Hexagram Xian: Smooth progress. It is favorable to uphold what is right and true. Marrying a woman brings good fortune. The Commentary on the Judgement points out: Xian means "mutual influence" or "resonance." In the hexagram, the gentle Lake trigram is above and the firm Mountain trigram is below — yin and yang energies respond to and interpenetrate each other. The lower trigram Mountain signifies stillness, while the upper trigram Lake signifies joy — symbolizing a heart that is tranquil within and harmonious without. It also depicts a man humbling himself to be beneath a woman (Mountain as the youngest son below, Lake as the youngest daughter above). Hence: smooth progress, favorable for upholding rightness, and auspicious for marriage. When heaven and earth interact in sympathetic resonance, the myriad things are nurtured and transformed and come to life 🌱. Initial Six: The influence begins at the big toe of the foot. The Image Commentary says: Being influenced at the toe shows the will beginning to stir and move outward.
Six in the Second Place: Influence reaches the calves. Rushing forward rashly brings misfortune. Remaining quiet and tranquil brings good fortune. The Image Commentary says: Although there is danger and ill fortune, stillness and patience may yet bring safety — yielding to the right timing prevents disaster.
Nine in the Third Place: Influence reaches the thighs. Stubbornly clinging to others and following them — moving forward brings regret and chagrin. The Image Commentary says: Being influenced at the thigh, when even its proper station implies unease; for the will is set on following others, the integrity one holds is too low and petty.
Nine in the Fourth Place: Persevering in what is right brings good fortune; remorse dissolves. With a truly restless, anxious heart jumping back and forth—wavering like this—friends will follow the thought in your mind and mirror your distractions. The Image Commentary says: What is upheld with persistence brings fortune and thus regret dissolves, for one has not yet been harmed by the influences they take in. Being restless and unsettled indicates the realm of one's influence/awareness is not yet broadened enough.
Nine in the Fifth Place: Influence reaches the back/spine (mei) of the flesh — it no longer feels anything. There is no occasion for remorse because of this numbness. The Image Commentary says: Being impressed at the back of the spine, clinging/sensing nothing more—shows the will dwelling on something extremely insignificant yet binding..
