Examining the universal laws of all things between heaven and earth: one should seek the condensation of stillness within movement, and seek the vitality of movement within stillness; what is most taboo is when the still becomes increasingly rigid and the moving becomes increasingly agitated, with the two never intersecting.
As the ancients said: "Water is inherently dynamic, yet seeks its stillness; mountains are inherently still, yet seek their dynamism." This is indeed a penetrating observation that grasps the underlying principle.
Mountains take stillness as their norm, yet if they are completely unmoving with no undulating momentum whatsoever, this is called "without movement"; only when stillness contains movement—winding and undulating—can a dragon vein 🐉 be formed. Water takes movement as its norm, yet if it simply rushes forth with no intention of pooling or halting, this is called "without stillness"; only when movement contains stillness—curving and embracing, pooling and accumulating—can a point of formation ⛰ be accomplished.
Therefore, mountains that truly become dragons invariably leap and dance with vigor, like a dragon soaring through the heavens—movement and stillness mutually generating each other; waters that truly form points of confluence invariably curve and meander gracefully, like a sash encircling a jade waist—the quality of stillness manifesting itself. If mountain forms are rigid and stiff, slanting and reclining sideways, violently charging without feeling, pulling and shooting without regard; and if water momentum is likewise marked by rapid straight rushing and scattered dissipation with nothing gathered—then this is "movement never departing from movement, stillness never departing from stillness"—the moving eternally moves, the still eternally remains still, and mountains and waters cannot achieve intercourse and fusion, naturally making it difficult for a point to form.
Note from a later student: What is said here indeed shows insight. However, between movement and stillness, they are originally a pair of mutually circulating and transforming forces. Mountains also have moments when extreme movement turns to stillness, and waters also have changes when extreme stillness turns to movement—one cannot fixate on a single aspect to make determinations. The key lies in the student's ability to achieve comprehensive understanding and apply it flexibly—only then is the subtlety obtained.
Another annotation: "Movement" can be understood as the state of struggle and transformation in things; "stillness" is the state of unity and consolidation. The mutual circulation of struggle—unity—struggle indeed touches upon fundamental principle. However, this comparison in the original text is too strained, and the remainder of what is discussed likewise fails to fully accord with reality. As for the distinction between "dragon" and "mountain"—what exactly it consists of still requires further clarification.
The distinction between dragon and mountain: A mountain is a static topographical entity—the "body"; a dragon is the dynamic vital energy and veining direction concealed within the mountain—the "function." There may be mountains without dragons, but where there is a dragon, there must be a mountain. If a mountain lacks undulation and winding, lacks incoming vein and outgoing momentum, it is a "dead mountain"; only one that generates movement within stillness, stretches on without end, and leaps and dances with vigor may be called a "living dragon." In brief: the mountain is the form, the dragon is the momentum; the mountain is the substance, the dragon is the vital energy.
