The Fu Yin (伏吟) hexagram symbolizes a state of melancholy and lamentation. When the inner trigram exhibits Fu Yin, it indicates internal troubles; when the outer trigram shows Fu Yin, it suggests external difficulties. Regardless of the query, outcomes are unlikely to be satisfactory, with actions feeling stagnant and filled with regret and sighs. 🌫
Query: Inquiring about the arrival of troops and where the family should seek refuge.
Interpretation: The hexagram shows Fu Yin both internally and externally, indicating unresolved melancholy. Fortunately, the Shi Yao (世爻, representing the querent) is Wu Fire (午火) and a子孙 (offspring symbol), while the Ying Yao (应爻, representing parents) is Zi Water (子水) and a父母 (parent symbol). The月建 (monthly influence) supports the Ying Yao, and the日辰 (daily influence) supports the Shi Yao. Both Yao are tranquil, suggesting safety for both parents and the querent. However, the Yin Wood (寅木)兄弟 (sibling symbol) is in Fu Yin and月破 (monthly broken), indicating potential disaster for siblings. The querent asked: "My parents are at a relative’s home in the west. Will they be safe?" Answer: "The west belongs to Metal, which can生扶 (support) the parent symbol. Absolutely no worries! You should seek refuge in the east, as east belongs to Wood, which can生火 (support the Fire Shi Yao). Siblings, spouses, and servants can accompany you. With the offspring symbol holding the Shi Yao, safety is assured." Later feedback: The family went east and remained safe, but the younger brother, worried about the parents, went to check on them and was harmed on the way.
Modern Application Suggestions: In crisis situations (e.g., natural disasters or conflicts), Fu Yin indicates stagnation and anxiety. When making decisions:
Query: Inquiring about the safety of a father serving in an official post.
Interpretation: Fu Yin in the outer trigram indicates inevitable troubles at the post, leading to unavoidable lamentation. The querent asked: "Will the local uprising affect him?" Answer: "Fu Yin suggests a desire to return but inability to do so. The situation is calm before the year-end, but changes will occur in Wu Yue (午月, May-June), with reinstatement or reassignment. Dismissal in Chen Yue (辰月, March-April) is due to the Xu父爻 (parent symbol) being in Fu Yin and monthly broken; reinstatement in Wu Yue is due to the daily官星 (official star) supporting the Yong Shen, gaining strength at the right time."
Modern Application Suggestions: For queries about workplace safety or relatives abroad, Fu Yin hints at temporary困境 (predicaments):
Query: Inquiring about the safety of a group while living abroad.
Interpretation: Fu Yin in the inner trigram suggests internal changes or lamentations. The querent asked: "What might happen?" Answer: "Yin Yue (寅月, January-February) and Mao Day (卯日) jointly克 (restrict) the Chen Earth财爻 (wealth symbol), possibly indicating issues with spouses, servants, or finances."
Modern Application Suggestions: Internal Fu Yin indicates turmoil within teams or families:
Query: Inquiring about the safety of a wife at home.
Interpretation: The Xu Earth财爻 (wealth symbol, representing the wife) is in Fu Yin and restricted by the month and day, indicating major disaster. The querent asked: "When will it occur?" Answer: "The day暂时合 (temporarily harmonizes) with Xu, so despite current restrictions from Yin and Mao, there is暂时无妨 (temporary safety). But in Chen Yue (辰月, March-April), Fu Yin combined with月冲 (monthly clash) will make disaster unavoidable." The wife indeed passed away in March.
Modern Application Suggestions: In health or safety queries, Fu Yin plus restriction signifies serious risks:
Fu Yin is a special phenomenon in Yijing studies, representing repetition, stagnation, and emotional melancholy (lamentation). The severity of吉凶 depends on the productive and restrictive relationships of the Yong Shen (representing the query focus): production alleviates misfortune, restriction exacerbates it. It emphasizes differentiated analysis of internal and external environments (inner vs. outer trigrams) and the interaction of time (monthly and daily influences) and space (directional elements).
In modern contexts, Fu Yin can be analogized to psychological gridlock, project stagnation, or environmental pressure:
Fu Yin embodies the Yijing philosophy of "change and permanence": change always involves repetitive patterns, reminding humanity to humbly face natural laws. It advocates dynamic balance—seeking breakthroughs through productive and restrictive relationships, not passively accepting fate. Modernly, this encourages integrating empirical thinking (e.g., data verification) with ancient wisdom for cultural传承与创新 (inheritance and innovation).
