Volume One of Gong Du's Physiognomy
Gong Du states: The art of physiognomy has a long history. It is a specialized craft of China, which anyone may study. Thus the sages spoke of "finding recreation in the arts." They also said: "Even minor arts must have their admirable aspects." Applied to great matters, it can achieve accomplishments as grand as those of wind, cloud, dragon, and tiger; applied to minor matters, it offers benefits for navigating the world and conducting oneself. According to textual research, physiognomy originated during the era of the Yellow Emperor (Xuanyuan), with laws established by Feng Hou Shi, hence it was named "Feng Jian". By the Eastern Zhou period, various schools of physiognomy existed, such as those of Tang Ju, Que Yong, and Xi Ci, with particularly many specialists. It encompasses learning on order and chaos, rise and fall, celestial patterns and climates, human sentiment, and society. Its methods are simple yet its implications profound; it must not be taken lightly.
After the Burning of the Books by Qin Shi Huang, no transmitted versions survived in the world. Among the four, Ji Zha was the most virtuous, while Ji Guang was the most overbearing. Moreover, Ji Guang's son, Qing Ji, was brave and fierce, commanding substantial military forces. When the King of Wu died, by order of seniority Helü should have succeeded, while by virtue Ji Zha should have been chosen. Ji Guang, relying on his strength, proclaimed himself king. Helü felt indignant but lacked the power to contend with him. Thus, Helü humbled himself before worthy men, and fearing he might fail to secure true talent, he specially invited Tang Ju to discern and select talent. Wu Yuan, who played the flute and begged for food, was recommended by Tang Ju; Sun Wu, who lived in seclusion in a thatched hut, was acknowledged by Tang Ju as his mentor. Subsequently, Helü dominated Wu and destroyed Chu—this was the benefit of insight into human capability.
Towards the end of the Han dynasty (late Eastern Han), when Zhuge Liang captured Changsha, Huang Zhong and Wei Yan came to surrender. Huang Zhong was entrusted with military command, while Wei Yan was ordered to be executed. First Lord Liu Bei asked Zhuge Liang: "Wei Yan is without guilt; why must he be killed?" Zhuge Liang replied: "This man has a wolf-like neck and jackal-like voice, and a protruding occipital bone that is large at the top and narrow at the bottom. He will certainly rebel. Therefore, I kill him to eliminate future trouble." Lord Liu Bei said: "Killing a surrendered general and rejecting those who come to offer allegiance is no way to win people's hearts. Better to show mercy and pardon him." Zhuge Liang then admonished Wei Yan: "From now on, you must diligently and loyally serve the royal house." Later, during the Sixth Northern Expedition from Qishan, Zhuge Liang fell ill and passed away at Wuzhang Plains. Wei Yan indeed rebelled over disputes concerning the command and the funeral cortege. Fortunately, Zhuge Liang had already arranged for Ma Dai to execute him; otherwise, the Shu Han state would have been in peril. This too is the benefit of insight into human capability.
During the Tianbao era of the Tang dynasty, Guo Ziyi was a foot soldier under Ge Shuhan, and had been sentenced to death for a crime. As Li Bai passed by and saw Guo Ziyi, he observed his imposing skeletal structure—a nose like a hanging pendant, a forehead like an overturned liver—and exclaimed with emotion: "This is a pillar of the state. How can he be so lightly cast away?" He then visited Ge Shuhan and ransomed Guo Ziyi from punishment. Later, Guo Ziyi quelled the rebellion of An Lushan, stabilized the Tang dynasty, and was enfeoffed as the Prince of Fenyang. Afterwards, when Li Bai faced slander and jealousy, Guo Ziyi exerted every effort to protect him, and Li Bai avoided misfortune. This one small act of kindness brought benefits to both public and private spheres—yet another example of the benefit of insight into human capability.
During the Daoguang era of the Qing dynasty*, Zeng Guofan quelled the rebellion of Hong Xiuquan and Yang Xiuqing. Zeng Guofan was typically cautious and prudent;· in terms of talent, he was no match for Hu Linyi and Zuo Zongtang, yet his achievements surpassed theirs. Among his strengths, discerning and effectively employing people was paramount. When Jiang Zhongyuan served as the garrison commander of Liuhe, he was ordered to supervise the transport of military provisions. When Zeng Guofan observed his physiognomy and overall bearing, he was struck with astonishment and doubt. After Jiang Zhongyuan departed, Zeng Guofan sat in deep contemplation, as if lost in thought. Zuo Zongtang, seeing this, asked him why. Zeng Guofan said: "When I looked at Jiang Zhongyuan's bearing, I saw majesty and dignity—the Metal constitution with a Metal-tone voice, sword-like brows and phoenix eyes. I thought our nation had gained another pillar of the state, and I was greatly delighted. Yet when I later observed his walk—unsteady and wavering—if he were of the Wood constitution, it might not signify danger. But as the Metal constitution should manifest in a solid and heavy form, this sign of unsteadiness instead appeared alongside his honored rank, which certainly portends danger and calamity. It is a pity that such a clear and remarkable constitution should harbor such a ruinous feature." So he had pondered deeply. Later, Jiang Zhongyuan was promoted to Governor of Jiangsu and was killed by the Loyal Prince Li Xiucheng. From this single matter, one can see that Zeng Guofan was once again skilled in the art of knowing people. His emergence as a renowned general of the dynasty's restoration was, similarly, owing to the benefit of insight into human capability.
Gong Du says: What is called "Liunian" (the flow of years) is the standard method of calculating astrological-age periodicities. The ancient method assigned fourteen years to the ears, sixteen years to the forehead, four years to the brows, six years to the eyes, ten years to the nose, ten years to the philtrum, fifteen years to the Mercurial antechamber [mouth area], and twenty-four years to the four surrounding branches. Males proceed in a forward direction; females in reverse.
Conditions today, however, differ. Cycles vary from two to three years in duration, occasionally changing every year, and sometimes even several times within a single year. I therefore judge by facial parts: if a part is full and prominent, its period will be auspicious; if a part is sunken and defective, its period will be blocked. Where discrepancies arise, what is the cause? Generally speaking, if the constitution is clear and gaunt, good or ill fortune will manifest on the facial features two years in advance; if the constitution is muddy and heavy, such fortune will be delayed by two years. For those who possess a blend of clarity and turbidity, neither thick nor thin, results manifest according to the features themselves. In my investigations of the cyclical periods, there are also cases that come three to five years early or three to five years later; hence, one must apply addition or subtraction according to each person's constitution. A physiognomist must carefully weigh and evaluate in order to proceed accordingly.
Bodhidharma's Breathing-Onset Formula (Qiyun Kōujué):
A Water-form gains one year; Metal-form, three years. Earth-form, being thick-bodied, give four years more. Fire-form at five seeks profit and reversal— Wood-form at two, what doubt remains? With the virtue of Being Unobstructed, wherever one treads, they will receive support from others, feeling at home even in foreign lands. Predictions will prove accurate, and plans will flourish; this marks a nature of success and achievement.
With the flaw of Being Closed and Blocked, one finds it hard to journey far, confined to their doorstep, constrained in obscurity; ambitious plans end in failure, marking a nature of adversity and hindrance.
I. The Palace of Life: This is the Yintang or hall of the seal point. It is the root of the heart and the principal feature of the face. Named "Seal" for its noble and honored meaning.
