Overall Paraphrased Translation
Zhang Guolao’s innate destiny mantra emphasizes that the art of fate calculation requires meticulous study 🌿. If scholars can thoroughly understand a few core principles, they can comprehend the rest with ease.
First, observe the Lord of the Fate Degree (the star governing destiny), then examine the Body Star (the celestial body symbolizing the individual). The twenty-eight lunar mansions (such as Jiao, Kang, etc., totaling 365 degrees) serve as the foundation, while the eleven luminaries (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, Sun, Moon, and the four remnants: Qi, Bo, Luo, Ji) act as the functional deities.
The Sun 🌞 and Moon 🌙 are the most revered. If the Career Star (representing profession) and Fortune Star (representing blessings) are strong, one will inevitably achieve nobility and prosperity. Nobility or baseness is determined by astrological patterns (e.g., the "Ruler-Minister Celebration" pattern signifies nobility, while the "Heaven-Earth Blockage" pattern indicates baseness). Wealth or poverty depends on the Wealth Star and Field Star (wealth is attained if the Wealth Star is well-positioned, while poverty results if it is weakened).
Wisdom or foolishness is determined by the elevation of stars (e.g., Wood and Qi protecting the body signify wisdom, while mixed Earth and Bo indicate foolishness). Longevity or premature death is based on the strength of vital energy (longevity is assured if the Life Source encounters favorable conditions, while premature death occurs if the ruling star loses its place). This is the essence of the innate destiny method, with detailed mantras explained further in the text.
For example, if the Fate Palace is in the Yin palace (governed by the Tail Fire Tiger or Winnower Water Leopard mansion), Fire or Water serves as the ruling star. If Jupiter and Mercury enter the Chariot mansion together, the Moon is in the Well mansion, the Sun is in the Hairy Head mansion, Mars is in the Tail mansion, and the individual is born at night, this indicates a first-rank noble destiny 🔥: such a person will have a thunderous voice, a tall stature, a strong personality, and authority, born in a landscape of mountains and rivers, and is no ordinary individual.
A secondary destiny occurs when Mars faces the Sun, and Mercury assists the Moon, indicating a second-rank destiny. If Mars enters the Bond or Harvester mansion, Metal and Water meet in the Wings or Chariot mansion, the Taiyi (Bo star) embraces the Moon, the Fate Lord is favored, the Body Lord is well-placed, and blessings and prosperity are not contradicted, this indicates a destiny ranging from second to fifth rank.
If Mars and Saturn are in the Ox mansion, Venus faces the Dipper mansion, Mercury and the Sun reside in the Hài palace (Heavenly Gate), the Moon enters the Taurus mansion, Jupiter approaches the Winnower or Wall mansion, Metal and Water face the Sun, or nocturnal Mars meets the Sun in the Emptiness mansion, this indicates a destiny ranging from fifth rank to miscellaneous roles.
If the Fate Degree Lord or Career Lord is harmed, but the Field and Wealth Stars are supported by favorable stars, this can result in a destiny of great wealth. If the Body and Fate are slightly aligned, and Water and Wood enter the Fate Palace, this may indicate a destiny in medicine or divination. If the Luo star (Rahu) enters the Fate Palace, and punitive stars are elevated, this signifies a military destiny. If the Qi star (Purple Qi) illuminates the Body and Fate, but the spouse, children, career, and blessings are all contradicted, or the Fate Lord enters an unfavorable palace, this indicates a destiny as a monk or Taoist priest. If the Body resides in the Migration Palace, and the Lord occupies the sixth or third palace, this suggests an adopted destiny. If the ruling star is ahead and malefic stars follow, the Body and Fate are afflicted, and the eighth palace contains evil stars, this indicates a disabled destiny.
For female destinies, the Body Star must be clear and bright, the Spouse Star prominent, and the Children Star elegant, with Water and Fire well-positioned, to indicate a destiny of wealth and nobility. If the Body Star is weak, the Children Star is debilitated, the Spouse Palace is cluttered, and Metal and Bo enter the Fate Palace, this suggests a destiny as a courtesan. If Qi illuminates the Body and Fate, and the Spouse and Children Stars are afflicted, this indicates a destiny as a nun or teacher. If the Body enters the Migration Palace, and Bo, Luo, and Ji guard the Fate Palace while the Spouse Palace is restrained, this suggests a destiny of multiple marriages without rest.
This is the innate mystical method. Scholars must integrate and master it, analyzing destiny as clearly as a mirror reflecting form, with unparalleled precision ⚡.
Stellar destiny studies focus on star positions and interactions as the core, using the distribution of the twenty-eight mansions and eleven luminaries to determine an individual’s fate trajectory. It emphasizes "revering the Sun and Moon, valuing career and blessings," with nobility, baseness, wealth, poverty, longevity, and premature death all determined by stellar combinations, reflecting the philosophy of cosmic-human resonance.
Is destiny predetermined by stars, or can it be altered by human effort? Stellar destiny studies imply the idea that "cosmic fate sets the framework, but human effort can optimize outcomes"—through practices such as self-cultivation, career choices, and environmental selection. This resonates with the modern theory of "gene-environment interaction," advocating proactive adaptation rather than passive acceptance.
