In Heaven, there are the degrees of the movements of the stars; on Earth, there are rivers and waterways; in the human body, there are the channels (main pathways for qi and blood circulation). When the climate of Heaven and Earth is mild and warm, the waters flow calmly; when Heaven and Earth are frozen in cold, the waters congeal and become sluggish; when heat is intense, the waters seethe and overflow; when violent winds suddenly arise, the waters surge in towering waves. The invasion of pathogenic Qi into the channels follows the same principle: cold causes blood to coagulate, heat causes qi and blood to become floating, slippery, and thin. Deficiency pathogens (pathogenic qi that takes advantage of the body's weakness) invade the body, just like a great wind encountering a river. In areas where the pulse in the channels is palpable, when pathogenic Qi arrives, it can rise like waves.
