黄帝内经·素问
Overall Paraphrase
The Yellow Emperor asked: I have already understood the normal and abnormal changes of the Six Qi, the Qi of Victory (胜气) and the Qi of Revenge (复气), as well as the sequential actions of the sweet, bitter, pungent, salty, sour, and bland flavors. However, regarding the changes of the Five Movements (五运) — some follow Heaven's Qi, some oppose it, some follow Heaven's Qi but oppose Earth's Qi, some follow Earth's Qi but oppose Heaven's Qi, some harmonize with each other, and some do not — I have not yet grasped them. I wish to understand the laws of Heaven and Earth, comply with geographical conditions, harmonize the Five Movements, regulate their changes, align the upper (Heaven) and lower (Earth) so they do not disrupt each other's order, ensure the ascending and descending of Heaven's and Earth's Qi are appropriate, ensure the Five Movements do not deviate from their normal patterns, and treat according to the correct nature and flavor. How should one follow or oppose?
Qi Bo bowed twice and replied: What a profound question! This is the general outline of Heaven and Earth and the root of all changes. Were it not for a sage and enlightened ruler, who could exhaust such ultimate principles? Though I am not particularly wise, allow me to explain these principles so that they may endure forever without fading.
The Yellow Emperor said: I hope you can deduce and organize these principles, arrange them by category and order, assign each to its domain, distinguish the governing influences, manifest the qi numbers, and elucidate the correct transformations. May I hear your explanation?
Qi Bo said: First, determine the year to clarify the Qi and Movement of that year. Then, the operation of the Five Movements — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth — and the governing changes of the Six Qi — Cold, Summerheat, Dryness, Dampness, Wind, Fire — become clear. Thus, the Way of Heaven can be perceived, the Qi of the people can be harmonized, and the contraction and expansion of Yin and Yang lie before our eyes without confusion. The qi numbers that can be calculated — allow me to explain them one by one.
The Yellow Emperor asked: What about the year when Solar Taiyang governs the heavens?
Qi Bo said: This pertains to the years Chen and Xu (辰戌). When Taiyang governs heaven, Tai Jiao governs the Movement, and Taiyin is in the springs, such as in the years Renchen and Renxu. Its Movement is Wind; its transformation manifests as rumbling disruption and the splitting open of things (🌿 all things breaking through the earth); its change manifests as tremors, breaking, pulling, and uprooting; its disease manifests as vertigo, body shaking, and the eyes refusing to open.
Next, Qi Bo detailed the sequence of the Five Movements’ rotation and their corresponding relations with that year's transformation, phenology, and pathology, summarizing the overall pattern for the year when Taiyang governs the heavens:
Generally, in years when Taiyang governs the heavens, the transforming Qi operates earlier than the season. Heaven's Qi is harsh and killing, Earth's Qi is quiet, cold qi condenses in the vast void, and Yang Qi cannot exercise its commanding role. Water and Earth Qi cooperate with each other, corresponding above to Chenxing (Mercury) and Zhenxing (Saturn). The grains governed are black and yellow; its government is solemn, and its Qi moves slowly. Cold Qi greatly prevails, there is no Yang heat in rivers and marshes, and Fire Qi must wait for its opportunity to arise. Shaoyang Ministerial Fire holds sway in the middle, and seasonal rain will then arrive. When sufficient rain has fallen, it disperses and returns to Taiyin Dampness Earth. Clouds head toward the North Pole; dampness is then distributed, moistening the myriad things. Cold qi is spread above, thunder moves below, and cold and damp Qi intertwine in the hub of Qi exchange.
The people are susceptible to cold-damp diseases, manifesting as muscle atrophy, flaccid withering of both feet without control, loose stool, and heat in the blood. The initial Qi (from Greater Cold to Spring Equinox): Earth's qi migrates, the climate becomes greatly warm, plants and trees flourish early, and the people are susceptible to epidemics, warm disease erupts with symptoms of fever, headache, vomiting, and skin ulcerations. The second Qi (from Spring Equinox to Lesser Fullness): Great coolness arrives instead; the people feel miserable; plants and trees encounter cold; Fire qi is suppressed; the people suffer from qì stagnation causing middle burning fullness, and cold begins to develop. The third Qi (from Lesser Fullness to Greater Heat): The Qi governing heaven is distributed; cold qi prevails, rain falls, and the people feel cold but experience internal heat; symptoms include abscesses, diarrhea, heart vexation with heat, and clouded oppression; if untreated, death may occur. The fourth Qi (from Greater Heat to Autumn Equinox): Wind-damp Qi contend, wind transforms into rain, the myriad things grow, develop, and mature; the people suffer from severe heat, qi deficiency, muscle atrophy, foot withering, intestinal bleeding with mucopurulent discharge. The fifth Qi (from Autumn Equinox to Lesser Snow): Yang qi recovers, plants and trees flourish and mature, and the people feel comfortable. The terminal Qi (from Lesser Snow to Greater Cold): The qi in the springs (在泉) circulates properly, dampness commands run, yin qi condenses in the vast void, dust and gloom blanket the open fields, the people feel miserable, cold wind arrives, and pregnant women encountering this Qi may suffer fetal death.
Therefore, for the principle of nurturing/regulating this year: it is appropriate to use bitter flavors to dry dampness and warm and disperse. One must reduce its congested qi, first nourish the source of transformation, suppress excessive Movement, support the restrained side, and do not allow Qi Movement to become overly violent and generate disease. Eat the year's grains (岁谷) to preserve genuine qi, avoid deficiency evil to stabilize right qi. Adjust the dosage according to the similarity or difference of the qi movements — use drying and warming transformation for similar cold-damp, drying-dampness transformation for different cold-damp; use more where similar, less where different. For cold-cool medicinals, avoid the cold season; for warm-heat medicinals, avoid the hot season. Dietary regulation follows the same principle. If there is borrowed qi, treat it in reverse; violating this principle leads to illness — this is what is called the importance of "timeliness".
The Yellow Emperor said: Good. What about the year when Yangming governs the heavens? Qi Bo said: This pertains to the years Mao and You (卯酉)… (The following section, according to the same framework, individually discusses the yearly patterns governed by Yangming, Shaoyang, Taiyin, Shaoyin, and Jueyin — examining the changes of the Five Movements, the phenology and pathology during each of the six intervals, and corresponding health regimes.)
Overall summary of years governed by the Six Qi:
The Yellow Emperor asked: What you, Sir, have set forth is fairly detailed, but how can these correspondences be verified?
Qi Bo said: Most profound question! The six Qi' movements set sequence and still in dwelling positions. Usually, observe at dawn on the first day of the first month; observing by that position reveals that year's qi movement. When qi encounters excess, the arrival is early. In deficiency, the greeting is late. This is the course of Heaven (Dao) and cycle of any transformations. Where there is neither excess nor insufficiency is called "upright year"; correspondence occurs at right time on schedule.
The Yellow Emperor asked: Those Victory & Revenge— those are regularly carried-out phenomenon. When would threats sneak one about future in particular years→ which timing weather route in forecast? How can manage? Qi Bo answered: That circumstance deviation counts disastrous unsynchronistic energies.
The Yellow Emperor said: concerning unfolding-start-ai endings-metrics about universal frame(s)? in what arrangement were that sequence completed-in-succession? Dietary rhythm of "eating seasonal grains to preserve true qi" 🍚: This chapter proposes eating grains of the current season to "preserve true qi," whose spirit is that diet should follow nature's production rhythm—eat whatever grows in each season. Modern nutrition science likewise advocates "seasonal eating," holding that in-season foods exhibit synergy between nutritional value and human body needs.
Preventive awareness of "avoiding deficient pathogens to secure correct qi" 🛡️: The Five Movements and Six Qi theory is essentially an "environmental risk early-warning system." Modern people need not calculate using the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, but paying attention to weather forecasts and seasonal disease early warnings, adjusting schedules and strengthening protection around extreme weather events—this is the modern extension of this philosophy.
