Chapter 5 of 7
格局章
Favorable: Eating God (Food Spirit), Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue, Seven Killings (when Seal meets Seven Killings, look to the Seven Killings), with Officer Star as the guide.
Unfavorable: Punishments and Clashes, Hurting Officer, Death and Tomb places. The Seal of Chou and Wei is not afraid of Wood, but the Seal of Chen and Xu fears seeing Wood. The Seal pattern is also known by three names: first, Proper Seal; second,魁星 (Leader Star); third,孤极星 (Lone Ultimate Star).
The Seal of Authority (Yin Shou) is the name for the Five Elements that generate me. For example, when the Day Master Jia or Yi is born in the months of Hai or Zi, or when the Day Master Bing or Ding is born in the months of Yin or Mao. 🌱 The Seal is the source of my vital energy, the life-giving force, and represents my parents. It can protect my Officer Star, preventing it from being harmed or controlled. This is like receiving external assistance and nourishment in life, enjoying ready-made blessings — is this not a wonderful thing?
Those with this pattern are intelligent and resourceful, benevolent in nature, speak kindly but slowly and sparingly, have a full and ample appearance, good appetite, seldom fall ill throughout life, do not encounter violent calamities, but are relatively stingy with money. As officials, they tend to be proper officers, receiving imperial appointments. Regardless of civil or military positions, they can hold the seal of authority. They delight in seeing the Officer Star, because the Officer generates the Seal — the Seal represents the seal of office, signifying the power to command.
The classics say: "The Seal relies on the Officer to be generated." And also: "Having an Officer without a Seal does not make a true officer; having both Officer and Seal brings deep and abundant blessings." This means: if there is an Officer Star but no Seal, then the Hurting Officer can seize the opportunity to harm the Officer Star wantonly; but if the Proper Seal is present, the Hurting Officer is subdued and cannot harm the Officer Star.
Wealth Star is to be avoided, because Wealth can break the Seal. The classics say: "One born in the month that generates the Day Master without Heavenly Wealth — this bears the name of the Seal pattern." And also: "If the Seal is wounded, even glory and prosperity will not last long." The Seal acts like threads of life-giving energy, representing status and reputation; if the Seal is injured, all the benefits it represents will turn to their opposite. It is also said: "When the Seal is in the birth month, during the year and hour avoid seeing the Wealth Star. When fortune luck enters the Wealth direction, one should withdraw and step aside." The year and fortune are considered identically — the Proper Seal pattern does not favor the Proper Wealth Star, because Proper Wealth can ruin the Proper Seal.
When the Seal suffers no injury, one receives much parental blessing, enjoys ready-made wealth and resources, and dwells in peace and prosperity. Comparing all destinies, those with more Seal are superior. The Seal generates me, like a parent, so those whose Seal is uninjured enjoy largely ready-made blessings. Among the Four Pillars, the Month Pillar is most important, with Day and Hour secondary. Although the Year Stem is significant, it must return its禄 (prosperity) to the Month, Day, or Hour before it can be utilized. If the Seal appears in the Year, but the Month, Day, and Hour have no Seal, it accomplishes nothing. It is excellent if the Four Pillars originally contain the Officer Star. If the Seal is sparse but Officers and Ghosts are many, or it enters another pattern, then it cannot be discussed exclusively as a Seal pattern.
If the Seal meets additional patterns such as Gathered Prosperity (拱禄), Exclusive Prosperity (专禄), Returning Prosperity (归禄), Mouse Nobility (鼠贵), Gathered Nobility (夹贵), Timely Nobility (时贵), it is especially extraordinary — but it primarily indicates few children or no children. The Seal can drain the Officer Star's energy, hence showing a tendency toward few or no children; however, one cannot immediately conclude few children merely because a Seal pattern exists in the pillars — one must also examine the state of the offspring star.
An excess of Seal brings purity and solitude. The Ju Ji says: "When the Seal is excessive, purity and solitude are unavoidable."
In all Seal patterns, the Seven Killings are favored, but the Killing must not be too many — too many will harm the body — because the Killing generates the Seal, and the Seal generates the self, forming a flowing cycle. If there was originally no Seven Killing, encountering it in fortune luck brings prosperity. If the Seven Killing was originally present, then traveling into Wealth luck, or the Seal entering Death or Extinction, or approaching a Tomb place — all these are inauspicious. The classics say: "The Killing can generate the Seal, but fear traveling into Wealth territory. Breaking the Seal assists the Ghost — this definitely portends misfortune." And also: "If the Seal enters its Tomb, short life and premature death are hard to escape." When traveling in Wealth luck, Wealth ruins the Seal; the Seal can no longer transform the Killing, so the Seven Killing directly harms the body — hence inauspicious.
All patterns favor a vigorous self, but only the Seal favors a weak self. If the original chart carries Wealth injuring the Seal, and traveling into Peer or Robber luck, a vigorous self can also bring fortune; if there is no Wealth injuring the Seal, then a vigorous self is not favorable. If there are no Officer, Killing, or Wealth stars, and one travels into self-strengthening luck, this indicates ordinariness.
For Jia Day: encountering Zi month gives the Proper Seal, and Hai month gives the Partial Seal. Most favorable is to encounter Heavenly and Monthly Virtues (in Zi month, Heavenly Virtue is in Si, Monthly Virtue is in Ren; in Hai month, Heavenly Virtue is in Yi, Monthly Virtue is in Jia). At the Hour, seeing You Xin Proper Officer is excellent. Or seeing Shen Geng Seven Killing — but then one must see Peer or Robber to assist the self and combine with the Killing for nobility. Fear Wu and Ji Wealth stars damaging the Seal; avoid Bing and Ding Eating and Hurting generating Wealth to break the Seal. For Yi Day: encountering Hai or Zi months — the favors and aversions are the same as for Jia.
For Bing Day: encountering Mao month gives the Proper Seal; Heavenly Virtue is in Kun (Shen), Monthly Virtue is in Jia. Yin month gives the Partial Seal; Heavenly Virtue is in Ding, Monthly Virtue is in Bing. Favorable is seeing Zi Gui Proper Officer, or Ren Hai Seven Killing — but then Peer or Robber must assist the self to combine with the Killing. Fear Shen Geng and You Xin Wealth stars damaging the Seal; avoid Wu and Ji Eating and Hurting generating Wealth to break the Seal. For Ding Day: encountering Yin or Mao months — the favors and aversions are the same as for Bing.
For Wu Day: encountering Wu month gives the Proper Seal; Heavenly Virtue is in Hai, Monthly Virtue is in Bing. Si month gives the Partial Seal; Heavenly Virtue is in Xin, Monthly Virtue is in Geng. Favorable is encountering Mao Yi Proper Officer, or Yin Jia Seven Killing — but when seeing the Killing, Peer or Robber should assist the self to combine with it. Avoid seeing Ren and Gui, Zi Wealth ruining the Seal; and Geng Xin Eating and Hurting generating Wealth to break the Seal. For Ji Day: born in Si or Wu months — the favors and aversions are the same as for Wu.
For Geng Day: born in Wu month gives the Proper Seal; Heavenly Virtue is in Qian (Hai), Monthly Virtue is in Bing. Si month gives the Partial Seal; Heavenly Virtue is in Xin, Monthly Virtue is in Geng. Favorable is seeing Wu Ding Officer Star, or Si Bing Seven Killing — when seeing the Killing, Peer or Robber should assist the self to combine with it. Avoid Jia and Yi, Yin and Mao abundant Wealth ruining the Seal; and Ren Gui Hurting and Eating generating Wealth to break the Seal. For Xin Day: born in Si or Wu months — the favors and aversions are the same as for Geng.
For Ren Day: born in You month gives the Proper Seal; Heavenly Virtue is in Yin, Monthly Virtue is in Geng. Shen month gives the Partial Seal; Heavenly Virtue is in Gui, Monthly Virtue is in Ren. Favorable is encountering Si Wu Proper Officer or Si Wu Seven Killing at the Hour — but Peer or Robber should be seen to assist the self and combine with the Killing. Avoid Bing Ding abundant Wealth ruining the Seal; and Jia Yi Hurting and Eating generating Wealth to break the Seal. For Gui Day: born in Shen or You months — the favors and aversions are the same as for Ren.
The classics say: "Criminal punishment is not incurred when the Seal and Heavenly Virtue share the same palace." And also: "Vegetarian and compassionate at heart — the Seal delights in encountering Heavenly Virtue."
For example, Grand Censor Meng Zhong's chart: Yi Hai, Ding Hai, Yi Chou, Bing Xu — here the Seal shares a palace with Heavenly Virtue.

This pattern greatly requires vigor and flourishing; most tabooed are Death and Extinction. For example, when Jia or Yi sees Hai or Zi as the Seal, seeing Metal perfects their benevolence and nurturing; if the original Seal sees Earth, it muddies the pattern. Traveling northwest, Officer and Seal bring fortune; but if at the Hour it leads back into Mao, Chen, Si places, or one travels into those places, Wealth and Seal fall into Death and Extinction — if the annual cycle then encounters Wealth overcoming the Seal, one will certainly enter the Yellow Springs without doubt.
When the Seal qualifies as a pattern, traveling the Great Fortune most taboos the Seal transforming into another pattern — when the Earthly Branches form a Triple Combination, either transforming into a Hurting Bureau, or a Wealth Bureau, or a Killing Bureau — this is most inauspicious. This means that during fortune travel, a Triple Combination forms another bureau (such as Hurting, Killing, or Wealth bureau), causing the Seal to no longer generate the self — a great taboo.
It is also said: Jia Day in Zi month, taboos the Ji Si hour, and fears Wu clashing. Yi Day in Hai month, taboos the Wu Chen hour, and fears Si clashing. Bing Day in Mao month, taboos the Xin Mao hour, and fears You clashing. Bing Day in Yin month, taboos the Geng Yin hour, and fears Shen clashing. Ding Day in Yin month, taboos the Geng Zi hour, and fears Shen clashing. Ding Day in Mao month, taboos the Xin Chou hour, and fears You clashing. Wu Day in Wu month, taboos the Gui Mao hour, and fears Zi clashing. Ji Day in Si month, taboos Ren Zi and Ren Xu hours, and fears Hai clashing. Geng Day in Wu month, taboos Ji Mao and Yi You hours, and fears Zi clashing. Geng Day in Si month, taboos Wu Yin hour, and fears Hai clashing. Xin Day in Si month, taboos Geng Yin and Jia Wu hours, and fears Hai clashing. Xin Day in Wu month, taboos Xin Mao and Yi Wei hours, and fears Zi clashing. Ren Day in You month, taboos Ding Wei hour, and fears Mao clashing. Ren Day in Shen month, taboos Bing Wu hour, and fears Yin clashing. Ren Day in You month, taboos Ding Si hour, and fears Mao clashing.
For all the above Day Masters, they all delight in seeing Peer Shoulders to dredge and circulate, and taboos seeing Eating and Hurting to melt the Seal and generate Wealth. If one commits this offense in fortune and also approaches a place where self and Seal decline while Wealth flourishes, then inevitably one becomes greedy for Wealth to ruin the Seal, being stripped of office and dismissed from position. Why is Robber Wealth favored? Because Robber can overcome Wealth, preventing the Wealth star from ruining the Seal.
The classics say: "When Seal and Wealth stars appear repeatedly, all affairs are hard to accomplish." And also: "When the Monthly Seal is pure without Wealth stars, the writing is worthy of the Golden List (top imperial examinations)." And: "When the self is vigorous and the Seal abounds, Wealth luck brings no harm. When the self is weak and there is a Seal, what injury can the Killing luck cause?" (If the Seal is abundant or forms a bureau, one need not fear Wealth coming to overcome it — like a stout and strong person not fearing to carry heavy burdens.) And: "When the Seal has root, one delights in encountering the Wealth star; when the Seal lacks root, one taboos seeing the Wealth luminary." The Officer Star is the root of the Seal. When the Seal has both Officer and Wealth, then Wealth generates Officer, Officer generates Seal, Seal generates self, self overcomes Wealth — circulating in a continuous cycle — hence glory and nobility, so there is no taboo. Also: "When the Seal has root, encountering Wealth brings fortune, encountering Officer brings prominence, encountering Combination brings obscurity, encountering Clash brings disaster."
The Ji Shan Pian says: "The life-giving Seal favors Officer luck and fears entering Wealth territory." And: "When born in a month that generates the Day Stem, in fortune travel one does not favor Wealth territory." The Du Bu says: "When the Seal lacks root, encountering the generating element brings fortune. If one sees many roots, even fortune is insufficient. When fortune luck encounters Wealth, the family is broken and office is lost." And: "When the Seal's root is light, in vigor one achieves glory and success. When the Seal's roots are many, in vigor one does not advance." And: "With Seal and Peer, one favors traveling into Wealth territory. With Seal but no Peer, one fears traveling into Wealth territory." And: "When the Seal encounters Wealth, Peer does not taboo it." The Tian Yuan says: "When the self sits in decline and fatigue, without support it cannot be aided. When the Heavenly Stems lack vitality, one should find flourishing in the middle and lower (Day and Hour pillars)."
The Tong Ming Fu says: "When the Seal encounters Killing, Ji Fu mends the six-dragon imperial robe." And: "When Wealth and Seal interlace, weigh the thickness and lightness of their inherent qi endowment." If Wealth is light and Seal qi is heavy, set aside Wealth and take the Seal — how noble this must be! If Seal qi is light and Wealth qi is heavy, set aside the Seal and take Wealth — although one turns one's back on official emolument, if branches and stems are both strong and flourishing, it turns into wealth and resources instead. Also: "When the Monthly Seal attaches to the Day with no Wealth qi, this is the golden list summoning worthies." And: "With writing distinguished and prominent, one ascends the Golden List with fragrant name." (Writing here means the Seal itself.)
The Yuan Ji says: "When the self is vigorous and the Seal abounds, one delights in traveling into Wealth places." And: "When the Seal flourishes and the Officer is generated, one's fame and voice reach extraordinary heights."
The Bao Jian says: "When the Seal is encountered repeatedly, one may be compared to Old Peng in longevity." The You Wei Fu says: "When the Seal encounters generation, the mother shall be worthy and noble." And: "In youth parted from mother — this is only because of excessive Wealth and a dying Seal." And: "With abundant Seal, descendants are sparse." The You Yuan Fu says: "When the Seal is clashed and the Wealth star is heavy, the body suffers the hardship of carriage dust." (For imagery purposes, the Seal carries the image of a carriage; if clashed, there is much likelihood of traffic accidents — even more accurate for the Partial Seal.)
The Bao Jian further says: "With four pillars rich in Seal and Wealth exposed, Tai Gong at eighty met King Wen." And: "When the Seal meets Wealth and the self has Peer and Robber, though Wealth be much, fortune is incomplete. Concealing the Seal and exposing Wealth with the self vigorous — merit and fame shine forth and fortune shall be complete." And: "When the Seal is injured by Wealth, the mother dies prematurely." And: "Greed for Wealth ruining the Seal — one delights in traveling into Peer and Robber territory."
The Ao Zhi says: "When the Seal is excessive, one does not favor again traveling into places of vigorous self." And: "When the Seal is wounded, one loses ancestral enterprise and is cast away from one's homeland." The Luo Yi Fu says: "When the Seal approaches the position of the son, one receives glory through one's son." The Qian Li Ma says: "When encountering the Seal, look to the Officer; and when one encounters the Officer, seven in ten are noble." And: "When the Wealth star breaks the Seal, one should encounter the palace of Peer and Robber." And: "When Wealth and Seal are mingled together, in the end one remains trapped in difficulty."
The Gu Sui Ge says: "**If Wealth comes to ruin the Seal, one dies by hanging or drowning in violent misfortune. In the Seal Taboo (Shen Yin Ge below), auspicious signs flourish; the red phoenix flies pairs into the Painting Hall.
{另外還有一个 Seal 怕 sees the Palatial chart「井栏斜义」waiting for detail…} If the Seal not meeting Wealth and the self not dying — as above, examine each item carefully.** The Shen Ming Fu says: "When a noble one wears the Seal, he shall certainly possess both civil and martial talents." The Jing Shen Fu says: "Having a Seal but no Officer, one enjoys ready-made pure and lofty blessings." And: "Knowing letters and capable of arms — Heavenly Virtue Nobleman, Seal Day Master, Virtue and Nobility both complete; wearing the Monthly Branch Seal is excellent." The Yu Xia Fu says: "When the Star of Umbrella (Flower of Romance) meets the Literary Star together, Guan Zhong serves as the great minister who assists hegemony."
The Zao Wei Lun says: "When the Seal meets the Umbrella Star, one dwells honorably in the Imperial Hanlin Academy." And: "When the Seal flourishes and the Officer is generated, one shall surely hold the balance of power." The Sou Sui Lun says: "When the Seal is excessive and the self even more vigorous, the person suffers punishments and clashes, primarily poor and solitary. If one obtains Officer, Killing, and Wealth in convergence, this too may elevate to a transcendent noble with support." The Ding Zhen Pian says: "The Seal obtaining the Robber Wealth is noble." And: "When Killing transforms into Seal, one ascends the high examinations early."
The Yao Jue says: "When Officer and Seal sit in places of punishment and clash, the mind is chaotic and the heart is busy." The Xiang Xin Fu says: "The Seal brings great wisdom, a full and comfortable body, and a compassionate heart." The Kai Hua Zhang says: "The Seal fears seeing the Wealth star; obtaining Sword Blade or Robber Wealth must turn it into fortune instead." The Yuan Hai says: "With much Wealth, use the Seal; in fortune travel, delight in Peer shoulder places. When the Seal guards the monthly outline, one needs the Killing star's assistance." The Wan Qi Fu says: "The Proper Seal seeing Wealth is inauspicious; encountering Officer is auspicious. Having Officer without Seal — though rich and noble, one suffers injury; having Seal without Officer — though glorious, there is loss. The Four Pillars sorrow at meeting Death and Extinction; the Three Foundations delight in seeing Long Life."
Poem 1: The Seal star's fortune is most extraordinary; Where else does the power Killing dwell? When both gather together at the original position, One's voice shakes the court, and the position is not false.
Poem 2: When the Seal is born dwelling with the Killing, The heart and gall become fierce and bold instead. When fortune proceeds, one obtains military rank — But one fears that in the end, the ending shall not be good.
Poem 3: Encountering the Seal in one's fate, fortune is not light; In youth, calm and composed, one enjoys what is ready-made. When vigorous and abundant with much Seal, blessing is especially thick; Receiving grace and inheriting protection, one establishes merit and fame.
Poem 4: The month encountering the Seal delights in the Officer star; When fortune enters the Officer country, blessing shall surely be clear. When Death and Extinction luck approaches, the self is disadvantaged; Traveling again into Wealth territory, nothing whatsoever is accomplished.
Poem 5: When the Seal suffers no loss, one enjoys complete fortune; As an official receiving inheritance, one has fields and gardens. Wearing official edicts, one's barns overflow with grain; Daily expenses and feasts cost ten thousand coins.
Poem 6: Layered Seal upon Seal — the pattern is pure and marvelous; Moreover, one must examine the branches meticulously. If the branches hold the Love Star and the stems carry Combinations, One becomes a wandering, dissolute prodigal breaking the family.
Poem 7: Seal upon Seal, one enjoys ready-made blessings; But the Eating God is feared, for it may secretly punish. If in early years one does not depart to the Yellow Springs, Then lonely suffering, exile from home, and lingering illness will bind tight.
Poem 8: When the Seal has many roots, one does not fear Wealth; Delighting in encountering Peer and Robber, fortune's embryo forms. If the Seal star is broken, the Officer comes to save it; Longevity and blessing are brought by fate from birth.
Poem 9: The Seal pattern does not favor the self being too vigorous; Even so, without incidents, it remains ordinary. Unless an original chart has many Officers and Killings, Then one has fame and voice serving as pillar and beam.
Poem 10: When the Seal stem repeatedly sees Peers, If fortune luck assists it, it must injure the self. Do not say this pattern has no marvel; When fortune enters Wealth territory, blessings and emoluments are real.
Poem 11: The Seal taboos traveling into Death and Extinction places; Most fears Wealth flourishing and falling into Wealth country. When year, fortune, and month branch all meet again, This then determines the person shall surely perish.
Poem 12: Persons born to the Seal with pure and vigorous qi, When Officers and Killings come frequently, the spirit sharpens instead. If the Seal travels to Death, Extinction, and Wealth places, Without rescue, in the end one becomes a person of the Yellow Springs.
Poem 13: Bing and Ding in Mao month with many Officers and Killings, If the Four Pillars lack root, one fears the Water country. Damp Wood cannot generate a fire without flame; For honor and glory to come, one must only go south.
Poem 14: Wood encountering Ren and Gui Water drifts and flows; A Day Master without root wastes the autumn in vain. If year and fortune encounter Wealth flourishing places, Misfortune turns to good fortune by meeting a prince or marquis.
Poem 15: Ren and Gui encountering Shen resent Fire breaking them; If the chart has Earth, then nobility is known. Northern Water fortune is all auspicious; But if one encounters Yin clashing, it is altogether unsuitable.
Poem 16: Ren and Gui encountering the month Metal as root, With Earth in stems and branches, fortune is genuine. With extreme Fire heaviness, one should go northwest; What comes from elsewhere should not look toward the child spirit.
Poem 17: Wu and Ji with a weak body delight in seeing Yin; Born encountering Officer and Killing, one is sure to be honored. If one encounters Fire and Earth, fame and profit flourish; When fortune reaches the west, beware of You and Shen.
Poem 18: Xin Day in Chou month has the Seal; Qian Gui and You correlate as the same kind of spirit. Xin Metal's auspicious Fire resents northwest; Gui Water favors Metal but fears Fire's invasion.
Poem 19: Ren and Gui born in the seventh and eighth months, With abundant Wealth and thick Earth, the north is marvelous. Without harm or break, one should travel Water; But Emperor Prosperity and Officer on the brink are, on the contrary, unsuitable.
Poem 20: Bing and Ding in Mao month with a vigorous body, Greatly fear Geng Xin, You, and Chou causing harm. Water fortune gradually brings wood and fire to flourish; Traveling into the west shall surely bring calamity and woe.
Poem 21: If the Seal is encountered within the month, One shall surely become a hero through ancestral protection. Skilled in many ways, rarely ill, one's plans should be great; Having the Seal without the Officer, fortune is still high. Above and below, one should best encounter the Ghost flourishing; And in the middle, one must never allow Wealth to cross. When fortune arrives at Death and Extinction, with no support for the body, One enters the Yellow Springs without any means of escape.
The Core Logic of the Seal Pattern can be summarized in one word: "generation" — 🌱 The Seal Star generates me, serving as the fountain of life. The entire theoretical framework of this pattern revolves around "who generates me, how I receive generation, and how the generating force remains unbroken."
Specifically, the ancients' understanding of the Seal Pattern comprises the following foundational concepts:
Seal as the Source of Vital Energy: The Seal represents the infusion of life force, much like parents to their children. This "generation" is not merely a Five Elements relationship but extends to real-world blessings of patronage, inheritance, education, and material wealth — "ready-made fortune."
Officer Generating Seal Brings Nobility: The Officer Star is the "root" of the Seal, as the Seal relies on the Officer for its own generation. An Officer without a Seal lacks protection and is vulnerable to the Hurting Officer; with both Officer and Seal, a noble circulation chain of "Officer → Seal → Self" is formed, enabling "profound fortune."
Wealth and Seal as Opposites: Wealth can destroy the Seal — this is the most critical unfavorable relationship in Seal Pattern theory. The Wealth Star represents active pursuit, business, and labor; the Seal Star represents ready-made enjoyment, preservation, and passive reception. These two fundamentally embody two different life attitudes and modes of resource acquisition.
Killing Generating Seal Brings Power: Although the Seven Killing is a凶神, the Seal can transform Killing into generation for the self, converting malice into authority. This is the special path in the Seal Pattern of "using Killing as a tool," signifying military rank, authority, and executive force.
Weak Self Is Valued: Other patterns generally favor a robust Day Master, but the Seal Pattern alone favors a relatively weak Self. Because the Seal's mission is to "generate the Self" — if the Self is already strong, the Seal's assistance becomes redundant and may even lead to austere isolation.
Heavenly and Monthly Virtue Enhancement: When the Seal coincides with the Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue stars, it is regarded as the most auspicious sign. These two "Virtue Deities" (beyond the Zi Wei Dou Shu system) signify turning misfortune into fortune, kind-heartedness, and moral protection.
Caution Against Seal Transfiguration: In the Fortune Cycle, the greatest danger is the Trio Combination transformation — when a Seal Pattern shifts into a Hurting Officer, Wealth, or Killing Pattern, the Seal ceases to generate the Self, and the original pattern is entirely destroyed.
Peer Stars Protecting the Seal: The Seal Pattern dreads Wealth damaging the Seal, while the Rob Wealth star can restrain Wealth — thus, Peer stars serve a protective function for the Seal. This forms a complete chain of checks and balances: Wealth harms the Seal → Rob Wealth controls Wealth → the Seal remains preserved.
What does the Seal Pattern mean in contemporary times? Translating this ancient metaphysical framework into modern terms, the core of the Seal Pattern can be understood as:
Modern counterparts of "Seal": Academic credentials, qualification certificates, professional titles, intellectual property, brand reputation, official recognition, parental financial support, and fixed assets such as real estate. These are all "ready-made fortune" — resources that continuously generate value without daily labor.
Modern meaning of "Officer Generating Seal": The Direct Officer represents institutions, platforms, and organizational empowerment. A Seal-pattern person who enters a strong organizational platform (Officer) will have that platform continuously provide resources and support (generating the Seal), enabling their abilities to flourish (Seal generating the Self). This is the modern reading of "with both Officer and Seal, profound fortune is achieved."
Modern warning of "Wealth Destroying the Seal": Excessive pursuit of short-term monetary gain (Wealth) may damage the long-term accumulated value of reputation, credentials, and brand equity (Seal). For example, fabricating credentials for quick money, or destroying a corporate brand for immediate profits — these are modern instances of "greed for Wealth destroying the Seal."
Modern meaning of "Seal Pattern favoring weak Self": Here, "weak Self" does not mean physical frailty but rather that the Day Master is not excessively strong. This implies: Seal-pattern individuals thrive in resource-rich environments rather than building everything from scratch alone. A weak Self with Seal is like a bright student in need of a mentor; a strong Self with excessive Seal is like an already opinionated person being over-protected, losing creativity as a result.
Modern manifestation of "excessive Seal leading to austere isolation": Those with too many resources and too much protection often lack deep connection with the practical realities of society. Like scholars living in an ivory tower — profoundly learned yet detached from reality. This is the modern version of "clear refinement and solitude."
Modern significance of "Killing Generating Seal": The Seven Killing represents pressure, challenge, and competition. The Seal's ability to transform Killing means finding a path of learning, growth, and transformation under pressure. In today's workplace, those who convert high-pressure environments into capability through systematic learning (Seal) are living embodiments of "Killing generating Seal."
How to apply Seal Pattern theory in modern life?
Career Direction Selection
Wealth Management Principles
Interpersonal Relationship Strategy
Health Risk Management
Hypothesis-Action-Review Methodology
The Seal Pattern embodies a profound philosophy of life:
The Philosophy of "Generation": The essence of the Seal is "the Five Elements generating me," which at the philosophical level points to the preconditions of existence. Ancient Chinese philosophy emphasizes that "the great virtue of Heaven and Earth is generation" — the Seal is precisely the Five Elements' expression of this principle. It reminds us: all achievement rests on being generated — we need education, support, and empowerment before we can truly realize our own value.
The Dialectic of "Receiving" and "Taking": The Seal Star governs "receiving" (ready-made fortune); the Wealth Star governs "taking" (active pursuit). The Seal Pattern's aversion to Wealth is essentially a warning against "taking without receiving." Modern consumerism and success culture emphasize "aggressively seize everything," but Seal philosophy teaches us: knowing how to accept and cherish what is already present is itself wisdom. Excessive ambition may destroy the very foundation one stands on.
The Two Sides of "Refinement" and "Solitude": Excessive Seal brings refined solitude — those with overly abundant resources tend to detach from reality. This reveals a deep paradox: excessive protection limits freedom; excessive resources weaken capability. Like plants in a greenhouse, blessed with perfect growing conditions yet deprived of the ability to weather storms. This is wisdom about "moderation."
The Transformative Wisdom of "Killing Generating Seal": The Seven Killing is inauspicious; the Seal is auspicious; the inauspicious is transformed through the auspicious. This embodies the dialectical thinking of "opposites complement each other" in Chinese philosophy. The pressures and harms of life (Killing), when processed through learning and internalization (Seal), can become ability and wisdom (Self). This is an ancient revelation about how suffering becomes wealth through cognitive transformation.
The Existential Dimension of "Rooted" and "Rootless": A rooted Seal welcomes Wealth; a rootless Seal dreads it. "Root" represents deep structural support. Philosophically, this suggests: whether one can withstand impact (Wealth) depends on whether one's foundation (Seal root) is firm. For the rooted, a storm only accelerates growth; for the rootless, the slightest tremor can be fatal.
| Concept | Relationship with the Seal Pattern |
|---|---|
| Direct Seal vs Indirect Seal | Direct Seal generates by the opposite polarity; Indirect Seal generates by the same polarity. Direct Seal governs orthodox education and the mother; Indirect Seal governs unconventional knowledge and the stepmother/ foster mother. Ancient texts often guard against the Indirect Seal seizing the Eating God, but in the Seal Pattern both are generally discussed together. |
| Officer Star | The root of the Seal. Officer generates Seal, giving it a source. The most auspicious configuration in the Seal Pattern is the presence of the Officer. |
| Seven Killing | Killing generates Seal; Seal transforms Killing. In the Seal Pattern, Killing signifies authority, military rank, executive force, and decisiveness. |
| Wealth Star | The nemesis of the Seal. Wealth destroys the Seal. However, when the Seal has deep roots, the interaction of Wealth and Seal can produce wealth and nobility. |
| Peer/Rob Stars | Protectors of the Seal. Rob Wealth controls Wealth, shielding the Seal from destruction. The Seal Pattern welcomes Peer stars for regulation. |
| Heavenly & Monthly Virtue | Auspicious stars. When aligned with the Seal, they endow Seal-pattern individuals with morality, blessings, and the ability to turn misfortune into fortune. |
| Star of Solitude (Hua Gai) | Associated with the Seal, signifying talent and lofty aloofness. When combined with the Seal, it indicates literary and artistic achievement. |
| Eating God | Favorable in the Seal Pattern. The Eating God can control Killing and protect the Self, and can also generate Wealth — but position and strength must be carefully considered. |
| Peach Blossom Star (Xian Chi) | When aligned with the Seal and combined with harmonizing elements, it may transform a "pure and noble" pattern into one of "romantic indulgence." |
Correspondence between the Seal Pattern and Personality Psychology
Contemporary researchers in Chinese metaphysics have attempted to map Seal Pattern characteristics onto the Big Five Personality Model — specifically "Openness" and "Agreeableness." The Seal person's "intelligence, wisdom, and kind nature" show significant similarity to high agreeableness and high openness. This offers a psychological dialogue interface for traditional personality readings.
Institutional Economics Reading of "Seal Relies on Officer"
The proposition that "an Officer without a Seal is not a true Officer; with both, profound fortune is achieved" finds its echo in modern organizational theory: a formal position (Officer), without institutional resource support (Seal), holds inherently incomplete power. The Seal Pattern theory is essentially an ancient articulation of the organizational principle that "power requires resource backing."
Application of Seal Pattern in Career Development Consulting
Some modern consultants have transformed Seal Pattern theory into a career aptitude assessment tool, analyzing an individual's preferred mode of resource acquisition (ready-made inheritance vs active creation), and offering career pathway recommendations accordingly. This transformation has been observed in the modernization of traditional culture practices in parts of East Asia.
Seal Pattern as a Modern Mapping of "Talent Development"
The "Seal equals education" correspondence allows Seal Pattern theory to be understood as an ancient model of talent development conditions. A strong Seal with a weak Self resembles "moldable talent" in need of good educational environments; a weak Seal with a strong Self resembles "self-taught success" better suited for learning through practice. This shows structural similarity to modern educational "environment-individual interaction theory."
Academic Debate: Re-examining the "Weak Self Preference" in Seal Patterns
The contemporary metaphysical community holds differing views on the traditional doctrine that "the Seal Pattern favors a weak Self." One view holds that "weak Self" here should be understood as "the Day Master having room to receive the Seal's generation" rather than genuine weakness. Another view argues it reflects the ancient yin-yang balance philosophy within pattern theory, with its core being "surplus supplies deficiency." For these differing perspectives, an open-minded attitude is advised, with validation through actual case studies as the primary guide.
