六壬大全
The spirits of the twelve Earthly Branches each have their Yin-Yang attributes and their specific functions. In terms of the twelve palaces, the order of the Five Elements, the directional arrangement of the Five Regions, the cyclical progression of the Four Seasons, the celestial degrees of the Three Enclosures and Twenty-eight Mansions, the movements of the Seven Governors and Four Luminaries, the earthly divisions of the Nine Provinces and Ten Thousand States, and the functional relationships of Yin-Yang generation and control — all are contained within this system, interwoven like a tapestry. This forms the general framework of the Heavenly Spirits. In terms of the rotation of the Dipper Handle in the heavens, the Celestial Gang (Chen) takes the lead, arranged in forward order; in terms of the Sun's ecliptic progression through the palaces, Dengming (Hai) takes the lead, arranged in reverse order. Those arranged in reverse order are called the Monthly Generals, which are in fact the twelve spirits. In Ren divination, they are all referred to as "spirits," not "generals." Examining their placement upon the Day Stem/Branch and Year/Life positions — whether they generate or control, punish or combine with each other — determines good or bad fortune. When the twelve spirits are added to each other: cases of upper controlling lower, and of upper and lower generating or matching each other, are all assessed by the Heaven Plate; cases of lower controlling upper are assessed by the Earth Plate.
This general treatise reveals the fundamental principle of the Six Ren divination plate: the relative movement of the Heaven Plate and Earth Plate constitutes the foundation of all judgment. The twelve spirits and generals have fixed positions on the Earth Plate (arranged in reverse order by Monthly General), while on the Heaven Plate they rotate according to time. The key lies in the positioning relationship — when a Heaven Plate spirit is placed over an Earth Plate position, generation, control, punishment, and combination arise, from which good or bad fortune is inferred. The principle that "upper controls lower, upper-lower generation/match is assessed by the Heaven Plate; lower controls upper is assessed by the Earth Plate" establishes the primary-secondary relationship in judgment.
The Six Ren Heaven-Earth Plate model is essentially a dynamic space-time coordinate system. The Earth Plate represents fixed spatial directions and temporal rhythms, while the Heaven Plate represents the current distribution of cosmic energy. This bears remarkable resemblance to the concept of a "reference frame" in modern science. The twelve spirits and generals are not merely symbols but form a classification system that incorporates astronomy, geography, human affairs, and physical phenomena into a single framework for analysis — reflecting ancient systematic thinking.
In practical divination, understanding the principle of "upper controls lower — assess by Heaven Plate; lower controls upper — assess by Earth Plate" is like mastering a decision-priority rule: when circumstances actively exert pressure, look to the Heaven Plate; when passively enduring, look to the Earth Plate. This translates into modern management as the distinction between "proactive initiative" and "passive response" strategies.
"Regarding the rotation of the Dipper Handle, Celestial Gang leads in forward order; regarding the Sun's progression through palaces, Dengming leads in reverse order." — Within the same system, two sets of order coexist, one forward and one reverse. The forward arrangement represents the energy transmission of the Big Dipper's celestial stem; the reverse arrangement represents the temporal progression of the Sun's Monthly Generals. This suggests the multiple rhythms of cosmic operation: some forces unfold in natural sequence, while others require reverse tracing to be grasped. Between forward and reverse lie the deep manifestations of Yin-Yang waxing and waning.
Zi-Wu (Rat-Horse) are the two solstices of Yin and Yang, Mao-You (Rabbit-Rooster) are the gateways of the Sun and Moon's rising and setting. Yin-Shen (Tiger-Monkey) are the spirits of roads and travel; Chen-Xu (Dragon-Dog) are places of imprisonment. Chou-Wei (Ox-Goat) are the celestial kitchens; Si-Hai (Snake-Pig) are the halls and temples. 🌏
This twelve-character summary is extremely concise, illuminating the core symbolic functions of each Earthly Branch:
These twelve directional symbols can be mapped to twelve scenarios of modern life: Zi-Wu represents career peaks and troughs; Mao-You are the gateways between workplace and home; Yin-Shen involves travel and relocation; Chen-Xu concerns legal disputes and restrictions; Chou-Wei relates to food and financial resources; Si-Hai involves spiritual beliefs and cultural spaces. The ancients' symbolic system still provides a reference framework for today's spatial and temporal analysis.
In Feng Shui for dwellings, these twelve directions remain widely used. For instance: Yin-Shen direction is suitable for main entrances and passages; Chen-Xu direction is not recommended for bedrooms (may cause feelings of oppression); Chou-Wei direction suits kitchens and dining areas; Si-Hai direction can accommodate studies or meditation rooms. This provides traditional basis for modern home layout.
Dengming Hai, belongs to the Water Spirit, after the Rain Water solar term the Sun enters the Juzi celestial division, being the First Month General.
Why is it called "Dengming"? In the first month, the Three Yang energies begin to manifest on the earth's surface; the I Ching says: "The dragon appears in the field, and the world becomes civilized." The I Ching·Mingyi states: "First ascending to heaven, illuminating all nations." Also, because Hai is the Gate of Heaven, it is called Dengming (Ascending Brightness).
Dengming's appearance: long face, yellow hair, hands and feet dark with blemishes. It is Yin Water, also known as the "Heavenly Anomaly," representing the ancient master craftsman of palace construction. Ren (Water) lodges upon it, Wood is born beneath it, being the image of Xuanwu. Its tone is Jue, its number is four, its taste is salty, its constellations are Shi and Bi, its animals are pig, yu, and bear, its zodiac sign is Pisces, its terrestrial division is Wei and Bingzhou, its creature is the pig, and its position is the Gate of Heaven. 🚪
Matters governed: auspicious omens, summons, and private matters. It is self-punishing, dwelling at the extreme Yin position. Also governs disputes, imprisonment, drowning (when mounted by an inauspicious general), claims and losses (on Si-You-Chou days), and uncleanness.
Categorical Images: It is the Rain Master of Heaven; also ghosts and spirits, Heavenly Horse, Heavenly Ear. It represents young sons, generals, ladies, honored guests, drunkards, and beggars. It governs the liver, kidneys, hair, and head (when Jia is present on the day stem). It represents foot ailments (Yang day on Shen, Yin day on Wei). For diseases: spleen disorders, weeping (near Chen), strabismus (blue Chou), damaged head/face (Hai on Si, Si on Hai), diarrhea (on Year/Life). For theft (as Xuanwu), killing robbers, lewd spirits (as Hou-Xuan). For structures: Precious Hall (as Guiren), towers and pavilions (on Yin; with Yin and Dragon it is a tower, with Combine it is a pavilion), terraces (on Mao; also with Mao it is a lamppost), courts and courtyards, pits and gardens, wall foundations, prisons, latrines (on Xu; also on Jia-Yi days with Sky Void on Si). For objects: paintings, turbans, tents and canopies, writing brushes and ink, umbrellas and canopies, keys (on Si), hats and satchels, rings. For plants: plum blossoms, gourds. For provisions: granaries, vinegar and sauces (on You), rice, wheat, salt (with Scarlet Bird). 🌾
Surnames: Yang, Zhu, Lu, Wei, Gan, Fang, Ji (with Yin-Mao present), Ren (with Chou-Wei present), Deng, Fan (all with Six Combine), Feng (with Snake riding Si-Wu over Hai). Any water-radical or compound characters.
Dengming as the Heavenly Pillar (Hai as Heaven's Pillar):
The core essence of Dengming Hai lies in its position as the Gate of Heaven — being both the extreme of Yin and the place where Yang energy first ascends. This special status of "Yang arising at extreme Yin" endows Hai Water with a dual nature: on one hand, it governs dark, private matters, drowning, theft, and other shadowy affairs; on the other hand, it governs summons, auspicious omens, and the illuminating image of Heaven's Gate opening. The key lies in the mounted Heavenly General: with auspicious generals, it manifests its luminous aspect; with inauspicious ones, its shadowy side emerges.
The "Gate of Heaven" symbolism of Hai Water can be understood in modern terms as the information portal — the internet, communications, and media. Dengming's governed "summons" resembles today's notifications, interviews, and invitations; "private matters" correspond to privacy protection and anonymous communication; "keys" correspond to passwords, encryption, and access management. In the information age, the image of Hai Water is particularly active.
When Dengming initiates in a Ren chart:
Dengming being "self-punishing" — Hai punishing Hai — suggests the tendency toward self-consumption at the extreme Yin position. This is like a person at their darkest moment, where the greatest enemy is often oneself. But the I Ching says "first ascending to heaven," for at the extreme of darkness lies the starting point of light. Maintaining faith in light during the darkest hour is the deep lesson Dengming imparts.
Hekui Xu, belongs to the Earth Spirit, after the Spring Equinox the Sun enters the Jianglou celestial division, being the Second Month General. Hekui is the Tiankui (Heavenly Chief), the first star of the Dipper's魁, reaching the Xu position, hence the name. In the month of Mao (second lunar month), all things grow from their roots, gathering by kind; "Kui" means gathering.
Hekui spirit is the ancient prison warden. Xin lodges upon it, Fire is buried beneath it, being the image of Tiankong. Its tone is Shang, its number is five, its taste is sweet, its constellations are Kui and Lou, its animals are wolf, dog, and jackal, its zodiac sign is Aries, its terrestrial division is Lu and Xuzhou, its creature is the dog, and its position is northwest. 🐕
Matters governed: deception, official seals, and servants/slaves fleeing. When initiating, it signifies old matters resurfacing. Also governs vain expenditure, loss of money and goods, and gathering multitudes.
Categorical Images: It is the Dipper's Chief of Heaven, also the Heavenly Net, Ketu, War Spirit, aversion spirit (as Xuanwu), Earth Gate. It represents: supervisory officials (on monthly stem), district commanders (on year stem), officials (as Scarlet Bird on day stem/branch), judicial officers, virtuous men, elders, monks and Taoists, hunters, children, servants, butchers, robbers (as White Tiger controlling Chen), soldiers (Xu on Shen, Shen on Xu), maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, sisters, beggars (as Xuan-Kong). For the body: life gate, bladder, feet, legs (on year/life — foot ailments). For places: city walls, temples, ridges and peaks, prisons (more accurate with Gouchen), kilns and smelting (as Snake on Si-Wu), empty halls, servant quarters, earthen objects, graves (as White Tiger initiating), walls (on Jia-day plus Yin). For objects: court robes (as Scarlet Bird), official seals, shoes, military weapons, cangues and shackles (as Xuanwu near punishment), swords and staffs, city bells, iron hoes, spades and spears, locks and keys, pestles and mills, pottery, stones (as Gouchen on Shen-You), prayer beads. For grains: five grains, field silk. 🌾
Surnames: Wei, Wang, Lu, Xu, Lou, Ni — any with earthen radical or foot elements.
Hekui with various generals:
The essence of Hekui Xu is the dual symbolism of gathering and restriction. "Kui" means gathering — all things congregate by kind; yet Xu is also the Heavenly Net and prison, governing confinement and binding. This unity of gathering and restriction makes Xu the representative of rules, institutions, and hierarchy. It is both the seal (symbol of authority) and the prison (instrument of punishment) — two sides of the same coin.
The "gathering" function of Xu Earth corresponds in modern society to organizational structures and institutional management: corporate bylaws, legal provisions, administrative systems. The "prison" imagery expands to various constraint mechanisms: contractual obligations, legal sanctions, industry regulations. When Xu initiates, governing "old matters resurfacing," this can be understood as the re-emergence of historical legacy issues — old contract disputes, past debts, inherited matters from predecessors.
When Hekui initiates:
Hekui is the first star of the Dipper's true魁 — the most important position among the seven stars of the Big Dipper. The Dipper's chief guides direction, but also implies rules that cannot be escaped. Gathering implies order, but excessive order becomes imprisonment. How to find balance between gathering and scattering, between order and freedom, is the eternal lesson Hekui leaves us.
Congkui You, belongs to the Metal Spirit, after Grain Rain the Sun enters the Daliang division, being the Third Month General. Congkui is the second star of the Dipper's魁, reaching the You position, hence the name. Also, in the third month, vegetation branches and leaves emerge from the roots; the character "Cong" (to follow) signifies this following out.
Congkui spirit has proper features, yellowish-white complexion, being the ancient witch. Its的正禄 is without lodging place; it is the image of Taiyin. Its tone is Yu, its number is six, its taste is pungent, its constellations are Wei, Mao, Bi; its animals are pheasant, chicken, bird; its zodiac sign is Taurus; its terrestrial division is Zhao, Jizhou; its creature is the rooster; its position is due west. 🐓
Matters governed: private matters, dissolution, and rewards. Also governs metal blades, servants, information.
Categorical Images: It is the Astronomical Star, also drizzling rain (on Zi), frost (on Xu), snow (with Chou-Wu), seas (on Si), rivers (on Zi). It is the private gate; it represents: censors, close kin, hidden nobles, women (prosperous at旺 — young women), aunts and female cousins (Sky Void in decline), concubines, maidservants (as Liuhe or Dragon; if Taiyin over day/time, the concubine becomes the wife), artisan servants, tavern keepers, young servants (as Sky Void), nuns (with Combine on Yin-Shen), courtesans (with Taichang, Mao, Wei), aged maidservants (on Zi-Chou). For governance: official emoluments, border troops (as Tiger on the first month), mourning clothes (as Tiger; on Jia-Xu days mourning arrives), discord between husband and wife. For the body: skin and hair, orifices, ears and eyes, claws and bones, semen and blood, small intestine, lips and tongue. For diseases: consumption, eye ailments (as Snake-Bird), red eyes (Bing-Ding added), knife wounds (on seasonal punishment of life). For structures: white pagodas, streets and lanes, small paths, ancestral temples, granaries. For objects: steles, gold and silver, jewelry, pearls, bronze mirrors, copper and lead (as Taichang on Yin), iron and stone (as Gouchen on Shen-You), leather, felt mats. For food and drink: wine, vegetables, ginger and garlic. 🥂
Surnames: Zhao, Jin, Le, Shi, Liu (Mao on You), Min (Mao-You with Liuhe), Zheng (with Nobleman), Cheng, Lü (both with Taiyang). Any with standing-person radical or metal radical.
Congkui with various generals:
The essence of Congkui You lies in the combination of Metal's killing severity and the obscurity of the private gate. You being due west, the gateway of sunset, makes it the private gate; Metal governs execution, thus blades and dissolution. The essence of You Metal is contraction and separation — ripened fruit separates from its branch, cut metal separates from its matrix. This "separation" nature makes it govern dissolution, information (transmission is a form of separation), and servants (separated from the master's household).
The "private gate" of You Metal corresponds in modern society to private spaces and informal channels: behind-door negotiations, back-room deals, backdoor relationships. Its "dissolution" function corresponds to contract termination, partnership dissolution, divestiture. What You governs as "information" is especially prominent in today's communications age — phone calls, text messages, social media updates — all manifestations of You Metal's "separate and transmit" nature.
When Congkui initiates:
Although Congkui is an auspicious general (Taiyin), its "private gate" attribute reminds us: the line between openness and concealment is razor-thin. You is at due west, where the sun sets and light gives way to darkness. How to maintain clarity in this "twilight zone" is Congkui's warning.
Chuansong Shen, belongs to the Metal Spirit, after Grain Full the Sun enters the Shishen division, being the Fourth Month General. In the fourth month, all things flourish greatly; Yang reaches its extreme and is about to recede, while one line of Yin is about to arise — transmitting Yin and sending off Yang, hence "Chuansong" (Transmission).
Chuansong spirit has a short neck, round glaring eyes, slight beard and hair, large body. It is the ancient traveler (messenger). Geng lodges upon it, Water is born beneath it, being the image of Baihu. Its tone is Zhi, its number is seven, its taste is pungent, its constellations are Zi and Shen, its animals are monkey, ape, nao, its zodiac sign is Gemini, its terrestrial division is Jin and Yizhou, its creature is the monkey, and its position is southwest. 🐒
Matters governed: roads/pathways, diseases, and news/information.
Categorical Images: It is the Heavenly Money star, also the Heavenly Ghost, Heavenly Physician. It represents: chief justice, field marshal (at the head of a trine), travelers, public officials, common people, filial sons, Expeditionary soldiers (on Zi-Wu; also governs military desertion), postal soldiers, hunters (as Tiger), silversmiths, blacksmiths, maternal uncles, monks (as Dragon on the first month), merchants, shamans and physicians (as Liuhe), butchers. For the body: lungs, gallbladder, large intestine, bones, voice/sound. For conditions: disease, corpses, mourning and filial rites. For events: childbirth, water calamity (Hai controlling day), enmity and vengeance (as Gouchen), gift-giving, loss and theft (as Xuanwu on Hai-Zi), lewdness (on Ren-Gui days). For places: ancestral temples, nunneries, city houses, roads, ponds and lakes, imperial tombs, bier. For objects: silk, cotton floss, scriptures, feathers, medicines, weapons (near punishment), mortars and mills, barley. 🌾
Surnames: Yuan, Guo, Shen, Jin, Hou, Han, Deng — any with metal radical or the like.
Chuansong with various generals:
The essence of Chuansong Shen lies in transmission and transformation. In the fourth month, Yang reaches its extreme and Yin is born — precisely the critical junction of energy transfer, hence Shen is called "transmission." Shen's road attribute is most prominent — everything in transit, whether people, goods, or information, falls under Shen's domain. At the same time, Shen is the home palace of Baihu, carrying Metal's killing breath, thus governing disease, mourning, and warfare.
Chuansong Shen corresponds in modern society to the three great systems of logistics, transportation, and communication: courier services, railways and aviation, telecommunications networks. "Roads" encompass not only physical roads but also information channels and logistics networks. Shen governs "news and consumption" — the transmission and loss of information, especially critical in the information age: signal strength, data transfer, message delivery rates — all can be analyzed through this lens.
When Chuansong initiates:
"Transmitting Yin, sending off Yang" — the essence of transmission is transformation of energy forms. When Yang reaches its extreme, Yin is already on the way; when Yin reaches its extreme, Yang is already approaching. This reminds us: the apex of any thing marks the beginning of its turning point. Preparing for the worst at the best of times, and seeing the best possibility at the worst of times — this is the wisdom of Chuansong Shen.
Xiaoji Wei, belongs to the Earth Spirit, after the Summer Solstice the Sun enters the Chunshou division, being the Fifth Month General. The energy of the summer solstice — the great departs and the small arrives; the way of the petty man grows, hence "Xiaoji" (Small Auspiciousness). Also it signifies the initial completion of all things.
Xiaoji spirit is the Wind Uncle, the ancient pharmacist. Ding lodges upon it, Wood is buried beneath it, being the image of Taichang. Its tone is Zhi, its number is eight, its taste is sweet, its constellations are Jing and Gui, its animals are han, sheep, eagle, its zodiac sign is Cancer, its terrestrial division is Qin and Yongzhou, its creature is the goat, and its position is southwest. 🐐
Matters governed: wine and feasts, marriage, sacrifice and worship.
Categorical Images: It is the Heavenly Wine star, also the Heavenly Ear (on Si-Wu), Wind Uncle, ghost-spirit. It represents: Taichang, guarantor, parents, elderly, stepfather (added), stepmother (Hai on You), aunt, sister-in-law, younger sister, matchmaker, nurse, widow, Taoist, winemaker, hatter. For events: summons (Dragon matching the day), congratulations, banquets, separation (seeing the parting spirit on the year of travel). For conditions: drought and heat, locusts (Bird on Hai-Zi). For the body: liver, humpback. For places: courts, walls and fences, gardens (on Chen), groves (on Mao), earthen objects, wells and springs, pottery and smelting, graves (on Jia-Yi days for corner surnames). For venues: tea houses, wine shops, racetracks. For objects: seafood, plates and cups, hats and robes, seals, music and song, medicine, bamboo curtains, mulberry wood, jars (Dragon-Hou on Yin-Mao), hemp. 🍶
Surnames: Zhu, Qin, Gao, Zhang, Yang, Du, Jing, Wei, Yang — any with goat or earth radical.
Xiaoji with various generals:
The essence of Xiaoji Wei is nourishment and reception. Wei is the tomb of Wood — where Wood returns; Earth is heavy and can store all things. Taichang being the grain spirit, Wei governs wine, feasts, and conviviality. At the same time, Wei is the Wind Uncle and pharmacist, possessing mobility and healing power. This combination of "heaviness concealing mobility" makes Wei representative of both social communion and healing.
The "wine and banquet" attributes of Xiaoji Wei correspond in modern times to social dining, business banquets, and gatherings. "Sacrifice" corresponds to religious activities, cultural ceremonies, commemorative events. Wei's identity as "pharmacist" connects to modern healthcare, psychological counseling, wellness. When Wei initiates, it often points to matters of dining, socializing, and health.
When Xiaoji initiates:
"The great departs, the small arrives; the way of the petty man grows" — after the summer solstice, Yang gradually wanes and Yin waxes. Yet the name "Small Auspiciousness" contains a cautionary note; beneath the seemingly auspicious surface, dark forces are accumulating. But it is not entirely pessimistic, for "all things are initially completed" — though the fruit is not yet fully ripe, its form can already be seen. Achieving something even during Yin's ascent is the wisdom of Xiaoji.
Shengguang Wu, belongs to the Fire Spirit, after Great Heat the Sun enters the Chunhuo division, being the Sixth Month General. Wu is Yang Fire, exactly at the Li position. Its light illuminates the four quarters; as the saying goes: "When the great brightness is in the sky, even a torch does not shine" — hard to rival such radiance; hence "Shengguang" (Overcoming Light).
Shengguang has round eyes, red face, large body. It is the ancient horse groom (imperial stableman). It has no formal lodging for its genuine emolument; it is the image of Zhuque. Its tone is Gong, its number is nine, its taste is bitter, its constellations are Liu, Xing, Zhang, its animals are zhang (a type of deer), horse, deer, its zodiac sign is Leo, its terrestrial division is Zhou, two rivers, its creature is the horse, and its position is due south. 🐎
Matters governed: anomalies of light, silk floss; also documents/writings, official matters.
Categorical Images: It is the Heavenly Wangliang star, also the Left Heavenly Eye, rosy clouds and thunder. It is top-small-bottom-large. It represents: palace ladies, imperial groves, envoys, prostitutes, pavilion chiefs, messengers, virtuous men, monks and shamans, riders, silkworm maids. For emotional states: fright and suspicion (near Shen), sincerity/faith (Bird on Yin), writings, Mouth and tongue (near Shen and Bird), pregnancy (on Hai — receiving extinction). For events: soldiers (Gouchen on Shen-You), litigation, news/information, luster. For the body: heart (near Hai — heart pain), eyes, mouth. For diseases: bloodshed, heart deficiency, small-intestine disorders (Bird on Zi), vomiting and diarrhea. For places: palaces, city gates, halls, fields and houses, roads, kitchens (Taichang on Shen-You), kilns and smelting. For objects: torches and candles, flags, embroidery, clothing, paintings and calligraphy, clothing racks, cabinets, steaming baskets. For creatures and produce: horses, silkworm silk, crow's nests, pheasants, small beans (Taichang on Mao). 🔥
Surnames: Xiao, Zhang, Li, Xu, Zhou, Ma, Zhu, Liu (with Liuhe), Di (Gouchen on Hai), Feng (Snake riding Wu on Zi).
Shengguang with various generals:
The essence of Shengguang Wu is the unity of light/brilliance and documentation. Wu resides at due south, the Li position — the extreme of Fire, shining upon four regions. Zhuque governs documents and information, hence Wu is also the spirit of official documents, examinations, and litigation. Fire governs propriety; Wu's "sincerity" attribute arises from this — those who are open and upright must be trustworthy. Yet excessive Fire becomes disaster, thus Wu also governs bloodshed, fire, and oral disputes.
The "document" attributes of Shengguang Wu correspond in modern times to official papers, certificates, academic credentials, legal filings, media reports. The "brilliance" attribute corresponds to public image, name recognition, brand exposure. What Wu governs as "information" is especially prominent in the information age — news dissemination, online public opinion, social media trending. When Wu initiates, one should consider matters of public affairs, document processing, information disclosure.
When Shengguang initiates:
"When the great brightness is in the sky, even a torch survives" — true overwhelming light does not extinguish even a small flame; rather, it makes everything around brighter. This suggests the nature of true leadership: when one's brilliance is great enough, it does not suppress others' light but illuminates all that surrounds it. The "overcoming" in Shengguang is not about vanquishing others' light but about transcending one's own limitations to achieve universally illuminating radiance.
Taiyi Si, belongs to the Fire Spirit, after the End of Heat the Sun enters the Chunwei division, being the Seventh Month General. Taiyi is where the Taiwei Enclosure resides, the abode of the Grand Monad. Also, in the seventh month the hundred grains become fully formed, having the power to sustain themselves.
Taiyi spirit has a high forehead, broad red mouth, yellow hair, with squinting eyes. It is the ancient forger (blacksmith). Bing and Wu lodge upon it, Metal is born beneath it, being the image of Tengshe. Its tone is Jue, its number is four, its taste is bitter, its constellations are Yi and Zhen, its animals are snake, earthworm, cicada, its zodiac sign is Virgo, its terrestrial division is Chu and Jingzhou, its creature is the snake, and its position is south. 🔥
Matters governed: conflict, verbal disputes, anxiety, strange events. Also sudden calamity, rewards. General discussion: Si encountering Chen is entering — auspicious; Chen dwelling at Si is retreating — inauspicious.
Categorical Images: It is the Great Monad Star of Heaven, also snow (after the winter solstice Si governs snowfall). It represents: chariot riders, aunts and maidens, women, craftsmen, calligraphers, carpenters, cooks, shopkeepers, beggars, mourning guests (as Tiger controlling external mourning), singing boys (Taiyin governs prostitutes). For conditions: pregnancy (as Snake on Chen — twin births), anxiety, literature, requisitions, flippancy, verbal abuse (controlling day/branch), exile and punishment (Si-You matched). For the body: pericardium, triple burner, throat, face, teeth, freckles. For things: vehicles, metal and iron, pearls and jade, boxes, silk goods, musical instruments, locks and keys, porcelain, bricks and tiles, bows and crossbows, flowers and fruits, cauldrons (also metal vibrating), furnace smelting (with Fire), kilns (with Earth; Si-Wei combined governs wells and stoves connected; Si-Hai day with Xu over Si governs stove-side structures), firelight. For creatures: flying insects, birds, geckos, eels, snakes (with monthly aversion — dreams of snakes). 🐍
Surnames: Chen, Shi, Zhao, Tian, Zhang, Jing, Yu, Zhu, Hao (with Liuhe), Chu, Qi (with Yin), Geng (with Zi), Gong (with Chen), Ji (with Chou).
Taiyi with various generals:
The core of Taiyi Si lies in change and disturbance. Si is the snake — good at transformation; Taiyi is the throne of the Heavenly Emperor — sublime and sacred. This union of the sacred with the cunning makes Si one of the most complex of the spirits: on one hand governing rewards, literature, and craftsmanship (Fire's civilizing aspect); on the other, governing disputes, anomalies, and disturbances (the serpent's venomous aspect). Si conceals the three stems Bing-Wu-Geng — Fire, Earth, and Metal energies all present — protean and manifold.
The serpent aspect of Taiyi Si corresponds in modern times to flexible adaptability, inscrutable unpredictability in people and affairs: skilled negotiators, volatile market conditions, crisis management requiring high responsiveness. The "stove/furnace" imagery corresponds to energy systems: electricity, gas, thermal supply. Si's identity as "the forger" connects to modern metalworking and precision manufacturing industries.
When Taiyi initiates:
Taiyi being the Emperor's abode yet taking the serpent as its symbol — at the most sacred place dwells the most changeable creature. This reminds us: stability and change always coexist. Seemingly solid structures may hide variable elements; seemingly chaotic situations may contain unchanging patterns. Learning to find the constants in change is the wisdom of Taiyi.
Tiangang Chen, belongs to the Earth Spirit, after the Autumn Equinox the Sun enters the Shouxing division, being the Eighth Month General. Tiangang is where the Dipper Handle points. Also in the eighth month branches become hard and strong.
Tiangang is yellow in color, with rounded full face and much facial hair. It is the ancient prison master. Yi lodges upon it, Water and Earth are buried beneath it, being the image of Gouchen. Its tone is Shang, its number is five, its taste is sweet, its constellations are Jiao, Kang, its animals are jiao, fish, dragon, its zodiac sign is Libra, its terrestrial division is Zheng and Xiangzhou, its creature is the dragon, and its position is southeast, nearer the east. 🐲
Matters governed: public quarrels/litigation, death and mourning, old land/house affairs. Also said: Chen is the Heavenly Prison, Xu is the Earthly Dungeon — specifically governing imprisonment and official tribunals.
Categorical Images: It is the Heavenly Weeping star, also the prison spirit, Right Heavenly Eye, Heavenly Net. It represents: slaughter Superintendent, supervisor-officials (on month branch), high general, nephew-soldiers, the defeated fishermen, the purveyor of slaughter (White Tiger at dead place with Metal present). For conditions: edicts and imperial warrants, official affairs (Bird-Gou controls the day; serves on Ren-Gui days), the obdurate and wicked, hard and inelastic things, fierce anomalies, bullying, contention, lethal battles (initiating — controlling the day), agitation (Tiger), grief (Tiger), worry (initiating-middle-ending and added to Earth), pregnancy (Tianhou), evil dreams (Snake initiating a dream on the year of travel), suicide (Snake-Tiger controlling the day). For the body: intestines, chest; also corpses. Also synaesthesia — the blind seeing. For places: corridors and roofing; The character includes: temple complex, Buddhist temple retreat, sewer-ditch, stone fence, grave-mound, orchard, wheat field, sea (Tianhou over Hai), well (Xuanwu over Si), open mountainside (Sky Void). For objects: armor and helmet, netting for snares (with Fire), spilling-steeping vessels, fetters and neck-gallows, millstone, pestle, earthen jar, jar-crock, money and valuables, bronze helmets, basins, coarse furs, tattered garments, tree-sap-or-lacquer (construction). For foods: five grains; rice and wheat-scale, meat strong-scented foods, scaled creatures (with Water), hydrobios-food (with Hai). 🐟
Surnames: Ma, Guo, Qiao, Zheng, Qiu, Yue, Long, Chen, Tian, Pang (added to Gou), Zhou (with You).
Tiangang with various generals:
The essence of Tiangang Chen lies in hardness and litigation. Chen is what the Dipper Handle denotes — judgment rendering. Being the prison-obscurity of Heaven and also the Sky-Suspension God, it governs jails and the law courts — prisons, administration of justice; thus legal tribunal-organization, disciplinary-regulation, standard-setting procedure in human administration. Since Chen is additionally the tombwater-moat and sepulture-of-Earth, having image of collecting, harvesting completeness-of-circle, therefore litigants perforce must come collectively about one old case-housecraft action.
The modern correlated in Tiangang Chen's "litigation-related" trait. Law at current implementation stages is as if mirror-born here: jurisdictional-organizational; public prosecutors, and customary international courts..jail, tribunal &b restraining enclosures & standard enforcement-compliance segment identification — prohibition orders; prosecution suits likely to manifest the regulatory end of the function. Tiangang historical association with relitigants institutional; old-plot foundation in realty arbitration-family development litigations thus central themes..
With practical field matters "modern correlates:

When metal turns fine; use firm discipline to suspend progression-of-choice: command-Gat; hard-Gate itself what ends-up not hampering.- These exact paradigms: when-an environment-oriented-double-measure "system-choice-mind" well executes the disciplinary direction: If law used the subtle point outside the role-of-net given-lever — same force can suffocate-as liberate .
