When the used yao and responsive yao carry wealth, blessing spirit, or courier horse, facing the gate yao and moving: They will arrive imminently. Facing the road yao and moving: Already on the way. Moving and encountering void, or moving with retreat spirit (dingchou, dingwei, renchen, renxu are retreat spirits), or transforming into retreat spirit: They have set out but turned back. The heart of travellers divination lies in the interaction between the used yao and responsive yao. Movement means travelling, stillness means staying; thriving means soon arrival, resting means delayed return. The six yao positions divide the traveller's journey into six segments: feet, body, companions, horse, vehicle, destination—each yao, when harmed by ghost, corresponds to an obstruction at that particular stage of the journey.
The concept of "moving yet encountering void" is deeply meaningful — appearing to act while being empty in substance. This corresponds to many "seemingly busy yet ineffective" states in life. The wisdom of divination lies in: action itself does not constitute meaning; only action that is fulfilled and materialised has true effect.
When the used yao and responsive yao generate the self yao, combine with it, or overcome it: There is intention to return. When they punish, clash, or harm the self yao: Unwilling to return. When quiet yet generating or overcoming the self yao: The heart harbours thoughts of return; they wait for the day or month of the clash-trigger to set out, and arrive during the flourishing month-day.
When encountering void but moving secretly: The heart wishes to return, but the body has not yet moved. When the used yao and responsive yao carry the courier horse and move to generate the self yao: They will return immediately. Carrying the courier horse in the outer trigram and moving to punish or clash the self yao: They have gone far away and will not return.
In moving-soul trigrams, six-clash hexagrams, responding yao moving and used yao moving: They have gone far. In returning-soul trigrams, six-harmony hexagrams, responding yao moving and used yao moving: They will return soon.
When the used yao or responsive yao is resting or imprisoned, or encounters retreat spirit moving, or carries the courier horse present but void in movement : They will not return for many years. Carrying Dark Warrior and Pool of Salt, encountering the day-chan to bind them: The traveller is indulging in secret romantic affairs.
When the used yao or responsive yao encounters void, death, tomb, absolute, or embryo, or transforms into void/death/tomb/absolute/embryo: In severe cases, death; in milder cases, illness. Being punished, harmed, overcome, or broken; or transforming into punishment/harm/overcome/break: If not being bullied, then certain calamity will arise.
Adding Azure Dragon in movement: They will surely be pleased with themselves. Adding Vermilion Bird in movement: They will send a letter first. Adding Flying Snake in movement: There will be fright and alarm. Adding White Tiger in movement: Guard against robbery. Adding Dark Warrior in movement: They will encounter petty people.
