易隐
Master Younan said: In divination for household matters, there are two scenarios.
Settled Residence Divination 🏠: When someone divines regarding their settled residence, first examine the inner and outer hexagrams. The inner hexagram represents the dwelling; the outer hexagram represents the people. If they are in the flourishing or helpful phases (wang xiang), both household members and the residence will prosper. If in the declining, imprisoned, or deadly phases (xiu qiu si), the dwelling lacks vitality, people and livestock suffer losses, and the family enterprise struggles to develop. When inner and outer hexagrams generate, harmonize, or compare favorably with each other, it is auspicious. When they punish, clash, overcome, or harm each other, it is inauspicious. Void (kong wang) is especially ominous.
If the hexagram patterns are decaying or void, further examine the line spirits (yao shen). Take the second line as the dwelling and the fifth line as the people. If the people overcome the dwelling, the construction will be orderly and neat. If the dwelling overcomes the people, the household will not flourish, and disasters will befall the family members. If the second line is flourishing, the house has many rooms; if the fifth line is flourishing, the household is populous. Declining, imprisoned, and deadly phases are inauspicious; generating and harmonizing phases are auspicious; punishment, clash, overcoming, and harm are inauspicious. If the line spirits are further void, it is void upon void — inevitably signaling the calamity of family extermination.
Next, examine the Six Relatives (liu qin). The World line (shi) represents oneself; the Response line (ying) represents the wife. A yang Father line represents the father; a yin Father line represents the mother. A yang Brother line represents elder/younger brothers; a yin Brother line represents sisters. A yang Wealth line represents the wife; a yin Wealth line represents concubines, maidservants, and servants. A yang Offspring line represents sons; a yin Offspring line represents daughters. A yang Officer/Ghost line represents the grandfather; a yin Officer/Ghost line represents the grandmother. When the Useful line (yong yao) appears in the hexagram, it is auspicious. When the Useful line is flourishing, carries auspicious spirits, and receives support from the Grand Year (Tai Sui), Monthly General, and Day Officer, it is auspicious. When the Useful line is declining, imprisoned, dead, void, or hidden, it is inauspicious. When it moves with inauspicious spirits, or is punished, harmed, overcome, or broken by the Three Transmissions (Grand Year, Monthly General, Day Officer), it is inauspicious. When the Useful line holds an Officer/Ghost, hides under one, or transforms into one, a yang Ghost indicates legal disputes and lawsuits, while a yin Ghost inevitably brings illness and calamity. Whenever the Useful line is concealed beneath an Officer/Ghost, there will be illness, litigation, obstructions to all affairs, and difficulties in coming and going.
The Three Generals (Grand Year, Monthly General, Day Officer) are matched with the four seasons to determine the timing of responses: If Wood carries auspicious spirits, joy comes in spring 🌱; if a Fire Ghost carries inauspicious influences, calamity arises in summer 🔥; if Metal governs Wealth, profit is gained in autumn; if Water meets Brothers, wealth is lost in winter 🌊; if an Earth line carries auspiciousness or inauspiciousness, judgment follows its dominant month (Chen — 3rd month, Wei — 6th month, Xu — 9th month, Chou — 12th month). If void occurs, auspicious spirits in void turn inauspicious, while inauspicious influences in void turn auspicious.
Beyond the major principles above, matters concerning windows, beds, latrines, gates, roads, incense altars, beams, graves, and livestock are each examined for fortune or misfortune separately.
Event-Specific Divination ⚡: When someone divines about specific events, one searches for immediate fortune or misfortune at hand. When the Parents line moves, children are harmed and livestock suffer loss. When the Brothers line moves, the wife is harmed and property is lost. When the Officer/Ghost line moves, brothers are harmed, adults and children grow uneasy, and legal troubles arise. When the Offspring line moves, it overcomes the Officer/Ghost (the husband), indicating demotion from office. When the Azure Dragon Ghost overcomes, calamity arises within joyful occasions. When the Vermilion Bird Ghost or Vermilion Bird Brother overcomes, there are verbal disputes, gossip, and financial depletion. When the Rising Snake Ghost overcomes, there are frequent unfounded frights. When the Dark Warrior Ghost overcomes, there will certainly be private treachery, theft, or loss of servants and bondmaids. When the Hooked Spirit Ghost overcomes, there is inevitable entanglement over fields and land, with unclear deeds and contracts. When the White Tiger Ghost overcomes, it signifies mourning, warfare, fighting injuries, and fall-related injuries.
If the second line is inauspicious, the window spirits are unsettled; if the third line is inauspicious, the bed mat is disturbed; if the fifth line is inauspicious, the incense altar is restless. This is how one examines the six lines for latrines, pestles, gates, paths, graves, livestock, and so on, deducing each position one by one.

The core of the Yiyin household divination system lies in the correlative thinking of "human-dwelling unity":
The Human-Dwelling Relationship: The inner/outer hexagram logic of household divination is essentially an interactive model of environment and humanity. The inner hexagram (dwelling) flourishing represents high-quality living conditions with abundant qi; the outer hexagram (people) flourishing represents excellent mental states and rising fortune for the residents. "When people overcome the dwelling, the construction is orderly" means that human initiative can improve the living environment; "when the dwelling overcomes people, the household does not flourish" suggests the suppressive influence of environment upon people. This aligns closely with the bidirectional interaction theory of "environment shapes behavior, behavior also reshapes environment" in modern environmental psychology.
Social Changes in Six-Relative Positioning: The positioning of yin Wealth as concubines and maidservants reflects the ancient family structure. In the modern context, this line position can correspond to domestic service personnel, tenants, or non-core family members. The distinction between yang elder brothers and yin sisters can be extended to the different role functions of brothers and sisters in family affairs. This represents the necessary adaptation of traditional culture within modern social structures.
Real-world Mapping of Six-Spirit Misfortunes:
Dialectical Thinking on Emptiness (Void): "Auspicious things turning void brings misfortune; inauspicious things turning void instead bring fortune" embodies the simple dialectical wisdom of the ancients—while it is regrettable when good fortune turns to emptiness, it is fortunate when disasters turn to emptiness. This philosophy of "emptiness" resonates with the modern management concept that "risk not materializing equals opportunity."
The Warning of "Void Upon Void": When the hexagram pattern is declining and void, and the line spirit is also void, the original text declares it "the calamity of clan extermination." In modern terms, this extreme expression should be understood as: when the living environment (dwelling) and the state of residents (people) simultaneously fall into extremely low energy states, with void at the core line positions, it signifies the risk of total systemic collapse of the family—not merely material decline, but potentially multidimensional systemic issues involving family relationships, health, and finances. 🌱
Decision Reference for Choosing a Settled Home:
Decision Guidance for Event-Specific Divination:
Time Planning for Response Windows:
Holographic Correspondence and the Unity of Heaven and Humanity: The Ghost Valley division of lines correlates one hexagram's six lines with family relationships, courtyard layouts, livestock, and implements one by one. Its deep philosophy is universal holography—any single part contains the information of the whole. The fortune of a family can be read in full from one hexagram pattern; the fortune or misfortune of a residence is reflected upon every single line position. This thinking finds a distant resonance in the holographic universe hypothesis of contemporary quantum physics.
The Philosophy of "Emptiness": Void carries duality in household divination—inauspicious matters encountering void become auspicious, while auspicious matters encountering void become inauspicious. "Void" does not mean absolute nothingness, but rather a state of undetermined possibility. A void line may indicate either a crisis yet to manifest or a blessing yet to arrive. This reminds people: in the face of uncertainty, neither excessive anxiety nor blind optimism is warranted—one should maintain vigilance, prepare actively, and transform "emptiness" into an opportunity for "substance."
The Profound Ethics of Human-Dwelling Interaction: The original text emphasizes that "when people overcome the dwelling, construction is orderly; when the dwelling overcomes people, the household does not flourish." This is not merely a judgment of the living environment, but embodies a relational responsibility between people and their environment. Humans have the responsibility to improve their dwellings, and dwellings have the duty to nurture their inhabitants. When the two generate and harmonize with each other, there is "peaceful dwelling and joyful work"; when they clash and harm each other, there is "unsettled residence and stagnant enterprise." This thinking offers traditional wisdom for contemporary habitation ethics—a quality living environment requires active human stewardship, and an optimized environment in turn nourishes body and mind. 🌱
