The Chapter on Division and Convergence discusses the "emergence" and "disappearance" of the dragon vein—that is, where the mountain range originates and where it terminates. 🌊
Mountain ranges do not arise out of nothing or appear abruptly. When the dragon vein travels forth, there must be identifiable natural momentum: on both sides there are dividing waters (diverging waterways) that guide the direction of the vital energy; where the vital energy comes to rest, there must be its destination, and thus converging waters (merging currents) serve as its boundary, halting the vital energy at that point.
Guo Pu once said: The great earth conceals auspicious energy, which manifests as it rises with the earthen veins; branch dragons possess halting energy, which travels alongside the currents (here "follow" refers to traveling in tandem, not ceasing). He also said: Where branch veins begin, the vital energy is set in motion; where branch veins end, the vital energy gathers and accumulates. This is the fundamental basis upon which the ancients discoursed on the origins and courses of vital energy. ⛰️
Energy travels as the earthen vein rises, therefore a traveling dragon vein must have a ridgeline; energy follows alongside the currents, therefore both flanks of the vein must have waterways. Vital energy arises at the start of the branch vein, hence there are traces of dividing veins at the upper end; vital energy accumulates at the terminus of the branch vein, hence there is the closure of converging water at the lower end.
If there is only converging water but no dividing water, this indicates the dragon vein's approach is not genuine—because internally there is no vital energy to receive. If there is only dividing water but no converging water, this indicates the dragon vein's terminus is not certain—because externally there is no hall energy to gather. Only when both division and convergence are present is there approach and termination, emergence and disappearance, rendering the fusion and formation of the dragon point beyond doubt—this is what is called "land of complete energy."
Furthermore, division and convergence may be distinguished as major and minor. True fusion sites often exhibit three divisions and three convergences: the first division-convergence occurs at the front and back of the point-star; the second at the junction of the main dragon and the Dragon-Tiger sands; the third at the grand assembly of waterways at the ancestral dragon. 🏔️
Minor convergences form the lesser open courtyard, while major convergences form the greater open courtyard. Convergences within the Dragon-Tiger sands are called inner open courtyards, while those beyond are called outer open courtyards. These layers each have their own domain and must not be confused—this is something practitioners must clearly understand.

What is "division"? What is "convergence"? Perhaps no one truly understanding these terms.
It is said "there are dividing waters to guide the course"—yet in natural topography, tributaries merge into larger rivers, but it is rare—even unheard of—for one great river to split into several smaller rivers. Could "dividing waters" refer to two tributaries flanking a mountain range, with the tributaries converging into a river at the mountain's end? If so, the tributaries constitute "division," and the merging into a single river constitutes "convergence."
But how then should we interpret the subsequent statement about "having convergence without division"? Moreover, if there is water flowing between the Dragon-Tiger sands and the point-site, then such Dragon-Tiger sands can no longer serve their function of "protecting the point precinct"—with water separating them, how can the Dragon and Tiger guard the point site?
The core of this chapter lies in using the "division and convergence of water" to define the "emergence and disappearance of the dragon." In traditional feng shui theory, mountain and water form a yin-yang opposition: mountains are passive, water is active; mountains are yin, water is yang. Observing the "division" and "convergence" of watercourses is essentially observing the "movement" and "rest" of the dragon vein. Dividing water marks the approach path of the dragon vein and the "source" where vital energy begins; converging water marks the destination of the dragon vein and the "terminus" where vital energy accumulates. The gullies and streams on both flanks of a mountain range often spread out in a fan-shaped pattern near the mountain's origin (dividing waters) and typically merge into the main current at the mountain's terminus (converging waters). The contradiction of water between Dragon-Tiger and the point site: Traditional feng shui emphasizes that the Dragon-Tiger "protect the point precinct, " requiring the Dragon-Tiger sands to closely embrace the site without intervening waterways. If water exists between the Dragon-Tiger and the point, on one hand it may form an "inner courtyard water" pattern, but on the other hand it may compromise the direct protective relationship of the Dragon-Tiger toward the point, making the second division-convergence at "the junction of Dragon-Tiger" difficult to establish. Indeed, an internal tension exists within the theory.

This critical spirit itself precisely reminds us—ancient observations had their empirical basis, but also the limitations of their conceptual tools. Modern practitioners should neither wholly adopt nor lightly dismiss tradition; rather, they should examine tradition with the dialectical attitude of "division and convergence"—discerning what belongs to empirical observation, synthesizing what belongs to theoretical construction, and finding the proper balance between division and convergence.
