黄帝内经·素问
Overall Paraphrase
The Yellow Emperor said: Yin and Yang are the fundamental law of Heaven and Earth, the general principle under which all things are classified, the source of all change, the beginning of growth and decay, and the abode of Shenming (the inner governor of life activities). Treatment of disease must proceed from the root—Yin and Yang. Thus, Yang qi accumulates and rises to form Heaven; Yin qi accumulates and descends to form Earth. Yin governs stillness; Yang governs activity. Yang promotes generation; Yin promotes growth. Yang governs destruction; Yin governs storage. Yang transforms into invisible function (qi); Yin condenses into tangible form. Extreme cold transforms into heat; extreme heat transforms into cold. Cold congeals to produce turbid Yin; heat disperses to produce clear Yang. If clear Yang fails to rise and instead resides below, it causes sun‐xie (loose stool with undigested food); if turbid Yin fails to descend and instead resides above, it causes abdominal distension. Such are the manifestations of abnormal Yin–Yang movement and the adverse or favorable progression of disease.
Therefore, clear Yang ascends to become Heaven; turbid Yin descends to become Earth. Earthly qi evaporates upward to become clouds; Heavenly qi condenses downward to become rain. Rain derives from Earthly qi; clouds derive from Heavenly qi. Applied to the human body: clear Yang issues from the upper orifices (ears, eyes, mouth, nose), while turbid Yin issues from the lower orifices (urethra and anus). Clear Yang disperses outward to the Couli (interspaces between skin and muscle); turbid Yin returns inward to the Five Zang Organs. Clear Yang fills the four limbs; turbid Yin rests in the Six Fu Organs.
Water pertains to Yin; Fire pertains to Yang. Yang manifests as invisible qi; Yin manifests as tangible flavor (the essence of food and drink). The five flavors nourish the physical body, yet the body depends on qi for maintenance. Qi transforms to produce Jing (the essential substance of the body), and Jing in turn generates new functional activity. The formation of Jing relies on the transformation of qi; the nourishing of the body relies on the five flavors. Functional activity produces Jing, and qi further nourishes the body. However, an excess of the five flavors damages the body; disordered qi movement impairs Jing. Jing can transform into qi, yet qi can be harmed by excessive flavors. Yin-natured flavors discharge from the lower orifices; Yang-natured qi disperses from the upper orifices. Thick flavors are pure Yin; thin flavors are Yin within Yang. Thick qi is pure Yang; thin qi is Yang within Yin. Thick flavors have a purging action; thin flavors have a promoting action. Thin qi has a dispersing action; thick qi has a heat-generating action.
🔥 Vigorous fire (excess Yang heat) consumes healthy qi; 🌿 gentle fire (moderate Yang qi) nourishes healthy qi. Vigorous fire erodes healthy qi; healthy qi depends on gentle fire for warmth and nourishment. Vigorous fire disperses healthy qi; gentle fire promotes its growth. Flavors that are acrid and sweet, with dispersing action, pertain to Yang; flavors that are sour and bitter, with vomiting or purging action, pertain to Yin. When Yin dominates, Yang is harmed and illness ensues; when Yang dominates, Yin is harmed and illness arises. Yang excess manifests as heat signs; Yin excess manifests as cold signs. Extreme cold transforms into heat; extreme heat transforms into cold.
Cold pathogens damage the physical form; heat pathogens damage the qi aspect. When qi is injured, pain results; when the form is injured, swelling results. Thus, if pain precedes swelling, it indicates qi injury affecting the form; if swelling precedes pain, it indicates form injury affecting qi.
💨 Wind pathogen predominating causes tremor of the limbs; 🔥 heat pathogen predominating causes redness and swelling; dryness pathogen predominating causes desiccation; ❄️ cold pathogen predominating causes edema; 🌊 dampness pathogen predominating causes watery diarrhea.
Heaven has four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) and five phases (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), through which it generates and stores, and produces the five climates: cold, heat, dryness, dampness, and wind. Humans have five Zang Organs that transform to produce five qi, giving rise to five emotions: joy, anger, worry, sorrow, and fear. Therefore, excessive anger and joy harm the qi aspect; excessive cold and heat harm the physical form. Violent anger injures Yin (blood); violent joy injures Yang (qi). Qi moves contrary upward, fills the meridians, and departs from the body's normal state. When joy and anger are not moderated, and cold and heat attack excessively, the foundation of life is not secure. Thus, when Yin is excessive, it necessarily transforms toward Yang; when Yang is excessive, it necessarily transforms toward Yin. Hence it is said: contraction of cold in Winter leads to febrile conditions in Spring; contraction of wind in Spring leads to such‐xie in Summer; contraction of Summer heat leads to malaria in Autumn; contraction of dampness in Autumn leads to coughing in Winter.
The Yellow Emperor asked: I have heard that the sages of antiquity discussed the form of the human body, distinguished the positions of the viscera, examined the origins, course, and connections of the meridians, merged and understood the six coordinate pairings (of the twelve meridians), and each follows its own channel trajectory. The qi points each have names and positions; the ravine and valley (interconnections) and the bones each have their origins; the counterflow and smooth flow within the divisions each have their regulating principles; the changes of the four seasons and Yin–Yang each follow their laws; the correspondence between internal and external has its surface/interior relationship. Are these statements true?
Qi Bo replied: In the East, the season is Spring. Yang qi ]>rise and generates wind. Wind enables grass and trees to grow, so wind generates Wood. Wood can generate sour flavor; sour flavor nourishes the Liver; Liver blood nourishes the sinews; the sinews generate the Heart (Liver Wood gives rise to Heart Fire); the Liver opens into the eyes. This generative force, in Heaven, manifests as the profound and subtle; in humans, it manifests as comprehension of the laws; on Earth, it manifests as the generation of all things. Transformation generates the five flavors; the Dao generates prudence; the profound generates Shenming. In the divine permutations: in Heaven it is wind; on Earth it is Wood; in humans it is sinews; in the five Zang Organs it is Liver; in the five colors it is greenish-blue; in the five tones it is jiao; in the five voicing sound it is cry; in change it is clasp (convulsions and clutching); in the organs it is the eyes; in the five flavors it is sour; in emotion it is anger. Anger harms the Liver; sorrow overcomes anger. Wind harms the sinews; dryness overcomes wind. Excess sour flavor harms the sinews; pungent flavor overcomes sour.
In the South, the season is Summer. Yang qi flourishes, producing heat. Heat makes fire flare upward, so heat generates Fire. Fire can produce bitter flavor; bitter flavor nourishes the Heart; the Heart generates the Spleen (Heart Fire gives rise to Spleen Earth); the Heart opens into the tongue. In Heaven, it is heat; on Earth, it is fire; in humans, it is the blood vessels; in the five vowels departments, the Heart; in the five colors, red; in the five tones, zhi; in the five [voicing sound], laughter; in change, worry; in the orifices, the tongue; in the five flavors, bitter; in the emotions (as [some] derive), joy. Excessive joy harms the Heart; fear overcomes joy; heat harms qi; cold overcomes heat; bitter flavor harms qi; salty flavor overcomes bitter.
In the Center, the season is the long Summer. The climate is damp, generating dampness. Dampness enables Earthly qi to flourish, so dampness generates Earth. Earth can produce sweet flavor; sweet flavor nourishes the Spleen; the Spleen generates the muscles; the muscles generate the Lungs (Spleen Earth gives rise to Lung Metal); the Spleen opens into the mouth. In Heaven it is dampness; on Earth it is earth; in humans it is flesh; in the five Storage–Manor (Zang), Spleen; in the five colors, jaundice (yellow); in the five tones, gong; in the five [voicing patterns], singing; in change, retching; in the portals-organs (Orifies), the mouth; in flavors, sweet; in emotions, thinking (or overthinking). Thinking harms the Spleen; anger overcomes thinking. Dampness harms flesh; wind overcomes dampness. Excess sweet flavor harms flesh; sour flavor overcomes sweet.
In the West, the season is Autumn. The climate is dry, producing dryness. Dryness enables Metal qi to be purged, so dryness generates Metal. Metal produces pungent flavor; pungent flavor nourishes the Lungs; the Lungs engender the skin and body hair; the skin and body hair engender the Kidneys (Lung Metal generates Kidney Water); the Lungs open into the nose. In Heaven it is dryness; on Earth it is metal; in humans it is skin and body hair; in the five Zang Organs, the Lungs; in the five colors, white; in the five tones, shanger− a metal tone; in the five [emission/sounds], crying; in pathological changes/he as transformations—coughing; in orifices, the nose; in flavors, pungent-hot; in complex-emotions, melancholy. Worry harms the Milliers-huels; it consumes qi. Joy surmount grief, and as overcome worry—two patterns over grieved: joy itself for controlling griot-war; only via joy v and warmt ? Moreover, the qi … additional? Allright: does also also change-by other established but general dynamics . (corclusion-in the core interpretation.)
