the Ge belies his whereabouts: If it is Ge, the person has not been; if the same application verifies that arrival is asked, Ge also fetermines it must turn out false.
"When Geng is added to the Direct Talisman, the Tianyi Fu stems come; when the Direct Talisman is added to Geng, the Tianyi Dong of flying ensues." The classics state: Add Geng to the Direct Talisman supplies the concept of Fu Gong and determines intransitable loss: Even a sudden to-a-home comparison in combat obtains rewardlessness except stalemate, host and guest are simultaneously adverse; the bended tactics are best suited that of securing boundary alert: drill posts & vigil lamgs preen. "Geng plus Gui forms the Great Barrier, Geng plus Ji is the Punishment Barrier, unfavorable." The classic says: Six Geng plus Gui is the Great Barrier (Da Ge). When seeking people, nothing will be accomplished, and affairs are difficult to proceed. Encountering the Great Barrier, chariots break and horses are injured; people are separated and wealth is scattered. For example, in the lower bureau of the Autumn Equinox with Yin Dun, the cyclic stem Jia Zi arises in the Xun Palace of the Fourth Palace. On a Jia or Ji day at the Bing Yin hour, Six Geng is in the Kun Palace of the Second Palace. Using the Heavenly Assistant as the Direct Envoy and placing it on the Bing stem, the Heavenly Pneuma Star (Tian Rui) is obtained in the Qian Palace. Six Geng approaches the Gen Palace of the Eighth Palace over Gui, which is named the Great Barrier. The classic says: Six Geng plus Six Ji means a thousand li becomes a forced march; chariots and horses travel wearily over long distances, and troops halt midway. Encountering the Punishment Barrier when sending troops, chariots break and horses fall, the army stops mid-route, soldiers desert, and many misfortunes are attracted. For example, in the upper bureau of Great Cold with Yang Dun, the cyclic stem Jia Zi arises in the Zhen Palace of the Third Palace. On a Jia or Ji day at the Bing Yin hour, with the Heavenly Rush Direct Envoy placed on the Bing hour stem in the Kan Palace, the Heavenly Fowl Star (Tian Qin) with Six Geng is obtained, approaching the Fourth Palace on Ji. This is named Punishment Barrier.
"Geng plus Ren at the hour is the Upper Barrier; moreover, be wary of the year, month, day, and hour being belated." Six Geng plus Six Ren is the Upper Barrier (Shang Ge), unfavorable for dispatching troops. It is also said: Six Geng added to the Year Stem is the Year Barrier (Sui Ge), inauspicious. For example, in a Jia Zi year, Geng added to Jia Zi is this case. In the Xin Chou year, middle bureau of Beginning of Spring, with Yang Dun, Fifth Palace bearing Jia Zi, on a Jia or Ji day at the Gui You hour, the Gui stem in Kan, the Fifth Palace's center is the Heavenly Fowl Star lodged in Kun, thus the Heavenly Pneuma Star serves as the Direct Envoy, placed on the Kan First Palace. Regarding the Heavenly Pillar with Six Geng, its lower position on the Xin year stem in the Gen Eighth Palace, this is named Year Barrier. Six Geng added to the month beginning is the Month Barrier (Yue Ge). Take the Ji month stem as an example: In the upper bureau of Beginning of Spring, with Yang Dun, Gen Eighth Palace bearing Jia Zi, on a Jia or Ji day at the Ding Mao hour, Geng being in Kan and the Ding hour stem in the center lodged in Kun. Jia Zi is in Gen, with the Heavenly Assistant as Direct Envoy placed on Kun. If the Ji month stem is in Li and Peng carries Geng to Li over Ji, it is Geng added to the Ji month stem forming the Month Barrier. Six Geng added to the Day Stem is the Day Barrier (Ri Ge), inauspicious. Small Heat middle Qǐ s; specifically in the lower Yin Bureau, fifth cycle, on a Ji day at the Bing Yin hour, the Heavenly Fowl is the Direct Envoy placed on the Bing hour stem in Dui. Geng being in Zhen and Ji stem in Xun, Rui placed on Dui yields Chong, Geng added to Xun Ji — this is Six Geng on the Day Stem, forming the Day Barrier, not auspicious. Six Geng added to the hour stem for the current use is the Hour Barrier (Shi Ge). For example, in the upper bureau of Slight Snow, Zai was disposed as in Yang Er period, Kun Gong marked Jia Zi Di Fe if Han will and sun timing used whether Chén Fu qi Gong; the X dé position è r no obstacles? Yet the Ji Chou hour belongs to the Jia Shen sequence, with the Heavenly Assistant Direct Envoy placed on the Ji hour stem in Zhen: This is the Hour Barrier. When Geng is the Direct Envoy, the ten hours under its jurisdiction all become Hour Barriers — inauspicious.
"There are further special Barrier configurations; Six Geng must not be added to the Three Wonders. If troops are mobilized at such a time, lone horsemen with single wheels never return." Heavenly Geng plus earthly Ding and Bing, and adding to the Heavenly Brilliance and Scenery Gate, is Lower vanquishing Upper — whoever strikes first suffers misfortune. Heavenly Geng plus earthly Yi, and adding to the Heavenly Rush/Assistant and Wounding or Obstructing Gates, is Upper conquering Lower — whoever strikes first wins.
"Six Gui plus Ding makes the Snake writhe, Six Ding plus Gui makes the Sparrow dive into the river." The classic says: Six Gui plus Six Ding, twisted and deluded on the road, anxious and hard to advance; sit serenely and you shall be secure. Heavenly Gui plus earthly Ding forms the Pleasures no; this is termed the Coiling Python Writhe Barrier. To act at such a time is unfavorable. "Six Yi plus Xin is Dragon fleeing; Six Xin plus Yi is Tiger raging." Metal is the Great White — also called the White Tiger; Wood is the Green Dragon. Metal over Wood is the clash of dragon and tiger — not auspicious. The classic says: Six Yi added to Xin, metal and wood are incompatible; even the dragon spirit must retreat — comfort and leisure, refusing distressance. Yi is Wood, the Green Dragon, so Yi over Xin is Green Dragon Fleeing. For example: A formal descent P: On t due co; Actual timings out rule e ic right also per Y with two Cans du fr j th Q. Contemporary scholars typically study Qimen Dunjia from the following perspectives:
