Chapter 1 of 12
易冒
While in Chang'an, I heard of the venerable reputation of Master Cheng Yuanru. It was only ten years later that I was able to visit him. At first, Yuanru declined on account of illness, but through the introduction of Hu Litang, after several visits, Yuanru finally received me. Hearing his speech and discussions, I recognized him as a master of the caliber of Yan Junping or Sima Jizhu.
Thereafter I called at his home several times. Although Yuanru lay ill in bed, he would always force himself to rise and sit in conversation with me, showing no sign of weariness. One day he said to me: "At the age of five I lost my sight due to smallpox and could not pursue the imperial examinations. When I tried to study medicine, I failed, so I turned to the study of the Yijing. Initially I studied under Master Xingyuan, and in my later years I encountered the Old Man of Dried Gourd. Through mutual questioning and verification, I gained some insights, and I had others record them, producing a work over the years. I only fear that the prose is verbose and the meaning repetitive, so I have entrusted Litang with the task of revising it. Once the book is complete, I would ask you to write a preface for it." I agreed.
Before long, Litang passed away, and I privately worried that no one remained to assist in completing the book. Yuanru became even more grief-stricken, and his illness deepened daily. When I visited him, he could no longer leave his room, but I still hoped he might recover. Unexpectedly, Yuanru too passed away soon after. Alas, how painful! A mere ten days later, a man dressed in mourning garments, his face deeply darkened, holding a copy of the Yi Mao in his hands, knelt in tears and said: "My father, at the moment of his death, held my hand and enjoined me, saying that the book he had written was composed for me, and that the preface must be requested from Mr. Wang of Chu. I therefore respectfully follow his instructions and come to beg you, hoping that you will not refuse." Upon hearing these words I was overcome with grief—and how could I bear to decline?
I privately sigh: the transmission of Yijing learning down to the present day—it has not been cut off by those who do not study the Yijing, but by those who do. This is all too common. The study of the Yijing should never have been interrupted; yet it has been interrupted by those who do not seek the way of change but steal the techniques of heterodox schools to pass off as Yijing learning. This kind of interruption is the most severe. The Cheng brothers transmitted the Yijing based on Wang Bi, whose lineage goes back to Fei Zhi; Zhu Xi's Original Meaning is based on Lü Boqian, and the ancient Yijing on Tian He. None of them discoursed on the Yijing with non-Yijing language.
Yuanru's approach to the Yijing held that the hexagram statements are finite while the images are infinite. Whenever he cast a hexagram, observing its line images, inner and outer trigrams, yin and yang, and movement and stillness, he could see a person's lifelong fortune and misfortune, fortune and sorrow, as clearly as if viewing fire. Thus his reputation spread far and wide, and people came even from a thousand li away seeking a single divination before departing. Yet Yuanru only grew more humbled, devoting each day to observing images and playing with divination for his own self-cultivation.
Alas! Among my peers, there are those who hold high positions and style themselves celebrated scholars—ask one of them about the great meaning of the classics he studies, and he cannot even recite the chapter and verse, much less fully comprehend the subtle essence. This is where Yuanru is beyond reach. Moreover, the malady of our age is that scholars and officials regard mastering the classics and studying antiquity as pedantic, preferring to chase after ornate rhetoric to preen themselves. Even those who study the Yijing either cling to numbers or confine themselves to principle, failing to attain what lies beyond meaning, words, images, and numbers. Confucian scholars could not transmit the Yijing learning, and the one who transmitted it was a blind man—this is especially lamentable.
When the book was nearly complete, Litang and Yuanru passed away in succession. Some suggest that profound truths cannot be hidden by heaven and earth, and perhaps this was because they leaked cosmic mysteries too freely. I believe that studying the Yijing aims at reducing errors, and that one's reflections can communicate with the spirits—I have never heard of heaven prohibiting people from immersing themselves in truth. Surely the fact that he departed just as the book was finished embodies the principle "In the morning hear the Way, in the evening die content." Otherwise, why would Yuanru, at the moment of death, not speak of private matters but cling with heartfelt urgency to this book? Was it love of fame? No—it was that his lifelong mental energy was concentrated here, and he feared that later generations would not receive its transmission. Thus he thought not of himself but worried for posterity. In this way, the earnest entrustment of Yuanru's heart to me can now be comforted.
Mid-Autumn of the third year of Kangxi, composed by Wang Zehong, styled Anshi, of Chu.
I once read in historical records the saying of Guan Gongming—"one skilled in the Yijing does not discuss the Yijing"—and took it as an evasive remark made in reply to He Yan and Deng Yang. Now that I observe Master Cheng's book, I finally believe it. Master Cheng let down his curtain in the market of Tiger Forest, discerning good and ill fortune, discussing regret and remorse—all of this was the Yijing. And the Yi Mao, though it does not discuss the Yijing exhaustively, yet contains nothing that is not the Yijing—principle issues from the Yijing, and outside the Yijing there is no principle. Not discussing the Yijing exhaustively means that the Yijing is manifest through numbers, and the function of numbers is not the Yijing itself. Then why is it called "Yi Mao" (covering the Yijing)? Those who master this book can become skilled in the Yijing—the book is indeed spoken for the sake of the Yijing.
"The生生 (unceasing generation) is called Yi"—penetrating change without fixed direction, extending by analogy to exhaust spirit and reach transformation. The sages never intended for people to wither away among the judgments and line statements and call that the Yijing. Thus the Xici says: "Mao (cover) the way of all under heaven." Mao means to cover. Heaven covers all above, while the seven luminaries, the five phases, spring and autumn, cold and heat, the transformations of things and beings are scattered within it—none of these is called heaven, yet all are the affairs of heaven. The Yijing unifies the governing principle, while the ganzhi cycle, the six spirits, the transformations and mutual interactions, the reverse and recurrence, along with the various stars, the generation and response lines, and the meaning of the ninety-one points—none of these speaks directly of the Yijing, yet all are affairs of the Yijing. Thus Master Cheng's book does not discuss the Yijing, yet is exquisite in speaking of the Yijing.
People today do not examine this. Whenever they obtain works by authors like the Jiaos, they secretly store them in their tents, believing the Way resides therein—how could they know that the hidden subtleties are as profound and extensive as this? Master Cheng is a Guan Lu or Guo Pu of our age. Whenever asked, he divined; and whenever he divined, he was accurate. Visitors thronged at his gate like a marketplace, and by the time the sun slanted westward, there were those who had to turn back without having been received—thus it was for over twenty years. At the age of forty he fell ill and closed his door. Suddenly he felt his mind's eye stir within, and he was able to perceive the cosmic mystery. Thereupon he devoted himself to writing, exhausting the ultimate and wondrous, claiming to be able to supplement what the former sages had left incomplete. He probed the profundities and investigated the subtle, and only after three years was the book completed. Once completed, Master Cheng departed from the world. From this we see that the marvels of consulting the ink and examining the cracks—even had Master Cheng wished to conceal them, conceal them he could not.
In former days, Guo Pu possessed the Qingnang Shu in nine scrolls. His disciple Zhao Dai stole it, but before he could read it, it was consumed by fire. It seems that the single-handed mastery of secrets was grudged by the Creator. Chengzi did not die before his book was written, but precisely at the moment it was completed—surely this was not because heaven, at this critical juncture of the Way's continuation, caused Chengzi to carry on the former sages and open up later learning. How else could we have seen his transmitted work? My friend Gaozi Wenling most deeply admired Chengzi, and thus I was able to read all of his books. I sigh that Chengzi was skilled in the Yijing, and moreover that heaven gave him full scope for his talent in discoursing of the Yijing. From this perspective, although it may be said that Chengzi never died, it would also ring true.
The sixteenth day of the seventh month, autumn of the third year of Kangxi, by Gu Baowen of Qiexiang, Qiantang.
In my childhood I heard that in Xin'an there was a Master Cheng Yuanru skilled in divination, who lived in seclusion in the western part of our city of Hangzhou. At that time, carriages and horses bustled like a marketplace, and by dusk he could not yet let down his curtain and rest. My friend Mr. Hu Litang spoke of him in the highest terms, and I once followed him for a private look. I saw that Yuanru was of a stalwart appearance, and his eloquence poured forth like rivers. I knew in my heart that he was no ordinary street fortune-teller.
Later, Yuanru moved outside the city wall to become my neighbor, and our intercourse grew daily more intimate. I often came and went, hearing his lofty discussions, which even veteran scholars could not surpass. I privately thought: Jing Fang, Jiao Gan, Guan Lu, and Guo Pu were expert in Yijing numerology and left their names in writings—yet Yuanru, in his blindness, was this erudite. Unless he possessed a transcendent understanding from a former life, how could this be? I was then occupied with the imperial examination curriculum, and what I had studied was only the philology of the Yijing text. Whenever I watched Yuanru divine, his quotations of the hexagram statements were never at variance with the Original Meaning, and none failed to be miraculously accurate.
Someone said: Yuanru is expert in numbers but keeps his mysteries concealed, hiding the true meaning within ordinary speech. Yuanru laughed and replied: "The sage exhausts principle and number, and is employed by principle; later worthies push number and principle to the utmost, and are manifested through number. How could principle and number be two separate things? Master Zhu said that Confucius discussed the Yijing through moral principle because the images and numbers were already clear and need not be repeated. People today do not understand images and numbers, yet recklessly speak of Yijing principle—what correctness is there in that? And yet people only know that what principle reveals to human beings is evident, while what number tells them is subtle. They do not know that the subtlety of number contains determinate transformation, and the evidentness of principle shows inexhaustible response. In my childhood I was struck by disability and could not explore the source of the sage's exhaustion of principle in order to carry number to its furthest reaches. Fortunately I met Master Xingyuan and the Old Man of Dried Gourd, and delved deeply into the books and numbers of the sages and worthies, seeking them in principle—may it be that the ways of the dark and the bright, of life and death, advance and retreat, preservation and ruin, can be illuminated while sitting."
From this I came to know that Yuanru was indeed a man who had attained the Way, and even Sima Jizhu or Yan Junping might not have surpassed him. In the summer of the year Xinchou, Yuanru dreamed of two attendants in blue garments holding an official summons summoning him. Yuanru said: "It is no difficulty to go, but the art of divination has followed along hereditary tracks of dross without exhausting its profundity. I have received the teacher's transmission, and wish to establish a work and make it known to the world. For nearly twenty years I have held this intention, but have never managed to complete it—what shall I do?" The attendants said: "Let us make a request on your behalf, that your wish may be fulfilled." Upon awakening, he at once set himself to writing in earnest. After three years the book was completed, and he entrusted Litang with editing it. The editing was barely complete when Litang passed away. When the manuscript went to the printer and the woodblocks were cut, Yuanru also passed away. Alas! The establishment of a written work to transmit to posterity—its accomplishment lies in the long effort. Yuanru carried this ambition for nearly twenty years, and its fruition was so difficult. "In the morning hear the Way, in the evening die content"—one cannot say it was not the doing of heaven. Since his book is transmitted, is not the man himself immortal?
For this reason I sigh all the more that numbers are indeed determined, and that the sages' composing the Yijing to aid the people's use of it before events cannot be falsified. A man such as Yuanru is truly one who attained the Way, not a street fortune-teller. Those who read the Yi Mao will find their own resonance within it—this is not merely my private commendation because of deep friendship.
Mid-Autumn of the third year of Kangxi, respectfully composed by Lu Jin, styled Jinsi, of Xiling.
I was born into the Cheng family of Chansi in Xin'an, a respectable household. My late father, Lord Yingyuan, was a merchant in Wuxing, and my mother was née Xie. I was beset by misfortunes from birth, and at the age of five lost my sight due to smallpox. My late father said to my mother: "This child was precociously bright, and now he has become disabled and cannot pursue book learning or the examinations. We should have him study medicine instead." Thus he taught me medical texts. I listened with my ears, received with my mind, and was trained in point strokes by hand. By the time I was ten, I told my parents: "The key of medicine lies in looking, listening, asking, and taking the pulse. Since I cannot look, can my medical skill be remarkable?" So I abandoned medicine and turned to divination, following half a dozen practitioners and grasping the rough outlines.
Finally I studied with Master Xingyuan, who transmitted his school to me in full. Morning and evening I questioned him, committing things to memory and investigating, following him for five years—yet I still felt lost. Gradually I became distracted by music, rhythm, chess, and other diversions, and was on the verge of abandoning my studies. My teacher warned me: "The way of studying the Yijing requires concentration—concentration produces purity; purity perfects the art; perfection leads to spirit-penetration. Dispersion produces confusion—confusion produces laxity-maintaining; laxity-maintaining leads to non- attainment. Now you study without concentration—how can you reach understanding?" Thus I devoted myself even more fiercely to investigation, cutting off all external pleasures, exhausting my thought and neglecting sleep, thinking: among the countless phenomena of the world, how can I grasp a single principle to penetrate its fortune and misfortune without confusion?
At the age of eighteen, I began to awaken to the "action-爻's controlling line" (yongyao) method—it is this or it is that, it follows the great or the small—by merely seeking the one controlling line to decide all fortune and misfortune, one gains the handle. For example, when an old servant divines for a young master, one must employ the Parents line; when a young lord divines for an aging servant, one must employ the Wealth line—this is determined by station, not by age. In litigation, one relies on the Officers (ghost) line and only then considers the World and Response lines, because victory or defeat is decided by the magistrate. In matters of longevity, one relies on the Subject line and only then considers the Parents line, because the years one receives are endowed by one's parents. In imperial examinations, one first looks to the document/status line and only then to the Officer line; in the court examination at the palace, one first looks to the Officer line and then to the document/status line—each has its priority. By this extension, whether you go left or right, nothing will not be fitly applied.
So I gathered earlier transmissions, held fast to my teacher's doctrine, grounded it in personal insight, supplemented it with tested divination results, and compiled this work, comprising fifty chapters on divination matters, containing in detail 377 questions. I also examined the reasons for the sage's establishment of rules and regulations, pondering for three years without attaining. In the winter of the year Jimao, I happened to encounter the Old Man of Dried Gourd from Chu, and we communed together for three months, during which I asked him for instruction. The old man said: "The sages did not carelessly formulate rules to teach men—all must have foundations, and these are fully set forth in the books of the hundred schools. You have not been able to consult them all—I will transmit them to you one by one, but you must keep them secret." I said: "If the sages formulated rules to open up the ignorance of later generations, and I were to receive them and then keep them secret, what good would a private mastery do?" The Old Man of Dried Gourd said: "With such a mind, you may serve as a teacher to others! My earlier words were only a test. To establish a work and transmit it to the world—there is no accomplishment greater than this."
Thereupon I further studied several dozen works by former worthies illuminating the Yijing, and formulated forty-one sections of rules, making 91 chapters in all, arranged into ten scrolls. It sets forth the reasons for forming hexagrams and lines, and establishes the methods of earth and generation lines; it discusses the various stars and after what events they receive their names, the six spirits and after what matters they exercise their governance; the "suiting, tomb, aid, and harm" [formations] that are inauspicious yet sometimes not inauspicious; the absolute and the born [line relations] that are auspicious but also sometimes not auspicious; the void, break, extinction, and dispersion, which distinguish the true from the false; and flying, hidden, mutual, and change-line phenomena, which weigh the profound from the light. How can one cling to a single explanation and exhaust it all? Thus the Gold Strategies says "a changing line transforms into a changed line—a useful line that changes into a used line is useful without utility"; it says the transformations away are the diseases of the spirits and the cause of tortoise-style recurrences; but if it transforms into advance spirit, how can it be without utility? Again it says "excess must be reduced, only then completion"—this does not discuss fortune or misfortune, but judges whether a matter's completion aligns with the time. If one were to say that an excess of action-lines is inauspicious, then the statements "rising ahead, supplementing, supporting, and uniting" become unintelligible.
The Bu Yi Chan You says "the hidden and the hidden do not engage ten-day voids," but this can only refine relative weight, not remove the void entirely. Similarly, in the Bu Shi Yuan Gui on rain and clearness, the generation line is said to be the earth and the response line the heaven, while Jing Fang took the Parents line as heaven-and-earth—each has its partial strengths. The Bu Yi expounds the flying and hidden with the ruling generation line using palaces and auspicious trigrams; but even it leaves open a thousand roads. Each chapter therefore synthesizes the wisdom of masters, harmonizing the views of the various schools, seeking to categorize their patterns with sympathy and not presuming to break blindly from tradition.
Even after many years of searching through spirits and deities, there remain variations of folk customs within the six directions that cannot be named in concrete detail—only basic principles of the governance of change can serve as a guide. My teacher often said to me: "Where the discussion within has not yet matured, add what fills the gap; only then will the book become unambiguous in detail." So I drew upon our inward perception of order and direct contemplation, recording generous traditions and codifying subtler clues. If, at times my work moves into dangerous or novel territory, the root changes can nonetheless be tested. The order of reality heeded the pattern of authentic, unmanipulated evidence, established by true facts interweaving, like the clear lattice reflecting straight threads: The spirals extend endlessly, measuring further true and good and more coherently manifesting change.
The masters of my field did not achieve together what assembled strands could simply have carried away. In spite of the actual coherences they embedded secretly, preserving structural order unwritten meant open transmission. Ah! Wisdom tested in doing cannot claim universal extension, yet all the reliable, standard great routines hang together—persistence yields skill at last; genuine essence gains more for the benefit of others. The force of signs illuminates outer growth instantly. All this because hidden learning dared not lay to practice blind.
Because entreaties greeted me daily uncontested, the day assembling old works became possible only much later. When I thought, now at eighteen years gradually the chapters bloom through present direct action in day — details cast readily, till at forty pus-memorial blocked me within like confinement; recalling with solemn love should. Only then could I fully verify with three years peace-testing this measure every deep argument in true trust, examine text.

1. Principle and Number Are Not Two The heart of Cheng Liangyu's scholarship lies in dissolving the opposition between "moral principle" (yili) and "image-number" (xiangshu). He clearly states, "The sage exhausts principle and number, and is employed by principle; later worthies push number and principle to the utmost, and are manifested through number. How could principle and number be two things?" This breaks down the binary trap of later scholars who either incline toward empty discussions of principle or drown in numerological techniques. Principle as substance, number as function—source and application issue from the same root.
2. The Action-Controlled Line as the Guiding Thread The "action-test anchor" line, attained at eighteen, is the core innovating output of Cheng Liangyu's judgment framework. He advocated that whatever the matter divined, one must first determine that "single responsible tool" essential role-making which line sustains the unfolding truth of lot by separating an active current cycle before its consequence unraveled result is thereby sealed before considered. Targeted predictions finally beat sustained.
