Chapter 2 of 13
撼龙经
What is the most perplexing problem in dragon-seeking and point-acupuncture? — Finding a mountain of elegant form and, fully believing you have discovered the true dragon, only to find upon closer inspection that it is merely a branch dragon, not the main dragon's true vein. ⛰️
At the passes and gorges, accompanying guardian mountains stand, with flanks and spear-like peaks on left and right. 🌬️ Yet upon the main dragon, star peaks never truly stand as independent formations; relying solely on star peaks to judge dragon method approaches empty words. To dispel these doubts, know this: seeking dragons upon the main dragon is the truly reliable foundation.
The main dragon extends endlessly into the distance, gathering yang qi only mid-course. The mountains and waters before it may indeed be beautiful, yet the guarding dragons behind all turn their backs away—if you ask whether this is a true dragon, it is but the welcoming and escorting retinue of the main dragon. Like travelling a thousand miles carrying provisions, how could there be no midway resting place to distinguish inside from outside? The dragon vein extends boundlessly into the distance, and companion and guardian mountains surely take their proper places.
Wherever fine mountains serve as the main dragon's advance, flag-spear mountains necessarily appear at the branch dragon's end. 🚩 Flag-spears too are formed of star peaks—whether rounded and pure, or pointed and square, towering and singular. Yet seeking acupuncture points among them yields none—because the main dragon has not yet halted, while the branch dragon has already descended.
Acupuncture points may also be taken upon branch dragons, but half are false flower-grounds, and half true womb-sites. If it is a hollow flower-ground, there are no court-facing mountains; if it is a solid true point, there must be escorting mountains forming a circuit. Guardian encompassment must also be observed in layered count: one circuit of return, and the dragon body has some regard; yet do not lightly take it as a true point—this is but the embracing branches and leaves of the Guardian Dragon. Only with three or five circuits returning round can a point be taken at the branch dragon's waist.
The main dragon continues to follow the water away, its escorting dragons journeying far without ever looking back. The true dragon's body gives rise to no independent peaks—any peaks present are but the leafy escort mountains. If you see such a main dragon body, you must seek the true point at the main dragon's exhaustion. If you find the main dragon's end, where two waters converge, the point easily suffers wind assault. Where wind gnaws and water plunders, there is no true point—here doubt will arise.
Behold where waters entwine: outside the water, mountains gather to meet, turning back to gaze upon the ancestral mother mountain—this is precisely the true dragon's turning point. The winding returning dragon hooks like a clasp; before forming a point, it first forms a court mountain; the court mountains are all ancestral-root mountains, not requiring distant journeys of a thousand li.
The mountains before the point bow like ranks of officials, and a thousand sources, ten thousand branches of water all court inward. 🌊 This is the great method of dragon-seeking: two waters flank and escort, all turning to pay homage.
Where in dragon-seeking is one most perplexed? Finding star peaks that prove to be branch dragons. Among branch dragons, chaos prevails with no true point, and wherever a true dragon passes, one suspects it is not true. Only because one fails to recognize the flanking guardian mountains, one dotes instead on the flying peaks that come escorting at the feet. The flying peak dropping diagonally is the dragon's limb; peaks rise from the limbs, ranging high and singular. The true dragon's level ground bears no star peaks; the peaks springing from both flanks are hardest to grasp. Back-slanted, face-straight is called a flying peak—these are the true dragon's flanking escort peaks. One section rises as peak, one inserts as guard; two sections though long are called the wide gorge. The gorge extends circling beyond the true dragon's front, and the star peaks behind again compel fondness. Hesitating here with doubt unresolved, seek then along the true dragon's both sides: peaks rising on both sides serve as escort, while the true dragon's lowness and flatness is most precious. Star peaks on the flanks turn forward to make their bows, bowing before the point in service to me.
Ask you of the prefecture's true body vein—great waves spanning the river, where are any peaks? Peaks rising are the flanking dragons' limbs, departing to become small points and villages. Such dragon-seeking looks to both sides; both sides giving rise to limbs have never leaned askew. The true body winds off through the center, while Lu-storage, Broken-Army, Literary-Song, and Modest-Chastity largely serve as barriers.
Barriers have the great and small: Broken-Army and Lu-storage stars stand without as barriers. Lu-storage failing to form Lu becomes an altar-ground; Broken-Army failing to break becomes a near barrier. To seek great lands, first seek barrier-bureaus; barrier-bureau size is determined by the water-mouth mountains.
In general, dragon-seeking must seek the main dragon—do not say there are no star peaks and no transformations. If you cannot distinguish branch dragon from main dragon, every dragon vein you see seems chaotic and scattered. You do not know that a long main dragon has long guardian wrappings; outer mountains from outer counties serve as companions. Dragon-seeking extends a thousand li through the distance; next, five hundred, three hundred li.
First, on the topographic map, examine water sources: two waters flanking in escort — both bear vital qi. Water sources naturally have length differences—the long ones become prefectures, garrisons, and military towns; the shorter become counties. On branch dragons, every section is village country; on main dragons, every time, severed and re-severed. Branches split and cleft veins, scattering away; within the main are branches, within branches again mains. Whenever a branch dragon extends a hundred li, within that hundred li it serves as a county. Within a hundred li, lesser dragon veins each exist; where two waters gorge in, seek the winding bank. The winding bank holds moisture embracing the dragon's head, and where embraced lies good ground for gathering qi that does not scatter.
Here first examine the water-mouth mountains: water-mouth teeth interlock, and the inner bureau is wide and broad. Seek precisely where it is wide and level; left, right, surrounding — no hollow gaps where wind leaks through. A point is certain to exist here, then further observe the court waters and court mountains. Court waters approach equally far as the dragon vein, from the same ancestral root to serve as companions. Guest mountains come from a thousand li to act as court, arriving before you as near tables. Should there be true hospitable sentiment in their welcome, the Duke, Minister, General, and Chancellor are immediately certain to be determined.
Having found a true dragon yet failing to know the point, when one does not know the point, everything is but empty talk. Recognizing the dragon and recognizing the point, that is true true skill; burying in the true dragon, office-holding is unsevered. The true dragon, subtle and concealed in its plain ordinariness, has points difficult to find; only the court mountain reveals the secret depths: when the court mountain is high, position the point high; when low, insert the needle low.
Court mountains also have their true and false. If true, they come intentionally; if false, no court arrives, only futile fondness for sharp-pointed, exquisite, painting-like qualities. If a true court comes into the embrace, no need for points sharp as dragon-horses; what matters is arriving with ups and downs, rising and falling; one dislikes mountains that go straight away, sharp and slanted. Going straight away is called a Dropped Court Mountain; though pointed and round be seen, they are useless—like a nobleman standing with his back to you, his feelings utterly unrelated to mine.
There are also those that arrange horizontally as court: if a horizontal court is set as an official ministerial formation, the front mountain traversing with limbs branched, branching limbs serve as court with their heads first lowered. Heads lowering give rise to peaks, pointed or round, paired pendants arriving in file before me. The great array like teeth, lesser ones in marshaled ranks, like fish shoulder-to-shoulder, like silkworms side-by-side. The leftover court-mountain extends to make the water-mouth, fusing with the rear guardian mountains and their flanking wraps; the teeth interlock to keep waters from issuing asunder—releasing not a single mountain nor strand of water in loss.
Arriving here to position the point, one must set the bright hall as determinative. The bright hall's horizontal and direct dimensions must be scrupulously resolved: the horizontal wall's embracing amplitude holds wall stars, further, set by the Three Enclosures to deliberate interjunction. In junctions much interlaced remains deep the essence of Enclosure; in junctions fewer, Enclosure-bureau leaks essence. The long enclosure is precisely the court-line written in horizontal rows; the bureau's center, that is the bright hall's mountain. Hooks, bells, pendent-foot, facing the Enclosure-mouth — to the north, rank upon rank, revering the sage-counternance.
By and large, mountain forms though they lie in earth, the earthly classic light reposes among asterisms. The corporeal substance abides in earth while its luminosity shines in heaven; recognizing starlight, then do you possess wondrous and exquisite skill.
The bright hall cherishes water as it cherishes its own blood; the acupuncture point flees wind as a thief is fled. Do not allow the point to have gaps through which wind might strike; do not allow the cliff-slough to suffer water-plunder. 🌊 How is the bright hall discerned? within the encircled ring of exterior mountains lies composed land. There are likewise guardian gate mountains so. Arrive here, and deliberation must be fine.
Present-day geomancers, every time they reach a pass in the gorge, seeing surrounding hills and streams as one might admire them to themselves, linger over their deliberations claiming the bright hall lies here, wildly pointing the crosswise hill as a true ground. Yet little do they know that the secluded gorge in its circumscription is only a gate-guarding ground — the bright hall's vital qi leaked away. How is the leaked-qi method held to witness to itself? Left and right this side perhaps return in circuit, but externally, in outer form, there is no genuine arm around. These are the main's and protecting mountain's pass-avenues; do not mistake the playing-ground.
Precisely discussing in full for you the fashion of a bright hall: it must possess meandering wisdom-elevating waters that find their release. A bright hall stretching far and devious twisting like braided rope — far from the point yet facing front, turnback, lying around its arms; internal folding bend around, encircling in mountain-water, pattern-emblazoned, archief bow-clasped forms. The upward scarp descending, a fitting equal contra-line; amid them lucky point configured, oriented to its form. True be held a copy in which nothing false, others reach; form true, then the central puncture-point proves truly of itself — form faking, this lies false-air’s fiction, the pretender bewitching. The aping-air mountain's examination stands balanced on sloping sides, were even their voidness parallel counterfeit theirs, an arm without heart hugging within not — this is titled wander-wander; running their feld of glory's substantial essentials in abandon.
Behind whose ridge-and-tiger-stippled fabric folds lies in pleat-clothes, hems of official stage-hand-maids’ sleeves, though honored dancing weave, for punctures in the lay-gaze, their disenchanted scenery be ever unframed; officials’ exile takes fair for career of true?
On a genuine dragon’s certain way, felted plaquet luxuriatations follow where noble-carriages moved to rest —canopied skylines have made august, sure char or glamourous frames no mercurial stabs.
Then tell me what craftily contrived—"its name among noble"—who among map’s false-firm might miscopy walk that tread of true-state...
Yet none on land’s view have place untaxed whate’er page below: land indeed has cramp-ronds-measurbs. Tors mountains; tine run pedestal-level as brook-erthed shamed where name hides under one wall-erd of root-am et our—court names; not that hand some pool of monk-he or priest true know mountain face — fold, barè as wealth. I. The Cosmological View of Master-Subordinate Relationships. The core philosophical proposition throughout this chapter is how to identify the dominant force within a complex system. The relationships between trunk and branch, master and subordinate, genuine and false — these unities of opposites permeate the entire text. This is directly aligned with the yin-yang master-subordinate philosophy of the I Ching — yang leads while yin follows, yet the two are mutually rooted. Although the trunk dragon is noble, without branch dragons escorting it, its "form and qi disperse"; although the branch dragon is humble, if it receives multiple layers of enclosure, it can still be utilized. This reveals a profound truth: master-subordinate is not an absolute distinction of superiority and inferiority, but rather a difference in functional roles.
II. The Value Reversal of "Hidden Plainness" versus "Manifest Elegance." The text repeatedly states that "the true dragon is hidden and plain" and "the proper dragon's lowness and flatness are most precious," and "the seven-star peaks of the trunk are not counted" — this forms a striking contrast with worldly aesthetics. Ordinary people admire sharp, round, and elegant peaks, yet the true dragon is precisely low, plain, hidden, and unremarkable. This embodies a deep value philosophy: genuine power is often introverted and unostentatious. Dazzling things are often only accessories; the true ruler stands behind the scenes.
III. The Metaphysical Relationship between "Form" and "Light." "The body is on earth, while the light is in heaven" — mountain forms are the body of the earth, while starry light is the reflection of heaven. This is a quintessential expression in Chinese philosophy of the interpenetration of the metaphysical and the physical. Form is visible; light is invisible; yet it is precisely the invisible light that determines the nobility or baseness of form. This is structurally identical to the I Ching's mode of thought: "What is above form is called the Way; what is below form is called the vessel."
IV. The Epistemology of the Whole Determining the Parts. Nowhere in the text is a single element discussed in isolation as good or bad. The plump dragon requires lean escorts; the lean dragon requires plump defenses; the facing mountain requires undulation rather than sharp, painterly perfection; the open hall requires winding, curling containment rather than direct release — every judgment is a relational judgment, not a substantive judgment. This embodies a profound ecological wisdom: the value of things resides in relationships, not in the things themselves.
