Chapter 7 of 10
五禽戏
The Deer Play imitates the lightness, ease, and galloping momentum of a deer. It consists of two movements—Deer Push and Deer Gallop—with emphasis on the coordinated engagement of the waist, back, neck, and limbs.
To begin, slightly bend both legs and shift the body's center of gravity to the right leg. Step the left foot forward and to the left along the inside of the right foot, landing heel-first. Turn the body slightly to the right, swing both hands in loose fists toward the right side of the body with palms facing down at shoulder height, and follow the right fist with your gaze.
Next, shift the center of gravity forward, bend the left knee, and plant the foot firmly with the toes turned outward. Straighten the right leg and press it firmly into the ground. Turn the body to the left, and as both hands change into "deer antler" hand shapes, circle them upward, leftward, and backward with palms facing outward and fingertips pointing back. At this point, the left arm bends and extends sideways with the elbow pressing against the left side of the waist; the right arm is raised before the head, reaching toward the left-back with the palm facing outward and fingertips pointing back. Look toward the right heel.
Then turn the body to the right, withdraw the left foot, and stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Simultaneously, circle both hands upward, rightward, and downward, letting the loose fists settle in front of the body. Look forward and slightly downward.
Step the left foot forward with the knee bent, and extend the right leg straight to form a left bow stance. At the same time, swing both hands in loose fists upward and forward in an arc to the front of the body, bending the wrists to shoulder height and shoulder width, with palms facing down. Look forward.
Next, shift the center of gravity backward, straighten the left knee with the entire sole on the ground, and bend the right knee. Lower the head, arch the back, and draw in the abdomen. At the same time, internally rotate both arms, extend the palms forward with the backs of the hands facing each other, and change the loose fists into "deer antler" shapes.
Then shift the center of gravity forward and lift the upper body. Straighten the right leg and bend the left knee to return to a left bow stance. Relax the shoulders and sink the elbows; externally rotate both arms as the "deer antlers" revert to loose fists at shoulder height, palms facing down. Look forward.
Finally, withdraw the left foot and stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart; both fists open into palms and return to the sides of the body. Look forward.
Raise both palms diagonally forward from the sides to chest height, palms facing up. Look forward. Then bend both elbows, bring the palms inward, and press down, letting them hang naturally at the sides of the body. Look forward.
