Chapter 8 of 8
太清神鉴
Black moles on the human body are like forests growing on mountains and hillocks rising from the earth—manifestations of natural principle. Just as a mountain with fine quality grows good trees to display its beauty, and earth accumulated with filth grows malevolent soil to reveal its turbidity, so too does this principle apply to all things, and humans are no exception.
When a person possesses fine and virtuous qualities, they grow extraordinary moles to enhance their noble aura; when one has turbid and vile qualities, they grow malignant moles to signify their lowliness. It is said that Emperor Gaozu of Han, Liu Bang, had seventy-two black moles on his left thigh—clear evidence of an emperor's auspicious physiognomy. 🔥
General Principles of Fortune and Misfortune by Mole Location: Moles born in conspicuous places are mostly inauspicious; those in hidden places are mostly auspicious. Therefore, all moles on the face are largely unfavorable. Color Identification: Black moles that are black as ink or red as cinnabar are good. Those with a reddish tint indicate disputes and quarrels; those with a whitish tint indicate worries, calamities, and injury; those with a yellowish tint indicate forgetfulness and loss. Such is the method of discerning textures and colors.

Eye momentum entering the Heavenly Granary (outer brow tip), eyebrows clear and eyes long. The nose tip rounded and the Year-Longevity region (nose bridge) raised, the law lines (nasolabial folds) connecting through to the cheeks. Both brows passing beyond the ears and rising high, lip color vermilion with a square mouth shape. Chengjiang pointing toward the Earthly Corner (jaw), facial features upright with radiant spirit. The back raised as if clad in armor, brows clear and forehead square. This countenance indicates high office and fame spreading across the seas, enduring loyalty throughout the ages. ⛰️
Another saying: The eyebrow is the Flowery Canopy and the eye is the star; when the Flowery Canopy is high, the eyes are noble and spirited. When the earthly momentum faces heaven, with calm spirit and steady gait, one will surely become a high minister in youth.
Forehead broad and level, the Heavenly Court (upper forehead) not sunken, nose prominent and straight, the Earthly Pavilion (chin) wide and not pointed. Thin people have substantial shoulders and back, stout people have increasingly clear spirit. The Border Regions (temple edges) broad and the Earthly Pavilion square and round, the Dragon Bone and Tiger Bone complementing each other. Muscles smooth, brows delicate, light, and complete. Orchid Pavilion (left ala nasi) and Court Assistant (right ala nasi) distinct, ears adhering to the flesh, all in accord with the Five Mountains Facing the Center. Flesh rises beside the mouth, whether thin or stout, the Heavenly Granary not sunken. Bones prominent and muscles proportionate, countenance upright with luster. Voice, regardless of volume, clear and round without breaking. Shoulders raised with back and chest, upper body long and lower body short, hands and feet like dragon and tiger devouring one another. Eyes, regardless of size, spirit hidden within, with ample bags beneath containing the pupils. Spirit exalted and not scattered, substantial and not vulgar, sitting steady and walking lightly. This is the Two Administrations Pattern—the countenance of one who reaches the highest office.🌟
Thin people have broad foreheads, stout people have level foreheads. Countenance upright with smooth muscles, hair fine and sideburns clear. Eyes conceal spirit and gaze into the distance, the Heavenly Granary not sunken, nose prominent and straight, the Earthly Corner (chin) not pointed. Thin people have thick shoulders and back, stout people have increasingly clear spirit. Border regions broad and Earthly Pavilion broad, Dragon Bone and Tiger Bone complementing one another. Ruler and minister corresponding, ears raised with the Golden Cabinet level and even. Brows light and graceful, color upright and bright. This is the Two Commissions Pattern—the countenance of a Hanlin academician.
Thin people have upright countenances, stout people are not vulgar, spirit hidden and not revealed, nose straight and mouth square, shoulders and back full and prominent. Thin people do not have chilled shoulders and back, stout people have bone and flesh proportionate, and carry themselves with dignity. This is the Principal Gentleman Pattern—the countenance of a mid-to-senior ranked official.
Face and eyes conceal spirit and gaze into the distance, forehead square with prominent bones, the Golden Cabinet level and even. Thin people do not have chilled shoulders and back, stout people have bone and flesh proportionate, and carry themselves with noble dignity. This is the Staff Gentleman Pattern—the countenance of a regular official.
Ears raised toward the Heavenly Granary and gracefully long, eyebrows sparse with a square mouth. The back raised as if bearing a burden, chest thrust out with elevated bearing. Nose straight with rounded tip, countenance mature with radiant spirit. The Two Yang regions (cheek areas under the eyes) full and not sunken, cheekbones rising into the Heavenly Granary. Hands and feet soft and delicate, double silk ribbons and longevity cords long. This countenance indicates not only personal wealth and honor, but also flourishing descendants. 💰
Ears raised and long in momentum, eyebrows clear with a square mouth. Forehead square and clearly defined with Sun-Moon distinction, spirit light revealed beneath the eyes. Nose straight with rounded tip, cheeks square with long law lines. The back of the head rounded as a fine jade pillow, the Earthly Corner supporting Chengjiang. Ox neck and stork eyes, shoulders raised with deep well-furnace (eye sockets) covered. Skeletal frame robust and surpassing the highest longevity, the virtuous person's lifespan has no bounds. 🌱
Rushed eyebrows adjoining one another, thin lips with a pointed forehead. Nose low and crossed with bone, head small yet without shoulders. Exposed eyes indicate no longevity, a chilled physique does not reach old age. Sunken forehead with narrow border regions, the ear rim instead facing backward. Complexion tender pink with fire energy, voice scorched and hoarse—how could life be extended? Spirit light floating and exposed, entering the Yellow Springs (death) at thirty years of age. ⚠️
A small forehead indicates early stagnation; but with pure spirit and steadfast complexion, one may prevail. When qi (constitution) is cold yet spirit is distant, and bearing timid yet will is proud. When the forehead has luster, one finally achieves; and with complete cheeks, the level of rank will be high. Complexion may be yellow (unripe) and not yet developed in achievement, yet the Five Mountains already face the center in such harmony. Say not that there were many obstacles—when the time comes, one will naturally flower. Not only will office and rank be won, but wealth and goods will also come of their own accord. 🌄
A broad forehead indicates honor early in life; but if the spirit is clear yet the complexion does not hold, there follows change. When the nose is high yet lacks cheekbones, the flesh is thin and the voice scorched. Palms thick yet sinews exposed, navel deep yet ears do not face (point forward). Back may be as if carrying a burden, yet chest thin and not producing hair. The tender complexion may hold well in early years, but disaster will surely come beckoning at middle age. Listen well: those who are wealthy and honored in the present, will ultimately face their own decline and desolation. 📉
Eyes that reveal white, but as long as black-and-white are clearly separated, it is not considered exposure; a nose that shows its nostrils, but as long as the nose root is upright, it is not considered exposure; a mouth that shows teeth, but as long as the lips do not turn out, it is not considered exposure; ears that have reversed rims, but as long as they grow attached to the flesh, it is not considered exposure.
Again it is said: one exposure, two exposures, having a garment but no trousers (signifying poverty and distress). Exposed teeth with a prominent adam's apple—one's life is never their own. A heron resembling a stork is ultimately lacking. This must be assessed together with skeletal methods and physical temperament for a comprehensive judgment.
When the upper hall (head and shoulders) grows long, there is great auspiciousness and prosperity; when the middle hall (torso) grows long, one draws near to the ruler. When the lower hall (legs and feet) grows long, it is all vulgar—and traveling far away indicates a poor outcome. 🌊
Again it is said: when the body's Three Halls are proportionate and the upper and lower regions are evenly balanced, the person is of wealth and rank. If the upper is long and the lower short, with the back raised and the Three Mountains aligned, one holds the position of a minister of state. If the upper is short and the lower long, with a thin and fragile waist, one wanders all a lifetime, belonging to the poor and bitter class.
The forms of Five Greatnesses: the first is a great head, the second great eyes, the third a great belly, the fourth great ears, and the fifth a great mouth. The Five Greatses must be naturally formed without defects to indicate wealth and longevity. If the head is great but lacks the forehead angles, the eyes great but murky, the belly great but not rounded and pendulous, the ears great but without rims and helixes, the mouth great but with thin lips—then, on the contrary, poverty and lowliness follow.
Eyes great, yet murky and turbid; nose great, yet the bridge weak in its columns; mouth great, yet with both corners drooping; ears great, yet the ear holes shallow and the rims thin; head great, yet without bones filling it; voice great, yet the musical units diminished; face great, yet with skin lacking substance; body great, yet with uneven proportional milestones. When these eight greatnesses are not complemented accordingly, the person will instead be of poverty and lowliness.
The forms of Five Smallnesses: the first is a small head, the second small eyes, the third a small belly, the fourth small ears, and the fifth a small mouth. If these five, when properly formed without defects, are all small, this is a noble countenance. If three or four are small while one or two are great—it indicates poverty and lowliness. However, if the head is small yet has the forehead angles, the eyes small but clear and refined, the belly small but rounded and pendulous, the ears small yet possessing complete rims and helixes, the mouth small with straight lips and teeth—then, on the contrary, this marks a person of nobility.
Eyes small, yet elegant and long; nose small, yet with a straight bridge's columns; mouth small, yet formed of soft edges, sharp at the corners and square; ears small, yet tough and round; head small, yet level and square; voice small, yet exalted and pure; face small, yet clear-formed and turning toward the office path; body small, yet upright and undivided. When these eight smallnesses all correspond and delight the eye, the person is one of wealth and rank.

Red and rounded ears signify a woman of noble status; ears with well-defined contours indicate virtue and wealth. A thick left ear means the first child will be a son; a thick right ear means the first child will be a daughter. Lips with many fine lines indicate many children; a chin with a double fold signifies wealth and rank. Hair that is dark blue-black and as fine as silk threads marks a noblewoman; palms as red as silk floss bring the honor of a noble title. Fine bones with delicate flesh are signs of noble character; clean flesh and a fragrant body constitute an excellent physiognomy. A calm temperament and gentle breath bring good fortune and longevity; a composed spirit and serene countenance indicate chastity and virtue. One who smiles with closed eyes is harmonious and lovely; one who walks slowly and with care is gentle and beautiful. A black mole on the palm or sole of the foot is auspicious and benefits the husband; a spiral of hair in the armpit or between the breasts indicates the blessing of noble offspring.
A pointed head indicates low status; a narrow forehead indicates poverty and hardship. A cowlick at the forehead corner signifies remarriage and an ill death; a narrow forehead with hanging hair indicates poverty and calamity. Curly, tangled hair of a reddish-yellow color means poverty and lowliness; disheveled, dry, and coarse hair brings misfortune and evil.
Thick, bushy eyebrows growing in reverse harm the husband and bring danger in childbirth; thin, scattered eyebrows that meet in the middle indicate remarriage and harm to children. Prominent eyes with exposed whites harm the husband; deep-set eyes that steal glances indicate wickedness and destructive tendencies. Swollen flesh under the eyes brings death and calamity to children; red threads crossing the pupils indicate difficult childbirth. Triangular eyes signify cruelty and wickedness; large, flat, and full eyes indicate licentiousness and depravity. A shifting gaze that does not look straight ahead, with horizontal pupils, indicates adulterous intentions.
A sunken nose with exposed nostrils means poverty, low status, and harm to the husband. A bent nose tip signifies cruelty, poverty, and lowliness; a flat and narrow philtrum indicates childlessness. High and prominent temples at both ends indicate violence and brutality. A mouth shaped like one blowing a fire indicates widowhood. A mouth gathered like a pinch is a sign of poverty and low status; a wide and loose mouth means poverty and a triple marriage. Thin and pointed lips indicate a slanderous heart; lips as thin as a single stroke signify lowliness and a poisonous nature. Lips protruding like a dragon's mouth harm the husband and bring an ill death; lips that curl upward exposing the teeth bring harm and an early demise. Blue or black lips signify lewdness, filth, and low status.
Ears that protrude and hang downward harm the husband and children. Small, blackish eyes indicate a short life and poverty. Horizontal cheekbones on the face signify a harmful nature that ruins the husband; a face dotted with freckles the size of flies brings loneliness, poverty, and harm to children. A sunken face with a narrow forehead indicates poverty and lowliness; a pointed forehead with wide nostrils is a mark of lowliness and suffering. A thin neck like that of a horse brings harm to the husband; a long neck with a prominent Adam's apple brings self-inflicted misfortune.
Short hands with blunt fingers indicate lowliness, poverty, and hardship; wide feet with thin soles bring cold, poverty, and ceaseless wandering. A body covered in coarse hair signifies a stubborn nature and loneliness; coarse hair growing under both armpits indicates low status and servitude. Coarse flesh with hard bones means a lifetime of cold and poverty; thin skin with a foul odor means a hundred years of destitution.
A loud and masculine voice harms the husband and is inauspicious; a small and broken voice brings loss of wealth and many setbacks. One who covers her mouth when laughing has adulterous inclinations; one who rocks her knees while sitting is wanton and dissolute. A small and narrow mouth brings no children and no wealth; small and pale teeth bring barrenness and loss of noble rank. A protruding chest and prominent buttocks mean a lifetime of servitude as a maidservant; a bent waist and a goiter on the neck indicate a hundred years of loneliness and hardship. Walking like a galloping horse harms the husband and marks low status; walking with a jumping gait brings ceaseless toil and poverty.
Red and dry cheeks indicate a violent temperament that harms others; turbid breath and a clouded spirit bring many misfortunes and calamities. Whorl patterns under the eyes kill the husband and injure the children; vertical lines under the eyes mark widowhood and childlessness. Slanted lines above the eyes mean elopement after marriage; lines at the corners of the nose indicate harm to the husband. A hooked line there signals licentiousness, thievery, and harm to the husband; a vertical line there indicates an evil death. A horizontal line across the philtrum signifies harm causing the husband's death.
As for the remaining characteristics for women, there is no great difference from the physiognomy of men. One need only apply the foregoing principles for men one by one to determine whether fate brings honor or lowliness, good fortune or calamity.
A straight nose like a suspended gallbladder, square lips and a mouth like a bud. Sparse eyebrows with beautiful eyes, white teeth and square cheeks. Ears that stand upright with soft hanging lobes, a harmonious spirit and a pleasant countenance. A square forehead defined by sun and moon, a fair body with moist and fragrant skin. Sitting steady as a mountain standing, a solemn demeanor unbowed. No need to speak of her own honor, her descendants will surely be extraordinary.💎
A narrow forehead with high eyebrows, lips turned up and mouth misaligned. A light face and iron-hard body, thin frame lacking authority. Small ears with shallow lobes, curly hair and a low nose bridge. A weeping countenance foretells remarriage, a ghostly face no sons. Licentious gleams flash from her eyes, jealousy and deceit ever present. No need to speak of present suffering, in old age she will be even more desolate.
A woman whose flesh beneath her eyes is always scant, without killing three husbands she will kill two. When she meets others she keeps covering her smile, fond of pursuing travelers, fleeing at midnight.
The core concept of this volume is grounded in the holistic physiognomic principle of form and spirit supplementing each other, and bone and flesh finding proportion. Volume Six systematically elaborates on three levels:
First, the symbolic system of black moles. Black moles are compared to "trees growing on mountains, mounds arising from the earth," treating the human body as a miniature geographical system. The position, color, and visibility of moles together form a set of signs for interpreting fortune. The core logic is: birth marks in exposed places tend toward misfortune, hidden places toward fortune — this actually reflects the ancient valuation of "concealment" versus "revealing." The anecdote of Han Emperor Gaozu having "seventy-two black moles on his left thigh" established the theoretical foundation by which moles could become auspicious marks of imperial destiny, but on the condition that they are in hidden locations (the thigh rather than the face) and with pure coloring (black as ink, red as cinnabar).
Second, the systematic classification of male facial patterns. From "Noble Patterns of Men" through "Patterns Carrying the Killing Element," this forms a complete hierarchical system of male physiognomy. Two-Mansion patterns (the level of Grand Councillor) → Two-Secretariat patterns (the level of the Hanlin Academy) → Chief Clerk patterns → Junior Official patterns, arranged in a descending scale of official position. Each pattern emphasizes the principle of proportionate bone and flesh, aligned spirit and color. "Manly Wealth" and "Long Life and Official Emolument" correspond independently to wealth and longevity. The patterns "First lowly, then noble" and "First rich, then poor" introduce a temporal dimension, demonstrating that facial patterns are not static but contain the dynamic trajectory of a person's fortune.
Third, the yin-yang framework of female physiognomy. Volume Six opens with "One yin, one yang—the way must not be disordered," establishing the fundamental distinction between male and female physiognomy. Males receive pure yang essence, with hard bodies and vigorous functions; females receive pure yin form, with soft bodies and gentle vitality. The core evaluative criteria for female physiognomy are gentleness, chastity, and virtue. Among the "Nine Virtues," such standards as "voice low and round," "laughing without showing eyes," and "walking with slow deliberate steps" all point toward reticence, subtlety, and gentleness as required qualities. Among the "Nine Vices," "masculine voice," "serpent's walk and sparrow's step," and "protruding eyes with all four whites visible" are considered external signs of violent, lascivious, and treacherous nature.
From "Character Is Reflected in Appearance" to the Cognitive Science of "First Impressions"
The masses of specific descriptions in Volume Six need not be taken literally by modern readers. Nevertheless, the observational logic underlying them engages with modern psychology of facial perception. For example, "the eyes conceal spirit and reach far within" and "the spirit exalts and is not disordered" correspond to what modern research calls the stability and concentration of gaze, which indeed transmits trustworthiness signals in interpersonal relations. Similarly, "sitting stable while walking light" and "carriage self-respecting possession" closely parallel the concepts of "postural openness" and "behavioral confidence" in body-language research. When the ancients fixed observed behavioral patterns into physiognomic standards, they were operating a system of inference about personality based on experiential evidence.
The Modern Significance of "Proportionality"
Volume Six repeatedly emphasizes distinctions of "proportionality" and "disharmony" —the five indications must be "developed without defects" to be auspicious; the eight contra-indications unless "uniform harmonized," otherwise poverty follows. This principle converts into holistic consistency in modern contexts: one's aura and charisma lie not in promouncing one feature, but in harmony and unity of the whole. This interestingly parallels the “facial symmetry” and “body proportions” principles of modern aesthetic research.
Critical Examination of Female Physiognomy
The section on female physiognomy reflects a powerful sexual-role rigidity inclination. Judgments such as "harms the husband," "destroys children," or "changes marriage" bind women's worth entirely to marriage and childbearing, artifacts of specific historical circumstances. From a modern perspective, descriptions like "clear and alluring spirit," "gentle nature and soft breath" are actually naive identifications of emotional stability and interpersonal affability. They can be dissociated from sexual schema and understood as descriptions of a healthy psyche, such that “loud voice” or “violent disposition“ as cues to depravity collapse utterly in modern era; rather, competitiveness and drive derived of females constitute valued traits within public organization domain via capitalist employer value rationale.
The practical worth of this volume is not in consulting it as a way to judge the destiny of others, but in offering a framework for self-observation and self-improvement:
Management of spirit and appearance: Standards like "spirit hidden yet manifest" and "complexion correct and clear" remind us in the workplace and in relationships, stability of emotional display and fitness of spiritually luminous persona an indispensable soft asset. They are largely training with practice as any embodiment of visceral persona.
Posture and carriage cultivation: "Sitting steady, moving light" added as “self-respect,” in ancientness quality indices provide effective base of professional imaging today irrespective. Proper proprioceptive and orthopostic posture not merely shows others, but also informs our internal processes—as recent advances of “embodied cognition” clearly certify.
Long-horizon thinking: The key insight between the times dynamics dimensions “lowly-wealth” or “rich-poore” acknowledges variable evolution of human capacities toward challenge of ongoing self-mortification. Rare pure vitality quothe core ("clear spirit" vs “ring brittle face-body”) ideally adapt evaluator rigor identifying permanence across unstable surfaces.
Diagnostic-manager trifunction loop: Transforming faces observation at system constraints hypothetic instant —predicted likelihood in nuanced positions (good executive funnel assignments) tests, reboots performance in practice cycles. Old habits then become mock prophecy framework through dynamic iteration given task-success attribution, reconciling primal lineage but retaining actual proof fidelity upon right task utilization.
Conceal versus Exposed: Doctrine of the Human as Microcosm and Governance
The opening of mole-section adopts of analogies figure reminiscent organic-landscape imagerial geography: human visible exterior correlated macro-hierarchy bodily presence wholecosmic social & self-underwritten coherence. Combined with script tags multiple levels epitomizing harmonic dynamic frameworks anchored up therewith earlier primordial tract pattern stable—this convention ascends sense-perceptions way founded to justify dignity toping analog from Huang-Di Nei-Jing with exact preceding precedent within ideal shared architect identity —shows through via unified mirror-land macro-logic relation codifier: aesthetic metaphysics meets corporate body project.

Gender Contrast as Yin-Yang Dialue
Mass VI indeed opens by foundation and class assigned ethics—statement "One Yin, one Yang, Way inviolate"...But relative archetypes revolve beyond dogmatic pigeon-holing: dynamic principles argue coherence macro evolution above gross rank-chaining.
