This chapter, through a dialogue between Li Cheng and the Old Immortal, delves into key concepts of stellar astrology, including the roles of auspicious and inauspicious stars such as the Dipper Handle (斗杓), Hexagram Qi (卦气), Tang Symbol (唐符), National Seal (国印), Celestial Hero (天雄), and Earthly Feminine (地雌). It explores how these elements determine a person’s wealth, status, life, death, fortune, and misfortune. The content covers case analyses, distinctions between monastic and lay destinies, and the influence of planetary cycles, emphasizing the complexity and practicality of the stellar destiny system. In a modern interpretation, we discard superstitious elements to focus on environmental adaptation, decision-making logic, and cultural heritage.
The Old Immortal said: The core of destiny analysis lies in the Dipper Handle (the handle of the Big Dipper), Hexagram Qi (the residual energy of heavenly fortune), Tang Symbol (the year-ruling star), National Seal (the imperial seal), Celestial Hero (symbol of the Qian hexagram), and Earthly Feminine (symbol of the Kun hexagram). These stars govern nobility, but most世俗 practitioners are unaware of them. For example:
These auspicious stars can only be fully understood by masters of profound knowledge, not ordinary practitioners.
Li Cheng asked: I already know how to determine nobility and baseness using the innate method, but how can we predict misfortunes like drowning, death in battle, snake bites, tiger attacks, hanging, or lightning strikes?
Answer: One must examine inauspicious stars such as 劫煞 (calamity煞), 阳刃 (yang blade), 的煞 (dire煞), 贯索 (binding cord), 浮沉 (floating and sinking), 天厄 (celestial adversity), and 桃花 (peach blossom). For example:
The eight kills refer to the body and life palace.
Li Cheng asked: How can we determine the fluctuations in a woman’s destiny?
The Immortal answered: Those with a virtuous福德宫 (virtue palace), a clear body palace, and a husband palace carrying禄 (fortune) may become empresses 👑; those with slightly偏 (biased) appearance may become noble wives; those with the life ruler and children ruler entering the husband palace may have destinies involving marriage into the wife’s family 💍.
Li Cheng asked: Monks and Taoists both carry孤寡 (loneliness and widowhood), how can we distinguish them?
The Immortal answered: The Jade Case Classic says: For monks, Qi illuminates the body palace, and fire resides in the life position 🔥; for Taoists, the life ruler resides in idle extremity, and water enters the life palace 🌊. Both carry孤辰 (lonely star) and寡宿 (widow star), but the distinction lies in the division of water and fire 🙏.
Li Cheng said: This secret is unheard of; I wish to fully learn the mysteries of prosperity, adversity, longevity, and premature death through planetary cycles.
The Immortal instructed: This secret must not be lightly transmitted; remember it carefully 🔒.
In ancient times, great immortals observed destinies and discussed stars based on the mechanisms of cosmic creation, hence the term “heavenly destiny” 🌌. They observed celestial phenomena at night and discussed the five elements by day, considering celestial longitude and terrestrial latitude夹拱 (clamping and arching) as noble patterns ✨.
Example 1: A person born in the year甲寅, with destiny established in the亥 palace, wood star in Zi, water star in戌, destiny entangled in the Bi constellation sitting at the celestial gate, should have been noble due to longitude and latitude clamping, but became a merchant.
The Old Immortal explained with a laugh: This destiny sits on劫煞 (calamity煞), with water漂白羊 (floating white sheep in Zi palace) and wood入齐瓶 (entering齐 bottle in戌 palace). Water harms wealth, wood damages virtue; the Zi and Chou palaces belong to earth, hence damaging fortune. How can one be wealthy and noble with a broken pattern? If water were in Zi and wood in戌, it would be different 🔄.
Example 2: A person born in the year辛卯, with destiny established in the卯 palace, wood in Yin, metal in辰. Metal represents celestial longitude, wood represents terrestrial latitude; stars entering their bounds and clamping form the superior pattern 🔼; no conflict or clash forms the middle pattern ➡️; broken patterns and loss of bounds form the inferior pattern 🔽; encountering the Dipper Handle pointing to break is even worse. The principles of longitude and latitude can be applied to the four remnants 🌠.
Example 3: A person born in the year戊寅, first month, Si hour, with destiny sitting in the酉 palace at the center of the Dipper Handle, yet remained a poor scholar without wealth or nobility.
Guo Lao said: The destiny resides in a defeated land, with terrestrial depletion and破碎 (breakage) guarding it. Obtaining the Dipper Handle only indicates intelligence and literary goodness, without wealth, nobility, or scholarly success 📚.
Example 4: A person born in the year甲戌, tenth month, Chou hour, with destiny established in the Yin palace encountering the Dipper Handle,兼禄动长生得局 (combined with禄 movement,长生 obtaining the pattern), forms the superior noble destiny 🎯; without noble禄 but obtaining生旺官 (growth and flourishing official) forms the middle pattern; with劫刃耗的相刑 (calamity blade, depletion, dire, mutual punishment) forms the inferior pattern.
Hexagram Qi in the body and life palace originally indicates glory, but if劫刃雄雌拱夹 (calamity blade, hero-feminine clamping) or天耗地耗守照 (celestial and terrestrial depletions guarding) occur, it may reduce one to a lowly status, similar to the principle of the Dipper Handle 📉.
Tang Symbol and National Seal guarding the destiny: A person born in the year丙辰, with destiny in Chou, moon in Zi, Tang Symbol in the body, National Seal in the destiny, but due to the甲寅 cycle’s Zi and Chou emptiness (earth emptiness causes collapse), lacks wealth and nobility 🏚️.
阴注阳受 (yin infusion yang reception) guarding the body and destiny can turn misfortune into fortune, but a person born in the year庚辰, fourth month, Mao hour, with destiny established in酉, violating羊刃咸池 (yang blade and peach blossom), and the甲戌 cycle lacking Shen and You, may perish due to wine and lust 🍷.
Celestial Horse and Terrestrial Courier auspiciousness and inauspiciousness: Returning to bounds and entering the temple遇贵禄长生 (encountering noble禄长生) indicates auspiciousness 🎉; encountering emptiness, celestial and terrestrial depletions, death, extinction, conflict, or battle indicates inauspiciousness ❌.
Heaven, Earth, and Human三元 (three origins): Meeting official and virtue brings nobility; meeting field and wealth brings riches; meeting the destiny degree ruler brings extraordinariness. Detailed analysis of the ten stems’ changing radiance and entering bounds升殿 (ascending the hall) is required 🔍.
Longevity star illuminating the native home: Residing in the life position临近禄贵生旺 (near禄 nobility growth and flourishing) is auspicious, especially if unadulterated 🌿.
Facing the sun without nobility: A strong pattern兼官禄朝阳 (combined with official禄 facing the sun) brings utmost nobility; a weak destiny元 (origin) yields no benefit even if facing the sun 📉.
