🌋 The Wanderer Hexagram: Mountain over Fire, Li Above Gen Below
Hexagram Judgment: The Wanderer. Success through smallness. It is auspicious to remain steadfast and upright while wandering.
In situations of drifting, sojourning, or dwelling in a foreign land, only modest progress can be achieved. However, if one can hold fast to integrity while traveling, good fortune will ultimately follow. Life is like a journey — ever-changing and unstable. Maintaining inner steadfastness and gentleness is the very foundation for surviving and thriving amid uncertainty.
Commentary on the Judgment (彖传): The reason the Wanderer Hexagram can achieve "small success" lies in the soft line (Six in the Fifth Place) occupying the center of the outer trigram, yielding to the strong lines above and below. The inner trigram is Gen (Mountain — Stillness), and the outer trigram is Li (Fire — Clarity) — the heart remains calm and knowing when to stop, while outwardly one sees clearly with insight. Thus small success is attained. How profound is the meaning of the wandering condition! Where in life are we not travelers? Remaining vigilant in times of peace and unshaken in the face of change — this is the great message of this hexagram.
Revelation from the Image (象传): ⛰️ A fire 🔥 burns atop the mountain, spreading without stopping, just as a traveler moves in haste with no fixed abode. The superior person learns from this: Examine grievances with clarity and avoid lengthy litigations; do not delay or prolong settling disputes. Whether governing affairs or handling relationships, one should not become attached to any single place, like a traveler — deciding decisively and not allowing resentment to accumulate.
Plain Language: Being overly concerned with trivial matters while traveling is precisely the cause of disaster.
Image Commentary: "The wanderer is fussy and petty" — the will is impoverished, the perspective is narrow, hence disaster arrives.
The Initial Six is a yin line at the very beginning of the hexagram, symbolizing one who has just set foot on the road. Because of inner restlessness and narrow-mindedness, such a person dwells upon insignificant details and thereby brings trouble upon himself.
Plain Language: During the journey, one finds a place to stay, carries sufficient resources, and gains a faithful and dependable servant. This is the most secure condition a traveler can hope for.

The Six in the Second Place is a yin line in the center of the inner trigram — gentle, docile, and upright. It symbolizes that the traveler has secured the three essentials for establishing oneself: shelter, resources, and trustworthy companions. When one has all three while away from home, there is no need to worry.
Plain Language: The inn is burned to the ground, and the servant-boy scatters away. At this point, even if one maintains adherence to what is right, the situation remains perilous.

The Nine in the Third Place is a yang line residing in a yang position — overly rigid and out of balance. While traveling, one should remain humble and gentle; if instead one becomes arrogant and dictatorial, wielding power and pressure, people will feel alienated, and even greater disasters may follow.
Plain Language: Along the journey, there is now a temporary dwelling, and financial means and implements have been secured — but the heart still does not feel joy.

The Nine in the Fourth Place is a yang line residing in a yin position — improperly placed. Compared with Nine in the Third, progress has been made: there is a place to settle and tools to work with, yet deep within, the person still feels unease and dissatisfaction — for this is only an expedient arrangement, not one's true destination.
Plain Language: Shooting for a pheasant, one arrow is lost, but ultimately renown and an official appointment are obtained.

The Six in the Fifth Place is the ruling line of the entire hexagram — gentle and centered, emanating from the Fire (Li) trigram of the outer half, symbolizing radiance and wisdom. Shooting a pheasant signifies aiming at a goal; losing an arrow signifies paying a price; ultimately achieving renown and appointment signifies earning recognition and reward in the end. 1. Life is a journey — steadfastness is paramount. The core message of the Wanderer Hexagram: in essence, every human being is merely a passerby in this world. Thus, upholding what is right is not some lofty proclamation reserved for stable times — it is the single anchor amid instability and displacement.
2. Softness in the center brings harmony; rigidity at the extremes brings danger. Among all the lines in the entire hexagram, only Six in the Second and Six in the Fifth — the two yin lines occupying the central positions — are the most auspicious. This illustrates that in times of wandering (i.e., disordered and unstable conditions), gentleness, humility, and centeredness surpass aggressiveness and over-assertiveness by far.
