Chapter 3 of 14
公笃相法
A person's appearance is predetermined by previous life's karma, unknowable to the worldly. Unless through uncommon mystical transmission, how could ordinary people explain it by mere speculation?
Appearance has predestination from previous lives—that is, causes from former times and effects in the present—and should be determined by the physical form formed through receiving the qi of heaven and earth. This speaks of blessings rather than intellect, so when qi is pure, the form is pure; when qi is turbid, the form is turbid. There is a method for foreseeing the future—physiognomy alone—and it is by no means mere speculation that can exhaust its subtleties.
Emperor Shun had double pupils in his eyes, and ultimately accepted Yao's abdication to ascend the imperial throne. Chong'er (Duke Wen of Jin) had fused ribs, and indeed laid the foundation for Jin's hegemony.
Those who differ from ordinary people are certainly noble. Only with an extraordinary constitution can one accomplish extraordinary deeds—this saying is indeed true. These are classic examples of the extraordinary.
The Stone Chamber Dan Script, forget not the transmission of my path. The immortal secret formulae, handed to Chen Tuan (Xiyi). The bones determine the glory and decline of a lifetime; complexion governs the fortune and misfortune of one's years.
Physiognomy is part of the Way, and only by jointly considering bone structure and complexion is it orthodox. Bone structure governs the long term; complexion governs the short term. Physical form arises from acquired influences; complexion communicates with the innate. Employed together, these are the key to physiognomy, used to determine a person's fortune and misfortune, good and ill.
When the Three Sections are equal and balanced, one has boundless food and clothing for life. When the Five Peaks face toward the center, wealth in this life will surely flourish. The chin is the Earth Pavilion, governing the scale of achievement in later years. The nose is the Saturn Star, governing the fortunes of middle age. A broad and square forehead is the foundation of wealth and nobility; a thin, hollow, and sunken one is the remnant of poverty and lowliness.
This is a general outline. One must further examine each part in detail, distinguishing its form and quality, and not be confined to trivial isolated features in making a blanket judgment. There are inner and outer aspects, true and false manifestations. Therefore, assessing a person requires careful scrutiny down to the finest detail before applying the method to determine compliance.
Clear eyes and elegant brows surely mark a clever and handsome child. Turbid spirit and short breath mark a man of poverty and premature death.
Those whose clarity is dull and stagnant are also foolish; those whose elegance is short and hasty also die young. One must weigh the true against the false. Turbidity indicates lowliness, but Earth-type individuals need not avoid turbidity—they may instead become wealthy. Short breath indicates premature death, but those with tortoise-breath deep concealment instead live long. One must also discuss whether the physical constitution is appropriate—this is the correct discourse.
A prominent天庭 (forehead center) —youthful wealth and honor may be expected. A square and rounded地阁 (chin) —late-life glory and prosperity are certain. Gaze that is level and upright indicates a man of integrity with a calm heart. A cold, mocking smile indicates one whose schemes run deep within.
One must also check whether the bones and flesh of each part are proportioned. When the chin is thick yet the person suffers loneliness—the mouth corners have disordered wrinkles. The eyes are connected to the liver; the liver is the firm viscus, related to the nerves, thus one can observe one's good and evil intentions, and the behavior of firmness, gentleness, loyalty, and treachery.
A full and large nose tip —the heart is peaceful and free of malice. Flesh growing horizontally across the face —the temperament is obstinate and fierce.
These two are easily observed, and those navigating the world should pay attention to them. Those with large noses are sincere and generous to others; those with horizontal flesh are stubborn, narrow-minded, and intolerant.
Wisdom arises from the skin and hair; joy and suffering relate to the hands and feet.
Neither of these should be taken as fixed rules, for they often fail to verify. I record these words here for the wise to test—this awaits the changes of the Heavenly Way, being the time of the Five Dynasties.
A low hairline and coarse skin —in the end, foolishness and stubbornness appear. Fine finger joints and plump feet backs —elegance and refinement are certain.
A low hairline portends harm to one's parents; coarse skin portends toil. Here it is called foolishness and stubbornness—I know not what is intended. Fine fingers indicate intelligence; plump feet indicate wealth and early death. Here it is called elegance and refinement—again I know not what is intended. Perhaps the Heavenly Way of that time verified thus? Or perhaps the local terrain verified thus?
The rich naturally have sturdy bodies, yet beware of flesh that sags. The noble certainly appear extraordinary, yet one must examine for inner turbidity.
The latter eight characters were added by me. Those with sagging flesh resemble the sturdy; those with turbid inner qualities resemble the extraordinary. One must certainly investigate the true from the false, and not rely solely on external appearance to determine wealth, nobility, longevity, or early death.
Noble officials of the South are refined and elevated, mostly marked by a prominent and protruding天庭 (forehead center). Dukes and marquises of the North achieve great nobility, all through the chin facing upward toward the center.
Physiognomy has methods that account for regional terrain. Those who accord with their terrain are noble; those who oppose their terrain are exceptionally noble—meaning rare.
A hunchback with a round face —Southerners become wealthy and content. A golden voice with a small frame —Westerners achieve nobility and longevity.
The hunchback belongs to Fire; the round face belongs to Metal. Fire refines Metal into implements; abundant Metal with little Fire is auspicious. If Fire and Metal are equally matched and contend, it is inauspicious. The West originally belongs to Metal, prized for solidity, so a small frame is not prohibited. These are additions from my own experience.
River-like eyes and a sea-like mouth —one enjoys a thousand zhong of emolument. Iron-countenance and sword eyebrows —authority extends ten thousand li.
These are all extraordinary configurations of the male physiognomy. River-like eyes speaks of their length—Sima Zhongda could see his own ears, and thus founded the Jin enterprise. Sea-like mouth speaks of their breadth—Guo Ziyi could fit a fist in his mouth and restored the Tang dynasty. Iron-face speaks of firmness—such people are talented, thus Bao Zheng became a model official. Sword eyebrows speaks of being long and angled upward—such people are brave, thus Yue Fei became the famed general of the Southern Song. These four are all cases of combining civil and military authority to achieve great deeds.
A dragon head and phoenix neck —a woman with these must match a king. A tiger forehead and swallow jaw —a man with these is certain to be enfeoffed as general or minister.
Dragon head means protruding bones; phoenix neck means a long neck. A woman born with these, though not beautiful, will certainly have abundant talent, virtue, and fortune. Tiger forehead refers to the rounded protrusion of the Fuxi bone; swallow jaw means the two cheeks are square and broad, forming a tripod—three-cornered stance with the forehead. Ban Chao had this configuration, achieving great nobility and leaving a celebrated name.
Among the secrets of physiognomy, longevity versus early death is the most difficult. Not solely the philtrum, but the spirit alone determines it.
Physiognomy has specific methods for wealth, nobility, poverty, and lowliness. Only longevity and early death have no fixed method, for physical form, spirit, and voice quality all bear relation. This says spirit and qi account for the majority, so one cannot determine by physical form alone.
Long eyes bearing luster within —one who ascends to the heavenly court. Spirit floating without light —a guest who departs early to the underworld.
Since ancient times, immortals, Buddhas, sages, and worthies all possess true light within. Some say cold brilliance with authority is "luster"; some say luminous radiance and bright clarity is "luster." Therefore, spirit floating without root, and light dim and blurred, are all configurations of premature death. This applies after sixteen and before thirty-six. Details are discussed later.
Skin tight over the face —at thirty, asking about longevity is indeed difficult. Flesh color floating and light —how can one pass forty-nine?
Tight skin indeed indicates lack of longevity, and one struggles to reach thirty. But there are solitary, bitter, cold, and lowly people who exceed thirty. Floating flesh color indeed indicates lack of longevity, yet there are also those without children or descendants who pass beyond thirty-six. Therefore one should use other features as reference. This is because the method acknowledges that weakness in one area may be compensated by strength in another.
Three creases on the neck —encountering times of decline, one nonetheless shows increasing vigor.
This is one sign of longevity. But one must check whether there are ominous spirits, qi, or lines. Though the primal qi is ample, some die violently in middle age and cannot complete their natural span.
A single bone in the middle of the neck —though afflicted by illness and adversity, in the end there is no danger or obstruction.
This is the Baihui bone, indicating nobility and having a root of longevity. Though afflicted with illness and adversity, one will not die prematurely.
When appearance suddenly changes, encountering good fortune, one may infer misfortune. When complexion turns moist and lustrous, though in poverty, one may adjudge certain development.
Whenever spirit is disordered and form changes while in favorable circumstances, these are the harbingers of calamity. The greater the development, the greater the risk of loss. Thus one should decline honor and take low position to avoid it. When moisture within can gather, yellow and purple may emerge, so favorable encounters follow. These two are opposite yet correspond.
Frequently afflicted with illness and adversity —only because the life palace (minggong) is dim and clouded. Frequently encountering auspicious events —because the hall of fortune is moist and lustrous.
After illness there will be a dedicated section with detailed discussion. The life palace (minggong) is the mountain root (nose bridge), which is one part concerning illness. This contains the governing qi of the Du meridian and bile for digestion. Thus those who are often ill first show bluish-black color at this palace. The hall of fortune is the gateway of social interaction and the place of right and wrong—not a designation of auspiciousness. The hall of fortune may be an error for the Yintang (between the brows).
Deeply sunken tear chambers with moth-eaten flesh growing horizontally —harming countless children and grandchildren.
One indicates damp illness resulting in water qi rising upward. One indicates injury to yin causing insomnia and stagnation. There are also those whose children establish themselves successfully.
A pointed and pendant nose tip with a flat and full philtrum —the punishments of harming posterity are inescapable.
One indicates favoring daughters while harming sons. One indicates being controlled and failing in old age, losing aiding forces and falling into cold decline.
Eyes that weep tears though one does not weep —if one has children, they will be harmed. Brows that are furrowed though the heart has no worries —loneliness in old age.
Tears without weeping indeed harms children. Yet there are also those who decline coldly and ruin the family. Worry without worrying is mostly the configuration of the toil-stricken and long-lived. A lonely old age requires other features bearing injurious patterns to verify.
A face like orange peel —early children are difficult to establish. Spirit like peach blossom —late offspring, then delayed achievement.
Orange peel means the traces of pores are deeply imprinted; children after thirty will be established. There are also children born of concubines. Wherever there is the delicate brilliance of floating peach-blossom color, men and women alike are prone to licentiousness and early death—how could this be about delayed children and late achievement? Perhaps the early Song era differed from today and reversed this.
A lifetime of toil despite wealth and nobility —only because the lower stop is too long. Poverty with no rest even in old age —because the sinews and bones are coarse.
Those with long lower stops are cautious people, mired in details and inflexible, exerting their minds appropriately. Those with coarse sinews and bones have great strength and courage, and should experience much toil. There are also those who achieve middle nobility and found enterprises. The mention of "poverty" in this saying is not accurate.
Sunken and defeated stars —no food to last the night. Damaged and deficient features —suffering throughout life.
Sunken and defeated means low, weak, and insufficient. Damaged and deficient means receiving harm and discord. Mutual generation naturally brings abundant food and emolument; mutual harmony naturally brings favorable encounters. Receiving harm brings cold decline and failure; discord brings external worries and internal troubles.
The Three Lights bright and clear —wealth comes naturally from heaven. The Six Mansions high and strong —prosperity for a lifetime.
When the Three Stops are bright, both office and emolument flourish. I have observed that when brightness is calm and settled, people and wealth go smoothly. When brightness is floating and greasy, instead one sees waste and loss. The original text does not cover this. Examining further, when the Six Mansions are high and strong, the early, middle, and late fortunes all have support. According to the Tianfu: this is the place of the heavenly granary—the ancestral enterprise has foundation, and the father's generation flourished greatly. The Zhongfu: the place of the national seal—relatives and friends assist and one has authority, the person's enterprise can develop. The Xiafu: the place of the cheeks and jaw—servants are loyal, internal and external support exists, and children can carry on the legacy. These are beneficial auxiliary features, but "prosperity" is not a certain term.
Red and yellow covering the face —both fame and profit are achieved. Hog's lard and coated ointment —children and grandchildren will certainly be punished.
Yellow is an auspicious color; red is a calamitous color—they cannot be jointly assessed. Lard color is floating light; ointment color is wretched and stagnant. One indicates loss and damage from others; one indicates official litigation and imprisonment. Neither is merely limited to harming children. Today some assert that it indicates great danger and death of the person.
Skin on the face too taut —though the philtrum is long, longevity suffers. Spiritlight in the eyes lacking luster —though the nose bridge is high, lifespan is shortened.
This means skin like an inflated drum, and spirit floating without root. Therefore although the philtrum is long and the nose bridge high, they cannot extend one's lifespan. In all cases, longevity is determined by reference to multiple features, never by a single feature alone. Therefore the following section has a specific entry with detailed discussion.
Eyeballs like water —men and women alike incline toward lechery. Brows like grass blades sharp as knives —death on the battlefield.
"Like water" refers to clear brilliance and shimmering wenness—an autumn-water glisten. According to physiognomy, those who are overly clear have thin qi endowment, making emotions and desires easily stirred, thus inclining to lechery. Brows like grass sharp as knives: such people suffer from ties to six relatives and distress. That they die as soldiers is not confirmed.
Brows bearing ridge-like angles —boundless joy for a lifetime. Eyes clear like a ceremonial cap —in middle years one encounters nobility and prospers.
The brow angles form the outer treasury, corresponding to establishing external enterprise with toil of heart. Why "joy"? "Like a cap" means the two corners turn upward. Han Chen Ping had this, reaching the pinnacle of officialdom. This far exceeds merely encountering nobility.
Yellow qi rising from the Gaoguang region —within several decades, one will certainly be promoted in office. Black qi stretching across the Sanyang region —within half a year, beware of harm to longevity.
Sanyang is the place where liver and lungs connect. Black color belongs to Water, with its Wood-Water mutual generation and Metal-Water mutual harmony—it should not result in death. Black color at Sanyang could indicate harm to children, or the illness-calamity of palpitations. If it manifests during the summer Fire season, then it is mortal. At other times, it is not yet a death-caliber calamity.
The Jianmen region pallid and withered —certainly the wife will suffer misfortune. Red light over the Nianshou regions —much hemorrhoidal trouble will occur.
These two, I have corrected, and they verify considerably.
White qi horizontal across the forehead —father and mother suffer injury. Green qi encroaching upon the cheekbones —contention with brothers and swallowing harms.
White qi indicates worry and troubled thought, corresponding to calamity and illness of parents, entangled in constraints. Mourning garments are mostly black-red in color, less often green-withered. Green qi at the cheekbones indicates contention among wives and concubines, litigation with uncles. It is not only swallowing, but includes deceptive and usurping behaviors.
The mountain root (nose bridge) bluish-black —between the ages of forty-nine, misfortunes are certain. Dharma lines coiling... —how can one pass the age of seventy-seven?
Currently it should manifest nine years prior. But the mountain root is the seat of a person's constitutional temperament. In children, bluish-black indicates mostly bed-wetting and roundworm qi. In adults, bluish-black indicates mostly yin-injury, insomnia, and kidney ailments. If the dharma lines are absent, one should die before age thirty.
In women, harsh eyes —upon marriage, the husband will be harmed. Voice harsh and face fleshy —the bridal chamber is dwelt in alone.
In an age of decline, the exposed often achieve nobility. Only the outcome is unfavorable—either contracting malignant illness or suffering childbirth calamity—these are configurations of early death. Those that harm the husband are rather few. A harsh voice mostly indicates narrow-mindedness and firm temperament; fleshy face indicates mostly arrogance, wildness, and jealousy. These indicate separation and remarriage.
Pointed forehead and protruding ears —even after three marriages, still not at rest. Protruding cheekbones and a masculine voice —even after seven losses, it is not yet done.
A pointed forehead does not favor early marriage; one should pass nineteen before it is auspicious. Sharp ears indicate parents unable to rely on—thus there is the saying of young marriage and remarriage. Protruding cheekbones often indicate assuming the husband's authority and toiling; the husband star is weak and useless. A masculine voice mostly harms the husband.
A skewed and asymmetrical forehead —internally licentious while outwardly not appearing so. Walking unevenly —outwardly good yet the heart remains poisonous.
Asymmetrical harms one's parents. The word "licentious" is imprecise. Only if the spirit is spent and yin-yang areas are bluish-black does it truly indicate licentious disorder. Uneven walking means leaping like a sparrow—it indicates sensitivity to trivial grievances, violating ethics, being captivated by profit.
Prominent cheeks rising behind the ears —the heart is cunning and greedy. Vicious eyes with a hooked nose —the nature is truly sinister and dangerous.
Prominent cheeks are few in prosperous eras and many in declining ones. Their form resembles eagle cheeks—bearing clever and extraordinary intelligence, also indicating great nobility. Vicious eyes indicate harm and ill fortune toward kin. A hooked nose indicates a greedy, self-serving heart. Yet these people achieve much and lose much, with no final resolution.
Heels not touching the ground when walking —one sells all fields and gardens and flees to other lands.
Wood-type individuals are ungrounded and not subject to this prohibition. Metal, Water, and Earth types are subject to it. If born into wealthy noble families, this portends early death and violent demise. If from poor families, there is also no hindrance. The saying here of first wealth then poverty only fulfills half of the matter.
The nose nostrils flaring upward and exposed —one whom external catastrophe eventually captures, ending in the lodging house.
Lion-form and Fire-form individuals are not prohibited from exposure; it accords with their form. For those other than these two forms, external calamities and internal worries will burden them. Thus it is said of wealth not entering the treasury—meaning one cannot establish standing.
Lips not covering the teeth —needlessly attracting blame and trouble. Philtrum revealing the mustache —a person lacks strength and assistance.
Both of these verify well. One indicates arrogance and conceit attracting trouble. One indicates uncertainty between right and wrong, understanding benefit and harm yet wavering in between.
The Yintang (between the brows) too narrow —children late and spouse late. The Xuanbi dim and gloomy —person dies and family is ruined.
When lines surge through the Yintang, the spouse and children are harmed and achieved later. A narrow [Yintang] actually only means narrow ambition and small tolerance with an easily agitated temperament. The Xuanbi refers to the two cheek regions of the jaw, located in the servant palace. This concerns ineffective use of subordinates and servants of deceitful stealing behavior. Matters of death of person and ruin of family should be seen in other ill-conditioned features.
A prominent Adam's apple with exposed teeth —flesh and blood separate. Coarse bones and tight skin —one's count of years is short.
A prominent Adam's apple mostly indicates toil and harm to brothers. Exposed teeth indicate contention and litigation, diverging and being contrary. The "separation" holds true. Coarse bones portend toil; tight skin portends illness. There are also those who live long.
Full-standing Detian (the flesh beneath the lower eyelids) —offspring achieved later. Tear chambers flat and full —children are seen early.
Detian is located in the horizontal lines beneath the eyes. When those lines bend inversely, daughters stand first; when bending sequentially, sons stand first. This "later achievement" should be understood as the absence of lines. The tear chamber is at the inner corner of the eye—not sunken but flat surely means surviving children appear early.
The Dragon Palace low and black —offspring are difficult to gain, and those gained are foolish.
The Dragon Palace is in the curved region of the eye cavity. If low and black, this is innate deficiency, excessive indulgence in lust—children mostly die young or are weak. That they are foolish, I do not count as verified.
The Yin-Yang regions bright and lustrous —children are easily raised and are intelligent.
This states that flourishing Sanyang favors sons, flourishing Sanyin favors daughters. Adding radiant moist complexion, certainly the offspring will be noble, elegant, and quick-witted.
A large face with a small nose —a lifetime of bitter hardship and toil.
These of small nose are all constitutions of the host principal weak and the follower strong. The entire life lacks rightful authority, being used by others. Hence one does another's undertaking with accomplishment returning to another and faults returning to oneself—repeating successes and defeats without constancy.
A thin nose on plump flesh —half a lifetime's purse and fortune waste away.
This says the wealth cannot enter storage, meeting setbacks mid-way and binding inheritances from the six relatives.
The Biansi frontier rising on four sides —past fifty one first attains honor. The Fuku corners high and bulging —at merely twenty-seven one holds official position.
The Biansi frontier rising is mostly verified among persons forced emigrate and separated from family, who then establish external careers. At age twenty-nine there will be sure development. That the saying says fifty likely reflects a perverse time's temper. If the assistant corners Are high, do arrange primacy around incoming youth. Contrariwise for heavy-boned individuals.
If narrow [Yintang] actually only means narrow ambition and small tolerance with an easily agitated temperament.
The Biansi frontier rising is mostly verified among persons forced to emigrate and separated from family, who then establish external careers. At age twenty-nine there will be sure development. That the saying says fifty likely reflects a perverse time's temper. The Fuku corners serve as the seat of early fortune. Thin-form individuals enter officialdom at eighteen; substantial-form individuals at twenty-three. In declining times, this tends toward earlier attainment.
The Mingzhu (bright pearl at the earlobe) tending toward the sea —Gong Taigong at eighty meeting King Wen. Fire-colored with kite-shoulders —Ma Zhou encountering the Tang emperor at thirty.
The Mingzhu is the pearl of the ear-helix. "Tending toward the sea" means the ears grow to extend past the mouth. So it flows beyond the lobe—this marks longevity itself shall fail herein if unfulfilled—the typical later note by traditional law—having viewed one C, observed…

Many people of former times have held this view, and in practice it has often been verified in cases of illness, disaster, and punishment by misfortune. In the present age, however, a mouth turned outward is considered a sign of violent death, with even greater severity than the law-enforcement line entering the mouth. I now record this additionally, awaiting confirmation by the wise of later generations.
Tiger-head with swallow-jaw—Ban Chao was enfeoffed as a marquis of ten thousand li. Dragon-walk with tiger-step—Liu Yu attained the emperorship of the ninefold heaven.
The tiger-head refers to the reclining-sumatra bone rising roundly and prominently. The swallow-jaw refers to the cheekbones and jaw angles protruding into a convex shape. Dragon-walk with tiger-step describes a body that is steady and weighty, where the feet are not seen, with long strides and majesty. These are all extraordinary features, and thus they yield extraordinary careers.
Mountain-forest bones rising—one ultimately becomes an immortal. Hall-of-print bone square—one is certain to reach the rank of general or minister.
The mountain-forest bone rises beneath the blessing-hall, slanting upward to the crown (baihui), which is the immortal bone producing an immortal character. The horizontal bone at the hall of print (yintang) is the golden-city bone. If it extends level to the end of the brow, this marks extraordinary nobility. Such a person will either leave a fragrant name for a hundred generations or a stench for ten thousand years.
Form like a clay idol—the appointed death cannot be escaped. The celestial pillar leaning askew—the illusory body will depart.
The clay idol describes a spirit dull and form stagnant, with complexion dusty and murky. This is the spirit not guarding its abode, the qi not circulating, the blood not penetrating the channels—naturally such a one will not be long-lived. The celestial pillar is what physicians call the da zhui acupoint, located on the back of the neck. Thus when a sick person hangs the head or frequently leans to one side, it means the celestial pillar is broken and death is certain.
Appearance like tarnished iron—fortune meets with adversity and obstruction. Complexion like auspicious clouds—the path ahead is smooth and prosperous.
Tarnished iron refers to the appearance of rusted iron—lacking vitality. Pure water, however, is not considered inauspicious. Auspicious clouds describe the appearance of purple haze—indicating joy and good fortune.
Fame achieved and profit attained—the three-platform palace brims with yellow light. Studies stalled and books difficult—blue qi grows at both brow ends.
The three platforms correspond from the blot (sikong) to the hall of print (yintang), including the two blessing-hall bones. The blot and hall of print are the official-star areas, and the blessing-hall apertures relate to outer treasury, hence the dictum of fame and profit. The two brow ends correspond to the upper gou-chen and upper memorial—governing documents, letters, strategy, and contemplation, hence the notion of stagnation.
Stagnation giving way to clarity—worries turn to joy. Clarity giving way to stagnation—good fortune turns instead to misfortune.
This concerns the matter of vital complexion. One must distinguish the importance of the facial region and the depth, size of the qi-color to judge the fortune or misfortune and its proximity. Thus, when stagnation reveals lighter strands, this amounts to whatever favorable intimation even amid troublesome circumstances, through extension thereof—joy gradually coming after anxiety, intentions succeeded. That shall be as the "breaking through clouds to see sunlight" phase of onset — hence therein is likewise contained despair turning to hope. Conversely, within brightly we now suffer more obscuring clouds/darker dim outlook—even amid comfortable situations, a singular unforeseen destruction prevails its snare-sting. Distinct casual fortune is misleading inducement not immediately evident, true misstep brings in unnoticed damaging affairs. Similar only results through which certain aromatic flame deceptively on last of ready potency. Within bright yell float… genuinely momentary, non-durable cloud-light!

Tiger-head with swallow-jaw—Ban Chao was enfeoffed as a marquis of ten thousand li. Dragon-walk with tiger-step—Liu Yu ascended to the throne of the ninefold heaven.
The tiger-head refers to the reclining-sumatra bone rising round and prominent. The swallow-jaw refers to cheekbones and jaw angles protruding into a convex form. Dragon-walk with tiger-step describes a body that is steady and weighty, where the feet are not visible, with long strides and majesty. These are all extraordinary features, and thus they yield extraordinary careers.
Mountain-forest bones rising—one ultimately becomes an immortal. Hall-of-print bone square—one is certain to reach the rank of general or minister.
The mountain-forest bone rises beneath the blessing-hall, slanting upward to the crown, and this is the immortal bone that produces an immortal character. The horizontal bone at the hall of print is the golden-city bone. If it extends level to the brow tip, this marks extraordinary nobility. Such a person will either leave a fragrant name for a hundred generations or a stench for ten thousand years.
Form like a clay idol—the appointed death cannot be escaped. The celestial pillar leaning askew—the illusory body will soon depart.
The clay idol describes a spirit dull and form stagnant, the complexion dusty and murky. This is the spirit not guarding its abode, the qi not circulating, the blood not flowing through the channels—naturally, such a person will not live long. The celestial pillar is what physicians call the great vertebra acupoint, located at the back of the neck. Thus, when a sick person hangs the head or frequently leans to one side, it is said the celestial pillar is broken and death will follow.
Appearance like tarnished iron—fortune is beset with difficulty and obstruction. Complexion like auspicious clouds—the road ahead is smooth and prosperous.
Tarnished iron describes the appearance of rusted metal—lacking vitality. Pure flowing water, however, is not to be dreaded. Auspicious clouds extend the violet haze phenomenon, itself affirming signs of an enjoyable turn.
Neither drunk yet like drunkenness, not sorrowful yet melancholic—the person is poor on deficits and ill fortunes. Not smiling yet appearing like a laugh, taken differently without certain cautions seem in mild grief, one— one slight wry from composure both forms his living long composed an err-shaken toward affairs getting risk caused fate.
The eye socket is overly thick, indicating many children but with mutual harm, and the qi is thick and licentious. A philtrum偏向左 harms the father;偏向右 harms the mother. However, being偏向左 results in having sons first and many sons; being偏向右 results in having daughters first and many daughters. There are both harms and prosperities—it is not exclusively a part of harm or punishment but a reference area.
Ghost teeth sharp and exposed, cunning, treacherous, greedy, and crafty. Spirit brows prominent and fierce, fierce, ruthless, and destined for a violent death.
Ghost teeth are sharp and long, uneven, unstable, and irregular in height. Such a person carries heavy penalties and harms parents, also prone to many nightmares, being foolish and boorish. Spirit brows, if fierce and thick, crossed and chaotic, indicate a rigid and arrogant temperament. A violent death requires corroboration from other facial features.
Human form resembling a ghost, food and clothing will not be abundant. Birth appearance like an immortal, a lifetime of leisure and ease.
Ghost form refers to a grim and murky countenance, belonging to the cold and stagnant type, indicating decline, withdrawal, and a life of worry. Immortal form is a clear, refined, and gentle appearance, indicating peace, leisure, and abundant blessings.
Messy hair at the Valley path, termed lewd and filthy. High bone at the ear root, termed the root of longevity.
Messy hair at the Valley path indicates intelligence but harms the wife, with some experiencing separation; lewdness and lust also accompany it. Having no hair at the Valley path also indicates a violent death. Sparse, fine, and soft hair is considered auspicious. The high bone behind the ear is one sign of longevity, also indicating a long life but with mental toil.
Bone frame and spirit clear, thinness can still be acceptable. Flesh flowing, murky, and thick, what is there to praise about being fat?
The wood type is clear and thin; since ancient times, those who left lasting fame through relics often belong to the wood type. Whether famed for essays, poetry, or attaining immortal rank, the wood type predominates. Therefore, thick, fat, and turbid flesh consists of base and detestable qualities.
Eyes floating with four whites, indicates solitude, harm, fierceness, and foolishness. Nose curved with three hollows, inevitably poor, lonely, and bitter.
Round, floating, and white eyes indicate violent death in most cases, with a short lifespan. Such people are arrogant and lewd, not foolish. A nose curved with three hollows indicates harm to descendants, not bitterness. These two are taboos in physiognomy; even if other features are extraordinary, it is not perfect.
Three points and six hollows, though cunning, suffer poverty. Four correct and five upright, though foolish and honest, enjoy many blessings.
The three points refer to the hairline point, nose tip, and chin tip. The six hollows refer to the upper, middle, and lower mansions. This implies talent and wit cannot forcibly overcome abundant blessings. The four correct refer to the four sacred mountains (north, south, east, west); the five upright refer to the five sense organs. This suggests blessings can overcome talent.
Long legs and thin neck, rushing about continuously in early years. Thin lips and pointed mouth, fond of gossip endlessly.
Goose eyebrows and rat eating, not only stingy but also poor. Sword nose and bee eyes, not only fierce but also base.
Goose eyebrows are low and connected to the eyes; rat eating was explained earlier. The sword nose is flat without distinction in size. Bee eyes have protruding black pupils. These four conform to principles, and there are many verified cases.
A man with a thin waist, can hardly establish family property. A woman with sloped shoulders, solitary, harmed, and remarried.
Men with thin waists are often afflicted with insufficient congenital endowment, come from wealthy families, and suffer from weakness or illness. Sloped shoulders mainly indicate meager blessings, matching the saying "beauty with thin fortunes." Some harm their husbands; some harm themselves. Hence the saying, "A beauty without shoulders is like a general without a neck."
Prominent cheekbones and a strong forehead, ultimately harms her husband. Coarse voice and rough bones, eventually a widow.
Women with prominent cheekbones have management abilities, but their husbands are weak and useless. A strong forehead indicates early harm; with fifteen to nineteen as the initial harm phase, and twenty to twenty-eight as the secondary. It is auspicious to marry late. A coarse voice harms her husband and ruins the family. Rough bones harm her husband and bring a life of toil.
Radiant and large mouth, one who craves sex and food, living off others. Swinging hands and shaking head, a woman of excess who harms her husband. Thick hair, heavy sideburns, and squinting, mainly indicating lewdness. Clear voice, refined spirit, and composed demeanor, one will surely have fortune and rank.
Radiance and brilliance are overly clear and floating. A large mouth indicates decline, withdrawal, and remarriage. Swinging hands and shaking head both denote lack of composure. Thick hair indicates lewdness and lowliness. Examining women's physiognomy, those who are clear and strange yet become prostitutes are often due to thick hair. Heavy sideburns indicate harming the mother, losing support in childhood without discipline—hence taboo for women.
Skin fragrant and supple, is a daughter from a wealthy manor. Countenance dignified and upright, must be a virtuous wife from a prestigious family. Bone structure fine and delicate, naturally affluent and leisurely. Hair and sideburns coarse and thick, toilsome and ultimately lowly.
Throughout history, candidates for royal consorts were selected for fragrant sweat and delicate flesh, avoiding body odor. However, fragrance and suppleness are also disliked; cold and clammy skin indicates delicate fertility. Warm and smooth is most prized.
The root of the nose uninterrupted, will surely marry a noble husband. The tear trough unmarred, will surely bear noble sons. Fine, glossy hair, endowed with a gentle temperament. Tense spirit and round eyes, irritable by nature. Hands and feet coarse and hard, truly elevated status reserved for others, becoming a concubine. Pointed nose and lowered head, ultimately a maidservant.
The root of the nose does not govern the husband-star but dictates the presence or absence of familial foundation and the crossroads of lifespan. The following indicators carry much verified truth and are essential points in examining women's typicality.
The sleeping silkworm area purple and moist, will surely bear noble sons. The lan terrace yellow and prominent, ultimately career success. A woman with a large mouth, indulges in enjoying family inheritance then become poor. A beauty with round shoulders, marries an accomplished scholar and obtain noble status.
The sleeping silkworm is the exclusive area for children. The lan terrace is exclusive for partial fortune. A large mouth is taboo in women's mold. Round shoulders are not a critical aspect, only emphasized for carrying thick consideration.
Readily gaining weight, despite the feminine type, instead enjoys prosperity. Round face and fat waist, resembling the masculine type, instead quite remarkable. Hands like dried ginger, capable of managing the household. Fists like brocade pouches, definitely achieve great enterprise.
Fat, heavy feminine types are naturally not beautiful but appear stocky and dignified; this suggests longevity and many children. Provided women's voice differs from masculine, all else is auspicious. Dried ginger and brocade pouches refer to many fine lines. I do not place strong emphasis on palms; they only supplement overall appearance, so I dare not judge prosperity solely by them.
Small head and large belly, a lifetime of exceeding in overeating. Few bones and much flesh, how will one survive thirty? Thick eyebrows and ferocious eyes, certainly solitary harm. Violent voice and murky breath, ultimately no great fortune. Eyes light like drunk, endless appointments at mulberry trees (sensuality). Seductive dimples emerging, indefinite evening rendezvous and lack of resolve.
Small head enables much toil and anxiety; few bones limit scope for longevity. Thick eyebrows induce repeating successes and failures; ferocious eyes bring diverse catastrophes. Violent voice suggests hasty rigidity; murky breath indicates mundane dullness. A drunken gaze, drowsy appearance, naturally indicates licentiousness. Double dimples echo peach blossom redness and luster. These few are most taboo in feminine.
Suf face as full moon, household and root estate throves entire dynasty. Lips like red lotus, sufficient in food and clothing. A mole on the nose root, without preexisting ailments, surely harmful there; child endanger will replace harm otherwise the mention hints further: otherwise, in all essence: in script differs with detail adaptations: further there explain later.
Face as the fullest Moon, family tide rises and legacy endures through current resplendence. Lips like the red lotus fair, sufficiency intrinsic: unaltered, later margins suffice. Root-nose black mole, the singular contradiction aligning everything incl malary into that ground-captured origin whichever arrives distinctly harnessed within these later boundary scopes sign malefic winds of the maiden we have traced.
If an unfavorable growth sits steep, perhaps it evokes one prolonged tradition naming such a fissure sequence by itself in genuine final variants set upon its region possible wording differs minimally among analog scope which: due to complexity local lineage diverges though residual trend uniform across terms nonetheless; under prior umbrella aligned per apex verified context constrains deep.
The character "寒" (cold) is used as an adjective, and the ancient method describes it as "a chicken in the rain, a cat that has fallen into water." I classify it as follows:
| Category of Cold | Specific Manifestation |
|---|---|
| Cold of Form | Like a chicken in the rain |
| Cold of Mouth | Eating like a rat, sloppily |
| Cold of Spirit | Not weeping yet appearing tearful |
| Cold of Breath | Not sorrowful yet appearing worried |
| Cold of Voice | Broken tone unable to close |
| Cold of Brows | Dense brows with heavy furrowing |
| Cold of Body | Shaking head and trembling feet |
| Cold of Complexion | Dull with floating grime |
| Cold of Heart | Wanting to speak but stopping, hesitating and faltering |
| Cold of Courage | Heart agitated and often timorous, distracted with worry |
| Cold of Intent | Success turns into failure; gratitude becomes resentment |
If one possesses a pattern carrying the "cold" character, even with intellect, talent, and literary works capable of being passed down through generations, there will never be a time of prosperity. It is like a fledgling bird whose feathers are not yet full—naturally it cannot fly high. For physiognomy can outweigh literary talent, and fortune can outweigh intellect. Who among the ages has achieved great success and established great enterprises solely through exceptional intellect and talent? And who among the ages, confined to poverty and buried in obscurity within the forests, has lacked exceptional intellect and talent?
**"Cold hair upon the face merely yields a scholar; lips turned upward and teeth exposed bring many misfortunes. Such a one bustles about all day in ceaseless motion; wealth and honor come not until a future life."'
Cold hair is a pattern of dense growth commonly seen—yet there are also those of nobility with remarkable distinction who achieve great renown and accomplishment. Some emerge from humble homes, driven by necessity and toil toward success, attaining prominence through perilous setbacks. During chaotic eras, many attain military honors. There are also those who, though wealthy and long-lived, suffer harm to wife and children, burdened by domestic anxieties and weighed down by afflicted relatives. In troubled times, many rise overnight. I suspect the character "毛" (hair) is a textual error for "寒滞" (cold and stagnant).
**"When the upper section is short and the lower long, many achievements and many failures lead to the empty void. Though one may manage to establish a household, it is like blazing sun shining upon frost and ice.""
The upper section corresponds to Heaven, the lower section to Earth. All patterns emphasize the Heavenly section, which carries forty-five of one hundred marks. Thus, a configuration where Heaven prevails over Earth is auspicious, while one where Earth prevails over Heaven is not. In chaotic times, there are those with a weak upper section who nevertheless prosper—but these are cases of inherited fortunes decaying and establishing oneself in a foreign land. I believe a proper assessment requires examining form, spirit, and breath together.
**"When the lower section is short and the upper long, the person shall surely become a prime minister serving the sovereign. If a commoner is born with this configuration, gold, silver, and pearls shall fill his granaries.""
The upper section being high and broad governs renown for nobility and longevity, along with the blessings of ancestral grace—enjoying the ample fortune left by predecessors, with parents living peacefully and without harm or conflict. However, such a life tends toward ease and leisure, whether in prosperity or decline. For those of noble rank, the determination is further refined by the size, shape, and squareness of the Vajra Bone at the top of the head.
**"The form admires grandeur yet fears obesity; grandeur brings glory, obesity brings death. Beyond twenty, obesity means certain death; at forty, returning to grandeur determines the time of rising.""
"Hong" refers to commanding tolerance and ease; "Kui" refers to positive initiative and achievement. "Hong Kui" together signifies great breadth of vessel coupled with great strength of momentum—heart settled and tranquil, appearance harmonious and lustrous. Naturally, this constitutes the form of a man destined to succeed. All youths must avoid flesh that is bloated and insubstantial. Those of naturally stout composition are not subject to this taboo. What is most forbidden is sudden weight gain. Thus there is the saying: gain fat at twenty, die at thirty; gain fat at thirty, die at forty. Upon my examination, in whose flesh is substantial and solid, the span extends by ten years: fat at twenty, die at forty; fat at thirty, die at fifty. In those where flesh is bloated but flaccid: fat at twenty, die at thirty-nine; fat at thirty, die at forty-nine—falling short even of full decade. This is because for men the count number is nine and for women eight, which forms the deterministic law.
**"Lean is lean, cold is cold; the lean and the cold are not the same kind. If lean with spirit, ultimately prosperity must come; though cold with elegant form, upon it loneliness still abides.""
The lean person depends upon spirit as his determining factor. Hence the lean yet spirited—whose spirit overcomes the form—shall surely prosper. The lean yet spiritless constitutes a pattern of premature death. The cold is detailed above: though possessing exceptional talent, such a one never achieves material success. Color (cai) refers to radiance and luster. The cold have no radiance. I suspect the character "cai" is a textual error for "hou" (substantial). For how could cold contain radiance? Radiance denotes bright moisture with an unusually fine tint, while cold is dull stagnation with withered grime. Thus the two characters "cold" and "radiance" are diametrically opposed and bear no resemblance whatsoever. How could they be interchanged in error? I speculate, this is a printing corruption introduced by later copyists.
**"Dread the complexion that is too delicate, and dread it too coquettish; petulant liveliness and delicate countenance allow no tolerance. In old age, delicate countenance invites hardship; in youth, delicate countenance cuts life short.""
The character "lian" refers to a floating luster with unctuous sheen. "Qi jiao" refers to a showy ruddiness that appears gilded. Hence the sayings regarding hardship, toll, and early demise. In old persons, delicate complexion presages loss of family members and lonely distress. Should other aspects of the form be auspicious, such a person shall have grandchildren but no sons. In young persons, delicate complexion presages untimely death, or at minimum ruin of the family estate before fortune turns. Members of the Fire element are not forbidden ruddiness and fineness—such rising despite abundant labor and toil.
"The eyebrows prefer curvature and most dread straightness; crooked and straight, the foolish know not which. The crooked bring many sons and sharp intelligence; the straight do harm to the wife and slay the children."
Among the methods of Mortal Robe (Ma-Yi), this section is highly effective. Could it be that during the Five Dynasties, the Way of Heaven matched that of today? Whenever the eyebrows curve, the man is blessed with abundant offspring—even a sunken philtrum and collapsed lacrimal hollow cannot overturn this. whenever the eyebrows run straight ¹, the issue is few though philtrum is deep and lacrimal region full. Again, curved eyebrows yield literary honors—though a man come from a martial family, he shall hold civil office with civil authority. Straight-swept brows yield martial rank—though a man come from literary stock, he shall take on military service and wield military might. If brows are straight in their anterior half curving to the tips², change from martial to civil is indicated. If curved anteriorly flattening to the tips, change from civil composition to military appointment will follow. Whether the natural harming of relations or augmentation of adherents, both ensue from the straight-vs-curved determination on 一律 fixed law remaining with both thriving and declining moral atmospheres, being broad or contracted is the primary weather-vane alone³.

Jianmen/Weiwei (Fish Tail): The depression at the temple area outside the outer canthus of the eye. It governs spousal relationships and personal charisma. A bluish-dark appearance indicates disaster or illness for wives and concubines, while a moist, lustrous appearance indicates a harmonious marriage.
Tianzhu (Dazhui acupoint): The protrusion at the seventh cervical vertebra. In physiognomy, it is considered correct when the Tianzhu is not tilted; if a patient's head tilts, it is a sign of death. Along with the philtrum and the mountain root (nasal bridge), it is listed as one of the key indicators of longevity or premature death.
Facial Reading and Psychology
Modern psychology has already produced some empirical studies supporting the hypothesis of "the correlation between facial features and personality." For example:
Microexpressions and the Psychology of Emotion
Paul Ekman’s theory of microexpressions resonates methodologically with the physiognomic approach of "examining the spirit and observing the complexion." The meticulous observation of the eyes, smile, and changes in facial complexion in physiognomy is, in essence, a long-term trait analysis of facial emotional expression. Ekman proposed microexpressions for seven basic emotions, while the physiognomic descriptions of facial states such as "drunken," "sorrowful," "smiling," and "startled" constitute a classification of facial traces left by prolonged emotional fixation.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Facial Diagnosis and Physiognomy
Traditional Chinese Medicine facial diagnosis (inspection) and physiognomy share the same methodological origin but diverge in their applications. TCM uses facial coloration to assess the functional state of internal organs, such as:
The system of complexion judgment in physiognomy highly overlaps with this, the difference being that TCM is used for health diagnosis, while physiognomy is used for fortune prediction. Modern medical facial diagnostic techniques (such as assessing jaundice or anemia through facial complexion) can also be viewed as a scientific development of this tradition.
Epigenetics and "the Mind Shapes the Face"
Research in epigenetics shows that long-term psychological states and lifestyle habits can influence gene expression through mechanisms such as DNA methylation, and these changes leave observable traces on one's appearance. This provides a pathway of interpretation in modern biology for the ancient proposition that "the mind shapes the face": long-term emotional states do indeed alter facial features, and facial features do indeed carry rich information about an individual's life history.
