• When the guiding principle is the substance, the favorable element (喜神) becomes the function:

  • If the guiding principle’s Resource Officer or Wealth is overly dominant, seek seals or allies from the year, month, or hour pillars.
  • If the guiding principle’s seals or allies are excessive, prioritize Resource Officers or Wealth from other pillars. This is the fundamental rule of substance and function ✅.

• Other scenarios:

  • The Four Pillars as substance, transformative energy (化神) as substance, or annual cycles as function—these depend on the authenticity of the transformative energy or the overall pattern’s momentum. Avoid rigidity. For instance, if the Day Master is irrelevant to the pattern, seek alternative dynamic functions ⚡.

• Substance-function dynamics:

  • The function may overshadow the substance (e.g., hidden or scattered Wealth/Officer).
  • Substance and function may operate independently or stagnate (e.g., excessive Wood-Fire without Metal-Earth 🌲🔥). Balance is crucial to avoid extremes.

• The function of substance and function is the useful deity (用神):

  • Restrain the strong; support the weak.
  • However, extreme strength may defy restraint—follow its momentum and support 🌪️.
  • Extreme weakness resists support—follow its decline and restrain ⛰️.
