Chapter 2 of 10
易隐
The Qian trigram resembles three continuous horizontal lines; the Kun trigram resembles six broken short lines. The Zhen trigram is like a basin facing upward; the Gen trigram is like an overturned bowl. The Li trigram is hollow in the middle; the Kan trigram is full in the center. The Dui trigram has an opening at the top; the Xun trigram is broken at the bottom. 🔥🌊⛰
Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood, Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal. Metal restrains Wood, Wood restrains Earth, Earth restrains Water, Water restrains Fire, Fire restrains Metal. This is the foundational energy-operation basis of the entire divination system.
Jia and Yi belong to Wood of the East; Bing and Ding belong to Fire of the South; Wu and Ji belong to Earth of the Center; Geng and Xin belong to Metal of the West; Ren and Gui belong to Water of the North.
Zi is Water Rat, Chou is Earth Ox, Yin is Wood Tiger, Mao is Wood Rabbit, Chen is Earth Dragon, Si is Fire Snake, Wu is Fire Horse, Wei is Earth Goat, Shen is Metal Monkey, You is Metal Rooster, Xu is Earth Dog, Hai is Water Pig.
Azure Dragon belongs to Wood, White Tiger belongs to Metal, Dark Warrior (Xuanwu) belongs to Water, Hooked Chen belongs to Earth, Vermilion Bird belongs to Fire. Though the Flying Serpent (Tengshe) attaches to Earth, its original nature belongs to Fire—difficult to harm when encountering Water, and not restrained when meeting Wood.
Offspring generates Wealth, Wealth generates Officer/Spirit, Officer/Spirit generates Parents, Parents generates Siblings, Siblings generates Offspring. That which generates me is called the Origin Star (e.g., Offspring is the Origin Star of Wealth). Offspring restrains Officer/Spirit, Officer/Spirit restrains Siblings, Siblings restrains Wealth, Wealth restrains Parents, Parents restrains Offspring. That which restrains me is called the Fear Star (e.g., Offspring is the Fear Star of Officer/Spirit). When the Origin Star activates, it can generate and assist; when the Fear Star activates, it can restrain. When that which I generate activates, it is called "greed for generation," also known as "venting energy"—at such times, the power of both favorable and unfavorable factors diminishes.
Human character varies between the worthy and the unworthy; hexagram images also differ between excess and deficiency. Those in excess must be reduced to succeed; those deficient must be augmented to gain profit.
The effects of generation, support, mutual pairing, and harmony are like timely rain nourishing seedlings; the destructive forces of restraint, harm, punishment, and clash are like autumn frost withering plants. The states of Long Life and Imperial Prosperity surpass the splendor of the Gold-Grain Garden; the states of Death, Tomb, Extreme, and Void are the desolation of plowed wasteland.
The Day Minister is the sovereign of the six lines. If it can eliminate the Fear Star and support the Function Star, it is as crucial as destroying Xiang Yu to secure Liu Bang. The Month Establishment is the general outline of all hexagrams—one must not aid tyranny by generating the Fear Star. What should be most guarded against is the Year Star (Tai Sui) —it is favorable when still, unfavorable when active. Most crucial is the Body Position—it delights in receiving generation and support, not in suffering restraint and harm.
The World line represents oneself; the Response line represents others—the two most favor mutual resonance. Active lines signify beginnings; transformed lines signify endings—what is most feared is mutual conflict between them. If the Response position suffers harm, matters concerning others are unfavorable; if the World line is restrained, how could one's own plans prosper? When both World and Response are void, people lack certainty and substance; when inner and outer trigrams both activate vigorously, affairs are bound to be reversed and unstable.
When the World line activates through crossing or repetition, it is like two eyes watching the horse's head, the mind unsettled; when the Response line activates, the heart seems to cling to a swinging vine, thoughts chaotic and confused.
When the Function line has strength and no other disturbances, all endeavors succeed; when the Primary Image exists but is further wounded and restrained, no plan comes to fruition. What is wounded must be rescued; what is uninjured should not be made void. Void meeting clash becomes functional; completed combinations broken by conflict lose their power. Self-void and transformed-void must result in misfortune; punishment-combinations and restraint-combinations ultimately manifest deviance and excess.
An active line meeting combination is bound and held; a still line encountering clash is secretly stirred into action. A line entering the Tomb is difficult to restrain; a line with vitality is not truly void. With assistance and support, even weakness and decline bring good fortune; when greedily generating or combining, punishments, clashes, restraints, and harms may all be forgotten.
One must distinguish decline and vitality to understand the principles of restraint and combination; discern activity and stillness to determine the functions of punishment and clash. "Combine" is not necessarily combine; "clash" is not necessarily clash—due to extra characters, meanings change. "Punish" is not punish; "combine" is not combine—because of missing branches, interpretations alter.
When a line encounters the governing star of its season, other factors find it difficult to harm me; when a hidden spirit resides in a void position, affairs and heart remain intertwined. If the hidden spirit has no support or guidance, it ultimately follows you; if the flying spirit is not pushed aside, all is in vain. Hidden spirits beneath void positions are easily drawn forth; weak masters under restraint are difficult to maintain. When the Day Minister wounds a line, the line truly suffers disaster; when a line wounds the Day Minister, it only possesses empty reputation. A person in the Tomb does not emerge without clash; a spirit attached to the body does not depart without removal.
When the Virtue Star enters the hexagram, no plan goes unfulfilled; when the Fear Star attaches to the body, many obstacles arise and nothing succeeds. When the hexagram encounters an ominous star, avoiding it brings good fortune; when a line meets the Fear Star, breaking through it removes harm. When the Primary Image is weak and declining, punishment, clash, restraint, and harm are to be feared; when the Function line moves and transforms, death, tomb, extreme, and void are to be dreaded.
When the Function transforms into another Function, useful becomes useless; when void transforms into void, though void, it is not truly void. The Nurture phase governs hesitation; the Tomb phase governs obscurity. Transforming into Sickness brings damage; transforming into Fetus brings entanglements. When the ominous transforms into Long Life, its force surges without dissipating; when the auspicious connects with Bath, its ruin is already complete yet unfinished.
One must beware of returning restraint against oneself; one must not invert virtue to support others. When evil luminary is lonely and cold, fear the Day Minister arousing it; when Function lines multiply, delight in the Tomb's collecting restraint. When matters are obstructed, the middle line activates; when the heart withdraws in regret, the World line is void. The activation of hexagram lines must be examined through crossing and repetition; the harmony of active transformations must clarify advance and retreat.
When the Killer generates the Body, do not judge as auspicious; when the Function restrains the World, do not judge as ominous. For within generation hide the two-faced dangers of punishment and harm; within combination lurk the hidden perils of restraint and wounding. Punishment and harm should not approach the Function line; how can death and extreme hold the Body? When the active meets clash, affairs scatter; when the extreme meets generation, affairs succeed. If encountering combination and restraint, one must break through to achieve success; if encountering decline and idleness, one must await vitality to accomplish matters.
Speed manifests when activity restrains the World; delay manifests when stillness generates the Body. For illness, the Heaven's Joy star is greatly favorable—if it approaches an ominous killer, grief must follow. For travel, the Wang Wang star is most feared—if holding an auspicious spirit, profit ultimately arrives. Thus, although auspicious and ominous spirits are numerous and varied, ultimately none surpasses the fundamental principle of generation, restraint, control, and transformation.
Auspiciousness and misfortune arise from the permutations of the eight trigrams—one must examine the transformations of auspicious into ominous and ominous into auspicious. Flying and hidden spirits are established through the exchange of yin and yang—surely yin is hidden beneath yang and yang beneath yin. Every line has both hidden and flying aspects; every hexagram has both active and still lines; no active line fails to transform.
When transformations go to another palace, only Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth are taken. When returning to the original hexagram, they are matched as Siblings, Offspring, Wealth, Officer/Spirit, and Parents. When Water transforms into Metal, the Kan hexagram increases its power; when Fire transforms into Earth, the Li hexagram diminishes its might. Hai changing to Zi is the Advance Spirit—Water gains generation while Fire is restrained. Xu changing to Wei is the Retreat Degree—Metal is not assisted and Water suffers no harm.
A hexagram entering the Tomb is by no means favorable—one must further investigate the distinction between true and false. A line transforming with generation and support is most beneficial—one must more carefully examine the distinction between favor and aversion. Lines with Hidden Moan (Fu Yin) are inauspicious; hexagrams with Reverse Moan (Fan Yin) are most ominous. The transformation of Guimei into Sui is an example; Xiaoχoǔ into Gou follows the same principle. Recognizing only the six-line divination, how could one know the mutual clash of two hexagrams? Transformed lines can generate and restrain active lines, but active lines cannot control transformed images. Still lines suffer wounds from active lines; yet still lines find it difficult to control activity. The soft encountering the hard, how can the soft overcome the hard?
Sun and Moon expertly restrain hexagram lines; what line dares wound Sun or Moon? The Day is the sovereign—it can wound all states of decline and vitality; the Month is the general outline—it can restrain both active and still lines. The original hexagram is the stem and beginning; the derived hexagram is the branch and ending. Lines appearing in the natal palace may be taken for distant years; images hidden in other palaces may be inferred for recent days.
The Inner trigram is self, the Outer is others—generation and combination are favored. The Response is the guest, the World is the host—both restraint and clash are significant. When I generate others, half auspicious; when others restrain me, wholly ominous. When World and Response are both void, both parties currently retreat in regret. When host and guest both activate, both sides will later change positions. When the two middle lines activate, residence and movement encounter obstacles; when the Body position is void, fortune and misfortune are both hollow.
For anything desiring longevity, the Function line should be still; for seeking release or disengagement, the Primary Image favors crossing and repetition. When the Function is Wood and Metal arrives, following good fortune does not bring good; when the Function is Earth and Fire arrives, though ominous, it is not truly ominous. The Origin Star must generate and support; the Fear Star most favors being suppressed. When the Function line is vigorous, affairs surely prosper; when the Primary Image is weak and declining, logically one should worry.
When the hexagram has no misfortune yet the Function line loses its position, one must wait for the value day to succeed. When the lines are auspicious yet the Primary Image encounters void, see when the clash arrives and it can be achieved. When the Fear Image multiplies and activates while the Function Image has no master, later times will encounter harm. When the Function is weak and declining, the Origin Star is extreme, the Fear Star will meet wounding on another day. When one spirit activates alone, this image is not minor. When five positions all activate, the still line is most important. The World and Hexagram Body are the exclusive masters—one must not speak of them lightly. The moving vigorous image holds authority—it must be considered with weight.
Auspiciousness hiding within misfortune is not auspicious; misfortune containing auspiciousness is not ominous. The Year Star governs matters of the passing year; the Hour maintains command over the present day. The Day Master proclaims authority over a single day, yet can constrain accumulated months; the Month General issues commands over three ten-day periods, yet can govern the entire year. The Body hexagram is the body of endeavors; the Officer line is the master of plans. If the hexagram has no Body, all matters lack direction; if the lines contain no Officer, every plan is in vain.
When the hexagram moves with two Bodies, affairs arrive in rapid succession; when lines stir with two Officers, calamities come repeatedly. When the Officer line neither moves nor is void, it is a joyful matter of the heart; when the Body image neither clashes nor sinks, it is the authority of one's wishes. When the Day carries an ominous spirit into activity, calamity befalls elders; when the Hour approaches an evil killer with crossing, disaster strikes the young. Yang activity causes men worry; yin activation brings women misfortune.
When Parents move, Offspring, monks, and Taoists suffer; harmful insects and livestock go unreaped. When Parents are void, elders, houses, and boats suffer loss; written matters do not come to completion. When Siblings move, wives suffer calamity and servants encounter trouble; wealth dissipates and nothing succeeds. When Siblings are void, friends are severed and brothers perish; family property is clean and peaceful, yet children are few. When Offspring moves, husbands suffer harm and official positions retreat; among the people there is celebration without calamity. When Offspring is void, sons are lost and livestock diminished; the court lacks virtue and abounds in sycophants. When Wealth moves, parents suffer harm and literary pursuits prove difficult. When Wealth is void, wives and servants encounter distress; profit and resources reach despair. When Officer moves, there is harm to the flock—illness and litigation begin to sprout. When Officer is void, one offends against the anvil—official success is not achieved.
Having discussed the activations and voids of the Six Relatives, next I address the movements and combinations of the Six Animals. Azure Dragon signifies kindness, purity, and nobility—an omen of joy, profit, and reputation. Flying Serpent governs vanity, fear, and fright—disturbing dreams and anxieties interfere. Vermilion Bird favors messages and documents, and also governs flame and litigation. White Tiger benefits military officers and childbirth, and can summon mourning garments and blood light. Hooked Chen governs fields, official service, tombs, and delays. Dark Warrior governs women, thieves, waterways, and treachery.
When the Dragon travels West, half is judged auspicious; when the Tiger moves South, it is somewhat reckoned ominous. In Earth, Dark Warrior means thieves are no concern; within Wood, Hooked Chen means fields are not yet ripe. When the Vermilion Bird falls into rivers and lakes, lawsuits are easily resolved; when the Serpent wanders among grass and trees, strange dreams transform into something else. When Hooked Chen sinks, lands are not held in perpetuity; when Dark Warrior is void, thieves do not invade or defraud. When Serpent is void and idle, monster dreams are dissolved; when Dragon sinks, phantom pregnancy is not a celebration. When the Bird avoids, legal disputes do not arise; when the Tiger lurks, mourning and filial observances are of no concern.
When vigorous and flourishing, good and bad fortune arrive swiftly; when weak and idle, misfortune and blessing respond slowly. Activity brings change; voidness brings neither worry nor joy. Long Life and Imperial Prosperity—prosperity for distant days; Cap and Arrival at Office—flourishing for the near term. Decline and Sickness are half-ominous omens; suffering restraint is wholly ominous. Fetus and Nurture are half-auspicious signs; receiving generation is wholly auspicious. The Tomb and Vault, when encountering clash and break, become active and stirring; Death and Extreme, when not encountering generation and support, are as if absent and fallen.
When Earth arrives at You within Metal visits and Metal arrives at Wu, it encounters defeat without accomplishment. When Fire approaches Mao and Water approaches You, reversal generates yet with full force. When Earth encounters Si it is extreme—one cannot call it generation; when Metal encounters Si it is born—finally one cannot call it restrained. These judgments rely on Sun, Moon, and transformed lines, not on World, Response, and moving images. When the Si line holds the World, it necessarily wounds Metal; when the Si image moves and activates, it can assist Earth. The Tomb-Vault is called storage—there are methods of punishment, breaking, and opening. Voidness is called sinking—there are methods of filling deficiencies and repairing hollows.
When sinking receives generation from the Month General, it is not wholly sunken; when voidness is restrained by the general outline, it is truly void. Lines that are vigorous and flourishing wait one旬 (ten-day cycle) before use; images that are weak and idle remain useless to the end. Hidden spirits meeting this are still minor; appearing lines encountering it are even worse. When the Origin Star sinks, difficulties and obstacles are many; when the Fear Guest perishes, disasters and setbacks forever cease. When the male is void, distant travels are unfavorable; when the female is void, recent misfortune approaches. When Wealth is void, riches are not abundant; when Officer is void, nobility is not glorious. When Offspring is void, sons and daughters face solitude; when Parents is void, houses decline into ruin. When Siblings are void, brothers and sisters lack strength; when the middle lines are void, matchmakers and guarantors lack ability.
When the Inner image is void, for residence one should not remain in old places; when the Outer official sinks, for relocation one should not seek new directions. Unforeseen calamities—encountering the sinking body can still be rescued; lingering illnesses—encountering voidness, fate cannot return to life. A void World means one's own heart is negligent and lazy; a void Response means the other's intention waivers. Void arising from activity is not truly void; emerging from the Tomb after being pushed open is not entering the Tomb.
All values of Xun Void (ten-day void) or Month Breaks—the auspicious cannot generate and combine with things, the ominous cannot restrain people. Of the ominous, those in the Xun are killers—one must distinguish their rise and decline; of the evil, those in the Month Break—regardless of generation or restraint. Every matter delights in the active vitality within voidness; everything fears clash with what has combined. Encountering combination, even misfortune finds easy accomplishment; meeting clash, even good fortune becomes difficult to complete. When combination is broken open by clash, there is not the slightest strength left; when the Extreme encounters generation, there is several-fold merit.
The Three Combinations and Three Punishments also have true and false discussions; the Six Harmonies and Six Combinations—how could they lack generation and restraint distinctions? When Zi meets Shen and Chen, lacking the mouse tooth, one does not take it. When Wood meets Hai and Mao, failing the goat horn, what harm is there? Yin, Si, and Shen all present constitute the Killer. Chou, Xu, Wei with one missing do not form punishment. When the Function uses Chen with Mao harming it, it is truly a calamity; when the Function uses Hai with Shen piercing it, it is no disaster. When the Function uses Xu combining with Mao, being restrained it turns ominous instead; when the Function uses You harmonizing with Chen, receiving generation it indeed proves auspicious. When combination carries generation, all matters encountering it bring delight. When harm carries restraint, everything committed against it sees worry and difficulty. Punishment wounds flesh and bone; piercing causes discord among relatives and neighbors. The Six Harmonies are all lauded as auspicious—but for matters of banishment, releasing someone from prison, this is not appropriate. The Six Clashes are each dreaded as ominous spirits—yet for dissolving litigation and escaping disaster, it turns profitable instead.
Azure Dragon as wealth and fortune is auspicious—breaking it is inauspicious. White Tiger as an ominous spirit brings blame—but employing it is not ominous. The Day Establishment is not truly a Month Break; the Month Establishment does not become a Xun Void. A still hexagram meeting clash becomes active; a line finding rest meeting combination becomes harmony. When activity meets clash, for warfare it disperses; when activity encounters combination, it is delayed through entanglement. When the Function is vigorous with maintenance, even encountering an ominous star it is difficult for it to create disaster. When the Primary is weak without rescue, even encountering an auspicious luminary, how can that be good?
Behind the Body and behind the World, including heavy lines, all pertain to the past. Before the Body and before the World, including exchange positions, each governs the future. You Hun (Wandering Soul) favors traveling abroad; Gui Hun (Returning Soul) benefits returning home. The Inner is substance, the Outer is function: encountering generation is auspicious, restraint is inauspicious. Activity is swift, stillness is slow: seeing combination means completion, clash means dispersal. Generation governs issuance; Tomb governs storage: the hidden determines the future, the flying determines the past. Yin governs the deviant; Yang governs the upright: decline shows details scarce; vitality shows details many.
Matters have size and scale, beginnings and endings, urgency and delay—each must be examined according to its cause. Hexagrams open the before and after; flying and hidden spirits establish the correct orientation. Having clarified the principles, first seek the inner and outer three lines as flying, correct, and former hexagram. Next observe the yin and yang dual images as hidden, transformed, and latter hexagram. When the hexagram is still with no transformation, only then take the mutual (nuclear) hexagrams. When the World is void with no master, rely upon the Body. For the surplus and deficit within the derived hexagram, the transformed lines have already fixed it; for the regret and fault within the mutual hexagram, substance and function take priority. Carefully observe the rise and decline of the hidden image; duly examine the movement and stillness of the flying spirit. For distant times, extrapolate years and months; for near times, look at days and hours.
When the Parents line moves, it restrains Offspring: the sick have no medicine and lie in a coma. Marriages and children should prove difficult to obtain; business dealings trouble the heart with no profit remaining. For distant travelers from afar, letters and messages move; for official disputes and filings, principle should first be divided. For the scholar-official taking the examinations, the Yellow List (imperial pass list) is attained; for lost property and fugitives, one must file complaints.
When the Offspring line moves and restrains Officer/Spirit: in illness, seeking a doctor brings recovery. Travelers and merchants are healthy and well; marriage is beautiful—a fate from previous lives. A birth-giving woman bears children easily to raise. Lawsuits and arguments are empty talk and affairs lack completion; seeking audience with the noble and pursuing fame—do not advance; holding fast to the old is naturally sustainable.
When the Wealth line stands and restrains the document: seeking office and reputation is emptiness. When businessmen trade with officials, wealth flows; marriage proceeds smoothly and joyfully without worry. Travelers outside are about to move; birth-giving women seeking spirits can have obstacles removed. Lost property remains still at home and has not exited; the sick suffer stomach wounds and spleen damage.
When Siblings activate and restrain Wealth: if the sick consult, they weep in grief; in examinations, essays match with no distinction; in ordinary divinations, one is certain to lose money. Harmful false words should exhaust the masses; travelers abroad have not yet returned home; cargo merchants all turn losses; seeking marriage and buying maidservants is difficult to arrange.
The Officer line has always restrained Siblings: marriage is not yet settled and breeds obstruction and hesitation. Illness afflicts the homestead, and the spirit of calamity approaches; changes and movement of the body are all inauspicious. Going abroad or fleeing will surely manifest disaster; litigation wounds the body and yields imprisonment. Trade and wealth are meager; gambling leads to loss; lost objects are difficult to find with much obscurity.
These are Master Jing Fang's methods of judgment—tested and none fail. If two lines move within the hexagram, these no longer apply.
Metal delights in Si and You, but fears Yin. Wood delights in Hai and Zi, but fears Si. Water delights in Shen and You, but fears Wu. Fire delights in Yin and Mao, but fears Shen. Earth delights in Wu and Shen, but fears Hai.
Master Younan said: When I read Hu Shuanghu's collected miscellaneous records of divination from the Han-Jin through Song periods, as well as Wu Ganquan's Yuan-Ming divination records, I find that all judgments were made directly from the Tuan (Judgment) and Yao (Line) texts, and their response was as certain as drum and mallet. Later diviners, upon obtaining the I texts that accord with the matter divined, need not restrict themselves to the methods of Jing Fang and Guan Lu that slight the supreme instructions of the Four Great Sages. Thus the study of divination requires first reading the I Ching.
Yelu Chucai said: At the beginning of the I Ching, the sixty-four hexagrams were used to show people examples of divination—indeed, an exhaustive array. Seek the way of lord and father in the Qian hexagram; seek the way of minister and son in Kun. For marriage, take Xian, Heng, Jian, and Guimei; for waiting, take Xu; for advancement, take Jin; for ascent, take Sheng; for reform, take Ge. For military campaigns, use Shi; for disputes, use Song. For gathering, use Cui; for dispersal, use Huan. For retreat, use Dun; for endurance, use Kun (Imprisonment). For peace, use Tai and Ding; for peril, use Yi and Jian. For abundance, use Da You and Feng; for ruin, use Sun and Gu. The Family in the house; the Traveler on the road. Ji Ji and Wei Ji, Da Guo and Xiao Guo, Da Xu and Xiao Xu—the meanings of gain and loss, advance and retreat. Though the hexagram names comprise merely seventy-nine characters, their literary meanings are straightforward and quite sufficient for decision. This was already the case before King Wen composed the hexagram judgments; how much more so, with 384 lines revealing transformation. Therefore, when a person accumulates sincerity and consults the yarrow, the spirit responds. The hexagram and line texts respond to what was asked: for marriage divination, obtaining Xian and Heng—"prospects for a wife is fortunate," "do not take this maiden," "the maiden's marriage is auspicious," "Guimei rightly portends evil." For residences: "enriching the family, great fortune," "a secluded household—remorse vanishes," "husband and wife separate," "the family cries harshly; wife and children giggle," "entering the home palace—one sees not his wife." For travel: "advantageous to cross great rivers; profitable to have somewhere to go," "not advantageous to cross great rivers; do not move." For official advancement: "not eating at home is auspicious," "not serving kings or lords; exalting one's own conduct." For seeking heirs: "having sons, the father no blame," "obtaining a concubine because of her son," "the wife pregnant but failing to give birth," "the wife three years without conceiving." For expeditions: "advantageous to invade and punish," "not advantageous to march troops." For hunting: "hunting gains three kinds of game," "the hunt yields no fowl." By all such examples, the spirit perceives sincerity and clearly declares—no need to speculate, conjecture, or create separate judgments. If the Tuan and line texts do not respond to the matter divined, only then take the transforming line and its single movement, match each with generation and restraint, along with the Twelve Life Stages, to judge fortune and misfortune.
Liu Bowen said: When the line spirit is auspicious and the I text is ominous, thereafter auspicious, then ominous; when the line spirit is ominous and the I text auspicious, at first ominous, afterward auspicious.
According to the Cong Wang Lu records, Cheng Ji's astonishing divinations all concerned one-line movements, and he always took the texts of the transformed hexagram's line for judgment—none failed to hit the mark. This is appended for reference.
Zhou Jingxu said: The Dun hexagram brings many punishments and harms; Gou and Xian bring poverty and degrading old age. Tun, Jing, and Pi likewise—misfortune arises without cause. Autumn Gu and Winter Meng are ominous; illness is hard to escape. Spring reaching Jin and Xiao Guo—even then shall come bitter weeping and bitterness. The official tally fears Feng and Jing; Da Guo makes escaping prison difficult. The Bi image brings much litigation; divining this meets ruin. Meeting Sui, wealth is lost and setback; encountering Lin brings much argument. The eight pure hexagrams and Zhuang and Wang—scheming brings falsehood and obstacle.
Tomb-Extreme: Li transforms into Qian; Kan, Gen, Kun transform into Xun; Qian and Dui transform into Gen; Zhen and Xun transform into Kun.
The transformed hexagram inverts the original: Reverse-Moan: Qian (Earth-Mountain) with Bo (Mountain-Earth); Guimei (Thunder-Lake) with Sui (Lake-Thunder); Xiaoχoǔ (Wind-Heaven) as Gou (Heaven-Wind); Ji Ji (Water-Fire) with Wei Ji (Fire-Water).
Jing Fang said: From the first to the fifth without movement, then again fly from the fourth downward. Flying upward and flying downward returns to the original body—this is the scheme of the sixteen transformations. For example, in the Qian palace: the first transformation is Gou; when it reaches the fifth it is Bo. The top line, being the ancestral temple, never changes. Flying downward from the fourth gives Jin as the Wandering Soul; flying downward from the third gives Lü as the Outer Admonition; from the second, Ding as the Inner Admonition; from the first, Da You as the Returning Soul. Flying upward from the second gives Li as the Severed Fate; from the third, Shi Ke as Blood and Pulse; from the fourth, Yi as Flesh and Muscle; from the fifth, Yi as Bone and Skeleton. Flying downward from the fourth gives Wu Wang as the Outer Coffin; from the third, Tong Ren as the Burial Mound; from the second, Qian returns to the original body. In all sixteen transformations, with the eight palaces treated likewise.
When encountering transformation returning to the natal palace hexagram, fortune and calamity should be weighed at ten-tenths. For the Outer Admonition hexagram, fortune and misfortune come from outside; for the Inner Admonition hexagram, they originate from within. For the Bone and Skeleton hexagram: the living become wasted and thin; the dead go unburied. For the Coffin and Outer Coffin hexagram: illness certainly leads to death. For Blood and Pulse hexagram: it indicates blood disease and discharge. For Severed Fate hexagram: matters are repeatedly reversed; one becomes solitary, unaligned with the times. For Wandering Soul Flesh and Muscle hexagram: the spirit is confused and dull, as in dreams and folly. For Returning Soul Burial Mound hexagram: the grave is auspicious, and affairs may succeed.
