Heng (Duration) — The Way of lasting endurance. Smooth progress, no misfortune, favorable to uphold what is right and correct. Favorable to have somewhere to go. 🌱
The Commentary (Tuan Zhuan) says: Heng means duration. The firm and strong resides above while the gentle and compliant dwells below; thunder and wind work in mutual cooperation; yielding follows movement; both the firm and the yielding lines respond to one another—this is what Duration signifies. Heng is smooth in progress and free of misfortune, favorable for upholding correctness, because one enduringly practices the correct Way. The natural law of Heaven and Earth persists without cease. It is favorable to have somewhere to go, for endings are always followed by new beginnings. The sun and moon rely on the celestial order and thus shine with constancy; the four seasons alternate and evolve, thereby perpetually bringing all things to completion; sages uphold their Way with constancy, and the whole world is transformed and nurtured accordingly. Observe what one enduringly upholds, and the true conditions of Heaven, Earth, and all beings become visibly clear.
The Image (Xiang Zhuan) says: Thunder and wind mutually agitate and respond to each other—this is the image of Heng. The noble person thereby establishes their standing and conducts their affairs without deviating from steadfast principles.
Initial Six: Seeking too deeply at the very outset of a constant matter — even correctness brings danger; nothing is gained. Image: The "excessively deep" misfortune of Initial Six comes from demanding exhaustive depth at the very start.
Nine in the Second: Regret disappears. Image: "Regret disappears" in Nine in the Second means one can enduringly maintain the central path.
Nine in the Third: If one cannot maintain their virtue constantly, disgrace may follow; even correctness invites regret. Image: Failing to maintain virtue constancy leaves one with no place to stand.
Nine in the Fourth: The hunt yields no prey. Image: Dwelling long in an unsuitable position — how can one obtain anything?
Six in the Fifth: Mainting one's virtue enduringly, upholding correctness — the woman achieves good fortune; the man encounters danger. Image: The woman is correct and fortunate because she follows one lord for life. The man must make decisive judgments; if he, like a woman, merely yields blindly, misfortune ensues.
Top Six: Confusion about the Way of Duration itself — danger. Image: Confusion about one's constant duty in a high station leads to never fulfilling any result.
