Chapter 87: On Pregnancy
Holistic Interpretation
Divination regarding the authenticity of pregnancy, safety during gestation, the auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of the mother, and the gender of the fetus should be conducted separately. When divining for oneself or on behalf of others, the offspring line (子孙爻) is the core symbolic element; however, if children are inquiring about their mother’s pregnancy, the sibling line (兄弟爻) is used instead.
If the offspring line is strong and supported (e.g., aligned with the sun and moon or assisted by moving lines), it indicates an auspicious pregnancy 🌱; if the offspring line is weak, broken, or afflicted by clashes, restrictions, or harm—or even transforms into a ghost line (化鬼), exhaustion (化绝), or breakage (化破)—it may suggest a false pregnancy or miscarriage, as虚幻 as a bubble or a flickering lamp 💨. However, an exception is made if the moving line encounters emptiness (逢空), in which case pregnancy may still occur.
If the offspring line transforms into another offspring line, or if multiple offspring lines appear in the hexagram and are active, or if an existing strong offspring line transforms into another strong offspring line, it suggests the possibility of twins 👥. The Divination Yuan Gui states: "Two strong offspring lines indicate twins." Juezi补充: If both are active and strong, it confirms twins; if one is weak and one strong, it may indicate one stillborn and one live birth, or one male and one female; if the offspring lines in the hexagram are静止 and inactive, it is not twins.
Fetal gender can be determined through the changes of yin and yang: When all six lines are静止, first observe the hexagram wrapping—yin wrapping yang (e.g., Kan hexagram, Da Guo, Xiao Guo, Xian, Heng hexagram) indicates a female, while yang wrapping yin (e.g., Li hexagram, Zhong Fu, Yi, Sun hexagram) indicates a male. If there is no hexagram wrapping, observe the yin or yang nature of the offspring line (yang for male, yin for female). When there are moving lines in the hexagram, prioritize them: one moving line—yang moving indicates female, yin moving indicates male; two moving lines—observe the upper line; three moving lines—observe the middle line; multiple moving lines indicate insincerity, and divination should be repeated another day, as consecutive divinations are invalid ❌.
For example, during Chen month, Wu Chen day, inquiring about fetal gender, obtaining Xiao Guo changing to Yu hexagram:
- Sibling line (申金) moving, transforming into wealth line (卯木)
Interpretation: This hexagram addresses both pregnancy safety and gender, fortunately allowing simultaneous interpretation. The moving sibling line does not harm the wealth line, indicating the mother’s safety; yang moving transforming into yin indicates a female birth. The querent doubted the hexagram wrapping (yin wrapping yang should indicate male), but the divine sign manifested through the moving line. Indeed, on Ren Shen day, a daughter was born, and the mother was safe.
【New Commentary】: This method contains contradictions and requires further study.
Juezi emphasized: Divination for pregnancy safety and gender should be conducted separately. During leisure, both can be interpreted together, but during critical labor, only safety should be interpreted, not gender. For example, during Chen month, Wu Zi day, a woman divined about her pregnancy, obtaining Gen changing to Bo hexagram:
- Offspring line (申金) moving alone, transforming into ghost line (卯木)
This woman experienced difficult labor for a day and night. It was interpreted that delivery would occur at Shen time the next day, as the moving offspring line克制 the ghost line, resolving the crisis. Why not Shen time today? Because Zi day clashes with Wu fire, which harms metal, making today impossible. Gender? At this life-threatening moment, the divine only reveals safety, not gender. Indeed, a son was born at Shen time the next day.
【New Commentary】: Hexagrams require flexible interpretation. Here, the moving offspring line does not signify the fetus but rather a signal of joy in overcoming danger. Mechanically interpreting "offspring transforming into ghost means certain death" would be erroneous.
🧠 In-Depth Understanding
Core Concepts 💡
Ancient practices used the offspring line, moving lines, and hexagram wrapping structures in I Ching hexagrams to comprehensively assess the authenticity, safety, and gender of pregnancies. The emphasis on separate divinations and the priority of moving lines reflect the I Ching philosophy that "divine signs manifest through movement."
Modern Interpretation 🌟
- Scientific Rational Perspective: Divination can be seen as a tool for psychological疏导 and decision-making reference rather than absolute prophecy. Modern medicine can accurately determine fetal status through technologies like ultrasound; divination results should be viewed rationally to avoid superstition.
- Contemporary Application: In times of anxiety or high uncertainty (e.g., during pregnancy), divination can provide psychological comfort but should be combined with medical check-ups. Moving line changes reflect dynamic situations, similar to modern risk assessment.
- Limitations in Gender Prediction: Methods like hexagram wrapping and yin-yang moving lines lack scientific basis. Modern society advocates gender equality, emphasizing focus on maternal and infant health rather than gender prediction.
Practical Value ⚡
- Emotional Management: Divination helps alleviate pregnancy-related anxiety but should be secondary to medical care.
- Decision Support: Auspicious transformations can serve as positive signals, encouraging calm应对; inauspicious transformations提示 enhanced prevention (e.g., regular prenatal check-ups).
- Cultural Interest: As an experience of traditional culture, it enhances understanding of I Ching logic but should not replace professional medical advice.
Philosophical Reflection 🤔
I Ching divination reflects the ancient philosophy of "cosmic resonance," using line changes to simulate life’s dynamics. Modern interpretation: Change is constant; divination teaches adaptation to uncertainty rather than pursuit of absolute control. The core lies in "living in the present," valuing process over outcome.
