When a woman divines about marriage, the Official Ghost line (官鬼爻) serves as the primary symbol, with the Responding line (应爻) as the basis of judgment. When a woman divines about her husband, the Official Ghost line being vigorous and flourishing is auspicious; if the Official Ghost is void, it cannot be used. Also beware the Descendant line (子孙爻) moving to harm the Official Ghost; delight in the Wealth line (妻财爻) flourishing to aid the Official Ghost.
When a woman divines about her husband, the inner trigram represents the wife and the outer trigram represents the husband; additionally, the Self line (世爻) represents the wife and the Responding line represents the husband. When a man seeks a wife, it is auspicious for the Self line to be yang and the Responding line yin with the Responding line moving—this is called "attaining position." When a woman seeks a husband, it is auspicious for the Self line to be yin and the Responding line yang. When yin and yang attain their proper positions, marriage will be harmonious; even if yin and yang are crossed, it still indicates lasting joy and harmony.
Taking in a son-in-law is like adopting a son, and must be examined in the same way as the marriage chapter. Within the hexagram's inner and outer trigrams, or the Self and Responding lines, there must be one yin and one yang to constitute a proper match. Pure yin or pure yang can never be accepted. If the Wealth and Ghost lines are incomplete, it is also unsuitable. The Parent line (父母爻) is the inhibiting spirit—it is auspicious if it does not move; the Descendant line is the son-in-law—if void, he is not a good match, and it should not move, for movement fears harm to the husband. If the Descendant moves but the Wealth line also moves, there is no harm in assisting the Ghost.
The Self line represents oneself, and the Responding line represents the son-in-law; neither should be void. If the Self is void, one secretly intends to send him back; if the Responding is void, the son-in-law lacks lasting attachment. If both Self and Responding move, there will later be changes. Hexagrams with Six Clashes (六冲) should not be used at all. When a combining place encounters a clash, or the hexagram transforms into Six Clashes, it indicates initial harmony but eventual separation.
When divining about offspring, the Descendant line serves as the primary focus; it is auspicious if it does not encounter extinction, void, clash, or destruction. The Descendant line—regardless of yin or yang, weak or strong—as long as it appears in the hexagram and does not fall into void of the ten-day cycle or month-break, offspring are assured. To determine whether children come early or late, examine the Descendant's strength: vigorous and flourishing, or moving, means early arrival; weak and still means late arrival. Hidden and concealed means delayed birth; visible and manifest means early birth.
If the Descendant is weak or extinct, offspring may come in the year when the Brother line (兄弟爻) holds sway; if vigorous and flourishing, conceive in the year of incubation and nourishment. If the hexagram contains no Descendant line, await the year when the Descendant holds sway before offspring arrives.
Three divination examples:
Example 1: In the year of Xinchou (辛丑), first month, day of Shen (申), asking in what year a son would be born. Divination yielded the Ding (鼎) hexagram. The Descendant was too weak, properly indicating delay—conception came only in the year of Yisi (乙巳), which unfortunately resulted in a miscarriage. Waiting again, in the year of Bingwu (丙午), the useful line gained vigor, and finally a son who could carry on the family line was born.
Example 2: In the year of Jiashen (甲申), second month, day of Zi (子), asking in what year a son would be born. Divination yielded the Shi (师) hexagram. The Descendant occupied a vigorous position, indicating early birth—indeed, pregnancy occurred in the year of Yiyou (乙酉), and a son was born in the year of Bingxu (丙戌). The Descendant belonged to Wood; Wood's incubation is in You (酉), and Wood's nourishment is in Xu (戌).
Example 3: In the year of Jihai (己亥), fourth month, day of Chou (丑), asking whether one would have children. Divination yielded the Daxu (大畜) hexagram, quiet and still. None of the six lines showed a Descendant, but fortunately the hidden spirit—Genshen (申) Metal Descendant from the Gen (艮) hexagram—lay beneath the third line's Chen (辰) Earth. The hidden (flying) line could generate the hidden-in-waiting (hidden) spirit, so a son was certain. Since the Descendant did not emerge openly, the child would come late—only in the year of Wushen (戊申), when the Descendant encountered the year-star (太岁), would a son capable of establishing the family be born.
The Self line represents oneself; falling void indicates insufficiency of essence-yang requiring medical regulation. The Responding line represents the wife; facing void indicates the wife's destiny lacks children, making it proper to take a concubine. If neither Self nor Responding is void, while the Descendant alone is trapped, this is Heaven's decree of childlessness—not subject to human determination. If a weakened Descendant transforms into void or extinction, even if a child is obtained, disaster and harm will follow.
When a husband asks about his wife's pregnancy, or when elders inquire on behalf of others, the Descendant line is always taken as the useful spirit. When a son divines about his mother's pregnancy, one does not look at the Descendant but instead takes the Brother line. When others divine on behalf, one should examine the Responding line and the Azure Dragon (青龙) and Heaven's Joy (天喜). In all divinations about pregnancy, the useful line must appear in the hexagram and not be void—then pregnancy is genuine. If the useful line falls into obscurity and neither Azure Dragon nor Heaven's Joy moves, it is assuredly a false pregnancy.
If the inhibiting spirit moves vigorously, the pregnancy is difficult to preserve. The second line represents the fetal position and should not encounter the Official Ghost. If the second line is void, the useful line suffers month-break, and the Official line moves again, disaster is certain—this is decidedly not pregnancy. If the Descendant is vigorous and flourishing with Azure Dragon and Heaven's Joy interacting, pregnancy is certain, and the pregnant woman will be healthy and safe.
Master Chunfeng (淳风) deemed the Daxu (大畜) hexagram an auspicious omen of conception; in my humble opinion, the Fengshui Huan (风水涣) hexagram is also added—the character Huan (涣) contains a "person within the belly," hence pregnancy is assured. Trials have never failed.
When divining about securing pregnancy, the Descendant line should be still and vigorous—most auspicious. Even if it moves, transforming in a generating direction, it is harmless. But if it transforms into defeat or extinction, or transforms into a Parent line, the pregnancy will be difficult to secure. A void Official Ghost is excellent; if the Official moves, repeated disasters and misfortunes are certain. If the Descendant is month-broken, how can the child reach full term? If the fetal line is void, how can it mature? When the hexagram has Six Clashes, miscarriage is imminent; when the lines have Six Combinations, the child is held safe in the womb.
If the Official Ghost moves chaotically, prayers to the spirits may bring healing; if the Descendant is not broken, medicine must be taken for stability. To determine the day when the pregnancy will be secured, the Descendant must come into its value day—naturally controlling the Ghost and generating Wealth—or when the day combines with second line, the fetus will be at ease. When reckoning the time of miscarriage, conversely take the Parent or Official Ghost value day, or when the Descendant approaches death, extinction, or defeat.
White Tiger moving, Azure Dragon void, or clashing the fetal line or Descendant symbol—all indicate safe delivery. The first line represents the birthing mother; it delights in vigor and flourishing and fears encountering the Official line. The Wealth line represents the pregnant woman; it greatly fears void and even more so transforming into a Ghost. Both the Descendant and the fetal line should be still and vigorous, avoiding void and clash.
The midwife (birthing woman) is represented by the Responding line as primary, with the Wealth line secondary. If among these two lines, one generates the Self, generates the Descendant, and also generates the first line, this is greatly auspicious. If they clash the Self, clash the Descendant, or clash the first line, harm is certain and she cannot be employed.
The first line represents the birthing mother, the Self line the head of household, and the Descendant line the child—none should receive clash or restraint from the Responding or Wealth lines. If the Wealth and Responding symbols clash the first line, fear injury to the birthing mother; if they clash the Descendant, fear injury to the child; if they clash the Self line, it merely indicates deceptive intentions. If the Brother and Official Ghost lines are both still, it is auspicious; if they move, calamity follows. If the Responding and Wealth lines are both void, or month-broken, this person lacks capability and should be replaced.
When examining the midwife alongside a birth divination, one does not take the Wealth and Responding lines as useful spirits but instead uses the fifth line for the midwife; the inner interposing lines (间爻) also represent the midwife. When the pregnant woman divines for herself, the Self line represents her own body; if restrained by the fifth line or the interposing lines, she will suffer injury. When a husband divines about his wife's labor, he takes the Wealth and Responding lines as primary; if the fifth line or interposing lines harm the Wealth, clash the Responding, or attack the first line, by no means employ that midwife.
When a husband divines about his wife's labor, if the Wealth line does not fall into void, it is greatly auspicious; if the Descendant is vigorous and flourishing and receives generation and support, the child will be free from obstruction and harm.
To determine whether the child is male or female, first examine the moving lines: a yin line moving and transforming into yang indicates a boy; a yang line moving and transforming into yin indicates a girl. If both yin and yang lines move, or all six lines are quiet, making determination difficult, then examine whether yin encloses yang—indicating a boy—or yang encloses yin—indicating a girl. If neither type of enclosure occurs, then examine the Descendant line: its being a single (少阳) [yang] line indicates a boy; its being a split (少阴) [yin] line indicates a girl. The alternating (交) and heavy (重) lines, when moving, necessarily produce changes: although 交 is yin by nature, it transforms into young yang and produces a boy; although 重 is yang by nature, it transforms into young yin and produces a girl. If the hexagram has no Descendant line, take the hidden Descendant line from the inner hexagram.
Example: On a bingwu (丙午) day in the fifth month, asking whether the child would be male or female. Divination yielded the Weiji (未济) hexagram, quiet. Both inner and outer Descendant lines were in phases of vigor, with sun and moon generating and supporting them—indicating twins. The inner trigram's yin enclosing yang meant a boy; the outer trigram's yang enclosing yin meant a girl. Since yang came first and yin followed, twins were indeed born—first a boy, then a girl.
Example: On a xinwei (辛未) day in the fourth month, asking about the child's sex. Divination yielded the Guimei (归妹) hexagram. Yin and yang neither enclosed each other, nor did any of the six lines show a Descendant symbol; the hidden Douishui (兑) family's Haishui (亥) was moreover in void of the ten-day cycle. Male or female could not be distinguished. Using the mutual (interlocking) hexagram to form Jiji (既济), the outer palace's Kan (坎) Water matched the Dui family's Descendant; Kan signifies "middle son," and indeed a boy was born.
To know the day of delivery: first examine in which ten-day cycle the fetus line falls into void; the Self line then arrives on the day of its incubation or nourishment. If the hexagram has no Descendant, await the Descendant's value day. If the Descendant is weak, await the Brother's value day or when the Descendant encounters long-life. If the Descendant is at its extinction point, it arrives on a day of generation or support. If the Descendant falls into void, await the day when the day-stem clashes the Descendant. If the Descendant enters the tomb, await the day when the day-stem clashes the tomb. When White Tiger moves, delivery is near. When the hexagram has Six Clashes, delivery is very swift.
During labor and delivery, the Official Ghost's movement is dreaded; before and after pregnancy, the Brother line's shaking is feared. If Wealth faces month-break, how can the chamber be at peace? If the Descendant commits void of the ten-day cycle, succession of the family line is difficult. When a husband divines about wife or concubine, Wealth is the useful spirit; if it faces month-break or void of the ten-day cycle, difficult labor is indicated. Even if Wealth appears in the hexagram, if it transforms into a Brother line, or a Brother line moves in the hexagram, and sun and moon do not generate or support it, the wife will suffer illness.
When the parturient woman divines for herself, the Self line serves as the primary focus: encountering generation is auspicious, encountering restraint is inauspicious. In all cases of "following the Official into the tomb" (随官入墓) or "assisting the Ghost to injure the body" (助鬼伤身), she will suffer the ordeal of childbirth. If the Ghost is void and auspicious spirits generate the Self line, she will ultimately see peace and health; but if the Ghost or evil spirits move to clash and restrain her, disaster cannot be escaped.
When divining about a wet nurse, first examine the Responding line, then the Wealth line; they absolutely should not be in void of the ten-day cycle or month-break. If the Responding line bears the Ghost, or Wealth transforms into an Official line, this woman will be plagued by illness.
If the hexagram has no Hai (亥) or Zi (子) Water lines, her milk will surely be insufficient. Even if Water lines exist, if they transform into Earth, the milk will be ample at first but dry up later. If Water transforms into Metal or into vigor, the milk will be scarce at first but abundant later. If Water lines appear repeatedly and Metal arises, the milk will be more than sufficient.
The Descendant line represents the child; it must not be in void or extinction. Encountering generation and vigor, the child will surely thrive. If the Responding line clashes and restrains the Happiness spirit (福神, i.e., the Descendant), the child will suffer harm from the woman; if the Descendant receives generation and combination from the Responding line, she will be effective in nurturing the child.
Six Clashes throughout indicate no affinity between the parties. The Parent line should not move; if it moves, the infant will encounter hardship. If the Official Ghost comes forth heavily, much argument and conflict is indicated; with Scarlet Bird (朱雀), it easily invites idle disputes; with Dark Warrior (玄武), there will be covert theft of clothing and supplies; with White Tiger, calamity extends to this woman; with Coiling Serpent (腾蛇), fright reaches the infant. If the Brother line moves, expenses will be excessive.
The Self line represents the head of household; the Responding line represents the wet nurse. If the Responding carries the Ghost, or the Pool of Salt (咸池) moves to restrain the Self, she is greedy and licentious, and dark schemes should be feared.
When divining about children, the Descendant line serves as the useful spirit; when an elder brother divines about a younger brother, the Brother line is the useful spirit. If the useful spirit is void, the child will be difficult to raise to adulthood. If the useful spirit transforms into void or extinction, transforms into an inhibiting spirit, or faces month-break, although present at the moment, how can it continue the family line? If the useful spirit encounters extinction yet receives generation and support, one fears repeated illness, but death is not inevitable.
When a father divines about his son, the Parent line is the inhibiting spirit—it should be still, not moving; the Brother line is the source spirit—it should arise, not be extinct. If the Wealth line moves, it drains the Descendant's qi, and the child's health will be poor. The Official Ghost is the hostile spirit: if it moves, numerous barriers and evil influences arise; if still, neither illness nor worry.
When an elder brother divines about a younger, the Brother line is the useful line, the Ghost is the inhibiting symbol, the Parent serves as the source spirit, the Descendant becomes the draining element, and Wealth serves as the hostile spirit—each has its own categorical preferences and aversions, and one cannot apply a single pattern universally.
If the hexagram exhibits "assisting the Ghost to injure the body" (助鬼伤身), and the useful symbol is at its extinction point while the source spirit does not move, chronic illness and lingering distress are certain. If the useful line lacks vitality and moreover faces the Scarlet Bird, transforming into a Brother line, when the child reaches adulthood it may befriend worthless companions. If the useful line is vigorous and flourishing and bears the Azure Dragon and Nobleman (贵人), the child will later become a person of great accomplishments, bringing glory to ancestors and honor to the clan.
When a son is given out for adoption—and daughters follow the same reasoning—if the Descendant is vigorous and flourishing and the Brother line generates it, the adoption is auspicious. If the Descendant meets void, the child will be difficult to raise to adulthood. If the Parent or Official Ghost moves forth, many calamities will plague the child, not to mention disputes. If the Parent moves and the Brother also moves, the child is so focused on the generation it receives that it forgets the restraint—in this case, it unexpectedly obtains good fortune.
When an elder brother gives out a younger brother for adoption, one does not examine the Descendant but instead takes the Brother line as the useful spirit; it must not be in void or extinction. If the Parent line moves, good fortune is even further enhanced; if the Official Ghost moves, it is even more to be feared.
The Guihun (归魂) hexagram favors temporary adoption, not permanent arrangement. The Youhun (游魂) hexagram indicates that after departure, many changes will occur. If both Self and Responding move, there will necessarily be alterations. Self restraining Responding is acceptable; Responding restraining Self is unsuitable. Six Clashes indicate absolutely no affinity—by no means adopt. If Self and Responding combine, they will surely remain together long; mutual generation adds still more harmony. If a combining place transforms into a clash, they begin compatibly but end in separation. If the Responding position faces void of the ten-day cycle or month-break, this person cannot even save themselves—how can they have leisure of mind to raise another's child?
In all cases of adopting sons or daughters, or monks and Daoists taking disciples, the Descendant line serves as the useful spirit. When it encounters vigor and generation, it is auspicious; when it encounters void and break, it is inauspicious. If the Parent moves, the child's life is not long; if the Official Ghost arises, unforeseen calamity occurs. If the Responding falls void, lasting relationship is difficult.
The Self and Responding lines should not both move—if both move, changes occur; they should not both be void—if both void, duration will be short. If the hexagram has Six Clashes, it certainly indicates the father going south and the son north (estrangement). If it transforms into Six Clashes, ultimately nothing will come to fruition. The Descendant should not clash or restrain the Self; it should not be harmed by sun or moon. Combinations in the lines indicate everlasting harmony. If a combining place encounters a clash, later there will be changes. The Youhun hexagram indicates coming and going without stability, and many vicissitudes.
In all cases of changing one's name or inheriting another's household registration, Six Clashes certainly indicate failure. Void Self or broken Self are both inauspicious; extinct Official or void Official likewise accomplish nothing.
For filling an official post under an inherited name, the Official Ghost line particularly needs to be vigorous and flourishing, and the Ghost must not restrain the Self body. For inheriting another's craft or profession, one seeks the Wealth line flourishing. Regardless of public or private changes, a single Brother line moving makes success difficult. If the Brother bears the Scarlet Bird and moves to restrain the Self, or if the Responding bears the Scarlet Bird and restrains the Self, there will be outsiders who step forward to contest the matter and create conflict. If the Self line and Official line are both free from void, break, clash, and extinction, everything will succeed—no plan will fail.
Trades vary in scale, wisdom, and folly—how could one not follow a teacher? Affairs involve success and failure, going and staying—one must consult divination.
For those studying the three teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, Daoism), the teacher is like an uncle or elder. If the Parent line is vigorous and flourishing, or comes to combine with or generate the Self body, full transmission of the tradition will certainly be obtained. For learning various crafts and skills, first examine the Brother line, then the Responding line; if either of these two symbols is void, there will be no capacity to receive the teaching.

For doing business with capital, if the Descendant moves and the Wealth line is manifest, prosperity will ultimately arrive. For living by one's bare-handed skills, if Wealth moves and Ghost flourishes, the family will certainly rise. When serving in official capacity, the Self line fears the Ghost line's clash and restraint. For opening a business establishment, the self body should receive generation and support from the Happiness spirit (Descendant).
For those studying the Confucian classics, the Parent line is the useful spirit. For those seeking official rank, the Official Ghost line is the useful spirit. For shamans and spirit-mediums, the Official line is also used. For monks and Daoists, the Descendant line is the useful spirit. All useful lines should be vigorous and flourishing, and each should avoid void. Vigor means all matters succeed; void means nothing is accomplished.
All manner of crafts and trades should have the Wealth spirit flourishing. If Wealth is void, profit and resources will certainly be cut off. Without Ghost there is no thread of direction; with Youhun hexagram, one will wander back and forth without settlement. If the Self commits void of the ten-day cycle, there is a natural inclination to change course; if the Responding suffers month-break, the teacher has no heart for transmission. Six Clashes means both parties lack mutual feeling—the craft will be hard to learn; Six Combinations means teacher and student are congenial—success will follow.
For studying the classics, one must examine the Parent line: vigorous means accomplishment, void means no benefit. For selecting a single classic only, examine the Parent line directly without considering the Five Elements. For a mixed divination about which classic, one must distinguish by the Five Elements.

If the Parent belongs to the Earth line, one will surely excel in the Yi Jing; if it resides in the Metal position, the Spring and Autumn Annals will surely yield top honors. All other cases follow this pattern.
For scholars of the classics, the worst is for the Wealth and Descendant lines to move; the best is for the Parent and Official Ghost to flourish. If the Parent transforms into another Parent, later there will be reversal in classical attainment; if the Parent transforms into an Official, distinction and glory are certain; if the Parent transforms into Wealth, diligence at the start and indolence at the end ensue; if it transforms in a generating direction, literary skill improves; if it transforms into extinction, the mind becomes languid and the will slack.
When engaging a teacher for one's studies, the Responding line must not be placed in the void position. When educating one's sons in letters, the Parent symbol should not reside in a place of extinction. The Responding line represents the "western seat" (the teacher), and the Parent line represents the literary arts. These two symbols both need to be flourishing. A void or clashed Responding indicates giving up halfway; a void or extinct Parent certainly means the teaching will be fruitless. If the Wealth line moves, a whole year will be wasted.
With a hexagram of Six Clashes, encountering this when following a teacher means the two parties have no affinity and difficulty in finishing what was begun. If the main hexagram combines but transforms into Six Clashes, they gather in spring and summer and separate in autumn and winter.
A void Self means the master is not respected, and one will naturally become negligent; a moving Responding means the other party is not oriented toward the pupil and will seek other masters. If Self and Responding both move, each has a change of heart; if Self and Responding are both void, neither party has attachment to the other. Mutual generation and combination certainly indicate harmony between guest and host. If the Parent is vigorous and supports the self, learning advances doubly. If the Brother line strengthens the Self, tuition fees will multiply.
If the Parent is vigorous and flourishing, daily progress continues; if it further generates the Self body, even greater benefit accrues from teaching. If the Brother line moves or occupies the Self line, the cost of provisions will double.
With a Youhun hexagram, the teacher is restless and unsettled. If the Responding faces month-break, or if the Responding or the "destiny" enters the tomb along with the Official, this person will certainly suffer calamity or encounter litigation.
If the inner and outer trigrams yield the Qian (乾), Kun (坤), or Li (离) hexagrams, the classics and books unfold as exquisite literary works. Although the names of pure Qian, pure Kun, and pure Li are auspicious, the fault lies in their Six Clashes structure; therefore they are not used.
In general divinations about establishing a study hall or tutor position, the Self line represents oneself, the Responding line represents the employer, the Parent line represents the school or study, the Descendant line represents the students, the Wealth line represents the teaching salary, the Ghost line represents the person who recommends one for the position, and the Brother line represents fellow scholars.
A void Self means one will not encounter an appreciative patron; a void Responding means no employer accepts one. A void Parent means difficulty in finding a good school; a void Wealth means the salary will be very meager. A void Descendant means the number of students will not be great; a void Ghost means no one recommends one. If Self and Responding are not void, there is ultimately hope.
Hexagrams with Six Clashes, or those lacking the Official Ghost, certainly mean no position. If a combining place encounters a clash, or the hexagram transforms into Six Clashes, though one may see initial success, that year certainly will not see completion.
When asking about moving to a new post, Youhun hexagrams are greatly favorable; when divining about remaining in one's present position, a Guihun hexagram is preferred. To know on which day the appointment is finalized, examine the Parent in detail. If the hexagram contains no Parent, one must wait for its value day. If a Parent line is vigorous, seek a day of tomb-combination; if weak, take the day of vigor-generation. Also observe which day generates the Self; even an empty Self can be appointed on that day.
All divinations about going elsewhere for study support, or dwelling away from home, are judged the same way. Both require the Parent line to be vigorous and flourishing, and the Self and Responding lines should not be void. A void Self means one's own person is obstructed; even if one goes, there will be no accomplishment. A void Responding means the other party will not accept one; even if accepted, there is no benefit. If the Parent is void, the expense on books and classical texts is wasted. If Wealth moves, one fears harm to one's documents; if the Ghost moves, one may invite disaster. Six Clashes indicate that harmony can never be achieved. If a combining place encounters a clash, or the hexagram transforms into clashing structure, though initially compatible, there will surely be changes later.
If the hexagram has no Official, nothing can be accomplished; if none of the six lines shows a Parent, one's labors are all in vain. For common people dwelling elsewhere, the hexagram name does not matter, and Wealth movement or Parent void need not even be considered; one only fears Six Clashes, Ghost movement, and void of Self and Responding. Only in matters of libraries and studies does one follow the previous determination.
