Chapter 75 of 108
八字月令
Bing Fire is born in the seventh month, exactly at its ailing position, its momentum already gradually dissipating. In the earthly branches, Shen and Zi combine to form a Water bureau 🌊, while the stem Wu Earth emerges but floats rootless. Earthly branches flourish with Water while heavenly stems display Fire, creating an incompatibility of Fire and Water. It is favorable to see Yin, Si and similar characters appear, allowing Bing Fire's root to be stabilized. Although Metal and Water are the "true spirits" in command during autumn, one must still examine whether they genuinely serve the day master. If the day master itself is not firm, and then encounters the Seven Killings (Water), how could illness not follow? This is precisely the origin of the saying in destiny texts: "Bing encountering the Shen position fears the presence of Yang Water."
In the month command Shen, Metal and Water share the same palace; the hour branch Chou is the treasury of Xin Metal, and the hour stem Ji Earth finds its root in Chou. Earth is damp and forms mud 🌱, and the day master Bing Fire suffers excessive draining and destruction. At this time, Bing Fire is like the sun nearing the western mountains, urgently needing rooted Wood as seal (Yin, Mao and other rooted Wood) combined with rooted Fire as companions (Si, Wu and other rooted Fire) to mutually assist, only then can it restore vigorous spirit.
The month command Shen clashes with the hour branch Yin ⚡. At this time, Metal is strong and Wood is weak; the clash portends danger of uprooting Wood. The hour stem Geng Metal sits on its robust position at Shen, forming an excess of Wealth and weakness of the self configuration. It is necessary to have rooted Si Fire, which combines with Shen Metal, so that the seal star's root can be preserved. When the Wealth star is excessively strong, one uniquely favors companions and robbers (Bing, Ding, Si, Wu) to assist the self in dividing Wealth—this is what is called "one spirit, one function."
Mao and Shen secretly combine, with circumstances leaning toward Wealth; Bing and Xin also combine, unavoidably showing excessive affection. If Shen, You, Hai, and Zi all arrive, and the heavenly stems further reveal Ren and Gui, then it should be judged according to the transformed Water configuration. Otherwise, the day master is weak and greatly delights in Wood and Fire for support, regarding Metal and Water as ailments.
Shen and Chen arch a Water bureau, and the hour stem further reveals Ren Water, forming an excessive Killing and weak self configuration. Bing Fire inherently fears the Food and Injury stars (Earth) for draining, but at this time when Water flourishes and Fire is extinguished, one only fears the Earth not appearing. Therefore, in this configuration, Seven Killings are the ailment, and Food and Injury stars are the medicine. However, if the self is too weak, then the functions of Wood-Fire seal and companions outweigh the Earth of Food and Injury.
Bing Fire obtains its robust position at the Si hour; in the Shen month, Gui emerges, and the Officer star is also flourishing. With a strong self and a revealed Officer, naturally the Officer can be employed. But the Si robust position is bound by the Shen combination, and Bing Fire's qi cannot be singular. Although Si and Shen do not transform into Water, the Fire's power still suffers damage. Dittian Sui states: "Why let the lady's caprice linger"—this phrase refers precisely to the detriment of the affectionless combination of Si and Shen. Wood and Fire assistance to the day master remains necessary.
Bing Fire sits on the Wu blade, and the hour stem Jia Wood serves as seal for assistance. Although autumn Fire has lost its command, with numerous allies it becomes strong. With Shen as the month command, if Ren Water emerges, then Wealth transforms into Killing, and naturally one should take the Seven Killings as the function while discarding the Wealth star—truly a noble configuration of Killing and Blade shining together.
Yi Wood seal sits in its treasury at Wei, and the day master's qi turns stronger. The month command Shen conceals Ren; upon encountering Wei, the momentum turns turbid. Most favorable is the heavenly stems revealing Metal and Water; with a strong self, one should first employ the Killing. If Geng and Xin appear in multiplicity, or the Food and Injury stars (Earth) arrive together, then one may abandon Water and employ the Earth and Metal spirits.
In the seventh month, Bing Fire—the sun has already turned westward ⛅. Two Bings both approach the Shen position: Wealth flourishes while the day master's qi is shallow. In Shen, Metal and Water flourish equally, Wealth and Killing arise together, and the declining Fire faces the calamity of extinction! Only by borrowing the power of companions and robbers (Fire) and the resources of the seal (Wood) can it be saved; otherwise, the situation is like a thousand pounds hanging by a single hair—danger at any moment.
The heavenly stems present Bing and Ding side by side; the earthly branches You and Shen are both Metal. The Wealth star approaches the companions and robbers, inherently carrying the intent of contention. Little does one realize that at this autumn time, Metal flourishes and Fire declines; Metal, holding command and rooted in the ground, can instead subdue the idle, floating, and weak Fire. This is precisely the inversion of the Five Elements—"Fire can control Metal, but strong Metal can likewise control Fire." This configuration still relies on the power of Wood seal and Fire companions.
Bing Fire sits in its treasury at Xu, displaying an appearance of twilight's last reflection. With Shen as the month command, the Wealth star holds command; with Wu and Xu at the hour, the Food God gains vitality. Earth comes to generate Metal, and the center of gravity lies entirely in Metal. With a single point of weakened Bing Fire, how can it bear this configuration of heavy Food generating Wealth? Only Wood seal and Fire companions mutually assisting the self can suffice. The classics state: "Fire meeting Fire radiates brilliance; though seen repeatedly, it will surely benefit."
Ren Water obtains its robust position in Hai, and Ren Water in Shen obtains its longevity; two Nens concealed in the month and hour, additionally supported by Geng Metal in Shen—truly one may call this autumn waters tracing to their source. The Jia Wood seal hidden in Hai, being damp Wood, cannot generate Bing Fire. The day master is too weak, and always delights in having companions and seal (Fire, Wood) as assistance.
The core contradiction of Bing Fire in the Shen month lies in: Autumn Metal holds command, Fire is at its ailing position, and Shen conceals Ren Water's longevity—Wealth and Killing share the same source. The key to the entire configuration's success or failure is whether the day master obtains rooting and assistance.
| Element | Status | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Month command Shen Metal | Holding command and strong | Wealth star in charge, secretly concealing Ren Water Seven Killings |
| Bing Fire day master | Ailing, lost command | Urgently needs Wood and Fire support |
| Ren Water Seven Killings | Longevity at Shen | When Wealth flourishes, Killing follows in rising |
| Yin, Si, Wu, Xu | Where Bing Fire's root qi resides | Key to whether the self is strong |
Although the twelve hour-pillar configurations each differ, the judgment standard running throughout is highly consistent: First examine whether Bing Fire has a root, then examine whether Metal and Water are excessive, and finally determine the selection and rejection of function spirits. The strong self can bear Wealth and Officer; the weak self lacks the strength to turn the tide and must rely on seal and companions for rescue.
The principle of Bing Fire in the Shen month, mapped onto contemporary life, can be understood as how an individual conducts themselves in an environment where resources are abundant but consumption is equally heavy.
The predicament of Bing Fire in the Shen month touches upon a profound philosophical proposition: the dialectical relationship between strength and weakness.
Autumn Metal flourishing and Fire declining is an inevitability of natural rhythm. Yet the wisdom of destiny science lies precisely in this: the declining may not be truly declining, and the flourishing may not be truly dependable. Though Bing Fire is at its ailing position, if it obtains the roots of Yin, Wu, or Xu, and the seals of Jia or Yi, it can conversely appear strong amid decline. Conversely, without root or support, even with abundant external opportunities, they merely serve as accelerated consumption toward ruin.
The "inversion of the Five Elements" theory (see the Ding You hour) carries even deeper meaning: Fire inherently controls Metal, but when Metal flourishes to the extreme, it can instead insult Fire. This reminds us: the comparison of power is dynamic, depending entirely on the current situation and position, rather than inherent generation-control relationships. This is the essence of "living method" in destiny science—not clinging to dogma, but observing actual conditions.
Viewed from a broader perspective, the successive judgments of the twelve hour-pillars demonstrate a systemic way of thinking: there is no isolated good or bad fortune, only the mutual interaction and weighing of various elements within the overall configuration. This coincidentally aligns with the modern systems theory concept that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts."
Contemporary research in the destiny science community on Bing Fire in the Shen month emphasizes integrated analysis of seasonal regulation and configuration structure. Traditional inference favors the dichotomy of "strong self versus weak self," while modern researchers tend to introduce an energy gradient model, treating the day master's root qi, seal star's generation, and companion assistance as "energy inputs," while treating Wealth consumption, Officer-Killing pressure, and Food and Injury draining as "energy outputs." The sustainability of the configuration is judged by the net value of inputs minus outputs—a method sharing remarkable parallels with the cash flow model in corporate financial analysis, also offering a fresh perspective for interdisciplinary research between destiny science and modern management studies.
