Capítulo 15 de 68
易经
The Hexagram of Modesty symbolizes the virtue of humility: smooth and favorable progress. If the gentleman can maintain modesty throughout, he will surely come to a good end. 🌱
The Commentary on the Judgement says: Modesty leads to smooth progress. The way of Heaven (yang energy) descends to aid all things and becomes ever more radiant; the way of Earth (yin energy) dwells in low positions while its energy rises upward. The way of Heaven diminishes the full and augments the modest; the way of Earth transforms the full and flows toward the modest; spirits and gods bring disaster to the full and bestow blessings upon the modest; the way of humanity detests the full and favors the modest. Those who are modest, when in positions of honor, shine even more brightly; when in positions of humility, they cannot be surpassed — this is why the gentleman can attain a good ending. ⛰️
The Commentary on the Image says: Within the earth lies hidden a mountain — this is the image of Modesty. The gentleman, observing this image, takes from the excessive and supplements the insufficient, weighs things fairly and distributes evenly. 🌍
First Six: A gentleman who is modest and yet again modest can cross great rivers and mighty streams — auspicious.
Commentary on the Image: "A gentleman who is modest and yet again modest" — this means cultivating oneself through the path of humility.
Second Six: Having renown while still maintaining modesty — perseverance brings good fortune.
Commentary on the Image: "Having renown while remaining modest and persevering brings good fortune" — this shows inner purity and self-contentment.
Nine in the Third Place: A gentleman of great merit who remains modest will surely come to a good end — auspicious.
Commentary on the Image: "A gentleman of great merit who remains modest" — all under heaven willingly submit to him.
Fourth Six: Nothing is unfavorable. Display and exercise the virtue of modesty.
Commentary on the Image: "Nothing is unfavorable. Display and exercise the virtue of modesty" — because one does not violate the principles of modesty.
Fifth Six: One's own resources are not abundant, but neighboring states come to assist. It is favorable to mobilize troops for punitive expeditions — nothing is unfavorable.
Commentary on the Image: "It is favorable to mobilize troops" — this means punishing those who do not submit.
Top Six: Having renown while still remaining modest — it is favorable to mobilize troops to chastise one's own towns and states.
Commentary on the Image: "Having renown while remaining modest" — the aspiration has not yet been fully realized. One may mobilize troops to chastise one's towns and states. 🔥
The Hexagram of Modesty holds an extremely special position among the sixty-four hexagrams — it is the only hexagram in which all six lines are auspicious. This phenomenon in itself conveys the core concept: Modesty is the fundamental law of heaven's way, and the most secure wisdom for survival in human affairs.
The image "mountain within earth" carries powerful symbolic tension: a mountain is tall and grand, yet willingly dwells beneath the ground — this is precisely the imagery of "having greatness yet not regarding oneself as great." The way of heaven diminishing the full and augmenting the modest, the way of earth transforming the full and flowing toward the modest, spirits and gods harming the full and blessing the modest, the way of humanity detesting the full and favoring the modest — these four dimensions collectively argue a single logic: Fullness inevitably invites loss; modesty inevitably brings benefit. This is not moral preaching but an objective law of cosmic operation.
The six lines of the entire hexagram progress layer by layer, demonstrating the practical forms of modest virtue under different circumstances:
The Hexagram of Modesty offers profound insights for modern people, especially in an era that encourages "personal branding" and "self-promotion."
Modesty is not inferiority, but the lucidity of "possessing without clinging." The "laboring modesty" of the Nine in the Third Place holds the greatest contemporary value — true modesty is not lacking merit, but having merit without being arrogant about it. In the modern workplace, leaders who are genuinely respected are often not those with the greatest ability who are also arrogant and domineering, but those whose achievements are remarkable yet still respect the team.
The way of heaven "diminishing the full and augmenting the modest" echoes modern regression-to-the-mean thinking. Any system inevitably corrects after excessive expansion — economic bubbles, personal reputation bubbles, and power bubbles alike. The "taking from the excessive and supplementing the deficient, weighing and distributing evenly" of the Modesty Hexagram is precisely a systemic balancing approach: directing surplus resources toward areas of scarcity to restore dynamic equilibrium to the whole. This aligns remarkably with redistribution logic in modern economics and the concept of "antifragility" in management theory (pursuing robust sustainability rather than extreme peaks).
"Modesty in honor shines brightly; in humility it cannot be surpassed" reveals the true source of strength in modesty. The more modest a person is, the harder they are to attack, because modest people do not create opposition; moreover, those who are modest continuously absorb new things, allowing internal energy to steadily accumulate, forming an unassailable foundation. Research in modern psychology on "Humble Leadership" demonstrates that humble leaders are better able to inspire team creativity and loyalty — this is the contemporary footnote to "all the people submit to him."
Workplace Decision Scenario: When you achieve notable results, the Nine in the Third Place provides a template for action — continue focusing on the work, don't compete for recognition or claim credit, attribute achievements to the team. Practice proves this often yields more lasting influence. The essence of "the laboring modest gentleman comes to a good end" is: Let merit speak for itself; let time be the judge.
Interpersonal Scenario: The "renowned modesty" of the Second Six suggests that when your abilities or reputation are already known, remaining humble actually amplifies your prestige. Conversely, if you become complacent and show off after minor achievements, you invite exactly what "the way of humanity detests the full" describes.
Conflict Resolution Scenario: The Fifth Six and Top Six lines concern "punitive expeditions" and "deploying troops," which on the surface may seem to contradict the virtue of modesty — yet they reveal another face of modesty: Modesty is not principled retreat. When faced with obvious injustice and impropriety, the modest person should "use punitive expeditions to chastise the non-submissive," correcting deviation through righteousness. This is what is meant by "strength within modesty." In modern contexts, when facing workplace bullying or infringement of interests, modest individuals likewise need to act decisively to defend boundaries. The key difference: the motivation is to restore order, not to display dominance.
Self-Cultivation Scenario: "Disciplining oneself with humility" from the First Six provides an extremely practical practice. Deliberately maintaining a low profile in daily life is not suppression but creating space for oneself to grow. Self-discipline means self-management — accumulating quietly where no one watches, training inner strength during calm times, so that when the need arises to "cross the great river," sufficient depth of character is there to meet the challenge.
The Hexagram of Modesty touches one of the deepest propositions in Chinese philosophy: the dialectical relationship between "having" and "not-having."
A mountain within the earth: this is "having greatness yet appearing as nothing." Laozi's words, "Great fullness appears empty, yet its use is inexhaustible," share the same origin and structure as this hexagram image. The essence of modesty is not "having less," but "having while not displaying" — this is a higher level of "having," because only those who truly possess something have the capacity to choose not to display it.
Furthermore, "The way of heaven diminishes the full and augments the modest" reveals a non-linear cosmic vision: The extreme of prosperity is the beginning of decline; the extreme of modesty is the beginning of prosperity. This implicitly resonates with the concept of "self-organized criticality" in modern complexity science — systems are most fragile near critical thresholds, and the self-regulation of modesty is precisely a strategy for keeping systems far from the tipping point of collapse.
The ultimate philosophical direction of the Modesty Hexagram is: Modesty is not a means; it is a way of being. All six lines being auspicious is not because modesty "brings" good fortune, but because modesty itself is a state of alignment with the Dao. When one no longer clings to the display of the "self," but instead synchronizes with the rhythm of all things in their operation, a good ending naturally follows. This is what Confucius called "the Mean" and what Zhuangzi called "carefree wandering" — in modesty, one finds one's precisely fitting place in the cosmos. 🌌
| Concept | Related Explanation |
|---|---|
| Taking from excess to supplement deficiency (Póu duō yì guǎ) | The core methodology in the Great Image of the Modesty Hexagram, sharing identical meaning with Laozi's "The way of heaven diminishes the excessive and supplements the deficient," constituting one of the origins of distributive justice in Chinese thought |
| Disciplining oneself with humility (Bēi yǐ zì mù) | From the Image commentary of the First Six; "self-discipline" means self-restraint and cultivation, connected with the Confucian "restraining oneself and restoring propriety" and the Daoist "one who conquers oneself is strong" |
| Laboring modesty (Láo qiān) | From the Nine in the Third Place; later "the laboring modest gentleman" became an idiom describing those with great merit who do not presume upon it |
| Renowned modesty (Míng qiān) | Appearing in both the Second Six and Top Six, meaning having reputation while maintaining modesty, forming intertextuality with the Book of Documents: "Fullness invites loss; modesty receives benefit" |
| The hexagram transformation of Earth over Mountain | The Modesty Hexagram comes from the Peeling Hexagram (Mountain over Earth) with the top yang line descending to the third position, symbolizing "that which is high descending to a low place" — a structural humility of "bending downward" |
| All six lines auspicious | Among the sixty-four hexagrams, no hexagram other than Modesty has all six lines auspicious; this unique phenomenon has historically been regarded by yi-ologists as the numerological basis for "the greatest preciousness of humble virtue" |
Decision Scenario: Confronting Recognition and Promotion Opportunities
