Chapter 7 of 7
格局章
Food God, also known as Progress God, Noble Star, or Longevity Star. The so-called Food God is the third figure in sequential order generated by the Day Master. For example, when Jia Day generates Bing Fire, or Yi Day generates Ding Fire, this constitutes the Food God. Jia Wood generating Bing Fire is originally the release of one's own vital energy; however, Bing Fire then generates Wu Earth, and Wu Earth happens to be Jia's Indirect Wealth. Indirect Wealth pertains to naturally bestowed heavenly fortune—wealth obtained without mental exertion, enjoying ready-made blessings. Jia Wood and Bing Fire share a father-son relationship—just as when a son is vigorous and robust, he can generate wealth and provision to support his parents—is this not the enjoyment of what naturally comes to pass? Furthermore, when Jia Wood encounters Geng Metal as Seven Killing, and encounters Wu Earth as Indirect Wealth, Bing Fire as Food God is precisely able to subdue Geng Metal, preventing it from harming Jia Wood; it can also generate Wu Earth Indirect Wealth, making it serviceable to Jia Wood. In any chart where Wealth and Killing appear together, as long as the Food God is vigorous, the Killing being subdued by Food dares not cause harm, and Wealth being generated by Food remains abundant and inexhaustible. Therefore, the Food God is also called the Longevity Star and Noble Star—indeed, there is great truth in this.
This pattern requires both the Day Master and Food God to be vigorous and free from clash or puncture; then the native enjoys abundant wealth and ample provisions, broad fortune and generous measure, full bodily form, leisurely self-sufficiency, with offspring and longevity. If Wealth and Food appear in the Year and Month pillars, it indicates ancestral blessing and flourishing family enterprise; if in the Day and Hour pillars, then wife and children receive the blessings. What is most feared is when the Seal (Mother) and Food God (Son) both decline to extinction—then neither achieves success. Hence the classic states: "The Food God should be fed when born vigorous and fed when vigorous; it cannot be fed when declining or when extinguished." Also: "When the Food God is born vigorous, it surpasses Wealth and Officer."
The Food God greatly fears the Indirect Seal, which is called "Inverted Eating" (the Harpy God seizing food); it indicates a person who starts well but ends poorly, with a crooked appearance, diminutive stature, constrained disposition, prone to anxiety and without accomplishment. For example, when Jia Day sees Bing Fire as Food God, if the chart contains Ren Water as Jia's Indirect Seal, Ren Water controls Bing Fire, preventing Bing Fire from generating Wu Earth and from subduing Geng Metal; then Jia Wood becomes controlled and loses wealth—how distressing this would be!
The Yuan Li Fu states: "When the Food God subdues Killing and encounters the Harpy, if not poor, then short-lived." The Yi Xing states: "When the Five Elements are declining or idle, encountering miraculous deliverance, calamity and misfortune must be light. When the Four Pillars contain balanced and harmonious influences, fortune and virtue increase in weight. If one encounters the God of Inverted Eating, it definitely indicates wealth being dissipated." It also states: "For Yang days, the Food God secretly combines with the Officer star; for Yin days, the Food God secretly combines with the Direct Seal. The Officer and Seal need not be visible; as long as the Food God is pure, it indicates nobility with official salary, and wealth with longevity. The Food God prefers only one, not too many, for too many will steal the original essence of the Day Master. The classic states: 'One Wood meeting repeated Fire positions is called the pattern of dispersed vital energy.'" Those with many Food Gods should travel Seal luck; those with few Food Gods should not travel Seal luck, because the Harpy God seizes food. Hence the Food God delights in vigorous Prosperity assistance—Month Command Establishing Prosperity being best, Hour Prosperity next. When additionally encountering Nobleman luck traveling to the Food God's vigorous and prosperous positions, great fortune and salary are emitted. What is feared is a weak Self with a vigorous Harpy. Although Wealth is pleasing to see in the chart, it should not be excessive; when excessive, it becomes impure, merely making one a wealthy man. When the Food God appears repeatedly, it transforms into the Hurting Officer, causing few children; even if there are children, they carry perverse and stubborn natures. Nor may it enter the Tomb; when it enters the Tomb, this is the Hurting Officer entering the Tomb, and longevity is difficult to extend. It greatly fears Emptiness; if Officer and Killing are additionally exposed, then the person becomes a great physician, shaman, numerologist, or one of the nine classes of artisans. If the Food God encounters control and also meets Emptiness, then there is no nobility. If additionally traveling Death or Extinction, or Harpy luck, then calamity arises from food and drink—regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, wanting for clothing and food, enduring hunger and cold.
When Jia Day has Bing Fire as Food God, it is favorable only if the chart lacks Ren, Gui, Hai, or Zi. If there is water influence, Bing Fire is itself restrained, subjugating to others; unable to stand independently, how can it generate wealth to nourish its father? If no such control exists, it also requires vigor and facing Prosperity. For example, if Bing Fire is born in the summer months, traveling through the southeast, Fire and Earth both vigorous, Jia Wood's Wealth must be substantial. If born in spring when Jia is vigorous, although Bing Fire obtains generation, the Earth influence of Wu and Ji is still thin; one must pass through southern regions where Fire and Earth are both vigorous before fortune is granted. Likewise, when Geng takes Ren Water as Food God, traveling through northern Water-vigorous regions, wealth acquired must be substantial; in eastern Wood-vigorous regions, fortune and blessing come rapidly.
Examining in detail: Geng takes Ren as Food; Ren's Longevity is in Shen, thus Shen region is judged weighty in fortune; Ren Water is abruptly defeated in You—arriving at You is already not favorable. Ren generates Jia Wood as Geng's Wealth—this is Wealth generated from one's own dispersal, not the Wealth of a wedded wife. When Jia arrives at You, Wood is trapped in the Metal region; Ren Water defeats itself—how can Wood assist in nourishing its father? This luck should be judged as mediocre. Traveling to Xu luck, if the stems encounter Ren and Jia, only half auspicious and half inauspicious should be judged. Encountering Wu may be judged as having calamity; seeing Geng may be judged as slight fortune. Hai luck should be called greatly auspicious. Zi luck with Gui Water as Hurting Officer—the Hurting weighing heavily, draining the self's vital energy; moreover, Geng dies at Zi and Jia is defeated at Zi—should be judged as generating misfortune and physical calamity. Traveling to Chou—Geng Metal's storage, the region of vigorous Water—and Ji Chou assists Geng and Jia, the place of coming of age; this decade may be judged as developing. Yin luck is also auspicious; Mao luck brings calamity. Other examples are deduced by analogy.
The Food God fears the Harpy, but there are also cases where it need not be feared. For instance, Ji Hai need not fear Ding as Inverted Eating, because Ding combines with Ren to transform into Wood, and Ren's Prosperity is in Hai; Bing Wu need not fear Jia as Inverted Eating, because Jia combines with Ji to transform into Earth, and Ji's Prosperity is in Wu; Yi Si need not fear Gui as Inverted Eating, because Wu and Gui transform into Fire, and Yi Si is also Fire; Gui Si need not fear Xin as Inverted Eating, because Bing and Xin transform into Water, and Gui's Nobility is in Si; Geng, as the head of all Yang, need not fear Wu as Inverted Eating, for Wu is the number of Yang influence returning to its source—seeing Wu is treated as a Joy God; Ji does not invert-eat Xin, being the source where Yin influence first disperses; Geng does not invert-eat Ren, being the source where Yang influence first disperses; Xin has Ding and need not fear Ji as Inverted Eating, because Ding Fire nourishes Xin Metal—moreover, wherever Ding exists, Ji Earth is present; Yin and Yang interfere, obtaining the assistance of pure fortune. Thus all six Xin people most importantly require Ding; tracking from Yin to Xin's original Prosperity position, one then knows Ding is used as Prosperity. Additionally, if the month is Metal-type, Ji Earth has Longevity within Fire—thus one knows Fire is needed for literary nobility. Metal has no parent; borrowing from Fire's position, it has the influence of a parent.
Someone asks: Why is the position one removed from the Ten Stems called the Food God? Xi Yin answers: Jia and Ji transform into Earth, thus the Food is Bing and Xin; Bing and Xin transform into Water, thus the Food is Wu and Gui; Wu and Gui transform into Fire, thus the Food is Geng and Yi; Geng and Yi transform into Metal, thus the Food is Ren and Ding; Ren and Ding transform into Wood, thus the Food is Jia and Ji. The transformed influence controls, and this is eating. The Food God is the convergence of fortune and salary for the Ten Stems. When a noble person obtains it, they become prominent and abundantly provided; when a common person obtains it, they have ample resources and sufficient means. In fortune-gathering positions, official rank is exalted and salary thick; in calamity-gathering positions, rank is humble and fate is thin. For example, taking Jia Zi for discussion: eating Bing Zi is the nobility of the Fortune Star; eating Bing Yin is the Prosperity of Longevity, Prosperity and Horse in the same place, the nobility of the Food God Academy; Bing Chen is Direct Seal; Bing Wu is Self-Punishment breaking fate; Bing Shen is controlling the body breaking Prosperity; Bing Xu is body-declining breaking Emptiness; other stems are deduced by example. If encountering vigorous and prosperous, Storage, Seal, Heavenly Nobleman, Heavenly Officer, Flowery Canopy, Literary Star, Academy, Officer Seal, Prosperity Horse and the like—these are fortune-gathering positions; encountering control, breakage, Emptiness, evil Killings, punishment and harm, declining and idle, death and extinction—these are calamity-gathering positions. If there is Flowery Canopy or Direct Seal, though lacking, there is some increase and cultivation; without Academy or Post Horse, though abundant, it is diminished by half. Distinctions between pure and noble families versus arrogant and extravagant clans are made by these criteria.
Jia and Yi eat Bing and Ding, positioned upon Yin, Mao, Si, and Wu; Bing and Ding eat Wu and Ji, positioned upon Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei; Wu and Ji eat Geng and Xin, positioned upon Si, Wu, Shen, and You; Geng and Xin eat Ren and Gui, positioned upon Shen, You, Hai, and Zi; Ren and Gui eat Jia and Yi, positioned upon Hai, Zi, Yin, and Mao—this is called the Food God seeing vigor and prosperity, additionally bearing Prosperity and Horse in vigorous phase. For civil officials, this means holding the two highest secretarial posts; for military officials, it means holding regional command. Without it, one still has abundant wealth and goods. When Food God and Prosperity appear complete together, an orderly arrangement of the Four Pillars is most excellent.
The Zhi Mi Fu states: "When the Food God is in one place, it should use one in place of three; if encountering leisure and idleness, thrice repeated does not match a single one. When the Food is divided into three or two, Wealth is like autumn wind scattering leaves. When the Harpy meets one instance, fortune is like morning fungi fading by dusk. If the Food God encounters idle emptiness, generally it is difficult to escape emaciation and despondency." The Li Yu Ge states: "When the child repays nurturing at the time of encountering Zi Jian, and further encounters the Nobleman, delighted to meet. Establishing Officer again in the Nobleman's village—selected through the Phoenix Tower and Luan Terrace transformations." "Repaying nurturing" means when Year, Month, Day, and Hour all eat upward from below; seeing Heavenly Nobleman, Officer Seal, and auspicious Killing indicates nobility.
The Hu Zhong Zi states: "The Food God dislikes inversion—contending for sips, contending for meals; when they suddenly arrive together, there is lack of broth and lack of milk. When there is surplus, food spreads ten feet square before one; when insufficient, one has but a single bamboo basket of rice and a single gourd of soup." It also states: "When inverted eating is committed in the fate, one is much disturbed by others; when heavily repeated, in young children it indicates lack of milk, in the elderly lack of food. When the Direct Food has surplus, one is wealthy and noble; when contending Food is insufficient, one is poor and base." Surplus is like a Jia person obtaining two or three Bing; insufficiency is like the chart having two Jia with only one Bing. It also states: "Whenever the Hour stem inverts-eats the Year stem, it is called 'morning swallowing,' indicating harm to children. When Day and Hour both eat, it indicates injury to the head and face, and additionally harm to the mother. After death, there is no son to see one to the grave." If within swallowing there is further swallowing—like a Jia person seeing Ren in Day or Hour, then additionally encountering Geng—indicates dying destitute in a ditch, though with stem combination resolving it, the severity is mitigated.
The Du Bu states: "When the Food God is born vigorous, it surpasses Wealth and Officer. When turbid, it is base; when pure, it is illustrious. When repeated, it is insufficient, and should be classified as Hurting Officer. When vital energy is leaked and useless, analyze carefully in its many aspects." The Xiang Xin Fu states: "The Food God excels at eating and drinking; the body is stout and one delights in singing." The Kou Jue states: "The Food God bearing vigor is virtuous." The Ao Zhi Fu states: "When Month Command obtains Food with a vigorous and healthy body, one enjoys eating and drinking, with a plump and well-fed appearance. When the Four Pillars have auspicious stars supporting, one amasses gold and accumulates jade, with resounding fame." It also states: "In places where the Food God is vigorous, moving Wealth is abundant; if additionally encountering the Partial Seal controlling the Food God, know that if not short-lived, one must be reduced to begging." The You Wei Fu states: "When the Food God is vigorous and prosperous, old age brings ever higher longevity." The Yuan Li Fu states: "When Food occupies the front and Killing occupies the rear, achievements and fame are illustrious." The Bao Jian Fu states: "When the month reveals the Food God and the hour reveals the Officer, one achieves honor in the censorial office, assisting the nation's ministers." The Mi Jue states: "A single Food God surpasses Wealth and Officer. For Wu Day with Geng Hour, Fire vigor is not suitable." The San Che states: "The Food God fears the depletion of Food and the emptiness of Food; most delights in the Storehouse of Food and the Prosperity of Food." The Xin Jing states: "When the Longevity Star finds its proper combination, this saying is not false. A single Food God with the Self seated upon Officer—one becomes a chief minister or high noble." The Wan Qi Fu states: "The Food God is named the Auspicious Star; subduing Killing, it is called the Longevity Star. When the Stem is strong and Food is vigorous, one is a man of wealth and nobility; when Food is vigorous but the Self is weak, one is a frustrated person. When encountering Wealth vigor, food spreads ten feet square before one; when encountering Seal income, the cooking pot grows dust at its base. Seeing one instance merits bronze bells and ritual ting vessels; seeing two or three instances, one dwells in a mean alley with a bamboo basket and gourd. When the Goat Blade is heavily approached, a lifetime of toil and drudgery. When punishment and control converge, a lifetime of restless wandering."
The ancient song states: "When the Food God subdues Killing, auspiciousness beyond compare; Wealth vigorous, wife honored, and children stronger still. If within the chart one must swallow and devour the Killing—surely one is destined to assist the sovereign in his golden hall."
Again: "When the Food God encounters Prosperity, it is called the Heavenly Kitchen; when rushed, controlled, emptied, and the Officer and Killing are absent—traveling Dead and Extinct luck to the Partial Seal's ground, the Longevity Star joined brings blessings interwoven."
Again: "When the Food God's food recedes, one delights in mist and clouds; when the Food Horse's mind races, one founds a separate household. Or when eating the Nobleman together with eating Prosperity—fame high, rank heavy, fortune boundless."
Again: "The Food God with Seal income should not be encountered; only seeing Wealth and Officer brings fortune ever greater. The Food God delights in traveling to the Self's vigorous ground; encountering the Harpy or the Shoulder all becomes emptiness."
Again: "When the Food God is born vigorous, most praiseworthy; only traveling Water, Wood, Earth, and Metal is fine. If Officer and Killing are not mixed in further—a lifetime of clothing and provisions, fully glorious."
Again: "When the Food God occupies the front and Killing occupies the rear—a lifetime of clothing and provisions, fortune the heaviest. When Killing approaches the Food God, there is still misfortune—all day long one wanders futilely in the dusty world."
Again: "When the Longevity origin rises—most extraordinary; what worry of Seven Killing in the Year and Hour? Repelling the fierce and subduing the violent, the Stem-head vigorous—this is a mortal child of wealth and nobility."
Again: "When a Jia person sees Bing, it is originally stealing vital energy; but Bing going to generate Wealth is called the Food God. Broad-minded and corpulent, clothing and provisions thick; if approaching the Partial Seal, it indicates solitary poverty."
Again: "When the Food God has vital force, it surpasses Wealth and Officer; first require strength and vigor in the original Stem. If instead one is harmed and the Food is snatched away—busy and bitter, woes come in a thousand forms."
Again: "When the Food God is born vigorous without punishment or control—meeting this pattern in fate surpasses Wealth and Officer. Additionally obtaining Strength with vigor, meeting Wealth ground—in youth's prime one ascends the golden steps."
Again: "When the Food God is unimpaired, longevity stretches long; when a stepmother encounters it, it becomes unbearable. If there is no Partial Wealth to come to the rescue—fate is like autumn grass bearing winter frost."
Again: "When the Food God appears in the Month, it is called the Heavenly Kitchen; when a human fate encounters it, wealth and surplus abound. Most feared is the Harpy coming to visibly diminish fortune—most hated is the rush that secretly extinguishes it. Generating Wealth and transforming the Ghost, additionally without illness; subduing Killing for auspiciousness, truly there is stored provision. A scholar encountering this passes the examinations; official appointment to high position, receiving the heavenly edict."
Combining the various schools' teachings, the Food God pattern's preferences and taboos are entirely contained herein.
The essence of the Food God pattern is a structural model of releasing excellence and generating wealth, with the son supporting the mother. What the Day Master generates is the Food God; the Food God then generates the Wealth star, forming a generative chain of "Day Master → Food God → Wealth Star." The key to this chain lies in whether the middle link (the Food God) is vigorous: when the Food God is vigorous, wealth flows endlessly; when the Food God declines, the chain breaks.
The Food God has three core functions:
| Function | Mechanism | Symbolism |
|---|---|---|
| 🔥 Subduing Killing to protect the Self | The Food God controls the Seven Killing, protecting the Day Master from harm | Softness transforming rigidity, wisdom transforming danger |
| 💰 Generating Wealth for prosperity | The Food God generates the Wealth star, creating sources of wealth | Monetizing skills, outputting value |
| 🧘 Releasing excellence to nourish character | The Day Master's vital energy flows outward in an orderly manner through the Food God | Talent manifesting externally, peaceful disposition |
Among the three, subduing Killing brings nobility, generating Wealth brings riches, and releasing excellence brings peace. The reason the Food God pattern was praised by the ancients as "surpassing Wealth and Officer" is precisely that it combines the functions of Wealth and Officer while having fewer of their dangers—Wealth must be sought personally, Killing must be resisted personally, yet the Food God automatically generates Wealth and automatically subdues Killing, without mental exertion.
From a contemporary perspective, the Food God pattern can be understood as a structured description of a "productive personality type":
But the negative aspect of the Food God lies in excessive output: when the Food God becomes too many, it transforms into the Hurting Officer, meaning overproduction with diluted quality—just as with today's information overload—a writer producing ten thousand characters daily yet saying nothing substantial will only exhaust themselves. The admonition that "the Food God prefers only one" translates in the modern context to focused deep cultivation rather than dispersed output.
Inverted Eating (Harpy God seizing food) manifests most typically in modern times as: being deprived by the environment of the opportunity to output—talent suppressed, work rejected, platforms shut down, discourse taken away. When a person's core abilities cannot be exercised, naturally there will be no "abundant food and thick wealth."
Chart Analysis Key Points:
Balance between Day Master and Food God: A vigorous Day Master with a vigorous Food God is the optimal configuration, representing abundant productive capacity with powerful output. A vigorous Day Master with a weak Food God is like having great talent but struggling to express it—one needs major luck cycles and annual phases to supplement the Food God's strength. A weak Day Master with a vigorous Food God represents "vigorous Food with declining Self"—output overdraws the substrate, requiring the Seal star to support the body.
Coordination with the Wealth star: The Food God pattern delights in seeing the Wealth star, forming the complete chain of "Food God generating Wealth." But Wealth should not be excessive; when Wealth is plentiful, the chain becomes overloaded, the Food God is too busy generating Wealth to subdue Killing, and the pattern shifts from pure to turbid.
Position of Officer and Killing: Food God subduing Killing most delights in Food God in front with Seven Killing behind (Food occupies the front, Killing occupies the rear), representing acquiring ability first, then encountering challenges, handling them with composure. If Killing approaches the Food God, pressure bears down; though resolvable, the process is arduous.
Interference from the Harpy Seal: The Partial Seal (Inverted Eating) is the foremost taboo god of the Food God pattern. In practical chart reading, if the original chart has the Harpy Seal seizing Food, one must examine whether the Wealth star controls the Harpy (Partial Wealth controlling Partial Seal); if so, there is rescue within the misfortune. If not, then a lifetime of unrecognized talent and ill-timed fortune.
Practical Application Suggestions:
The most profound philosophical implication of the Food God pattern lies in its revelation of the identity of giving and receiving.
The Day Master generates the Food God, which appears to "release vital energy"—consuming the self; but the Food God generates Wealth, and Wealth in turn nourishes the Day Master. Giving is the precondition of receiving—this is the numerological expression of the Dao De Jing's principle: "The more one does for others, the more one has; the more one gives to others, the more one possesses." The reason the Food God pattern indicates "broad-minded and corpulent, leisurely and self-sufficient" is precisely that such people naturally understand that "output is the best accumulation."
Meanwhile, the function of the Food Deity controlling the Seven Killings also embodies a kind of non-confrontational survival wisdom: in the face of the Seven Killings (threats, pressure, competition), the Food Deity's approach is neither to endure forcefully (as the Peer Stars resist the Killing) nor to escape (as the Seal Star transforms the Killing), but to dissolve it through sustained creative output. This is analogous to the mechanism of "sublimation" in modern psychology—transforming aggression into productivity.
The reason why the Robbing Star seizing the Food Deity is deemed inauspicious is essentially that it severs this path of sublimation. When a person's creativity is suppressed, their expression is deprived, and their work is negated, internal energy cannot be channeled out in an orderly manner and instead turns inward into anxiety, depression, and self-attack. In numerology, "the inverted Food Deity indicates solitude and poverty," which modern psychology can interpret as spiritual impoverishment resulting from blocked creativity.
| Concept | Relationship with the Food Deity |
|---|---|
| Hurting Officer | The Food Deity is yang-generates-yang or yin-generates-yin; the Hurting Officer is yang-generates-yin or yin-generates-yang. The Food Deity is gentle, while the Hurting Officer is fierce. When the Food Deity is overly strong, it resembles the Hurting Officer |
| Indirect Seal / Robbing Star | The Indirect Seal overcomes the Food Deity, known as "Inverted Food" or "Robbing Star Seizing the Food Deity"—the primary nemesis of the Food Deity |
| Seven Killings | What the Food Deity overcomes. The Food Deity controlling the Killing forms a noble configuration—one of the highest-level arrangements of the Food Deity pattern |
| Lu Star | When the Food Deity sits on the Lu Star (e.g., Jia eats Bing, Bing's Lu is in Si), it is called "Heavenly Kitchen Food Lu," indicating deep fortune and blessings |
| Tianyi Nobleman | When the Food Deity carries the Nobleman, it indicates that one receives noble support due to one's skills |
| Flower Canopy | When the Food Deity carries the Flower Canopy, it indicates exceptional technical mastery but a tendency toward aloofness |
| Void | When the Food Deity falls into the Void, it is called "Food Void," indicating that one's talents find no place to be utilized |
| Tomb/Storehouse | When the Food Deity enters the Tomb (e.g., Bing entering Xu), it indicates buried talents and impaired health |
