Its underlying logic projects the hierarchical structure of "the Day Stem as the general, the Day Branch as the troops" onto the battlefield coordinate system: the Stem represents the external and the guest, the Branch the internal and the host; Tian Gang added to Meng, Zhong, or Ji (the four corner/opening, fixed/balanced, or closing positions in the twelve Earthly Branches) determines battle, defense, advance, or retreat; You Du observes the enemy's approach, Lu Du observes the enemy's retreat route; Gou Chen as the general's star governs war and peace, while Xuan Wu as the thief deity governs enemy intelligence. Each divination method is paired with specific conditions of stems, branches, deities, and murderous energies, and with rules for judging good or bad fortune, forming a decision chain of "condition–action–result."
From a modern perspective, this system is essentially the ancients' transformation of military decision-making problems under uncertainty into an operable symbolic calculation model. Its value lies not in metaphysical validation but in the seeds of game theory it contains: the analysis of first-mover advantage between host and guest, and win or loss; the situational assessment of prosperity, decline, imprisonment, and death; and the deduction of benefit and harm through punishment, collision, and mutual suppression—these resonate remarkably with the "intelligence–situation–action" framework of modern decision science.
When the Grand Duke Tai Sui (Year Star) has already passed the month it governs, events belong to the past; if not yet passed, they lie ahead in the coming months. When it exactly coincides with the month it governs, affairs pertain to the present year; if the accompanying spirit presages good fortune, the outcome is auspicious; if evil, difficulties are lamentable. "Jian" means the monthly construct (the dominant branch of the month). If Tai Sui has moved beyond the branch governing the month—for instance, when the governing branch is Yin (Tiger, first month) and Tai Sui has shifted past to Mao (Rabbit)—then matters; belong to the past. If Tai Sui has not yet reached that construct—say, the governing branch is Zi (Rat) and Tai Sui still rides at Hai (Boar)—then portends future affairs.
