Chapter 12 of 13
撼龙经
Hàn Lóng Jīng (Shaking Dragon Classic) – Burial Methods, Inverted Staff, The Twelve Staff Methods, concerns the twelve core techniques of Feng Shui point localization (xué). The so-called "inverted staff" (dǎo zhàng) is the core technique by which the Feng Shui master determines the acupuncture point of a grave, based on the urgency or gentleness of the incoming dragon's momentum, the elevation and undulation of the terrain, and the strength or weakness of the vein energy, thereby deciding the placement method and orientation of the coffin. The following elaborates each in detail:
The Shùn Staff Method: Suitable for terrain where the incoming vein is gentle, centered, and the dragon momentum is supple and winding. There is no need for excessive adjustments to the incoming vein; simply receive it head-on following the vein energy. The key operation is to have the coffin enter along the vein, with the yáng vein received at the yīn position, and the yīn vein met at the yáng position, driving straight through in a single breath. Yet one must note: the coffin head should not sit with its point directly at the position where the vein energy is strongest, or the energy will rush the brain and disperse—ironically rendering it unfavorable. If one can achieve the lower sand deflecting in reverse, the front facing mountains paying homage in court, the fetal water converging in the front, and the large and small horizontal waters locking off the hall area, the fortune rendered will be very great.
The Nì Staff Method: Suitable for strong dragon territories where the incoming vein was stimulated upward, and the centerline shoots straight with urgency. The dragon momentum is vigorous and rigid, and the vein energy proves too rapid too hard to receive head-on. It becomes necessary to avoid the baleful energy and seek a leaning point on the flank. Not to receive head-on may the sarcophagus lean obliquely or squarely against the vein's flank; the effect may touch ear to pillow, arm hooking armpit; the emphasis now is to relax lethal haste, to change vigor with moderation through flanking a flush-cut full-mindness, side issues now embraced before strong strokes, altogether damping ancient onset at exact source's poise and course itself curtails inside hollow down-ground route out closed sense from venting no flare then lasting bound in sweet turn this middle lane rolls seaward’s flow within gain forth returns shift home end march on brought within fore known front line: should there be cliffs over peaks where winds whip most...
