Chapter 5 of 13
撼龙经
Someone asks: How can adopted children and those continuing the lineage through monks or Taoists inherit the auspicious influence of feng shui?
The doctrine of burials receiving vital energy holds that ancestral bones absorb the spiritual energy of mountains and rivers, transmitting this fortune to descendants. But herein lies a question: adopted children are not of one's own blood, and monk or Taoist disciples are outsiders—how can they too inherit this fortune?
The ancients discussed this long ago. The principle of bones receiving energy and blessing the remains is clear and beyond doubt. But equating monks, Taoists, and adopted children with biological offspring certainly warrants deeper investigation.
When a family produces outstanding sons, it is the condensed essence of mountains and rivers. The spiritual energy of mountains and rivers descends and becomes spirit, and spirit follows the host family to generate people. Since this mountain and this point take this family as their master, spiritual energy descends upon this family through the incense offered. The ancients had the method of soul-summoning burial—without needing to bury actual bones, one could summon the soul with clothing and grave goods. With meticulous sacrifice, the Han dynasty's four-hundred-year foundation flourished through this. This shows one need not be tied to biological bones; as long as incense and sacrifice continue and sincerity of heart remains, it suffices.
Some ancestral graves have stood for four to five hundred years, with coffins and bones long turned to dust, yet descendants in the hundreds and thousands still enjoy prosperity and honor. At such times, one might ask: who is master of this mountain and this point? The mountain has its master, and the spirit resides only with this family. When mountains and rivers come in beauty for the descendants, why worry the family will not be wealthy and honored? The energy of mountains and rivers welcoming day and night gives birth to humans in the same manner.
Thus it is clear: adopted children and biological children equally receive the living energy of mountains and rivers—there is no difference. The ancients' saying of "grafting flowers and grafting fruit" finds its reference here. A stepmother can bless the children of a previous wife, and a previous wife can bless a stepmother's children, for the bond of nurture and care is like flesh and blood, sharing the same breath and branches.
By this logic of inheritance: as long as incense does not fade and sacrifice does not cease, whether through soul-summoning, adopted sons, or monastic succession, all are the same principle. 🌱
Second Question: How are the positions of inheritance (branches/houses) distinguished?
Someone asks: Parents show no distinction among children during their lifetime. Even if slight preferences existed in life, how can prosperity and decline be apportioned among the various branches after death? Consider a tree with shared roots: one branch withers while another flourishes. The flourishing one grows day and night, while the withered one gradually shrivels.
Thus arose the later doctrine of position allocation, dividing the eldest, middle, and youngest branches. Preferences arise from the human heart; prosperity and decline belong to geography. Love and dislike exist in life but vanish after death; the land has fertility and barrenness, which resembles this principle. If the eastern root is fertile, the eastern branch flourishes; if the western soil is poor, the western branch declines. But this theory may not be wholly sound—it seems right yet is mistaken, and deserves careful investigation.
Left for the eldest, front for the middle, right for the youngest—when did this doctrine arise? By the eight trigram positions: ☳ Zhen as eldest son resides in the left; ☵ Kan as middle son sits at the incoming ridge; ☶ Gen as youngest son sits northeast; ☰ Qian commands the three sons beside Kan; ☷ Kun as earth mother resides southwest; ☴ Xun as eldest daughter is in the southeast; ☲ Li as middle daughter sits in the noon direction; ☱ Dui as youngest daughter is in the west. These are the positions of Qian and Kun, male and female.
If one uses this method to discuss yin and yang: males reside to the left, females to the west side; the middle son follows the dragon behind, the middle daughter faces front—each has its proper sequence that can be deduced in detail.
Since the Xiao Liang period, when disputes over branch positions began, someone buried a jade goose in the Zhen position. Zhen corresponds to the eldest son, rising from the spring palace, and thus disputes arose over seeking the jade object. The doctrine of positional allocation originated from this. The determination: the eldest branch in Zhen, the middle branch in Li, the youngest branch in Dui; the fourth shares with the eldest, the fifth differs slightly from the second; the sixth matches the youngest son without distinction, the seventh with the eldest son—same discussion; the eighth shares fortune with the fifth, and the ninth ranks with the third.
This is the River Diagram's nine-palace method: the upper cycle groups one, four, seven together; the middle cycle places two, five, eight in the same ranks; the lower cycle connects three, six, nine. Later generations held this as fixed doctrine, merely dividing ranks by the River Diagram. ⛰
Third Question: How is the flourishing and decline of branch positions explained?
Someone asks: Although branch positions can be distinguished, how does one explain their flourishing or decline? Some flourish first and decline later; some decay to nothing then sprout anew. How is this principle discerned? Contemporary masters only analyze by water palaces, not knowing that times are ancient and worldly affairs are deep—how could there be eternal flourishing without cessation?
Though the beauty of mountains and rivers may be firmly entrenched, times of vigor and times of decline follow their seasons. Generations that prosper without end share one secret: they continuously gain more auspicious lands through succession. Those who decline lack later assistance; with deep years, energy fades and gradually diminishes. When discussing branch positions, never be obstinate—first examine the family's ancestral graves over several generations. If old and new graves are all genuine points, new graves inevitably support old ones. Such families flourish through the ages, their fortune and emolument unbounded.
True points need not be grand; accumulating small ones into great ones is most exquisite. If one grave is authentic but many are false, even the power of great terrain is dissipated. This is like a cup of water saving blazing fire—too little water, too much fire to save from calamity. Conversely, many genuine with few false becomes auspicious—like many waters converging into rivers and seas.
How can one divide branch positions by a single point alone, without considering the combined testament of many graves? Great lands are hard to obtain; small lands are easy to find. Accumulated without cease, they eventually form mountains. The combined strength of many graves achieves great fortune. Yet people only say small lands produce dukes and marquises. Then how much more when great lands have several points—generation after generation of nobles without rest. Whenever observing great households and illustrious clans, they surely possess great lands with boundless fortune. Though descendants scatter through a hundred generations, within lies abundant supporting ground for glory.
One great land can bless ten generations; a thousand small graves do likewise. A fine steed covers a thousand li in a day; an old nag takes ten stages but still arrives. If the grand plan fails, consider the next best—this matter should be discussed with those who understand. 🔥
Fourth Question: How to select a yang dwelling (house)?
Someone asks: A yang dwelling requires peaceful residence, and the principle is the same as settling graves. If a family has no good graves but has a good house, the power of the dwelling matches that of a yin site without difference.
Generally, yang dwellings are unsuitable for small points; small points only suit grave placement. If one uses a small point for a tall and grand house, the vital veins are all damaged by excavation. Moreover, with numerous descendants gradually splitting households, one point splits into four or five places—how could front and side, principal and subsidiary be without difference?
Yang dwellings require large points, broad and continuous, level and stable. With a horizontal jade belt spread before, wide enough to accommodate markets and communities within and without—this is the true yang dwelling location. Narrow and cramped sites that cannot accommodate should never be coveted. 🌊
Fifth Question: How do yin and yang dwellings differ in scale?
Someone asks: For yin and yang dwellings, the ancients long made distinctions. Lü Cai discussed in detail with a completed treatise; the argument is clear with no further distinctions needed.
To know dwelling suitability, one needs only vitality: with water embracing and mountains facing, there is surely spirit. If it abruptly pours downward, faces steeply, or runs at angles, tilting and fractured, none are auspicious ground. When the lower hand encircles, the facing court is orderly, and the master sits dignified without contradiction—then large or small, it will be peaceful, and a hundred years of dwelling brings family prosperity.
Grave points should be small, dwelling points should be large; grave points prefer steep side placement, dwelling points prefer broad openness. ⛰
Sixth Question: How to distinguish host and guest mountains?
Someone asks: Both host and guest mountains stand upright and proper, with two cliffs sharp and round mirroring each other. The host mountain forms a three-peak character pin arrangement, and the guest mountain likewise with three peaks of the same shape. From the guest mountain, the host looks splendid; from the host, the guest appears equally proper.
Here, how does one distinguish guest from host? Only treat the place where water embraces as the true host. The side where water turns away forms the guest—how many times have contemporary masters misled people to their ruin!
Whenever examining suspicious points, observe the hall and bureau: where the hall is genuine, water embraces and the body curves. If it passes levelly and suddenly, then distinguish among the encircling supporting ridges. Flanking and escorts can distinguish false from true. If the facing mountain lacks provenance, it relies on the dragon body for support; if the facing mountain comes straight with little curvature, the true dragon meanders and never directly faces people. 🌊
Seventh Question: How to distinguish true forms of points from false ones?
Someone asks: Dragons indeed have trunks and branches—how to recognize the disorder within branch and trunk?
From the trunk suddenly grows a branch; from the branch grows consecutively several points following along. This is branching dragon interspersed with vigorous energy—like melon vines that begin casting shoots. From branched shoots again grow offspring, and the form of these offspring will necessarily resemble. Perhaps like human forms they will number several points; animal forms must align in the same rank. Any shaped point must have two or three places, for qi of the same kind is always unified.
Thus flowing forms settle into solidness, and connected breeds become pairs and mates: serpent forms inevitably have male and female, tiger forms complement each other—never solitary.
In deep mountain gorges, never seek serpents—perhaps it is merely the slanting foot of a high mountain. If truly a serpent, there must be frog and clam forms; without frog and clam support, it is empty deception. Or it may be a centipede emerging with its face shown, and likewise has an earthworm form as its facing shore.
Great and fierce mountains—do not lightly speak of tigers; perhaps it is only a welcoming formation with proper hosts. Layered peaks dancing like a tiger walking—if it is a true tiger, there is no break-wing screen phenomenon. Additionally, there must be a meat-heap lion form beyond; without such facing shore, it is mere greeting formation.
To distinguish true from false is easy: false points lack true facing shores; true forms must have true counterpart formations. Human forms have human figures as kin; beast forms are subdued like devouring prey; bird forms surely have trailing tethers; dragon forms have clouds and thunder near water; moon forms see star formations displayed before. All true forms have true correspondences—seek by type and that reckoning shall come. 🌱
Eighth Question: How to understand trunk acting while branches decline?
Someone asks: The earlier treatise discussed rank: upper regions for marquises and princes, next for provinces and counties. Trunk dragons typically produce kings and nobles; branch dragons serving as trunks also flourish abundantly. This doctrine seems clear yet still raises doubt—allow me to offer one explanation.
Earlier we discussed flourishing and decline having their causes; yet branches may generate further branches. Joint after joint becomes dragon, each with its own point—whether completed or not, qi follows along. Why then does completion above invariably bring rest below? And completion below brings decline above? Since the vital veins are connected, surely there must be mutual dependence. How then do flourishing and decline still interrelate?
It comes down to small branch dragons having short vital passages, which further generate minor branches without transformation stages. Following the dragon merely as companion qi endows it with short endurance; the major current connects to the branch above the trunk. If the trunk tip has not yet formed, the branches flourish first; the branches have not formed while the trunk flourishes initially, and the trunk then finishes later—the trunk being long and the branches short, their power cannot rival it.
It is like a single bottle with several spouts: spouts small and mouth wide provide water of benefit; the outflow exits through the spouts rather than the mouth, yet if the mouth pours complete, the spouts run dry. Again, like a great tree producing small branches: small branches grow thin while large ones fatten—the large branch seizes the full qi away, and the small branch without being pruned naturally withers.
Furthermore, observe the newer works against the older: year by year, shallow and deep emerge by themselves. 🔥
Ninth Question: How to distinguish ornamental false points from real ones?
Someone asks: Earlier we said points are hard to find, only the facing mountain reveals the lucky mood. Since height and depth are determined by the facing mountain, the true point may indeed be measured accordingly. Only because there exist ornamental false points before and authentic descendents behind—false points behind can still be occupied. The ornamental points typically appear before the joined case ranges, with the facing mountain confronting properly just the same. If one takes the front facing features only as verification, the distinction between ornamental and authentic before and behind will be biased. At this point the mind and eyes grow confused—allow one further explanation.
False points are certainly born at the rear: despite orderly dragon and tiger, the cliffs above from the head always leak downward. From within the point one sees dragon and tiger returning, but from outside one detects the mountains ugly in retreat.
How do ornamental flower points appear at the front? Because the continuous arm formation makes them so. Arm joining [case alone becomes a new case] extends before the point laterally, and beyond that case physical feet stretch like a felt carpet. And yet among these—are there no point-like forms? One only sees facing features pointed and round, yet the sluggish master mistakes these for ornamental false ones, not knowing the true point lies secreted within the inner enclosure.
Front-aberrant and behind-false: few know how to read them; this is a method for well-protected of the True lineage in secret texts. Guo Pu though he left no school writings, today these direct words are spoken openly.
Flower points are what haunt men into confusion: the rear dragon perfected, the facing prospects remarkable—how not to pay one's affections to them? Only one flaw may be adjoined; all else deceptive. The case for such points displays its inward direction. The ornamental front presents its honest harbor, rear ground guarded beyond art as open bay whence surrounding outline shown not—what can add all there is? When someone whom considers flow, one observes their feet—all four patterns have hidden actual principles that on-site investigation will clarify.
Yet modern masters do all things visually thus becoming their standing folly in tomb-work or not at inspections conducted solely, mere logic misfits to their engagements.

The taxonomic framework of "flower acupoints in front, false acupoints behind," along with the on-site verification method of "ascending the true acupoint to test the breath of the four surroundings," represents ancient geomancers' attempt to systematize and operationalize their long-term observational experience. This cognitive cycle of "hypothesis—verification—revision" shares fundamental logic with the core of the scientific method. The geomorphological observation method and field reconnaissance method in modern geography are methodologically continuous with this tradition.
| Scenario | Ancient Wisdom | Modern Application |
|---|---|---|
| Residential Site Selection | Yang dwellings require large acupoints, water embracing, mountains facing, and a dignified central position | House selection:方正开阔的户型、充足采光、周边交通与配套如水势回环、地形稳定不陡峭 |
| Family Planning | Accumulating small into great, collective strength of multiple graves | Long-term family development cannot bet on a single resource; it requires multi-track layout and generational accumulation |
| Inheritance Arrangements | Continuity of ancestral rites outweighs blood lineage | The key to family business cultural inheritance lies in the continuation of values and sense of mission, not blood-based succession |
| Spatial Function Design | Yin should be small, Yang should be large | Differential design for different functional spaces: bedrooms should be small to gather qi, living rooms should be large to receive qi |
| Decision Verification | Ascend the true acupoint and verify the four surroundings | Major decisions must not rely on distant observation but require on-site visits, field investigation, and multi-party verification |
| Long-term Planning | Trunk long, branches short—strength is hard to contend; accumulate small into great | When resources are limited, conduct small-scale verification first and build up gradually, rather than achieving everything at once |
The Division and Union of Qi and Form—The Ontological Tension in Feng Shui
The deeper philosophical tension in the Ten Questions of the Suspected Dragon lies in: Qi is formless yet perceptible; form leaves traces yet is measurable. The recurring dilemma of discernment throughout the ten questions—host and guest, true and false, trunk and branch, flower and fruit—is essentially the epistemological problem of "how formless qi can be grasped through tangible forms." The path of resolution offered by the original text is: verify qi through form, observe stillness through movement. Where water embraces is the true host; true forms necessarily have true facing mountains; when ascending the acupoint, breath reaches all four surroundings—these are all means of verifying invisible qi through observable forms (water patterns, facing mountains, hall layouts).
This methodology carries profound phenomenological implications in philosophy: the essence of qi is not directly observed but grasped through its "modes of manifestation" (water embracing, mountains facing, peaks aligning). This bears structural similarity to Heidegger's notion that "Being reveals itself through beings."
The Spirit of "Doubt"—Another Form of Ancient Rational Thought
The title itself, "Suspected Dragon" (Yilong), is an act of resistance against dogmatism. All ten questions are expressions of "doubt"—questioning the legitimacy of adopted inheritance, questioning the certainty of birth-order division, questioning the absoluteness of rise-and-fall judgments, questioning the reliability of form-acupoint identification. This conscious spirit of skepticism is an extremely precious rational gene within the traditional divination system. It demonstrates that ancient China possessed not only a tradition of "belief" but also a tradition of "doubt," the latter having often been overlooked by orthodox intellectual history.
