Chapter 58 of 108
When Ding Fire meets the Wu month, the body is strong. Geng Metal receives support from Wu Earth (God of Food), making wealth strong. In the chart, body and wealth are balanced (strong body balanced by strong wealth), so the wealth star can be used to my advantage. The Ren Water hidden in Shen Metal could deplete the wealth energy (Metal generates Water, Water drains Metal's energy), but because Wu Earth appears on the Heavenly Stem, it secretly restrains Ren Water (Earth controls Water), preventing Water from depleting the wealth. What is desired is that Water does not appear on the Heavenly Stem—in this way, the wealth star is preserved for my use.

Key Analysis:
Original Text: The Day Master Ding Fire, occupying the Position of Proclamation in the month branch Wu, its robustness is evident. The hour pillar is Ji You; Food God and Wealth generate each other with mutual affection. With Ding Fire obtaining Lu, and Earth generating Metal, body and wealth achieve a proper balance. If the chart has additional Wood and Fire, then Wealth shall be the Use God. If Wealth is excessively dominant, then Wood and Fire shall serve as the Use God. Likes and aversions cannot be fixed rigidly—they must be determined by examining the overall configuration.

The Day Master Ding Fire, occupying the Position of Proclamation in the month command Wu, its robustness is evident. The hour pillar features Ji You; Ji Earth (Food God) generates You Metal (Indirect Wealth), forming a mutually nurturing relationship between Food and Wealth. With Ding Fire obtaining Lu and Earth-generated Metal, body and wealth achieve a proper equilibrium. If the chart is further enhanced by Wood and Fire (making the body stronger), then Wealth Star shall be the Use God; if the Wealth Star is excessively dominant (weak body), then Wood and Fire shall serve as the Use God (to support the Day Master). Likes and aversions should not be rigidly fixed—they must be determined through comprehensive assessment of the overall configuration.

Key Analysis:
Original Text: Ding Day Master in Wu month command, the Jian Lu configuration. The hour branch Xu combines with Wu, intensifying the Fire situation—the body is extremely strong. The hour stem Geng Metal, seated upon the Fire position, becomes brittle in nature due to Fire's refining; it delights in the generation of Damp Earth, thereby fully realizing Wealth's great function. In the chart, Fire, Earth, and Metal flow sequentially without conflict, suitable for a configuration of Hurting Officer Generating Wealth. Once Water arrives, one should abandon Wealth and adopt the Officer/Killing Star instead.
Vernacular Translation:
Ding Fire Day Master born in the Wu month—this is the Jian Lu configuration. The hour branch Xu, together with Wu, forms a half Fire combination, making the body extremely strong. The hour stem Geng Metal, the Direct Wealth, sits in the Xu Fire position, where Metal is smelted by Fire and becomes brittle—it delights in Damp Earth (Chou or Chen) to generate Metal, thereby fulfilling the Wealth Star's great purpose. In the chart, Fire generates Earth, and Earth generates Metal, flowing sequentially without conflict, qualifying for the Hurting Officer Generating Wealth configuration. Once Water appears (for seasonal regulation or as Officer/Killing), one abandons the Wealth Star and instead employs the Officer/Killing Star (Water controls Fire to restrain the strong body).

Key Analysis:
Original Text: Ding Day Master in Wu month command, the Jian Lu configuration. The hour pillar strikes Xin Hai. The month branch Wu, separated by the presence of Hai Water, cannot directly harm the hour stem's Xin Metal. However, desiring to employ Xin Metal Wealth as the Use God is difficult to accomplish—because using Xin Wealth causes Hai to drain its vital energy (Metal generates Water). Thus, when employing Wealth, one must have Food/Hurting Officer Earth; when employing Officer, one must have Shen or You Metal characters.

The month branch Wu Fire, due to the spatial separation created by Hai Water, cannot directly harm the hour stem's Xin Metal. However, seeking to employ Xin Metal as Indirect Wealth the Use God proves difficult, because when Xin Wealth is used, Hai Water drains the Metal's Qi (Metal generates Water). Therefore, if one wishes to employ Wealth, there must be Food/Hurting Officer Earth (Earth generates Metal and controls Water to protect Wealth); if one wishes to employ Officer (Water), then there must be Shen or You Metal (Metal generates Water, providing the Water with a sustainable source).

Key Analysis:
The fundamental tension of Ding Fire in the Wu month lies in the balance between the Jian Lu configuration's strong body and the midsummer Fire intensity that loses its moisture. Ding Fire is gentle by nature, but upon obtaining Lu in the Wu month, its Fire momentum surges dramatically, presenting an appearance of "outer softness with inner strength." Under this monthly command, seasonal regulation (Water) takes precedence over supporting the body (Wood and Fire)—this is the first principle of this destiny pattern.
The principles of Ding Fire in the Wu month, translated into modern context, represent a mindset of energy management and resource allocation.
The value in studying Ding Fire in the Wu month lies in its provision of a classic analytical framework for "strength requiring release, heat requiring moisture."
The destiny mathematics of Ding Fire in the Wu month unfolds the profound wisdom of the Chinese philosophical principle that "that which flares upward must be moistened from below."
Fire's Essence: Ding Fire is yin fire—gentle and form-adapting by nature, like candlelight or a distant star. Yet upon obtaining Lu in the Wu month, yin fire borrows yang momentum to become a spreading blaze. This reveals that the essence of any thing transforms with its environment—environmental force often exceeds the constraints of innate nature.
Imbalance and Restoration: The central issue for Ding Fire in the Wu month is extremity rather than deficiency. Wood overabundance of Fire necessitates Water's presence to achieve balance. This precisely echoes the Tao Te Ching's teaching: "The Way of Heaven diminishes the excessive and supplements the deficient." In nature, midsummer heat is always moderated by rainfall; in human affairs, at the height of career success, one must maintain humility and composure.
Distinguishing Dry from Damp: The Chou and Chen versus Wei and Xu differentiation reminds us that "similar in form, divergent in substance." Both are Earth, but due to different hidden stems, weights of yin and yang, and the positions they occupy, they produce opposite effects. This counsels consideration rather than being misled by superficial phenomena—analyzing the underlying essence.
Metal-Water Intergeneration as Sustainability: The cycle of Metal generating Water mirrors the transformation and regeneration of resources in the natural world. The meaning of wealth (Metal) lies not in accumulation itself, but in whether it can be converted into momentum for ongoing development (Water). To merely accumulate without transformation leads to stagnant waters; to continually consume without replenishment is to draw from an empty well. Water with a source flows far; fire with roots never dies.
| Concepts | Definition | Significance for Ding Day in Wu Month |
|---|---|---|
| Jian Lu Configuration | The month command is the Day Master's Lu position | Wu is Ding's Lu—foundation of a strong body |
| Seasonal Regulation Use God | The Use God selected for seasonal heat, cold, dryness, or dampness | Midsummer Fire intense—Water moderates the climate |
| Balanced Body and Wealth | Day Master and Wealth Star achieve parity in strength | As seen in Wu Shen Hour and Ji You Hour |
| Following Configuration | Day Master extremely strong with no controlling or transforming forces—follow the prevailing momentum | When Bing Wu Hour has no Metal or Water elsewhere |
| Officer-Seal Mutual Nourishment | Officer Star generates Seal Star, Seal Star generates Day Master | Xin Chou Hour when excessive Water calls for Jia Seal |
| Hurting Officer Generating Wealth | Hurting Officer generates Wealth Star—talent converted to assets | Geng Xu Hour with Fire-Earth-Metal sequential flow |
| Dry and Damp Earth | Wei and Xu are Dry Earth; Chou and Chen are Damp Earth | Dry Earth dims Fire and blocks Water—averse; Damp Earth drains Fire and stores Water—desirable |
| Wealth Hides, Office Manifests | Wealth prefers storage while Officer prefers exposure | Jia Chen Hour revealing Killing is dignified |
