When heaven and earth were not yet divided, the primordial chaos first separated, and the two principles of yin and yang began to manifest. Heaven established the Four Seasons to complete its image, while humanity arranged the Six Ren to correspond to its directions. The origins and ends of fortune and misfortune arise from the likes and dislikes of the human heart; the beginnings of calamity and blessing lie in the softness or hardness of what is employed 🌱.
In ancient times, the Yellow Emperor suffered the rebellion of Chi You, and the Dark Maiden descended her spirit to transmit the method to Feng Hou. Using the month general added to the current hour, the Five Elements were used to determine conquest and opposition. The added earthly branches divided inner and outer, distinguishing yin and yang; the revolving celestial plate separated forward and reverse, dividing north and south. The method of examining doubts used the direction from which one comes as its standard.
First establish what image the lesson body presents, then observe the spirits and generals to deduce accordingly. The Nobleman and Minor Auspicious — in the transmissions both indicate good fortune; Tai Yi and Fei Serpent — throughout beginning and end all speak of danger. Thus one seeks out the hidden auspiciousness, only by examining in detail the depth of meaning. Harm combined with Tai Chang, movement and stillness bring surprise to respected elders; Virtue riding Zhu Que, deliberation and planning leave officials without fault.
There are also Gou Chen bearing a sword, Bai Hu holding mourning — great inauspicious omens. Qing Long overcome by conquest means meager wealth; Liu He bearing joy means auspicious marriage. Xuan Wu acting as a bathing basin, embracing illness, the soul returns to flowing waters; Tian Kong holding transmission, hoping for news, a servant makes his way to the corridor. Tai Yin at Si Wu brings disgrace; Tian Hou at Chen Xu harms pregnancy. Yue Yan and Liu Ding — often the household invites strange anomalies; You Shen and Ben Ming — frequently dreams portend fright and alarm.
First regard the Fire Ghost, then examine the Metal Killing; the residence should guard against fire 🔥, affairs indicate damage and ruin. Zhi Fu, Fei Lian, Tian Mu, Huo Guang, Tian Guai, Tian Gui, You Hun, Yue Xiu — these are called the Eight Demons; the residence will certainly see calamity. Where the Nobleman punishes, Chen added to Meng creates demons; Hua Gai arriving at the palace, one knows the year brings restoration. At times there are rest, detention, death, decline — brothers, wives, children. When thriving and prospering, compare with people; when resting and detained, things take on form.
The stem represents elders; the branch speaks of the lowly and mean. The branch overcoming the stem brings misfortune to the venerable; the stem controlling the branch brings fatigue to the young. Upper and lower mutually generating — dwelling in harmony within and concord without; generals and spirits meeting in union — visiting brings joy to host and guest alike. None but the lesson image traces its source to the Tian Yi in its transmission. The nobleman approaching Kui Gang, in public affairs changes of office and authority; again proceeding to Chong and Xiang, visiting nobility stirs other households.
The form of the lesson being fixed, the nature of what comes stirs much speculation. Ren Xin knows much of movement and stillness; Fan Yin especially concerns coming and going. Yuan Shou venerable spirit — actions should look to it as leader; Kong Wang yin ghost — added to plans, dispatch intermediaries. Long Zhan does not leave the gate; Xuan Tai wishes to divine concerning infants. Bu Bei without lewdness — certainly there is private scheming that brings slander; Ba Mao Lian Ru — what harm in gathering by kind to seek wealth? Tian Yu imprisonment; San Jiao hidden disaster. Mao Xing returning, guard against danger; You Zi the merchant has not returned. Zhan Guan fleeing and escaping, plan for swiftness; Cheng Xuan favored summons, do not wander hesitantly. San Qi Liu Yi interweaving — continuous joy! Si Sha Wu Mu clashing with each other — sorrow before long.
Then there are Jian Ji, Cha Wei, Zhui Xu, Luan Shou — Jian Ji means choices should adapt with changes; Cha Wei rewards rash advance with calamity. The day approaching the hour position brings two surnames dwelling together; the branch going to the stem palace entrusts one body in pairing. Certainly disaster arises from Jiu Chou, calamity rises from Er Fan. Encountering Jue Si harms parents; seeing Wu Lu means few descendants. Listless on the pillow, difficult to recover — alas, one encounters Po Hua; in a daze, spirit unsettled — certainly one meets Fei Hun. There are Qu Zhi, Yan Shang, Run Xia, Cong Ge — encountering auspicious generals brings companions following; seeing fierce killings brings branches breaking; perhaps indicating public disputes, perhaps suffering disaster and distress. The inner going forth and outer — oneself seeking; yang entering yin — the other party searching. The yong spirit gaining a tomb, at the end of long life there is no worry; auspicious generals entering the transmission, with emperor's vigor at the end there is gain. And when Tan She the day overcomes, Hao Shi the hour encroaches — hoping for a traveler's arrival exists, but expecting affairs to succeed rarely happens. Gui Ren governing in harmony with virtue supporting — loyal ministers and filial sons; Tian Yi moving contrary with killings activated — sycophants and false friends.
Moreover, the lesson examples are extremely numerous; how could investigation exhaust them all? If nobility and killings can be relied upon, it is the spirits and generals that are the key. When the hour meets earth's vigor, riding Tian Hou, one loses clothing; when the ether involves water in rest, bearing earth spirits harms the kidneys. Xuan Wu riding Wu means change of office; Bai Hu at Shen You means litigation and strife. Gang acting as Tai Yin — servants and slaves are not simple and honest; Shen acting as Zhu Que — secret letters certainly arise on the journey. Fei Serpent at Si Wu brings strange dreams; Liu He at Yin Mao brings kinship and affection. Water meeting Qiao and She — untimely death by violence; wood encountering Gou and Hu — beams surely break under the three punishments. Yin acting as Da Ji — monks' vows; Xu as Bai Hu — dogs startled. Gou Chen at Mao Yin — arguments and litigation; Gua Su at Zi Wu — solitary and alone. Dragon bearing Sheng Guang, on Ren Gui days the wife is pregnant; Chang carrying Xiao Ji, at Shen You Chen adorned with ornaments of office. Chou arriving at Xu — foot ailment; Yin added to Si — kitchen changes. Earth overcoming water, gurgling 🌊; metal felling wood, clinking. The origins of mutual generation and conquest, regard vigor and decline; the roots of auspiciousness and inauspiciousness, distinguish their weight. Good and evil have their times; advance and retreat rejoice together. Divining residence — avoid overcoming the person; inquiring about illness — fear entering the tomb. Discussing public litigation — abhor imprisonment and detention; seeking promotion — one requires seal and ribbon. Distant gates, far doors — awaiting traveling guests who have not arrived; yang few, yin many — bearing a son should not be mistaken. Seeking distinction and recommendation — examination papers must match the examiner's intent; passing the provincial examinations and ascending in rank — the end of transmission must encounter the Emperor's Seat.
Alas! The most abstruse of arts is none deeper than the lessons; the most distant of paths lies only in the heart. When the heart is penetrated by the mysterious, the lessons also penetrate past and present. One without constancy of virtue should not divine; only one who rectifies himself can do so. Divination seeks sympathy and response; the will lies in precision and reverence.
Discussing the fortunes and misfortunes of human life according to the Five Elements, examine in detail the prosperity and decline of the lesson body's conquests and battles. Mutual generation brings joy; battle and conquest bring danger. The month general and earthly branch distinguish high and low; the human primordial and noble spirit determine noble and base. When the minister offends the ruler, the self wishes to encroach upon others; when the ruler overrides the minister, others come to harm the self. The human primordial overcoming the six yang spirits — yang males have misfortune; the heavenly stem battling the six yin generals — yin mothers encounter disaster.
Springs sinking beneath serpent and horse — certainly eye disorders arise — Ren Gui are the spring dragon, Si Wu are the serpent and horse; Hai Zi added to Si Wu, hence disorders of the eyes. Tiger bearing the ridge of the hills — certainly wasting diseases — Jia Yi wood overcomes Chen Xu earth. Red horse taking to the road — traveling merchants fall ill abroad — Bing Wu fire overcomes Geng Shen metal; Red serpent entering the household — women of the inner chambers meet hidden calamity — Ding Si fire overcomes Xin You metal, indicating hidden obscure disaster. Western woman coming to the eastern door — madness and silkworm harm — Xin You metal overcomes Yi Mao wood, silkworms not harvested, indicating wind-paralysis madness; White road reflecting on green forest — old men suffer loss through gambling — Geng Xin metal overcomes Yin Mao wood, Yin is mountain forest, Shen is road, harming the old man is the spirit tree Yin wood. Eastern bandit child — steals millet and breeds in the garden — Mao added to Chou, Chou is the metal treasury, also the millet garden; Diligent child of the Wei region — moves wine and food in the shop — the Wei region has the Well constellation, it is the spirit of wine and food, Xiao Ji is the wine shop.
Consumption and illness — because the Well constellation enters the heavenly gate; ghost poison and breath harm — because the Saturn star fills the North Sea — Chen Xu earth overcomes Hai Zi water. Earth ox encountering river pig — the bandit defeats himself — Chou belongs to the ox, Hai belongs to the pig, this is Chou entering Hai; Fire constellation encountering waves — yin women drown in wells — Ding Si fire entering Hai Zi water. Southern red crow — fears the floating waves of the North Sea — Bing Wu fire fears encountering Ren Zi water; Eastern azure dragon — fears the fierce howl of the west — the azure dragon fears the white tiger, Jia Yin wood meeting Shen metal. Dragon and tiger interweaving — harm in old age; Mounds and graves piled upon each other — solitude after decline — Chen Xu heavily added.
Heavenly ramparts are monks and Taoists — offending yin and hou certainly brings lewdness — Chen Xu are heavenly ramparts, temples and monasteries; if Liu He, Tian Hou, Tai Yin approach, or Tian Kong is encountered, it indicates lewdness. Also Mao You are the spirits of doors and gates; Golden well drinking cattle and sheep — tending graves on the mound certainly brings widowhood — Chou Wei Chen Xu mutually added, Chou Wei are cattle and sheep, Chen Xu are graves and mounds, the golden well is Wei. Encountering this indicates two surnames and three names, men widowers, women widows. Carrying water to sprinkle the forest trees — vainly nourishing others; waves overflowing the garden — in the end harming oneself — Zi water arriving at Mao is death, also Zi Mao mutually punish, water floating and overflowing. Heavenly gate and wooden door — mutual meeting brings harmony — referring to Mao Hai; Sweet wine and dark brew — mutual blending brings mutual benefit — Wei is wine, Hai is water, Wei Hai harmonious union brings wealth and prosperity. Inner chamber holding sole power — has the image of a fairy maiden riding clouds — Si arriving at Yin; Traveling merchant gaining profit — encounters the sign of wine splashing at the Kun gate — Wei is the wine spirit, added to the Kun direction indicates extraordinary profit. Wood image transforming at the heavenly gate — management changes of itself — Wei earth overcomes Hai water, Hai vigorous obtains Mao three-in-one forming wood image, transforming at the heavenly gate; White tiger disdaining black water — calamity and misfortune follow in succession — Shen tiger arriving at the realm of Hai water, this is metal substance in decline, certainly there will be disaster.
Cutting water at the crossroads — enjoy the distant age of a hundred years — Shen is the road, water arriving at Shen is vigorous, metal and water mutually generate, hence grand old age; Burying in a living earth — rejoice in the abundant continuity of offspring — Chen Xu are graves, added to Shen to take the meaning of life. Yin person with scarred face — red serpent walking into the metal gate — Si added to You, Ding added to Xin; Beautiful woman losing her voice — white pheasant flying to the Xun household — You added to Si Wu which overcomes it, indicating such omens.
Jade maiden roaming in the palace of the Dipper constellation — yin power brings great wealth — You and Chou three-in-one; Leading the ox to the road of the metal gate — blood livestock weak and thin — Chou arriving at You without vital force. Fairy maiden strolling in the garden — rejoicing in abundant production — Si fire is also the woman palace, arriving at Chou is fire generating earth, thus wealth abundant. Earth ox rushing to fire — fear loss and deficit, dark and speechless — Chou earth entering Si, Chou is the repository of Si fire, Wei is the tomb of wood, certainly harms the body. Too much earth lacks descendants — indicates solitude; Too much water delights in lewdness — water in flood. Wood abundant, branches flourishing; metal plentiful, body breaks. Fire's blaze blazing 🔥; much fire, temperament volatile. Water's form flowing 🌊; the nature must be gentle.
The Five Elements greatly avoid the conception encountering punishment; the four positions must beware of combat without authority. Metal approaching the Chou position, wood people encounter incomplete limbs — if water vigorous and a wood person encounters it, indicates harm to sinews and bones, incomplete limbs; water arriving at the Shen palace, the original destiny encounters drifting without anchor — if water vigorous and a wood person meets it, a male becomes a thief, a female becomes a prostitute. Fire blazing injures metal — sons of the frontier racing about; Mao flourishing breaks Chou — people scattering in fields and gardens. Lone wood meeting three metal blades — strictly guard against ghostly calamity; one metal meeting two fires melting — carefully prepare against heavenly disaster. Lone earth entering the defeated and exhausted land — seeing much wood, transmitted corpse and prolonged illness; weak water approaching the resting and imprisoned place — encountering Kun, constant worry of vomiting blood. The Five Elements most require mutual generation; the four positions especially dislike killing battles. If indeed one's mind is attentive and careful, naturally there will be no confusion and no error.
The golden mouth is mysterious and subtle; the entering of the formula is deep and abstruse. It can decide doubtful matters; it knows beforehand conditions not yet seen. Pointing direction and locating position, spirits and generals complete the mechanism of the lesson body; verifying killings and deducing primordials, fortune and misfortune are marvelous in the function of ghosts and spirits. Stem, spirit, general, position — one should establish noble and base, honored and humble; four images, three powers — one must distinguish high and low, above and below.
Stem overcoming spirit and losing office — others scheme to harm the self; spirit overcoming stem and advancing position — the self wishes to encroach upon others. General overcoming spirit — if not seeking wealth, certainly speaking of bodily illness; spirit overcoming general — if not catching thieves, certainly the wife is harmed. Position overcoming stem and spirit overcoming position — illness and official disaster; position generating spirit and general generating stem — seeking wealth brings joyful celebration. General overcoming stem direction — harming wife and concubine, ox lost and horse fallen; stem overcoming spirit position — guarding against thieves, wealth scattered and people parted. Position generating stem — seal and ribbon advance but descendants weak; stem generating position — descendants flourish but fame and rank are humble. Original sound all manifesting — wife and children can hardly be preserved long; wife prosperous, officer declining — father and mother should fear lack of longevity.
Pure metal brings division of paths in the road; complete wood brings affairs entangling the body. Much water brings ruin and dissipation, epilepsy and hemorrhoids in children; blazing fire brings fright and alarm, harm to wounded women. Pure earth means an ugly woman holds authority; solitary standing means the honored one gains no benefit. Earth entering the wood realm — signs of disputes over fields and houses; fire added above water — alarms of difficulty in childbirth. Water entering the earth realm — ulcerous disasters and imprisonment; fire approaching the metal ground — consumption and suffering entangle. Metal added upon fire indicates melting and dissolving; wood arriving in water becomes drifting and floating. Water approaching the fire position — alternating chills and fevers; wood entering the metal palace — verbal contention and dispute. Water added upon earth — competition over fields; earth entering water — much kidney disease arises.
Desiring to exhaust fortune and misfortune, further deduce the spirits and generals. In general, Gong Cao governs documents and wooden implements; Chuan Song is for news and travel. Tai Chong is for thieves and carriages and boats; Cong Kui is for gold, silver, and slaves. Chen is for fighting and litigation, also governing offenses against mourning; Xu concerns deceit and fraud, or is called seal and ribbon. Deng Ming is summons; Tai Yi is calamity not of the ordinary. Sheng Guang is ghosts and anomalies continuous; Shen Hou is lewdness and entanglement. Wei is clothing and banquets; Chou is fields and gardens. Da Ji and Xiao Ji acting as Gou Chen — litigation over fields and houses; He Kui and Cong Kui transforming into Liu He — fleeing slaves and servants. Yin Chen encountering Gou Chen — official punishment and imprisonment; Hai Yin meeting Bai Hu — illness and fright. Zi Mao with Xuan Wu in the same transmission — robbery is encountered; Si Hai meeting the courier horse harnessed together — galloping on the road. Chou Wei approaching Zhu Que — slander and cursing; Wei You added to the separation corner — the calamity of husband and wife separating. Where Kui Gang approaches — much litigation arises; Shen Wu combined — constant suspicion and indecision.
Now Tian Yi governs officials and the nobility; encountering conquest certainly means official displeasure. Fei Serpent divines fright and alarm; meeting punishment certainly is the fire demon. Zhu Que is documents, words, disputes; Liu He is joyful celebration, marriage. Gou Chen governs fighting, litigation, entanglement; Qing Long corresponds to marriage, wealth, and treasure. Tian Hou is treacherous heart, dark and hidden; Tai Yin is hidden, obscure, and private. Xuan Wu governs guarding against thieves' invasion; Tai Chang is the gathering of wine and food. Bai Hu governs death, mourning, roads; Tian Kong governs fraud, flight, and escape.
Spirits and generals moreover fear punishment and clashing; stem positions still guard against bearing killings. General bearing spirit, spirit bearing general — in this is profound subtlety; stem suffers punishment, position suffers killing — in the depths is obscurity. The spirits and generals of heaven have the subtle signs of addition and approach, hidden and manifest; the branches of earth have meanings hidden and invisible.
Thus Tai Sui suffering conquest — the venerable person has unforeseen disaster; Yue Jian suffering punishment — an elder brother has the calamity of drowning. Fierce spirit dwelling together with Bai Hu — weeping comes to the gate; Sang Diao combined with ghost realm — grief and sorrow move the earth. Yue Jian called the Azure Dragon — encountering auspicious generals brings increase of goods; Yue Po named the White Tiger — meeting fierce spirits, illness collapses one. Wasted and violent death in extirpation of calamity; lewdness and disorder arise from illicit affairs. Po Hao causes loss of livestock and loss of wealth; Qing Long adds persons to the family. Qiu Mu and Sang Che combined with killings — the sick one certainly faces mourning curtains; De He Jie Shen and pardon decrees — the prisoner certainly obtains release from calamity. Tian Yi is suitable for inquiring about illness; Sang Men does not avoid fright and alarm. You Hun Ku Sha — disaster without ordinary cause certainly hits; Wang Shen Yue Yan — calamity and misfortune are hard to escape. Star and moon are punishments and killings; Tai Sui is disaster and wonder. Tian Ma and Yi Ma entering the enclosure — it acts swiftly; Gu Xu and Si Qi in the same transmission — movements hesitate. De He Sheng Shen approaching the use — affairs have achievement; killings combined with Tian Kong in the four lessons — having images but no reliance. In the places of decline and defeat of the Five Elements, human feelings are severed; in the places where the four positions flourish, affairs become glorious. Where spirits and generals bathe, the matter divined is exposed.
Gong Cao added to the positions of Bi and Mao, He Kui belonging to the direction of Di and Fang — double locks are used in the west; seeing metal, the passes do not close. Setting up barriers for defense in the eastern position — seeing wood destroys the barriers leaving no defense. You added to Mao is called the lock; seeing fire above again, the lock is broken.

If the divination is about escape, flight, or fugitives, look at the rise and decline of the lesson body. If the divination is regarding money, goods, or commodities, only when you look at the position with vitality do you know. If reporting to the palace, drafting a petition, examine its good and evil for the sovereign and subject. If in warfare, martial arts — mastery is seen only in contingency. Knowing that if thief bandits encounter Gu False, pursuit finds no catch, if Corpse-Vitality arrives at a tomb with ruination, illness does not recover. Observe the shape of the celestial spirit and the earthly beast, examine the state hidden within men.
Song of the Ten Stems' Dwelling Places: Jia's lesson resides in Yin, Yi's lesson resides in Chen. The lessons of Bing and Wu reside in Si, no need for debate: Ding and Ji reside in Wei, Geng resides in Shen. Xin resides in Xu, Ren resides in Hai, this is the truth. Gui resides in the palace of Chou — clearly not with the Four Cardinal Spirits.
