格局章
Bazi pattern (格局), is the specific structure and combination ultimately formed in a Bazi chart, based on the relationship between the Day Master (日干) and the Month Command (月令), followed by the interaction of the remaining stems and branches with the Month Command. This is the most concise, most fundamental definition of pattern analysis.
Understanding patterns hinges on the following eight essential principles:
First, within pattern analysis, the most important relationship is that between the Month Command and the Day Master. Since Xu Ziping (徐子平) established the day-master-centered destiny assessment system, the day stem—i.e., the Day Master—is used to analyze the structure of the Bazi chart through its relationship with the other seven stems and branches. However, analyzing seven stems and branches one by one makes the network too complex. The principal contradiction must be identified: the relationship between the Day Master and the Month Command. Why is the Month Command so crucial? The San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会), in its chapter on Regular Official (正官), explicitly states: "Among the five elements' qi, only that of the Month Command at the prevailing season is strongest." The five-element qi found in the Month Command is the purest and most substantial, best reflecting the essential nature of the five elements. 🌱
Second, once the principal contradiction between the Month Command and the Day Master is established, it is necessary to identify the attributes of the Month Command and its relation to the remaining stems and branches. This is akin to thoroughly vetting a candidate after selecting a business partner. Analysis now radiates around the Month Command—i.e., examining the relationships between the Month Command and the stems/branches (excluding the Day Master). For example, if the Day Master is Jia (甲), born in the You (酉) month, this indicates a Regular Officer pattern (正官格). But is this pattern actually established? Does a Hurting Officer (伤官) break the pattern? Within the Regular Officer pattern, which sub-type applies—such as Officer met with Wealth generating (官逢财生), Officer with Seal Star (官星配印), or Mixed Officer and Seven Killings (官杀混杂)?
Third, the pattern embodies the core principle that "the logic of destiny follows the logic of human affairs." Pattern-based analysis can model all manner of social relationships to the fullest extent, elevating plain five-element generative and overcoming relations to the higher level of Six Relatives killing and generating (六亲生克). Upon this foundation, life's generational trajectories (大运) and annual cycles (流年) are assessed. Consequently, within the pattern framework, one never encounters low-level formulations such as "Yang Metal overcomes Living Wood" or "Living Water overcomes Yin Fire." Five-element interaction is merely the bottom-layer knowledge of the destiny system; once elevated to Six Relatives interaction, pattern discourse functions through this lens. For example: "Metal overcomes Wood" uses the five-element terms, and belongs to five-element generating/overcoming; "Wealth generates Officer" does not involve specific five elements—it speaks purely through Six Relatives generating/overcoming. 🔥
Fourth, patterns chiefly determine a person's career level and social standing. When the pattern succeeds, one's career thrives. The Day Pillar represents the person; the Month Command represents the resources socially allocated; the remaining stems and branches denote the nature of those resources and the broader environment. The ultimate achievement depends on how the Day Master allocates and utilizes those resources. When the Month Command is a Wealth, Officer, Stamp, or Eating God, it must be used in positive compliance (顺用); when it is a Killing, Robber, Demon, or Blade, it must be converted in reversed application (逆用). As the Ming Tong Fu (明通赋) states: "Direct Officer, Stamp, Wealth, and Eating God are auspicious—pursue them submissively to secure rightness; Seven Killing, Robber, Devil, and Blade are malevolent—convert them with reversal to produce blessings."
Fifth, patterns mainly affect career, not marriage, family, health, or emotional states. Personality is only partially affected. Given career is impacted, financial luck naturally falls within this scope.
Sixth, different patterns possess no intrinsic hierarchy. A Regular Officer pattern and a Seven Killings pattern are neither superior nor inferior to one another—just as Chinese and Americans are both human beings and cannot be judged at that level of comparison. ⚖️
Seventh, a pattern represents a narrative range or bracket, not a discrete point. A chart establishing a pattern indicates career success, but by no means implies one must become a billionaire. A village chief holds the highest official rank within his village, so his pattern succeeds; a town governor similarly has pattern success. Though there is a gap in the level between village chiefs and town governors, the village chief's Bazi pattern may in fact be better—the village chief simply didn't reach the apex of his pattern's range. Those fortunate enough to develop a successful pattern should not rest complacently; instead they should exercise greater agency to scale toward the highest band of their own pattern. 📈
Eighth, if the pattern groundwork is solid, the prediction of major life phases and annual i cycles becomes precise. Both life phases and years operate by activating pattern conditions. Mastery of pattern analysis ensures that major-years forecasts flow without resistance, like water naturally forming its channel.
