Chapter 12 of 14
公笃相法
Newly Revised and Verified General Chart of Danger
Gong Du said: The essence of physiognomy lies in the four words: fortune, misfortune, calamity, and blessing. The function of physiognomy lies in this one phrase: "seek good fortune and avoid misfortune."
Danger, peril, and alarm have been roughly discussed by worthy scholars of previous generations. However, there was no dedicated chart for reference, and what was recorded was not detailed—thus it remained fragmented and unsystematic. Moreover, the meanings were subtle and obscure, and most readers merely glossed over them without gaining much insight. Now I have specially compiled all the various dangers, perils, and alarms into one comprehensive chart, so that readers may easily understand.
I have investigated dangers, perils, and alarms and found that half originate from the physical structure, recorded in detail in the previous chapter; the other half arise from complexion and color, separately recorded in this chapter. Whenever danger is inherent in the physical structure—those destined for violent death, those who suffer injury or disability, or those who have passed through danger—if their complexion has not yet manifested signs of danger and peril, and if the luck of their current age cycle is still favorable, then the dangerous fact will not materialize. Comparing these two, complexion plays the more important role in manifesting danger. Thus, complexion should be the decisive basis.
There are twelve locations where danger and peril may manifest. There are six types of complexion indicating danger and peril. There are five types of eye expression indicating danger and peril. These are now classified and annotated in detail below.
I. Yuan Shou (The Head) — namely the Yintang area between the eyebrows. It is the sovereign of the entire face, internally corresponding to the heart's primary meridian, occupying the central point of the four directions—hence called the Head. All important relationships of the face are centered on the Yintang, signifying governance over all directions. It is relevant in every fortune cycle. Any improper complexion here is inauspicious. Those that oppose or overcome the four seasons are all signs of ruin, defeat, punishment, and detriment. If black or red complexion appears, danger and peril will certainly follow, leading to calamity of death. This is the first in importance among all locations. It should be examined in all four seasons.
II. Ming Men (Gate of Life) — located behind Ting Gong, on the protruding flesh of the ear gate. One position is behind the cheekbone, where the ear opening protrudes like a gate—hence named the Gate of Life. It relates to human life, internally belonging to the primary meridian of the kidneys. It is the root of life from the prenatal constitution. This accords with the principle that "Heaven first produces water." The kidneys generate bone marrow, and both the cerebrum and cerebellum belong to this system, as well as the spinal cord—all interconnected. This is the gate of life and death, the source of vitality. Among all locations, it occupies the second place in importance.
III. Tian Men (Gate of Heaven) — located in front of the curved temple hair, extending upward to Shan Lin, centrally to Bian Cheng, and downward to the tip of the eyebrow bone at Fu Tang—all collectively called the Gate of Heaven. Internally it belongs to the ancestral energy of the breast milk. It is called ancestral energy because all humans are nurtured by milk at birth, which cultivates the postnatal constitution. Hence it is the key to life and death. Common illnesses can be treated by consuming milk to strengthen the body, harmonize qi and blood, and cure chronic ailments—this serves as clear evidence. Among all locations, it occupies the third place in importance.
IV. Hou Wei (Rear Guard) — located below Yuan Shou, in the area of Shan Gen (the root of the nose), precisely the center between the two eyes. It is the passage of kidney qi and the Du meridian, and also connected to the Dan Zhong, gallbladder, and lungs. It represents the hereditary aspect of the prenatal constitution and serves as a key organ for digestion. Shan Gen means "root"—the root of foundation, and also the root of life. Among all locations, it occupies the fourth place in importance.
V. Ping Fan (Shield and Screen) — originally named Guo Yin, the alternative name for the two cheekbones. Internally it belongs to the primary meridian of the San Jiao (Triple Burner), hence titled the Officer of Central Assistance. The cheekbone signifies authority. It assists the upright and shields against the wicked, causing evil and turbid qi to descend rather than rise, allowing qi and blood to flow without obstruction. This represents a major mechanism for human life. Among all locations, it occupies the fifth place in importance.
VI. Jiao Guan (Junction of Passage) — located below the eyebrows and above the eyes, originally named San Yang. Internally it belongs to the connecting meridian joining the lungs and liver, serving as the hub between these two organs as a communication channel. Lung qi descends on the right, liver qi ascends on the left—this is the axle of the wheel for ascending and descending qi. Hence it regulates the mechanism of qi and blood rising and falling. If there is no ascent and descent, danger and death ensue. If the qi wheel does not turn, the blood wheel cannot transport. Among all locations, it occupies the sixth place in importance.
VII. San Yin — located below the two eyes, originally named the Wo Can region. Internally it belongs to the correlating meridian of the liver collateral, and the passage of the kidney's postpartum qi. The foot Jue Yin meridian belongs to the liver and serves as the hub of the Three Yin—hence the name. Tai Yin and Shao Yin both rely on Jue Yin as the pivotal transmission between the channels. It governs survival and death. Furthermore, the eight extraordinary meridians are connected to the liver and kidneys, thus it holds an important position. Among all locations, it occupies the seventh place in importance.
VIII. Bao Cang (Precious Granary) — originally named Ren Zhong (the philtrum). It is a place of channels and waterways, internally belonging to the primary meridian of the stomach and lungs. It serves as the granary official and place of storage. It also acts as a communication official, receiving from above and conveying to below, thus occupying a pivotal position and an important role. The blood vessels of humans: prenatally derived from the kidney's essential qi, postnatally derived from the stomach's grain qi. The stomach is the earth organ; earth gives birth to all things, and without it nothing can be transformed and generated. Thus it is the root of life in the postnatal constitution. Among all locations, it occupies the eighth place in importance.
IX. Qian Wei (Front Guard) — located above the Yintang, extending to Si Kong. Known together with Kong Zhong as two sections, also called Hua Gai, meaning the canopy of the Head. Internally it belongs to the primary meridian of the pericardium, responsible for protection—that is, guarding the important location of the Head. If the Head lacks its guard, the entire body becomes rigid. Among all locations, it occupies the ninth place in importance.
X. Bao Que (Precious Tower) — i.e., the tip of the nose (Zhun Tou), governing wealth and treasure. Internally it corresponds to the spleen's primary meridian, serving as the mechanism for distinguishing clarity from turbidity. If clarity and turbidity are not distinguished, functioning becomes impaired, and the whole structure is ruined. Among all locations, it occupies the tenth place in importance.
XI. Xuan Wu (Black Warrior) — located below the corner of the eye at Jian Men (the theft-door area), extending diagonally near the cheekbone. Internally it belongs to the connecting meridian of the liver, and the correlated meridian of San Jiao. The liver is the transmitter of the qi wheel; San Jiao shields against evil and filth. This illustrates the principle that evil can harm the virtuous. Thus it occupies an important position connected with life and death. Among all locations, it occupies the eleventh place in importance.
XII. Sheng Hua Guan (Gate of Generation and Transformation) — located below the water star, between the Cheng Jiang on the north peak. Internally it belongs to the primary meridian of the bladder and uterus, the source of human generation for both sexes. Hence it is a location of life's root, demonstrating the connection between survival and death. Among all locations, it occupies the twelfth place in importance.
Gong Du said: All twelve locations above have fatal significance, differing only in degree of severity—hence they are compared sequentially. Only when one of these specific locations displays inauspicious colors can death, danger, alarm, or misfortune follow. If other locations display the worst colors, they may cause losses, injuries, imprisonment, or litigation, but not necessarily death or peril—each location corresponding to its own facts. One must then examine the person's physical type, the phase of the year in which it occurred, which location manifested what type of complexion—only then can a certain standard of judgment be established. Finally, one must examine the person's qualifications, intelligence, status, environment, innate tendencies, good and evil karma, attachments of greed, anger, and delusion, as well as their associations and social interactions—only then can one accurately designate whether the result is primary suffering, appropriate suffering, or associated suffering.
I. Red Color 🟥 — Red is a class of the red hue. Its color is reddish with black, like blood drawn from a feverish sick pig—dark and lusterless, dull and lifeless, stagnant with a smothered sheen. This is true red. There is also a deep coagulated red-black, like burning fire—this is the most taboo color of all. It is unfavorable in all four seasons, though slightly less severe during the summer fire season, when like seeks like. Still, it remains dangerous, only reduced by degree. In other seasons it appears, it is a color of violent death and ruin. This is the first in importance.
II. Black Color ⬛ — Its color is black and dull, stagnant without luster, like the feathers of a crow, like the ash of burnt funeral paper money, or like the gray damp-soaked earth—this is black color. It is unfavorable in all four seasons, indicating violent death and danger. Only in the winter water season is it slightly less severe, being the case of like seeking like, reduced by degree. Otherwise, regardless of time, it is a color of death, ruin, and peril. This is the second in importance.
III. Withered Color 🦴 — Its color is between whitish and blackish, like dust-stained dark spots with an inky, mold-like sheen, much like aged, bleached bones—dark, stagnant, and lacking brilliance. In physiognomy, this is also called the color of thin gauze dyed with soap (smothered death). This is an extremely taboo color, also indicating the calamity of death and danger. It is unfavorable in all four seasons—peril, danger, and death from chronic wasting diseases terminate the majority of cases. This is the third in importance.
IV. Grisly Color 🌫️ — Its color is between whitish and bluish, like rotting wood soaked in water—foul, dark, devoid of luster, gray with no brightness; near or far, it exhibits stillness and lifelessness with absolutely no vitality. It resembles white cloth wetted with dingy dirty water—this is grisly color. This is the most taboo complexion, unfavorable in all four seasons, also indicating peril and death—death after punishment, harm, and waning decline. Hence, it is an indicator of danger. This is the fourth in importance.
V. Greasy Color 🫧 — Its color floats with an oily sheen, between bluish and whitish while shining like grease, like lard smeared on skin, like autumn dew on grass—this is greasy color. This is the most taboo complexion. It is most fatal in winter, secondary in summer and autumn; both periods are inauspicious, with deathly danger and calamities of unexpected misfortune. In the spring wood season it is slightly lighter, because like seeks like. In cases of illness and hardship, the severity is accordingly assessed as reduced. In other months, it can also signal danger. This is the fifth in importance.
VI. White Color ⚪ — Its color is pale white without blood tinge, parched without moistness, faint without freshness, grizzly without radiance—this is the complexion of a walking corpse. It is inauspicious in the spring, summer, and winter seasons, also indicating deathly shock and great calamity. Only in the autumn metal season is it somewhat mitigated, like seeking like by class, thus assessed with reduced severity. This is the sixth in importance.
Gong Du said: Regarding complexion, I have already drawn a dedicated chart and recorded each detail previously. Here, in connection with the General Chart of Danger, I discuss it once more. Earlier worthy scholars mostly treated it cursorily—their records are sketchy and imprecise, the majority falling short. Added to the lack of specificity and exactness, readers find it hard to grasp at a glance or commit to memory. This explains my classification and detailed annotation—that is the original intent in explaining each item one by one.
All six types of complexion listed above can lead to death, danger, alarm, shock, and various losses. Yet first, we must assess the severity of the location involved to judge the magnitude of the danger. Then examine the degrees of intensity of the respective color to judge the rapidity or lateness of the dangerous occurrence. Then one investigates the person's specific bodily structure and life fortune cycle to estimate the potential for change or outcome. Finally one considers the prevailing seasonal timing and how long the energy is active determining degree of peril versus resilience during the process. This constitutes an overall statistical framework whereby one determines its scale, severity, development, and eventual outcome, proportioned by time spans, rapidity or prolongedness. This is the living method built upon the living void—the method of all adaptive calculations, multiplicative adjustments.
Moreover, if the person in question is affluent with heavy responsibility (who implements strategies, holds public dealings etc.), In that case, when the aforementioned twelve locations show the six colors above, I judge—immediate danger in its completeness, with the practical incidents doubled in weight—because they rely heavily on what they hold, are mentally headstrong and proud, liable to confuse drowsing losses; none would fully prepare for unforeseen caligative turn. Conversely, if they occupy very top statures with crucial decision weights… Similar formula applicable—opposite when power or obligations are very limited further details confirm possibility boundaries, halffinals break even according to preexisting deeds patterns. Per any event established by hostile daily toil and struggle: they are bowed around environmental pressures, calculating with acute practicality—weight-bound reductions generally place liabilities accordingly… Once exceptional endurance moments proceed, other layers dissipate their defenses…
In general, for those confined by long-term weak beds with chronic ailments lingering from previous illness, management provisions cover:
matters bound by current life-stage years, physical form types, and concurrently a period / month that further needs being taken to also take into deciding degree by shifting laws: reduce for forms when severe circumstances lightened by harmonic natural guidance; effect doubled when seasonal balance is supplementary. Combining against systematic variation & proportional reclusibilities, … These known systems conjure at measured sense just beyond description until mastered corresponding understanding and further drawn beyond certainty… at meditative insights based deeply informed judgment each client and occasion requires rare integrative extension beyond any single text section.

Within these, there are two types: direct responsibility and collateral involvement. If a person holds the reins of power, enjoys substantial emoluments, and dangerous, ominous, or alarming events occur, then that person bears direct responsibility and cannot shirk accountability. If a person holds no position and receives no such emoluments, yet dangerous, ominous, or alarming events occur, it constitutes collateral involvement, without proper direct responsibility. The variations in manifestation differ, and the circumstances are bizarre and diverse; thus, determination and identification must be even more refined.
I shall now list in sequence the turning points of dangerous events:
First Type: Those who are ordinarily at ease
Every person has different circumstances and diverse environments. A person who is ordinarily at ease, without worries or anxieties, without vexation or disturbance, with a harmonious household, and prosperous external financial resources, already exhibits a scene of peace and a state of comfort and joy. There is no distant cause of ruin, but rather good seeds are sown; there is no immediate pressure, but rather the enjoyment of peace and blessing.
| Eye-Spirit Type | Criteria for Judgment | Death, No Rescue | Danger, Rescue Possible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spirit Separation (Shen Tuo) | Depth and shallowness as standard | Deep: death, no rescue | Shallow: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Retreat (Shen Tui) | Size as standard | Enlarged: death, no rescue | Contracted: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Fixation (Shen Ding) | Deviation as standard | Averted gaze: death, no rescue | Direct gaze: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Mutation (Shen Bian) | Protrusion vs. flattening as standard | Protruding: death, no rescue | Flattened and retracted: danger, rescue possible |
| Pupil Penetration (Guan Tong) | Calm vs. agitated as standard | Agitated: death, no rescue | Calm: danger, rescue possible |
This is the determination for those ordinarily at ease, without worries or anxieties, and their turning point in danger.
Second Type: Those who are ordinarily in labor and toil
A person who is ordinarily in labor and toil has insufficient financial resources, limited support, a declining ancestral estate, harsh circumstances, with many entanglements from the six kin, and truly little assistance from close acquaintances. Worry and brooding constrict the mind and wound the spirit; mental and physical exertion is expended to meet necessities. Internally, there is hidden anxiety serving as a check, which cannot be immediately dissolved; externally, there is pressure creating obstacles, preventing immediate self-reliance. This constitutes an assessment based on factual obstacles.
| Eye-Spirit Type | Criteria for Judgment | Death, No Rescue | Danger, Rescue Possible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spirit Separation (Shen Tuo) | Movement vs. stillness as standard | Still: death, no rescue | Moving: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Retreat (Shen Tui) | Dullness vs. vivacity as standard | Dull: death, no rescue | Vivacious: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Fixation (Shen Ding) | Joy vs. sorrow as standard | Sorrowful: death, no rescue | Joyful and laughing: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Mutation (Shen Bian) | Good vs. evil as standard | With evil thoughts, arrogance and reckless violence: death, no rescue | With good thoughts, peace and prudence: danger, rescue possible |
| Pupil Penetration (Guan Tong) | Left vs. right as standard | Male, left penetration: ominous death, no rescue; Female, right penetration: ominous death, no rescue | Male, right penetration: danger, rescue possible; Female, left penetration: danger, rescue possible |
This is the determination for those ordinarily in labor and toil, with worry and brooding intermingled, and their turning point in danger.
Third Type: Those ordinarily amidst wealth and honor
A person who is ordinarily amidst wealth and honor, whether through a prosperous ancestral estate being a descendant of nobility, or through personal advancement on a career of merit and fame, has a household with ornately decorated, towering mansions befitting prominent standing, and wives and concubines like clouds, with powdered faces and darkened brows. Luxury, arrogance, excess, and dissipation breed unending desires. Externally, there are too many social ties and obligations; internally, management and arrangements are especially demanding. There is no leeway in official duties, and no shortage of social engagements and receptions.
| Eye-Spirit Type | Criteria for Judgment | Death, No Rescue | Danger, Rescue Possible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spirit Separation (Shen Tuo) | Single vs. double as standard | Both eyes separated: death, no rescue | Separation in one eye only: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Retreat (Shen Tui) | Calmness vs. panic as standard | Panicked: death, no rescue | Calm: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Fixation (Shen Ding) | Laughter vs. weeping as standard | Weeping: death, no rescue | Laughing and joyful: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Mutation (Shen Bian) | Humility vs. railing as standard | Forgetting kindness, nursing grudges, railing in anger: death, no rescue | Remembering old ties, leading associates, humble and courteous: danger, rescue possible |
| Pupil Penetration (Guan Tong) | Horizontal vs. vertical as standard | Horizontal penetration through pupil: ominous death, body mutilated | Vertical penetration through pupil: danger, injury and disability |
This is the determination for those ordinarily in wealth and honor, with ample food and clothing, living in comfort and indulgence, and their turning point in danger.
Fourth Type: Those ordinarily with frequent illnesses
A person who ordinarily suffers frequent illnesses, whether from congenital deficiencies with lingering roots of disease, or from acquired damage with chronic ailments of depletion, often manifests outward strength but inner weakness, with insufficient spirit and vitality. Some are gaunt as a rooster resting on a bed, with frail and deficient constitutions. One kind is prolonged without recovery, becoming a chronic weakening disease; another kind drags on over time, becoming an erroneous, recurring illness. There are also those with stubborn temperaments causing pent-up qi, and those with careless eating habits and partiality for certain foods.
| Eye-Spirit Type | Criteria for Judgment | Death, No Rescue | Danger, Rescue Possible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spirit Separation (Shen Tuo) | Remembering the past vs. being composed as standard | Remembering the past: death, no rescue | Composed and at ease: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Retreat (Shen Tui) | Left vs. right as standard | Left retreats, right does not: death, no rescue | Right retreats, left does not: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Fixation (Shen Ding) | Depth as standard | Deep, with hasty temperament: death, no rescue | Shallow, with peaceful temperament: danger, rescue possible |
| Spirit Mutation (Shen Bian) | Silence vs. agitation as standard | Agitated and frantic, railing incessantly: death, no rescue | Gathering spirit in meditation, silent and reserved in speech: danger, rescue possible |
| Pupil Penetration (Guan Tong) | Size as standard | Left eye larger, right eye smaller, with long red threads: death, no rescue | Left eye smaller, right eye larger, with short red threads: danger, rescue possible |
This is the determination for those with illness—whether prolonged chronic illness, or temporary, short-term sickness—and their turning point in danger.
Gong Du's Commentary: The overall chart of ominous danger and peril, along with the four categories listed above, establishes the gradations and turning points of danger, with definite distinctions that allow for decisive judgment. Based on detailed explanation, each item is delineated in sequence as the standard criteria and methods of identification. As for degrees of severity, these are further inferred and determined by the one holding the mirror of observation. Thus, first examine the severity of the facial region, then examine the depth and shallowness of the complexion; determine which region corresponds to which channel system as primary, and which complexion contradicts which seasonal influence. The facts then become naturally clear, and fortune and misfortune naturally understood. This is supplemented by the combined application of eye-spirit, and further differentiated by the contrast between ease and toil, and between wealth and chronic illness. Using the method of multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction, a definitive judgment can be reached as to what degree of danger pertains.
As for the generation and control cycles of the Five Elements, and the seasonal transformations and their propitiousness or unpropitiousness, together with the magnitude, weight, intensity, length, duration, and timing of events and complexions—all are assessed through comprehensive measurement, grasped by intuition and spiritual understanding, and adopted through flexible application. All this I have distilled from extensive experience, through meticulous and profound research spanning more than twenty years, supplementing the inadequacies of earlier practitioners. Those who are attentive to society and circumspect in navigating the world, seeking advantage and avoiding misfortune, ought to explore the subtleties of this chapter. This alone justifies the effort I have invested. May those who read my work examine it with careful attention.
I. The Sovereign (Yin Tang - Between the Eyebrows)
Yin Tang is the foremost critical point of danger—the sovereign ruler of the whole countenance, thus called "the Primordial Chief." A yellow, clear, purple-moist complexion is the correct color, indicating celebration and great fortune. A rosy-cloud, evening-glow complexion with vitality is next in auspiciousness, indicating smooth progress and benefit. A serene, full, unbounded, non-floating, non-slippery quality is the third level of auspiciousness, indicating safety and modest prosperity. In all cases, these signal promotion, advancement, merit, and emolument; for common people, they also indicate abundant financial resources and the arrival of children.
If red-dry complexion appears, it portends danger, ruin and defeat, official litigation and detention, and loss. If red-stagnant complexion appears, it portends mortal danger, imprisonment, injury, and particularly great ruin. Observe actors performing moments of peril on stage—the Yin Tang is invariably painted red, or with a vertical streak extending upward to the Southern Peak. This is consistent with established practice and is not without reason—it represents the red-reddish color appearing at Yin Tang as the advanced sign of mortal danger.
If black-dark complexion appears, it portends imprisonment, cangues and shackles, as well as extraordinary calamities leading to death. If withered-grim complexion appears, it portends severe illness, misfortune, and unforeseen disasters leading to death. If greasy-white complexion appears, it portends the sorrow of cold decline, the malignancy of misgivings and dread, gradually deepening, injuring one's vital energy, depleting one's primordial spirit, leading to the calamity of death. If shadows of black, dark, dusty stagnation are discovered in the four peripheral regions and reach the Yin Tang, this portends straitened circumstances, ties and entanglements in every step, leading to death. If the black, dark, dusty stagnation of the four peripheral regions does not reach the Yin Tang, this portends sorrow and restraint, afflictions of punishment and cold decline—but not to the point of death; merely everything going unpropitiously.
II. Gate of Destiny (Ming Men)
Ming Men lies behind Ting Gong (the auditory palace), in the prominent flesh protuberance. It has an artery in front, internally corresponding to the mother-kidney system, and is the second most critical juncture of danger. According to ancient methods, infants who did not form a proper Ming Men could not survive; during childhood, specifically before the age of three by the old reckoning, and in current times before age twelve, death in infancy was expected. If the Ming Men is low, small, and insufficient, the person is born with weak congenital endowment, and their longevity indicator is likewise weak.
If black-dark, dull-stagnant complexion appears here, that person is certain to die. Even if immediately without illness, there will be sudden syncope and dissolution. For the kidney-channel qi has already expelled and ceased. If withered-grim, dust-soiled greasiness appears, it also portends severe illness that drags on before death. Whenever someone is ill, the Ming Men should be examined in conjunction to determine survival or death. Other complexions at this region do not threaten life.
III. Celestial Gate (Tian Men)
Tian Men lies at the two frontal corners, extending upward to the temple bend and downward to the frontier region—also called Ancestral Qi. Internally, it corresponds to the main channel of the breast pulse line, and is collaterally linked to the liver network.
If withered-grim, greasy complexions of various kinds appear, this portends punishment to important family members and setbacks in affairs, where excessive grief and accumulated indignation lead to illness and crisis. If red-reddish complexion appears, this portends death by sudden disaster, whether halfway through actions encountering bandit harms, or water and fire calamities, with death for profit representing the majority. If black-dark complexion appears, this portends contagion from the six irregular climatic influences and death through pestilence. There are also cases of sudden death through cholera and cramping. And there are also cases of sudden calamity from the hazards of the times. Hence, Ma YI has said: "When the three heavens turn dark, calamity comes from heaven itself." — that is, the two Tian Men and the Tian Ting.
IV. Rear Guard (Hou Wei)
Rear Guard lies below Yin Tang, in the area of Shan Gen (the Root of the Mountain), at the center between where the two eyes confront each other. This region is the bodyguard of the heart, the primary channel of the Dan Zhong, the passage-channel of the Du Mai. It is the foundation of innate constitution and the lock and key exchanged through water and fire.
If a single point of red-reddish, or a single thread of red-reddish appears, this portends the calamity of fire, disasters of conflagration. If red-reddish complexion appears, this portends the danger of hidden harm, death by combat—most often arising from old feuds and framed blame. If black-dark, coagulation-stagnation complexion appears, this portends congenital insufficiencies, endogenous deficiency, wasting weakness, and consumptive fatigue. Or after excessive drinking and indulgence earlier, sudden dissolution afterward. If withered and greasy, gloomy complexions of various kinds appear, this portends deep-seated chronic disease, lingering and prolonged—yet not necessarily death.
V. Shield and Screen (The Two Cheekbones)
Shield and Screen refers to the two cheekbones, also called State Seal and also Middle Treasury. Internally, the Triple Burner channel, which screens off and drains pathogenic and filthy qi downward, resides here.
If red-reddish complexion appears, in severe cases this portends overturning ruin and death by treading into danger—after craving heavy power and emolument, and being enticed by rich wealth and profit into perilous places. In milder cases, this portends imprisonment and detention, punishments, and cold decline because grief and indignation intertwine, external and internal pressures and stress give rise to major illness and heavy calamity, resulting in mortal danger. In the mildest cases, it portends mourning clothes—mourning death in the family—punishment of wife and children, hemorrhoidal fistula and bloody aura, cold decline and loss of wealth.
If black, withered, dark, grim complexions appear, in severe cases this portends unforeseeable calamities and ominous injury. There are cases of primary and direct harm in the loss of power and influence, and cases of collateral harm in the guilt of near ones. In milder cases, this portends imprisonment, illness, punishments and defeats. Other complexions are inconsequential and not perilous.
VI. Junction and Intercourse (San Yang)
Junction and Intercourse lies under the brows, above the eyes. Internally, it belongs to the connecting arrangement of the liver and lungs—the channel of intercourse—and runs half in the liver and half in the lung channels. The liver governs ascending order on the left, the lungs govern descending order on the right, making this the place of ventilation and the hub of ascending and descending.
If withered-grim complexion appears, weeping and affliction damage the household; morbidity and obstruction from closed channels also occur. If red-dry complexion appears, prominence of female children. If blue-greasy complexion appears, a prominency of male children. This region is not averse to these colors.
If black-reddish complexion appears, it is the most taboo color there. One might lose his virtue and honorable character and incur enmity leading to unforeseen dangerous harms. A second pattern features a frantic contest for power and profit breeding jealousies leading to assassinations. A third pattern features wantonness, loss of vitality—all that damages spirit and drains the brain—such to lead to sudden demise through self-murder. Therefore, Ma Yi has said: "When black veils the Tai Yang (the main sun), even Lü Yi (a peerless physician) cannot save." — This refers to the Tai Yang within the San Yang region.
VII. Three Yin (Cheng Jiang region; underneath the eyes)
Three Yin corresponds under the two eyes, presenting the fleshy pads known as Du Chuang silk-worm (the lower eyelid covering the Orbicularis oculi). It belongs internally to the Liu vessel/network, while the left branch intersects with the Water point of the Leg-Shao Yang line, being a direct connection of the branch line.

VIII. Precious Granary (Ren Zhong)
Precious Granary was originally called Ren Zhong—the flow through earth furrows in flowing a circuit there.[In reality where guillies divide also go communication.] Beyond skin insides it goes the Stomach's yang structures. The Precious Portal is that prominency call on nasal bridge directly: it established as main possession/personal property ridge estate spec Treasury of the Earth (toad holding wealth by nose hill Top in Earth region) linked internal direct network primary spleen valley moisture links all ownership/port investments.

XI. Dark Warrior (Xuan Wu)
The Dark Warrior extends diagonal outward downward below the Hall-Men (rape-gate transverse under-eyelids toward-cheeks external bone): inside affiliated ribs flanks main later organ-net tie linking the liver system mutual tri burner connection.

If red-black complexion is observed, it indicates deep concerns and great dangers. There are hidden causes of misfortune and latent crises; it is inauspicious in all four seasons. In severe cases, death; in较轻 cases, disability, with repeated setbacks. Moreover, during the winter water season, it is doubly ominous—severe cases may lead to bodily mutilation or death.
If withered, greasy, or miserable hues appear, with visible muscle striations running obliquely, it indicates more loss than gain, with worry and frustration. If red-black hues appear with obliquely traversing muscle striations, it indicates peril, resentment, losses, disputes, punishments, afflictions, and many obstacles. All cases of visible striation marks do not portend death, but rather persistent worry and sorrow.
XII. The Pass of Generation and Transformation
The Pass of Generation and Transformation lies below the Mercury Star (mouth area), between it and the philtrum (承浆). Internally, it corresponds to the bladder and uterus systems.
If red-crimson complexion appears, it indicates stagnation of damp-heat and wind-dampness, manifesting as illness. If red, crimson, black, and dull hues merge like clusters of clouds, it indicates venereal diseases such as syphilis, leading to a collapsed nasal bridge, hoarse voice, and eventual death through拖延. In lesser cases, it indicates strange and rare diseases that prove incurable.
If black, dull, and stagnant complexion appears, it indicates death by drowning during voyages, or death by alcohol intoxication. In spring and summer seasons, black and dull hues are more ominous; in autumn and winter, stagnant and dull hues are more severe. In milder cases, there may be rescue from water disasters—perilous but not fatal; chronic illnesses may find treatment—prolonged but not fatal.
Gong Du says: The Five Body Types correspond to the Five Elements—Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. Where there is a pure, singular form, nobility, wealth, and longevity predominantly follow. Where there are combined forms, fortune and poverty, longevity and premature death, toil and ease each have their respective manifestations, with outcomes that vary and are complex. This stems from excess or deficiency. As for configurations of one primary and two secondary forms, two forms contending, or three forms coalescing—these mixed compositions are numerous and further divide into mutual generation and employment, mutual conquest and transformation, as well as generation without employment, and conquest without transformation. These are herein classified as follows. Though the Five Forms may seem inconsequential, they are in fact profoundly functional.
I. Wood Form 🌱
The Wood configuration is characterized by elegance, slenderness, height, and uprightness, with abundant vitality—this is the correct Wood form. If slender but collapsed and oblique, short and curved without uprightness, and lacking vitality, this is the incorrect Wood form.
Wood is the most honored of the Five Elements. Its trigram is Zhen (震), its tone is Jue (角), its season is spring, and its qi ascends. Thus it is the first generated number of the prenatal order. "The Emperor emerges from Zhen" refers to this. According to the prenatal arrangement, the Zhen trigram occupies the position of Chou and Yin (丑寅), signifying that Earth opened at Chou and humanity arose at Yin. Hence, those of pure Wood form attain fame without power, or renown exceeding their authority. Some enjoy fame during their lifetime, while others gain recognition posthumously.
When the Wood form reaches its purest essence, it attains immortal status, transcending even emperors—this is the highest nobility visible in form, the first rank in physiognomy. Laozi, whose form resembled withered wood—lean, gaunt, with pronounced sinews—transformed into pure yang. Lü Dongbin moved as lightly as a crane—tall, lean, and refined. These two are clear evidence.
Literature that stirs the ages and arts worthy of reverence emerge predominantly from the Wood form, with fewer from the Fire form. Secondarily, commoners who stand proud before princes, miraculous deeds that leave a lasting fragrance, high moral character, and natural brilliance—these also come mostly from the Wood form. This is the principle behind refined nobility and scholarly renown. They establish discourse and cultivate virtue, rather than pursuing power and wealth—this is evident. All who wield power possess Wood as a secondary element; all who enjoy fame possess pure Wood as their primary form.
II. Water Form 🌊
The Water configuration is round, fleshy, clear, and substantial, with melodious, lingering voice and upright sitting like a nailed stone—this is the correct Water form. If round and fleshy but drifting and unstable, with harsh, short voice and swaying gait, this is the incorrect Water form.
Pure Water forms attain Buddhist attainment, also transcending emperors. They may become emperors of great blessing, or nobles, ministers, and generals of authority—or regionally as usurpers establishing hegemonic domains. Throughout history, those of authority and nobility have come from the Metal and Water forms. Water-form figures hold power with abundant blessings; Metal-form figures hold power with great toil.
The Water form's trigram is Kan (坎), its tone is Yu (羽), its season is winter, and its qi is storage. Hence the He Tu and Luo Shu state, "Heaven generates Water first; Earth completes it sixth." One is Kan Water; six is Qian Metal. This is the basis for Metal-Water forms attaining the highest nobility and honor. Foremost are Buddhist attainments, next are emperors, then nobles, ministers, and generals—wealth, nobility, longevity, all emerge from the correct pure Water form.
III. Metal Form ⚔️
The Metal configuration is clear, distinctive, square, and straight, with prominent cheekbones and horn-like angles, firm, fair, and substantial—this is the correct Metal form. If square but common, cheekbones prominent but turbid, neither firm nor fair—this is the incorrect Metal form.
Pure Metal forms attain great nobility with heavy authority. They are emperors who expand territories, establish dynasties, and build achievements. Next are nobles, ministers, and generals—and the famous generals and scholar-generals of history whose deeds endure for ten thousand generations. Martial nobility predominates; civil nobility is rarer.
The Metal form's trigram is Dui (兑), its tone is Shang (商), its season is autumn, and its qi is harvest. It governs the world's austere, killing qi—unyielding and brave in action. It gives life to aquatic creatures with armor, half-land and half-water, half-rising and half-sinking, firm and combative—hence it produces military commanders.
If the five features are clear and distinctive, and the five mountains are sharp and prominent, it indicates majesty reaching ten thousand miles and fame spreading across nine provinces. Yue Wumu (岳武穆) with sword-shaped eyebrows and Metal form, Guan Zhuangmiao (关壮缪) with protruding cheeks like layered walls, Guo Fenyang (郭汾阳) with a forehead square like an overturned liver, Ban Dingyuan (班定远) with square cheeks and swallow jaw—these are all Metal forms, and clear evidence.
The highest among them are founding emperors. For example, Emperor Taizu of Song with prominent cheekbones and layered jaw, and Emperor Taizu of Ming with a square chin oriented properly. Next are feudal lords and marquises; then those who achieved fame through military pacification of rebellion. I have examined the famous generals and scholar-generals throughout history—most emerged from pure Metal forms.
IV. Earth Form ⛰️
The Earth configuration is thick, substantial, and deeply structured, with hidden turbidity, upright demeanor, and slow speech pattern—this is the correct Earth form. If thick and substantial with deep structure but歪斜, high-pitched voice, and hasty speech—this is the incorrect Earth form.
The Earth form governs wealth. Earth generates wealth because it gives birth to all things. Pure Earth forms indicate wealth without nobility. The Earth form's trigram is Kun (坤), its tone is Gong (宫), its season spans the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and full months—it is the mother of all trigrams. Hence the He Luo places it in the central palace's Bright Hall, governing the four directions. This is why it signifies wealth without nobility—it is the source of all generation and transformation.
Throughout history, the great wealthy configurations have predominantly emerged from the Earth form. Its form is deep, substantial, and encompassing, bearing thick blessings. Shi Chong with six broad palaces, and Tao Zhu with a hanging gallbladder-shaped central peak (nose)—these are clear evidence.
When the five mountains are thick and substantial, the six palaces full and even, the inner granaries full and prominent, and outer granaries wide and protrusive—this should indicate wealth rivaling a nation and fame filling the world. Next comes wealth rivaling princes with fame filling major cities. Then wealth leading a prefecture with fame spreading throughout the region. Most emerge from the pure Earth form.
V. Fire Form 🔥
The Fire configuration is convex and protrusive with a peak at top, pointed above and wide below, with piercing spirit and hasty voice—this is the correct Fire form. Convex and protrusive with a peak, pointed above and wide below, but with declining spirit and harmonized voice—this is the incorrect Fire form.
When a pure Fire form is achieved, it represents the ascending flame phenomenon—also the noble minister of wealth and rank, a general in the field and premier at court. However, such individuals experience much toil and peril. Though they flourish, it does not endure; or they succeed without proper closure. The Fire form is rarely seen and least common among all forms. Throughout history, only a few Fire-form figures have flourished. Defeats far outnumber successes.
For example, Ma Zhou of the Tang dynasty had a kite-shouldered, red complexioned Fire form; Kou Zhun of the Song dynasty had a head pointed like a brush (Fire form). One became a general during a revival; the other a premier through a desperate gamble. These are evidence of the Fire form's manifestations.
The Fire form's trigram is Li (离), its tone is Zhi (徵), its season is summer, and its qi is growth. "Li" means beauty. With abundant qi and proud nature, talent is fully exposed—neither harmonized nor restrained. There is the resentment of those above and jealousy of those below. Hence more defeats than gains.
Pure Fire forms rise from extraordinary hardship and difficult circumstances, overcoming obstacles to achieve outstanding merit in the face of grave dangers. Thus, sudden prosperity does not persist, and descendants cannot inherit. Consequently, Fire-form mixed types are numerous, resulting in poverty and failure.
The highest Fire forms achieve sage and worthy status, establishing discourse and law for eternal fame. Next are noble ministers of wealth and rank—generals in the field and premiers at court—who achieve success but face reputational ruin. Then come middle-ranking and lower-ranking wealth and status—full of worry and dissatisfaction. Finally, there are those whose outcomes vary unpredictably, reputations rise and fall, and they die in melancholy. More failures than successes—this is the established conclusion for the Fire form.
I. Wood Form 🌱
The Wood form inherently belongs to the configuration of refined nobility without authority. Surveying people of each form, it comprises approximately 40%. Pure Wood follows the aforementioned discussion. Mixed forms involve weight and significance relationships; the key principle lies in clear distinction between primary and secondary elements—whether they generate or conquer, with mutual control and transformation, making them commendable.
If primary and secondary elements contend in equal proportion, and generation does not transform, nor conquest transform—then there is nothing to recommend. Though the five features and five mountains are distinctive, with exceptional intelligence and extraordinary talent, ultimate fortune does not arrive. Even should opportunity arise and success follow, there will be toil, setbacks, and imperfections—or other deficiencies.
When Wood and Metal are equal, Wood and Fire equal, Wood and Water equal, or Wood and Earth equal, all are assessed as mixed outcomes—success and failure vary, restricted by distraction, and do not represent configurations of profound blessing and peaceful enjoyment.
| Mixed Type | Relationship | Fortune/Misfortune | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood form with Metal | More Wood, less Metal | Wealth and nobility | Wood without Metal, though noble, lacks authority; Wood as primary with Metal employed—one refined noble, one authoritative noble, combining for great nobility with heavy authority |
| Wood form with Water | Mutual generation and aid | Civil nobility predominant | Political power and life-death authority; doubly flourishes in prosperous eras, diminished in decline |
| Wood form with Fire | Wood-Fire spiritual communion | Refined nobility without authority | Brilliant talent, marvelous skill, heightened intelligence, highest capability with greatest toil; some attain sage or worthy status, others achieve fame with light authority |
| Wood form with Earth | Mutual restriction and transformation | Prefectural and district governors | At minimum, local honor and renown—medium-scale wealth, stable and deliberate, wealth exceeding nobility |
II. Water Form 🌊
The Water form inherently constitutes the configuration of great wealth and nobility with profound blessings. Surveying people of each form, it comprises approximately 18%. Pure Water follows the aforementioned discussion. Mixed types involve weight and significance relationships; the key principle lies in clear distinction between primary and secondary elements—(then it is a useful character.
If primary and secondary contend in equal proportion, though generation occurs without transformation, nor conquest transforms—then nothing is commendable. Though five features are clear and moist, and five mountains thick, they are assessed at reduced rank. Even should opportunity bring success, there will be constraint, toil, and resentment without proper closure—or deficiencies.
When Water-Wood are equal, Water-Fire equal, Water-Metal equal, or Water-Earth equal, all are assessed as configurations interrupted by setbacks, with floating vanity and dissipation—possessing blessings one cannot enjoy, or lacking blessings to enjoy entirely. Even born to noble families with abundant enterprises, deficiencies exist with toil, punishment, afflictions, and entanglements producing lingering regret.
| Mixed Type | Relationship | Fortune/Misfortune | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water form with Wood | Mutual generation and transformation | Noble with great fame, wealthy with connected fields | Internal assistance without bullying; external support without restraint. Capable and resourceful, achieving remarkable results |
| Water form with Fire | Complementary interaction (Water-Fire balance) | Superlative intelligence, extraordinary skill | Some become sages or worthies despite adverse fate; some leave discourse or writings, living in poverty. Others, crafty and treacherous—outcomes vary between success and failure |
| Water form with Metal | Generation with support | Great nobility, astonishing achievements | Pillars of the realm; martial authority in civil posts predominant, civil authority in martial posts rarer. Enduring, patient, with unyielding ambitions |
| Water form with Earth | Mutual conquest and transformation | Sincere with abundant blessings | Noble authority accompanied by wealth; wealth doubled with long life; reduced noble rank but also long life; ample sustenance with leisurely fortune |
III. Metal Form ⚔️
The Metal form represents great wealth and nobility with heavy authority—a configuration of courage, toil, and achievement. Surveying each form, it comprises approximately 20%.
If pure Metal form, it indicates a brilliant founding emperor, or a capable reviving emperor. Next are nobles, ministers, and generals with civil and martial versatility, enduring toil with action, achieving particular merit in military affairs, doubly thriving in chaotic eras.
Mixed types have their respective weight and relationships; the key principle lies in clear distinction between primary and secondary—these represent configurations of grand utility. If primary and secondary contend in equal proportion, though generation is restricted and conquest is also restricted—then nothing is commendable. Though the five features are clear and authoritative, and the five mountains peak-like and sharp, they are assessed at reduced rank. Even with fortunate success, there will be setbacks and dangers, never full achievement—or complete collapse.
When Metal-Wood equal, Metal-Water equal, Metal-Fire equal, or Metal-Earth equal, all are assessed as suddenly successful then failed, suddenly benefited then harmed—perilous without peace, dangerous with many disasters. Even born to hereditary noble bloodlines, there are grudges and betrayals: provoked above, envied below—external glory and profit paired with internal afflictions, dying in resentment and indignation.
| Mixed Type | Relationship | Fortune/Misfortune | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal form with Wood | Mutual conquest and transformation | Talented yet brave, brilliant yet proud | Great ambitions with endurance; adept at bold maneuvers and risk. Military ranks, or empty civil titles; achieves heroic deeds yet fond of contention; holds sway with action |
| Metal form with Water | Mutual generation and transformation | Wealth and nobility with abundant blessings | In chaotic times, martial nobility controlling political power; in prosperous times, civil posts commanding military authority. Fortune arrived through timing, flourishing with opportunity |
| Metal form with Fire | Metal Smelting into Sword | Chaotic times bring sudden prosperity | Braves danger and peril to achieve great merit; either extraordinary nobility or extraordinary wealth—both limitless. In prosperous times, reduced rank but still renowned with authority |
| Metal form with Earth | Mutual generation and transformation | Minor wealth and nobility | Either wealth exceeds nobility, or fame exceeds authority. Those so characterized are cautious and rigid, stable and deliberate; doubly auspicious in prosperous eras, reduced in chaotic times, with longevity |
IV. Earth Form ⛰️
The Earth form governs wealth without nobility—a configuration of abundant blessings and longevity. Surveying each form, it comprises approximately 15%.
When Earth form is pure, it indicates exceptional wealth—wealth rivaling a nation, or at minimum leading a prefecture or county. Mixed types have their weight relationships; the key principle lies in clear distinction between primary and secondary, granting wealth, longevity, and enjoyment of blessings.
If primary and secondary contend equally, neither the generating nor the conquering element proves auspicious. Even with conforming five features and five mountains, assessment drops in rank. Naturally, those whose features and mountains do not conform will experience dissipation and failure.
When Earth-Wood equally matched, Earth-Water equally matched, Earth-Metal equally matched, or Earth-Fire equally matched—despite inherited estates with connected fields, there will be losses and destruction. Some suffer catastrophic floods or fires; others incur the depredations of thieves and anti-state insurgents. At lesser degrees, relatives or clan members encroach; kin turn against kin; wives and concubines scheme in secret; children prove unfilial or despicable. At still lesser degrees: punishment of wife and harm to children, accompanied by illness.
| Mixed Type | Relationship | Fortune/Misfortune | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earth form with Wood | Mutual restriction and transformation | Wealthy gentry scholar, prominent merchants | Local renown; wealth exceeding nobility; cautious, bound by propriety, seek achievement; moderately intelligent |
| Earth form with Water | Nourishment and livelihood support | Minor wealth and nobility | Ample clothing and food; rigid and penny-wise; sincere and faithful; average learning with literary distinction; long-established comfortable families |
| Earth form with Metal | Generation with employment | Medium and lower-class nobility | Straightforward and sincere; deliberate, stable perception, safety without danger |
| Earth form with Fire | Generation without transformation | Toilsome comings and goings, fame and profit unfulfilled | Overcautious yet greedy; clever schemes backfire; sincere yet foolish; hides ailments amid concealed harms—ceaseless annoyance. There are also ordinary nominal posts with sufficient sustenance, but wives suffer punishment and children harmed |
V. Fire Form 🔥
The Fire form inherently constitutes a configuration of superlative intelligence, toil, and risk—nobility through hazardous enterprise. Surveying each form, it comprises approximately 7%, the rarest among all forms.
As a pure Fire form, it represents great nobility—commander in the field in times of external campaign and premier in the court—alternating outside and inside. Secondarily, it represents fortified vassals and important garrison commanders with effective authority. For mixed types: of course, the clear distinction between primary and secondary indicators makes it functional. Its degrees hinge entirely upon mutual generation and conquest, mutual control and transformation, by which wealth, poverty, nobility, baseness, longevity, premature death, ease, or toil are determined.
If primary and secondary contend equally, neither does the generating element benefit nor does the conquering element help. Even with famed features forming distinctive lineaments of the five peaks thrust up to extraordinary heights(profiles of importance), assessment is reduced due significance deficiencies. If both primary quality and stature components lean weak or unfavorable—collapse and danger ensure. When Fire-Wood hold exact proportions of fifty-fifty, or Fire-Water, Fire-Metal, or Fire-Earth evenly half throughout—inherit wealthy potentials beyond ordinary endowment(lives remaining honorable possibilities. superlative natural excellence unique intellect; natural brilliance and extraordinary skill wherever plied(-; though marred dangers ing) are often attended instead potential criticisms and unforgiving environment(s—Such Even one with est succeed total left no scattered spoil thoroughness to destroy despite talent unmatched once successful eventually lands catastrophic defeat.
| Mixed Type | Relationship | Fortune/Misfortune | Explanation |

Gong Du says: The alignment of the Five Body Types with Five Elements has this rule-standing framework taken as the core, principle (norm) as Fundamental within-the discipline of physiognomy's first rung (= basis foundation startup procedure-standard). Having laidprimary structure such physical guideline、 proced to segment coordinate combining selected governing timeframe verifications (luck limit/life periods), mentally inspect 精神 awareness verve integrity and blood vital modes( vigor), spirit actual tone, examination then verifying its various situational colour-air. Identify variance timbres registered distinction in his vocal sonic spectrum to correspond/produce integrated appreciation of same criterion… Among with it making correct eventual potential/bench rankings magnitude achievement levels one achiever; besides they employ regular年份 and its moment (年度 passage units seasons interplay run time fortune events—indicators auspicious on ill) spec prior experience/herald marks fully grasping—This正是真正的面目師可的正則道筌。 Such training we hold form = classical official authentic positive orthodox.至此(这便是正宗命閱旨範相法的延然妥著p核心根尖為意。)
If one rigidly adheres to which bone, which mole, which wrinkle, which scar, or how the palm and feet appear, these are all partial claims of minor schools—insufficient as guiding principles and lacking reliable verification.
Therefore, when the pure and unified physical constitution is mentioned, its bearer is either an immortal or a Buddha, a sage or a worthy, wealthy or noble, long-lived or blessed—there is never a case where a pure and unified pattern results in a person of poverty, lowliness, or uselessness. When the constitution becomes a combined pattern, then there are those who are rich or poor, noble or base, long-lived or short-lived, toiling or at ease, auspicious or inauspicious, afflicted or prosperous. One should determine this by combining the Five Organs, the Five Peaks, the Six Mansions, the Three Talents, the voice and spirit, temperament and complexion.
After more than twenty years of investigation, I have also identified patterns of one primary element combined with two secondary elements. For example, a Wood constitution combined with Metal and Fire, or Wood combined with Metal and Earth, or Wood combined with Metal and Water, or Wood combined with Water and Earth, or Wood combined with Water and Fire, or Wood combined with Fire and Earth. Likewise, a Metal constitution combined with Wood and Fire, or Metal combined with Wood and Water, or Metal combined with Wood and Earth, or Metal combined with Water and Earth, or Metal combined with Fire and Earth, or Metal combined with Water and Fire. The rest can be inferred by analogy. These are cases where two configurations merge to form a single pattern. I shall not detail them all here. But those who employ these methods should, based on all the relevant interrelations, clarify the primary cause, apply addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to strike a balance, and judge with intuitive comprehension—then naturally there will be marvelous and accurate responses.
One must also examine the attitude of the spirit, the clarity or turbidity of the voice, the moisture or stagnation of the complexion, and apply them in combination—only then will the essential techniques be grasped. Furthermore, one should correlate the primary calamity, the secondary calamity, and the corroborating calamity with the person's fortune periods. Then, using the sharp and exposed features to verify an earlier onset, and the calm and harmonious features to verify a later onset, the entire calculation—through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—will yield a firm grasp and certainty. The profound subtlety lies entirely within these few words. If one can refine this through careful experience and devoted deliberation, one will naturally achieve unique mastery.
Moreover, one must consider the Way of Heaven, the topography of the land, the circumstances of the times, personal temperament, social status, environment, and intellect in order to arrive at a flexible application of the correct method. Therefore, physiognomy cannot be reduced to a single rigid formula. If one adheres to a single rigid formula, that is only the principle of the art, not its living application.
The core ideas of this section can be summarized at several levels:
First: The dual-system judgment system for danger based on "physical constitution" and "complexion." Gong Du clearly divides ominous dangers into two categories: one arisesfrom the physical constitution (inherent defects in bone structure and facial features), and the other from complexion (postnatal manifestations of internal organ qi and blood on the face). Between the two, complexion responses hold the more important position. This reflects the fundamental logic of traditional Chinese physiognomy: the physical form is the static "destiny" (ming), while the complexion is the dynamic "fortune" (yun). Even if the physical constitution carries dangers, as long as the complexion shows no ominous signs and the current period's fortune is still auspicious, actual danger will not materialize.
Second: The viscera-correspondence system of the twelve dangerous locations. Each dangerous location on the face corresponds to a specific viscus and meridian: Yintang (印堂, glabella) corresponds to the Heart; Mingmen (命门, pre-auricular mass) corresponds to the Kidneys; Tianmen (天门, forehead region) corresponds to the mammary vessels; Houwei (后卫, behind the ears) corresponds to the Governing Vessel, the Gallbladder, and Lungs; Pingfan (屏藩, cheekbones) corresponds to the Sanjiao; Jiaoguan (交关, the temple-emperor junction) corresponds to the Liver and Lungs; Sanyin (三阴, below the eyes) corresponds to the Liver collaterals and Kidneys; Baocang (宝仓, philtrum) corresponds to the Stomach and Lungs; Qianwei (前卫, near the cheeks) corresponds to the Pericardium; Baoque (宝阙, nose tip) corresponds to the Spleen; Xuanwu (玄武, nasal region) corresponds to Liver collaterals and Sanjiao; Shenghuaguan (生化关, mental crease area) corresponds to the Bladder and Uterus. This system inherits the visceral manifestation theory of the Inner Canon, treating the face as the "external mirror" of the internal organs.
Third: The theoretical framework of six colors and climatic generation-domination. Six dangerous complexions (red, black, withered, gloomy, greasy, white) each have their own Five Element attribution, which differ by the principles of "mutual court" and "mutual harm" in the four seasons. For example, the color red is Fire-natured, and when seen in summer (when Fire prevails) disaster brings a lighter response; black pertains to Water, heavy in winter. This is the application of Five Element seasonal generation-domination relations to ocular diagnosis.
Fourth: The "spirit before color" principle of the five types of god/demon-eye. Gong Du maintains that changesin the eyes hold greater diagnostic value and are also more subtle than ocular colors. Each of the five distinct eye-gazes—spirit withdrawal/pre-sun, spirit retreat, spirit sedation, spirit metamorphosis, and pupil spike—is differentiated on careful observation behaviors. True discernment, however, cannot be glemed only through specific instruction on subtle behavior anomalies but is instead through one's sustained viewing and the identification for patterns immediately. Granted these approaches align with (confined) conduct descriptions outlining daily progressive changes (which might provoke long glances straight) linked characteristic mind -wander (practices). Whereas contemporary neurologists in fact employ assessments of mental vitality with profound, evocative behaviors centered upon lucidy not explicitly memory, similarly. (Following note reader compliance under unnecessary meta impossible... end final.)If one rigidly adheres to which bone, which mole, which wrinkle, which scar, or how the hand and foot appear, these are all partial claims of minor schools—insufficient as guiding principles and lacking reliable verification.
