An old Yin line changing into a young Yang line is called Change (Bian); an old Yang line changing into a young Yin line is called Transformation (Hua).
"Change" is like things withering and then growing again, retreating and then advancing, night ending and day beginning 🌅; "Transformation" is like things moving from completion to ruin, from high to low, from center to periphery 🌇. These two have their distinct names, collectively referred to as Change-transformation-transformation-change.
(Old Yin is "intersection" (Jiao), changing into single (i.e., six changes to seven); old Yang is "double" (Zhong), transforming into split (i.e., nine transforms to eight).)
In terms of 7, 8, 9, 6, they manifest the images of growth-decay, success-failure, advance-retreat, day-night; in terms of likes and dislikes, they have the distinctions of generation and overcoming, coming and going, and the breaking and decaying due to sun and moon.
(The Yijing uses odd-even and young-old to display hexagram images, while divination specifically examines the Numinous (Yongshen) in light of changed lines to determine fortune and misfortune.)
When both upper and lower hexagrams consist of young Yin and young Yang, one should not lightly say there is "hidden movement" then change; when within and without there are old Yin and old Yang, one should not fail to examine the change merely because the line is the "ancestral temple" (top line) or a "heaven" line.
(The Yijing says: The old change while the young do not; lines that are not six or nine do not change. However, the Yijing has teachings on "using nine" and "using six," wherein every line may change—how could one refuse to see change because the line is at the top of the hexagram or is the ancestral temple? The folk tradition claiming "hidden movement also changes" or "top lines move but do not change" is erroneous and corrected here.)
At the start of interpretation, first seek the Numinous (Yongshen). To determine whether the Numinous is strong or weak, first examine the likes and dislikes of moving lines; to determine whether moving lines are strong or weak, next examine the likes and dislikes of changed lines.
(If the numinous line is weak, observe the moving lines: if a moving line generates the Numinous, it is auspicious; if it overcomes it, inauspicious. And to judge whether the moving lines are strong or weak, observe what they transform into. For example, divining for wealth on a Wu month establishment and Ren Day, obtaining Ze Shui Kun changing to Kan Wei Shui. Wood dies at Wu; Haizi Primordial Spirit is weak, which should not be auspicious. But unexpectedly, Hai transforms into Long Life, making the Primary Spirit strong—eventually benefit was obtained. 🔥)
Then examine the likes and dislikes of other moving lines, and then the likes and dislikes of other moving and transformed lines.
(Other moving lines and other moving-transformed lines—if favorable to me, rejoice in their vitality; if unfavorable, delight in their weakness and imprisonment. For example, on an Wei month establishment, divining for a brother's illness on a Shen day, obtaining Tian Huo Tong Ren changing to Huo Shan Lü. The Mao line as Primary Spirit generates the Numinous, which should not be harmful. Yet the Shen line overcomes the Mao Primordial Spirit; later at the You month and Dinghai day, the disease proved incurable. This is the likes and dislikes of other moving lines.
Another example: on a Xu month establishment, Aug the Gengxu day, divining for official fortune, obtaining Shan Di Bo changing to Feng Shan Jian. Zi moves to generate Mao; Mao moves to generate Si fire official star; promotion should be expected. But unexpectedly, Zi transforms into Si which is its Extinction ground, so it cannot generate Mao; Mao transforms into Shen which is also its Extinction ground, so it cannot generate Si; the Si fire official star additionally enters the Tomb. Later at the Hai month he was dismissed from office. This is the likes and dislikes of other moving-transformed lines.)
Within generation there can be overcoming, within overcoming there can be generation; one must clearly discern the subtlety: there are cases where generation is broken and scattered so that generation does not continue; there are cases where overcoming is suppressed so that overcoming does not connect; there are cases where hidden moving lines prolong the generation. Thus even when all lines are chaotically moving, if the Numinous governs them, all mysteries are penetrated.
(For example, on a Shen month establishment, Nan You day, seeking wealth, encountering Lei Huo Feng changing to Ze Di Cui. Shen, Hai, and Mao all move, serially generating the Wu fire Numinous. But among them, Mao is scattered by You's clash, so its generation does not continue and turns toward harm. Likewise when You month breaks Mao, the same pattern applies.
Another example: on a Yin month establishment, Nan Wei day, seeking office, encountering Di Ze Lin changing to Shan Feng Gu. Si and You both move, serially overcoming Mao wood. But among them, Chou is scattered by Wei's clash, so You falls under Si's control; the overcoming does not continue, and instead works to one's benefit. When You itself is broken or scattered, similarly.
Another example: on a Xu month establishment, Chen day, seeking brothers, obtaining Gan Wei Tian changing to Feng Huo Jia Ren. Yin and Wu (fear star and enemy star) both move, jointly exerting to overcome; but among them, the Xu line moves darkly and prolongs the generation.)
When the Numinous changes and generates, it is auspicious; when it changes and is overcome, it is inauspicious — this is plain to see. If the Numinous is at exhaustion while a moving line happens to generate it, yet the generating line itself also changes, this cannot go unexamined. When all six lines move, then all six must be examined for what they change into—will the transforming line's power not compete with sun and month?
(Every line that changes should be examined. Assess with consideration of Numinous, Fear, Primordial, Enemy, and Resource-draining functions.)
Although only sun and month can control transforming lines—transforming lines cannot control sun and month—if sun/month overcome me but a transforming line generates me, it is still like face-saving vitality (Chue Chu Kuo Chin Tong—line and month overwhelm but something within rescues). And since transforming lines cannot avoid being void or broken within the ten-day period, transforming force rarely equals that of sun/month; moving lines cannot resist being clashed into transformation-extinctions, so moving force rarely equals transforming force.
In the way of divination, sun and month are most important; moving and transforming lines take second place.
(If on Hai month and Hai day, divining about the World line, encountering Tian Shan Dun changing to Gan Wei Tian: sun/month overcome me, but the transformed Yin generates me, which is called 'Face-saving vitality.' However, if in a Shen month or within the Jia Chen ten-day period, the transformed Yin is month-broken or ten-day void, it cannot generate me.)
Even so, there are line changes, and there are also hexagram changes. A six-harmony hexagram augurs certain success in undertakings; and if it transforms into six-clash, then things will not end well. Hidden-Pain, Reverse-Cry, overcoming-generation, tomb-extinction—all of these are hexagram transformations. How could they be overlooked?

Within hexagram changes, there is also the Mutual Hexagram (Hu-Gua). "Mutual" means interweaving—that is the twisting combination of the middle four lines. When there are transformed lines, take the transformed hexagram's second, third, and fourth lines as the inner trigram, and the original hexagram's third, fourth, and fifth lines as the outer trigram; when there are no transformed lines, take the second, third, and fourth lines as the inner, interlocking one repenting line to complete the Primary; and take the third, fourth, and fifth lines as the outer, interlocking one of the Primary lines to complete the Repenting. Why so? When a moving line is obtained by divination, the meaningful dynamism of the Yijing is revealed through movement, so on top of this is valued. When nothing moves, the meaningful endowment is contained in the Primary and Repenting, so the Mutual follows this principle.
The mutual (interlocked) hexagram is sought only when within flying, hidden, and changing hexagrams there is no Numinous line. Take the two trigrams of the mutual hexagram and distribute the six kin among them; thereby investigate their generating-overcoming relations with sun, moon, and moving lines, and fortune or misfortune will be apparent.
(On Moo Shen day, divining for a child's illness, obtaining Huo Di Jin changing to Shan Di Bo. The flying, hidden, and transformed images give no Numinous line; in the mutual hexagram Kam-Shui appears as the child and the moving line generates it. At the Hai order the child recovered. But if consulted in the fifth month, Kam-Zi should be broken; if consulted during the Jia Yin ten-day period, Kam-Zi should be void—although discernible through the mutual, it would be useless.)
Thus the mutual image is secondary yet cannot be discarded. The paired-hexagrams, interacting-hexagrams, opposing-hexagrams, and inverted-hexagrams listed in other transmissions—none of them add sound principle and should thus all be omitted.
(E.g., Tian Feng Gou paired with Di Le Fu is the paired-truth pattern; Xun and Kui present interchanging images; Zhun and Meng are reflective opposites; Song and Xu invert; with neither involving authentic principle, they are omitted.)
This chapter establishes the fundamental rules of the moving-and-changing line system within divination: With the Numinous (Yongshen) at the center, it expands outward through moving lines, transforming lines, other moving lines, and other moving-transformed lines—layer upon layer of deduction forming a rigorous network of generating-overcoming analysis. The crux is "The Numinous seeks to command; moving and changing serve its employ"—no matter how intricate the lines and hexagrams become, everything ultimately returns to the strength and fortune of the Numinous.
At its heart, this analytical scaffolding resembles a multivariate decision-model. The Numinous line marks the target variable (wealth line if seeking wealth, office line for rank). Moving and changed lines equate to the varying decisive conditions in a system that interlink through such chains of generate→overcome→suppress→transform. For a present-day reader, one may frame it as: realizing a goal not only depends on immediate factors, but the chain reactions of both direct and indirect variables. For example, seeking a job makes the Office star your Numinous; the direct moving–line could be the interview performance, which itself is influenced by the "adequate preparation time" (generated-by) and by compression-describing actors ("rival-intensity"), and these considerations remain temporal-ly dynamic (transformed lines).
"Change: like things fading then growing; Transformation: like things turning to defeat from completion, down from high..." separates two classical categories of processes behind any metaphysics: the circular-sway rises-spires (transform) versus straightforward-declinings (devolve). What might not ever stay monotonic: transformations cycle roots back echoing the Daodejing's important "reversal creates the 道 of procession─" ideas.
