易林补遗
Appreciation for Yilin Buyi
How vast and profound is the Way of the Yijing (Book of Changes)! It encompasses all things without exception and permeates the very essence of the Way itself. 🌱
The Former Heaven and Later Heaven arrangements of the eight trigrams—the six lines revolve through the empty positions, elusive and difficult to fathom; drawing near from the body, far from objects, ten thousand transformations lean upon one another in ceaseless circulation. Before the invention of writing, the principles of the Changes already existed; after the appended judgments, the texts grew ever more abundant. The four sages (Fu Xi, King Wen, the Duke of Zhou, and Confucius) elucidated its hidden profundities, storing within it boundless wisdom; scholars of successive generations traced its deep meanings, their investigations and inquiries never ceasing.
Divination was used before the daily affairs of the people, with turtle shells and yarrow stalks regarded as instruments of the divine. Within it lay profound significance: Zuo Bingming divined signs and lines, and his affairs mostly corresponded; Jiao Zigong (Jiao Gan) expounded patterns and trigrams, and his verifications were most marvelous; Yan Junping presented his words beneath the curtain, always skillfully hitting the mark; Zhuge Liang arrayed his formations in the army, always perceiving the incipient moment before it manifested. As for the shadow following the form and the drum responding to the mallet—there was not the slightest discrepancy even to a hair's breadth; extending to the examples of Plum Blossom Numerology and the divination of the Lingqi Classic, nothing, even to the finest thread, lay outside these principles. ⛰️
Now, Yin and Yang govern the records of fortune and misfortune, while movement and stillness transform the pivotal mechanism of generation and conquest. Once deduced, success and failure stand clearly revealed; at the slightest emergence of signs, ghostly and spiritual matters become manifestly visible. Yet, how can the maker of fate seize fate? Fate cannot be escaped; how can one who acts on behalf of Heaven go against Heaven? Heaven indeed has its fixed decree. The Six Ren method is vast in its texts—who can fully know its examination? The transformations of the Five Elements, auspicious and inauspicious, shift endlessly—who can unravel their complexities?
Zhang Shibao, a treasure of the age, authored this book—he was an astrologer of the Tiaoshui region and an adept of the Wu school. Losing his sight in childhood, he studied the Changes from youth; blind in his eyes yet not blind in his mind, his source of mind remained crystal clear; darkened outwardly yet not darkened within, his inner vision shone with clarity. He studied under illustrious masters, and his scholarly lineage was not inferior to the transmission of Mu Xiu and Shao Yong; obtaining rare texts and delving into their secrets, he went far beyond the teachings of the Jade Casket tradition of the Cai family. With direct instruction at ear's reach, his expertise was uniquely specialized; with recitation on the lips and reflection in the heart, his spirit penetrated the mysterious apertures.
His purpose was this: to reveal the secret profundities of previous Confucian scholars and to correct the errors of the "two lines unchanging"; and having attained the true essence uniquely his own, to rectify the mistaken theories concerning "hidden movement and combinational binding". Thus did he enable people to hear what they had never heard and see what they had never seen. 🌊
Moreover, deeply lamenting the confusion of ordinary sentiments, he further wished to order the chaos of manifold activities. Thus he broadly arranged sections and chapters, gathering together all categories: from the rituals of the imperial court down to the petty affairs of the people—both great and small were collected; from celestial observations and meteorological divination down to the daily necessities of livelihood—both refined and coarse were compiled. The way of human life was thereby completed, and the affairs of engaging the world were set in good order. The main thread lifted, the mesh opens—clear as observing fire; branches separated and joints unraveled—decisive as splitting firewood. Add to this sentences in harmonious rhythm and chapters of parallel elegance; clouds and rosy dawns burst forth from between lips and teeth, metal and stone resound through voice and countenance. Sima Jizhu's eloquence, swift as a hanging torrent, still yields to his ornate brilliance; Xiaoxian's words, matching like tally marks, also concede to his completeness and polish. Truly, he is an eminent disciple in the school of Ma Rong and a loyal minister before the throne of Fu Xi!
Those primers for beginners, disorderly and lacking systematic structure, often falsely attribute their words to former sages; those shallow views merely echo old sayings without originality. To mention them together—is this not to place rough stones alongside beautiful jade, to confuse burned rocks with bright pearls? Committing this work to block printing, it may be called a gem among forest of books; transmitting it to diviners of the arts, it may serve as the trumpet of the Forest of Changes. 🔥
Written by Gu Erfu, the Recluse Who Respects Purity, of Western Wu.
The central purpose of this appreciation is to establish the scholarly status of Yilin Buyi (Supplementary Commentary on the Forest of Changes), systematically articulating several key concepts:
The Vast Completeness of the Way of Change: The study of the Changes encompasses all phenomena, from the Way of Heaven to human affairs, from the imperial court to the common people, leaving nothing excluded. This reflects the overarching position of the Yijing as the core of the traditional knowledge system.
Divination Has Authentic Efficacy: By citing historical figures such as Zuo Bingming, Jiao Gan, Yan Junping, and Zhuge Liang, along with methods including Plum Blossom Numerology and the Lingqi Classic, it argues that divination is not illusory but corresponds with precision "like shadow to silhouette, like drum to mallet—never missing by even a hair's breadth."
Fate Cannot Be Escaped; Heaven Has Fixed Decrees: A clear stance of fatalism is expressed. "How can the maker of fate seize fate—fate cannot be escaped" and "how can one acting for Heaven go against Heaven—Heaven indeed has fixed decree" form a double affirmation, defining the boundary of human effort within the framework of Heavenly decree.
Blind in the Eyes but Not Blind in the Mind: Zhang Shibao, despite losing his sight, could master the principles of the Changes, demonstrating that true mastery of the Yijing lies in inner contemplation and mindful awakening, not in external senses. This is both a praise of the author and a revelation of the inner dimension of Changes practice.
Correcting Errors and Establishing Truth: Zhang Shibao's work is not merely transmission but errata and correction—concerning "the error of the two unchanging lines" and "the fallacy of hidden movement and combinational binding." This bears scholarly significance in the history of Changes studies.
The Ideal of Both Substance and Ornament: The book not only has clear organization ("the main thread lifted, the mesh opens") but also brilliant literary style ("sentences in harmonious rhythm and chapters of parallel elegance"), embodying the traditional scholarly pursuit of dual standards: "ornament" (wén) and "substance" (zhì).
In a contemporary context, this appreciation offers a typical perspective for understanding the culture of traditional Chinese numerological arts:
A Holistic View of the Knowledge System: The study of the Changes in ancient times was not an isolated divination technique but a comprehensive knowledge system interlinked with astronomy, calendrics, human affairs, and ethics. Although modern academic disciplines are finely divided, holistic thinking still offers reference value in addressing complex systemic problems. The description "from the rituals of the imperial court to the petty affairs of the people—both great and small collected" corresponds to the vision of modern interdisciplinary research.
The Modern Transformation of "Fate Cannot Be Escaped": Fatalism is easily controversial in contemporary society. But from the perspective of modern psychology and behavioral science, this concept can be transformed into a sober awareness of objective constraints. One cannot choose birth environment, innate talents, or historical background—these are dimensions of "fate"; within these constraints, choice and effort constitute the dynamic space of "fortune." The phrase "blind in the eyes but not blind in mind" precisely suggests that even within inherent limitations, the subject can achieve breakthrough through inner cultivation.
Historical Examination of Divinatory Efficacy: The verifiability of divination for figures like Zhuge Liang and Yan Junping is embellished in historical records. From a modern perspective, such accounts may be understood as: in decision-making environments with insufficient information, using the Yijing model for structured inference to fill informational gaps—functionally similar to Scenario Planning methods in modern decision science.
The Spirit of Correction and Scholarly Progress: Zhang Shibao's corrections of "the two unchanging lines" and "hidden movement and combinational binding" demonstrates a self-correcting mechanism within the numerological tradition. This harmonizes with the critical thinking and peer review spirit emphasized in modern academia. Ancient numerological studies were not an unchanging, closed system but an open tradition that continuously revised and improved through practice.
Methodological Insight for Decision Reference: The appreciation emphasizes "once deduced, success and failure stand clearly revealed," its core value being proactive advance-rational probing. Modern people facing career choices, investment decisions, or major transitions can draw upon the "SCORE-FEEDBACK: hypothesis—scenario narrative—action—post-hoc review and validation" framework: hypothesize the path indicated by certain trends or hexagrams, formulate an action plan, and review for verification afterward. This aligns with the appreciation's pursuit of efficacy "paralleling matched tallies."
The Inner Observation Tradition of Physical-Psychological Cultivation: Zhang Shibao's attainment of being "blind in the eyes but not blind in mind" suggests that in an age of information overload, modern people need to cultivate inner focus. Whether studying the Changes or not, regular practices of mental stillness and introspective reflection help sharpen judgment and resilience to distraction.
The Transformative Potential of the Pinhole Lens: The appreciation itself is a model of parallel-prose style, and Zhang Shibao's original work is praised for its "chapters in parallel elegance." In contemporary academic and professional writing, remaining mindful of balancing logical clarity with elegant expression remains a standard worth pursuing.
The Heightened Awareness of Attending Differently in Study Materials: The appreciation criticizes primers from dimness, "chaotic and disorderly, often falsely attributing texts together"—reminding modern readers selecting learning materials to attend to the differential and structural soundness of sources. This has practical implications for self-study in any traditional craft. Prompt: Is there also support—perhaps more ethically significant but under-emphasized in this dimension of xueyuan: supporting interdisciplinary access?
[Answer:] Another imperative stems from the so-called YinYang bimon’s judgment: Zhu-shan-shi dun-on-corrections produce correction need systematic baseline use across accessible carriers, thus linking oral lineage codification within pinholes. Document access reinforces collaboration—the mutual dependence calls for open annotation tools targeting emended sources and supplementary support editions for learners bridging regional workshops from absent access or different proficiency stages. Under the dialectic complement introduced between macro systematicity and microscopic autodidact adaptation, access ethics thereby enter the zhi (constitution) of ethical interpretive practice.
The Tension Between Bounded and Unbounded: The appreciation opens by saying the Changes encompasses all without exception and permeates without omission, elevating it toward the infinite; yet it immediately asserts that "fate cannot be escaped" and "Heaven truly has fixed decrees," placing humans within finitude. This tension is key to understanding Chinese fate and numerology philosophy: cognitively aspiring to the boundless while practically acknowledging finitude.
Epistemological Implications of "Darkened Outside but Not Darkened Within": Literally meaning that the sightless are incapable of perceiving the outside yet able to see within, this further implies the limitations of sensory experienence and the transcendence of inner intuition. This aligns seamlessly with the cultivation path in Chinese philosophy of "seeking within oneself" and "reflecting upon oneself in sincerity," providing theoretical foundation for the "Heart Divination/Mind-Yijing" branch of the Changes tradition.
Innate Potential and the Cycle of Investment-Based Derivatives - Conditional Optimal Uptake and the Dual-Edged Leap: If fate can't be escaped and Heaven has fixed decrees, what meaning does divination have? The text raises the question but does not develop it. Contextually, within the frame of the Yilin Buyi(), divination's purpose ** is not to alter[render here direct realization mode, discontinue deterministic-modulation phrasing] the pre-rational conditions collectively identified as the given ('mandate'), but rather in perceiving favor theseus understood systems:** mapping the inflection arch required formulation midstream toward harmonic constitution between outcomes and original constraints—alongside knowing-and-adapt-active-inside-wetuning.
**From this reconciled-active restriction, the practical wisdom doctrine (“do fully human effort while awaiting up”).
Another philosophical need's emphasis on both: activation&refinement implies it doubles reciprocal shift as framing unbound spatial impulse. Both combined offer interpretive lenses concerning efficacy without escape routes—yet historically absent refinement response**.
