Chapter 308 of 338
San Ming Tong Hui — Comprehensive Guide to Destiny
To deduce a person's fate, one must first analyze the prosperity and decline of the Day Pillar and its interactions, distinguish the patterns of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, to comprehend the workings of destiny. Nobility or baseness, clarity or obscurity, depend on the coordination between the upper and lower Stems and Branches; success or failure, prosperity or decline, are all concealed within the Five Elements and the Stems and Branches. The changes of the four seasons contain profound principles (such as Spring 🌱 growth, Summer 🔥 flourishing, Autumn 🍂 harvest, Winter ❄️ storage), and the flourishing and withering of the Five Elements have their inherent nature—in Spring, Wood (Jia, Yi) resides in Yin and Mao positions, unafraid of Metal (Geng, Xin) overcoming it; in Summer, Fire (Bing, Ding) rides the momentum of Si and Wu, why fear Water (Ren, Gui) invading? In Autumn, Metal (Geng, Xin) is in Dui position, Fire (Li) finds it hard to harm; in Winter, Water (Ren, Gui) meets Qian direction, how can Earth (Wu, Ji) overcome it? Earth born in the four seasons at the right time, encounters with its "ghost" (overcoming element) cause no harm; but if the Five Elements lose their advantageous position and face overcoming, disaster is unavoidable. For transformation patterns to form an image, balance between decline and prosperity is needed; in coordination, one must discern the paths of coming and going. Metal perishes in the North 🌊, Fire extinguishes in the West 🍂; Wood falling in the South 🔥 loses form, Water reaching the East 🌱 lacks position—this is because Yang Stems all perish, but encountering combination leads to grouping by kind; if the wife resembles a pagoda shape, it can be judged within the configuration. When Yin is born in the four cardinal directions during its prosperous time, the person is noble and the family glorious; if encountering death, extinction, tomb, or decline categories that harm the Stem, then poverty and weakness are inevitable. If the transformed qi enters a pattern without being broken, great nobility is achieved in eight or nine out of ten cases; if the transformed qi loses its configuration and is injured, those who achieve prominence and honor are less than one or two in a hundred. The most noble reside in prosperous places, requiring support from three sides; the most base and poor reside in declining lands, with the Four Pillars offering little opportunity for fortune. The primal image is hidden in the Earthly Branches, coordination lies in the Heavenly Stems. When the image forms and prosperous influences are used, all are born within Fire and Earth 🔥⛰; if the Four Pillars are unharmed, one can be ranked in the court. If there is fear within the Branches, reputation will not be poor; when luck reaches a declining region, misfortunes are sure to arise. Transformed creations each reside in lands of decline, tomb, or extinction; if an image forms a mixed configuration, encountering combination is like not encountering it. When the husband's luck prospers, the wife follows the husband; when the wife's luck supports, it is discussed as the husband following the wife. When one's self encounters a ghost, the middle way of Heaven and Earth must be used; whether the image is prosperous or declining determines glory, withering, nobility, and baseness. If the body is weak and the ghost strong, physical disability results; if the body is strong and the ghost weak, it is the fate of a violent person. If both ghost and body are weak, men wander and women become nuns; if substituting for the body and lying hidden, one attains a high reputation oneself. When the monthly qi injures, it is a hidden image. If both official and ghost are complete, one does not succeed at the appropriate age. If the Stems show defeat and ruin, skills accompany the person; if the Branches are the source of life and completeness, it is hard to rely on the six relatives and one stands alone. The attributes and images of the Five Elements are all within the twelve Earthly Branches; first distinguish north, south, east, west, then observe within the Three Harmonies to separately recognize. Detail the six relatives by inferring from the images; examine wealth and honor by looking at official position and salary: those with abundant salary may face widowhood, solitude, orphanhood, or isolation; those dominated by official-ghost may face disability or early death. If the body appears transformed but lacks qi, the original nature is entirely deficient, a false Five Elements forming an image. A lifetime of hardship is not due to ancestral blessing; manifest fortune and fullness arise from offending parents of another branch. In the theory of Following Images, guiding the qi serves as the function; in the theory of Transformation Images, Heaven and Earth are balanced. Within Following, there is nobility and baseness; within Transformation, there is wealth and poverty. If the Following Image's noble manifestation meets its time, one's position is in the court; if the Transformation Image forms a configuration and luck circulates, one is enfeoffed by the emperor's side. If the Following Image declines, one toils into old age; if the Transformation Image lies hidden, one remains ordinary all life.
