Chapter 12 of 13
六壬大全
The so-called "leading from front and following from behind" pattern has two scenarios: If the initial transmission resides before the Day Stem, it is called "leading"; if the final transmission resides after the Day Stem, it is called "following." Encountering this pattern indicates certain promotion in official rank. If the initial transmission resides before the Earthly Branch and the final transmission resides after it, this indicates renovation and relocation of one's home. Both matters are auspicious.
Pattern of Arching Over the Noble (Gong Gui Ge) : For example, on a Geng-Chen day, with Yin adding to You as the initial transmission and Zi adding to Wei as the final transmission, the initial and final transmissions lead and follow from within, enclosing the Geng Stem. The Stem's upper position has Chou as the daytime Noble. Combined with all three transmissions descending to overcome the upper, how could this not correspond to promotion in office? Although in night divination the Tomb Spirit covers the Day, there is no fear, because the middle transmission Wei serves as the Celestial Noble, breaking through the Chou tomb—thus constituting an auspicious lesson.
Pattern of Two Nobles Leading and Following the Heavenly Stem (Liang Gui Yin Cong Tian Gan Ge) : For example, on a Ren-Zi day, the initial transmission Si added to Zi serves as the daytime Noble, and the final transmission Mao added to Xu serves as the nighttime Noble. This too has the Tomb Spirit covering the Day, yet relies on the middle transmission Xu to rush against Chen, so the tomb need not be feared. In all cases matching this example, one will certainly receive support from superiors, or two figures of authority will jointly recommend success. If Chen serves as the Monthly General, this is especially excellent.
Pattern of Initial and Final Transmissions Leading and Following the Earthly Branch (Chu Mo Yin Cong Di Zhi Ge) : For example, on a Ji-Hai day with the initial transmission Si added to Zi and the final transmission Mao added to Xu, it is suitable for renovating and relocating one's home—this is auspicious. Another example: on a Ding-Hai day, although both the day and night Heavenly Generals are White Tiger positioned upon the Branch, one relies on the middle transmission Xu-Serpent to rush against Chen-Tiger, and thus no harm occurs.
Pattern of Day and Night Nobles Prostrating Upon the Stem and Branch, Arching the Year and Life within (Zhou Ye Gui Ren Lin Gan Zhi Shang Gong Qi Nian Ming Zai Nei Zhe) : It is suitable to petition the Noble for matters, and one will certainly achieve success through both Nobles. For example: on a Ding-You day, You adds to Ding and Hai adds to You, with the inquirer's Year and Life in Shen; on a Ding-Si day, Hai adds to Ding and You adds to Si, with the Year and Life in Wu; on a Gui-Hai day, Si adds to Gui and Mao adds to Hai, with the Year and Life in Zi.
Whenever the Stem and Branch form a pincer in the lower layer, this applies only to Jia-Zi, Jia-Chen, Gui-Hai, and Gui-Mao; in the upper layer, only to Geng-Wu, Geng-Xu, Ding-Si, and Ding-You. [Translator's note: This refers to the Heavenly Plate Stem and Branch forming an arching-pincer configuration with the Earthly Plate's lodged palaces.]
Pattern of Two Nobles Arching the Year and Life (Er Gui Gong Nian Ming Ge) : For example, on a Gui-Wei day, with the initial transmission Si added to Zi and the final transmission Mao added to Xu, the inquirer's Annual Star and Life Stems are both in Hai. It is suitable to petition the Noble for success. This is called "The final assists the initial wealth and the initial virtue"—it is also a case of the Noble assisting the Noble.
Pattern of Stem and Branch Arching the Fixed Daily Salary (Gan Zhi Gong Ding Ri Lu Ge) : This applies only to the Fu Yin hexagram. For example, Ding-Si, Ji-Si, and Gui-Hai are all Fu Yin lessons, suitable for divination concerning salary and provisions. Gui-Hai is considered unfavorable because the salary is void.
Pattern of Stem and Branch Arching the Night or Day Noble (Gan Zhi Gong Ye Gui Zhou Gui Ge) : This applies only to Fu Yin lessons. For example, Geng-Wu and Ji-You have Stem and Branch arching the Night Noble; Jia-Zi has the Stem and Branch arching the Daytime Noble. All are suitable for petitioning the Noble to seek resolution of matters.
Pattern of Initial and Middle Transmissions Arching the Earthly Plate Noble (Chu Zhong Gong Di Pan Gui Ren Ge) : For example, on a Geng-Wu day, with the Stem's upper position being Xu and the Branch's upper position being Shen, both the Stem and Branch, together with the initial and middle transmissions, arch the Night Noble. All such cases are suitable for petitioning the Noble to achieve harmonious resolution.
This refers to when the Stem's upper position carries the 旬尾 (Xun's Tail) and the Branch's upper position carries the 旬首 (Xun's Head) . This is called the Pattern of Cyclical Return (Zhou Er Fu Shi Ge) , also known as the Pattern of One Cycle Pervading All (Yi Xun Zhou Bian Ge) . Whenever this appears, divined matters will not be cast away, and all plans will succeed. For examinations, it is suitable to take another's place; for litigation, it is suitable to change courts or departments; for entanglements and ongoing affairs, matters will depart and then return. It is only unfavorable for dissolving or releasing matters. If there is worry or doubt, the matter will remain undecided.
The Stem's upper position carrying the Xun's Tail and the Branch's upper position carrying the Xun's Head occurs only on five days: Yi-Wei, Xin-Chou, Bing-Shen, Ren-Yin, and Wu-Shen. This requires four positions between the Stem and Branch.
The Stem's upper position carrying the Xun's Head and the Branch's upper position carrying the Xun's Tail occurs only on five days: Yi-Chou, Xin-Wei, Bing-Yin, Wu-Yin, and Ren-Shen. All divinations follow the same interpretation as above.
Pattern of the Celestial Heart (Tian Xin Ge) : This occurs when the Year, Month, Day, and Hour are all within the Four Lessons. Whatever is divined will be an extraordinary matter, accomplished on the very day—or matters presented to the celestial court will certainly be achieved. If divining about private or base matters, it conversely becomes a fault.
Pattern of Return (Hui Huan Ge) : This occurs when the Three Transmissions are within the Four Lessons. For example, on a Xin-Hai day, the Stem's upper position is You, and Hai's upper position is Xu, with the Three Transmissions being Xu, You, and Shen. When the Stem and Branch themselves form a Three Harmonies, many of these are Return patterns—the Stem and Branch meet each other, and this cannot be spoken of as incompleteness. For inauspicious matters, the inauspicious outcome is achieved; for auspicious matters, the auspicious outcome is achieved. For all matters, one should only maintain the status quo and not initiate action. If divining illness, the illness will be difficult to dispel; if divining litigation, it will not be resolved. If a woman divines and obtains the Stem added to the Branch, or a man obtains the Branch added to the Stem, divining specifically about marriage is especially accurate.
The Screen-and-Curtain Noble (Lian Mu Guan) refers to: in daytime divination, the Night Noble serves this role; in nighttime divination, the Daytime Noble serves this role. For divination on examinations, specifically look to see this deity resting upon the inquirer's Year and Life Stems, or upon the Day Stem—the examination will certainly result in high placement. When commoners obtain the Screen-and-Curtain Noble, they receive support from retired officials. When those already holding office obtain it, it is an omen of retiring from office.
When the Xun's Head serves as the Screen-and-Curtain Noble and rests upon the Year and Life or Day Stem, this is especially accurate—it occurs only on Yi, Ji, and Xin days.
When Chen or Xu serve as the Xun's Head and rest upon the Year and Life or Day Stem, one will certainly place first in the imperial examinations. This occurs in the Jia-Chen and Jia-Xu Xun periods, twenty days in total.
Pattern of Dipper and Ghost Added to Each Other (Dou Gui Xiang Jia Ge) : Whether Chou adds to Wei or Wei adds to Chou, serving as the Year and Life or Day Stem, one will also place as the top candidate. This is because Chou contains the Dipper (斗) and Wei contains the Ghost (鬼); the two characters "斗" and "鬼" combine to form the character "魁" (meaning "chief" or "top").
Star of the Secondary Top Candidate (Ya Kui Xing) : When the Heavenly Plate's You rests upon the Year and Life or Day Stem, examination divination will certainly bring high placement, because You is the "Secondary Chief" (从魁). All of the above considerations must avoid Void and Death.
Pattern of Virtue Entering the Celestial Gate (De Ru Tian Men Ge) : This occurs when the Day's Virtue is added to Hai and serves as the functional transmission. A scholar divining this will certainly place high. Hai is the Celestial Gate; "Virtue" (德) means "to attain" (得).
Pattern of the True Vermilion Bird (Zhen Zhu Que Ge) : For example, on the six Ji days in years of the Four Seasons, if one uses the Night Noble arranged in reverse, the Vermilion Bird will mount Wu. Divining about the spring examinations, one's essay will align with the examiner's intent and certainly achieve high placement—because the Vermilion Bird governs written documents, generating the Grand Year and also generating the Day Stem. If the True Vermilion Bird overcomes the Grand Year, divining litigation will surely reach the imperial court; this applies specifically to Shen and You years.
Pattern of the Source Expiring and the Root Severed (Yuan Xiao Gen Duan Ge) : For example, on a Gui-Mao day, with the Stem's upper position Mao and the Branch's upper position Si, and the Year and Life in Yin, it is highly suitable for divining examinations. One may place highly, but one fears that without proper care, one will eventually contract consumption.
The Screen-and-Curtain Noble Especially Distinguishes Preference and Aversion: On Jia days, the Wei tomb is disliked as its role; on Geng days, the Chou tomb is disliked. Further: on Jia-Yin days, the void Chou serving this role is disliked; on Geng-Yin days, the void Wei serving this role is disliked; on Bing-Yin and Ding-Mao days, the void Hai serving this role is disliked; on Ji-Mao and Yi-Hai days, the void Shen is disliked; on Ren-Zi and Gui-Chou days, the void Mao is disliked; on Ren-Yin and Gui-Mao days, the void Si is disliked. On the six Xin days, Wu overcoming it is disliked; and on Xin-Hai days, the void Yin serving this role is disliked. Voidness is especially severe—it means the examiner will set one's paper aside without reading it, rendering the effort all in vain.
For divination on military examinations: Si serves as the bow and crossbow, Shen as the arrow. If Shen is added to Wu, the arrow will certainly strike the red center of the target. If Shen is added to Yin, Shen, Si, or Hai, this is the "four-petal flower," and one uses the number of the lesson that serves as the functional transmission to determine the number of arrows hitting. The Four Tombs indicate falling off the target.
Whenever one divines about assuming a post, if the Day's Ghost mounting the White Tiger is added to the Day Stem or the Year and Life, this is called the Official-Pressing Envoy (Cui Guan Shi Zhe) . Even for a distant post, one will certainly be urgently pressed to set out. If the Official-Pressing Envoy is void, it is an empty message, or one may be dismissed or dispatched elsewhere.
Official-Pressing Talisman (Cui Guan Fu) : When the Official Star rests upon the Day Stem, Year, or Life, and the gods on the Three Transmissions generate the Official Star—this is the pattern.
Example of Gracious Lord Recommendation (En Zhu Ju Jian Li) : When the transmissions, Year, or Day and Chen positions have the Father-Mother token, this is the case. It also represents a place of emolument. If the Long Life token serves as the Noble, this likewise applies. For example, on Yi days, the Daytime Noble serving as Father-Mother; on Ji days, the Night Noble serving as Long Life. Exception: on Yi-Mao days the Daytime Noble is void, and on Ji-Mao days the Night Noble is void—these are not used.
Killing Star of Returning to the Root in the Four Seasons (Si Shi Fan Ben Sha) : This makes assuming a post extremely delayed. The Returning-to-the-Root Killing is: in Spring, obtaining the Metal Bureau; in Summer, the Water Bureau; in Autumn, the Fire Bureau; in Winter, the Earth Bureau. If one divines about assuming a post and obtains the Fan Yin hexagram, one will often fail to complete the term of office.
Pattern of the Six Yang (Liu Yang Ge) : This refers to when the Stem and Branch's Four Lessons and Three Transmissions all occupy the Six Yang positions. All divinations favor public affairs and are unfavorable for private schemes. For example, on a Geng-Zi day: the first lesson is Xu added to Geng, the second is Zi added to Xu, the third is Yin added to Zi, and the fourth is Chen added to Yin serving as the initial transmission; the middle transmission is Wu added to Chen; the final transmission is Shen added to Wu. This hexagram is named Ascending the Three Heavens (Deng San Tian) —suitable for divining matters of the celestial court, with the imagery of moving upward to reach the exalted. If a noble person divines this, one slightly fears the initial and middle voidness diminishes its power; if a common person divines it, relying on the initial and middle voids actually saves effort—yet one cannot avoid public affairs, and the matter's reasoning will be clear and evident.
Pattern of Contrarian Violence (Bei Li Ge) , also named Inverting and Dragging the Snake (Dao Ba She) : For example, on a Jia-Wu day, with the Stem's upper position being Zi, although the Four Lessons and Three Transmissions all reside in Six Yang positions, because the Three Transmissions retreat in sequence, the matter will encounter obstruction and difficulty. Additionally, the initial transmission Xu-Wealth draws one into the middle and final transmissions' Ghost realm. In all divinations, matters will be arduous, and public affairs cannot be avoided.
Pattern of the Five Yang (Wu Yang Ge) : When the lessons and transmissions rest upon five Yang positions, and the inquirer's Year and Life fill the remaining position, this is also called Six Yang. Matters are governed by openness and clarity—favorable for public affairs, unfavorable for private.
Pattern of the Six Yin (Liu Yin Ge) : This refers to when the lessons and transmissions all reside in the Six Yin positions. All divinations favor hidden schemes and private dealings and are unfavorable for public exposure—moreover, complete confusion results. If one passes from daytime to nighttime transmissions, the confusion becomes even deeper. For example, on a Ji-Mao day: the first lesson is You added to Si; the second lesson is Hai added to You serving as the initial transmission; the third is Si added to Mao; the fourth is Wei added to Si, with the middle transmission Chou added to Hai and the final transmission Mao added to Chou. This lesson is named Mist and Obscurity (Ming Meng) —whatever is divined will surely be a matter of hidden schemes, adultery, and treachery. Additionally, the Heavenly Generals include Empress of Heaven, Flying Serpent, Six Harmonies, and Dark Warrior; both the Stem and Branch's upper positions carry the Robbing Qi. It is also a Pellet-Shooting lesson (Tan She) whose functional transmission sits in the void position—extremely exhausting and inexpressible. Divining illness, death is certain; seeking hopes, all becomes loss and dissipation.
Pattern of the Five Yin (Wu Yin Ge) : When the lessons and transmissions number only five Yin, and the inquirer's Year and Life fill the remaining position, all divinations favor the private over the public, the petty person over the noble person.
Pattern of the Source Expiring and the Root Severed (Yuan Xiao Gen Duan Ge) : For example, on Gui-Mao, Gui-Wei, and Gui-Si days, with the Stem's upper position Mao, the lessons and transmissions all reside in the Five Yin positions. Moreover, each lower position generates its upper deity, draining away progressively. Divining illness, one falls ill from lack of care—how could this not be critically perilous? All divinations result in loss and consumption; this method is marvelously accurate.
Another example: on a Xin-Mao day, with the Stem's upper position Zi, from the Stem to the Branch and through the initial, middle, and final transmissions, each lower deity progressively generates its upper deity—everything is stolen and drained. Although not all five Yin positions are complete, the principle is identical. Excepting illness divination, all other matters face unavoidable loss and gradual depletion.
When the Day's Salary Deity (Lu Shen) , which is also the Day's Prosperous Deity (Wang Shen) , rests upon the Stem's upper position, one absolutely must not abandon it to scheme other actions. For example, on an Yi-Mao day, the Stem's upper position is Mao—fortunately, one rides the Day's prosperous salary. Why not keep to this? Instead, one abandons it to pursue the initial transmission's Wealth, and the middle and final transmissions' Generation—not realizing these are all within the Xun's Voidness. Since the stem's void is encountered, one inevitably struggles and drifts, then returns to the Stem's upper position to embrace both salary and prosperity. Truly this fulfills the saying, "After going everywhere back and forth, nothing compares to staying here." Likewise, Yi-You and Yi-Hai days with Stem above Mao; Gui-Si and Gui-Chou with Stem above Zi; Xin-Mao, Xin-Chou, and Xin-You with Stem above You; Ji-Hai, Ji-You, and Ji-Si with Stem above Wu—although not matching the prosperity of Ji Earth, they may still be used.
Another example: on a Xin-Si day, although the Stem's upper position You serves as the Day's prosperous salary, it happens to be in Xun Voidness. Since both salary and prosperity are void, what one gains will certainly not compensate for what one spends. It is, on the contrary, unsuitable to sit and use it; inevitably one abandons the salary and turns to the Three Transmissions' Wealth, or changes profession and pursuits—and thus prosperity arrives. Another example: on a Gui-Hai day, although the Stem's upper position carries Zi as the Day's prosperous salary, it is likewise within Xun Voidness. Inevitably one abandons the salary and turns to the initial transmission Xu—but this encounters the Day's Ghost riding the White Tiger. Then, unavoidably, one pushes forward to the middle transmission You—again encountering the Decay Qi. Then sitting in the Ghost realm, one continues to the final transmission Shen, where at last one meets the Day's Long Life. In every case matching this lesson, one cannot avoid abandoning the void salary and walking through difficulty; only by advancing one more step does one finally attain satisfaction. Ding-Hai day with Stem above Wu, and Yi-Si day with Stem above Mao, are the same. Exception: on Yi-Wei day with Stem above Mao, because this is the salary of the Closed Mouth that cannot be kept, one turns to the initial transmission—but unfortunately this is the Mao-Star (Mao Xing) wealth that cannot enter. Inevitably, the middle transmission returns to the Stem's upper position again to receive its prosperous salary, but it cannot be kept; and so reaching the final transmission, one abandons the salary and returns to the final transmission upon the Branch position, receiving the Stem's tomb realm. From this divination, one sees dependence upon others for food, an unsettled mind, ending only in hardship within one's own home.
Pattern of the Salary Seized by the Dark Warrior (Lu Bei Yuan Duo Ge) : For example, on a Xin-Mao day, the Stem's upper position You serves as the Day's prosperous salary, but because in daytime it rides the Dark Warrior and at night it rides the Tiger, it cannot be kept. Inevitably one turns to the initial transmission Chou—yet this is the Day's tomb; the middle transmission Zi is again Draining Qi; and the final transmission Ding-Hai rides the Tiger and distantly overcomes the Day Stem. Another example: Xin-Wei day, the Stem above You rides the Tiger at night.
When the Day Stem's Salary Deity is added upon the Branch (Chen) , in all divinations one will be unable to hold oneself with dignity, suffering humiliation and bending before others. If divining about an appointment, this signifies authority improperly held, or a title granted from afar. Alternatively, it is proper to draw salary from the household estate—or to transfer one's own official salary to one's sons. Such divinations are especially accurate. Example: on a Jia-Zi day, Yin adds to Zi; on an Yi-Chou day, Mao adds to Chou, and the like.
Salary En-TOMbed, Overcome, or Drained by the Branch (Lu Bei Zhi Mu Ke Tuo) : Additionally, when the Day Stem's salary is added to the Branch but the Branch entombs the salary, or overcomes it, one will lose one's salary because of constructing or roofing a house. If the Branch drains the salary deity, one will use the salary to pay off debts incurred from construction. Example: on a Xin-Chou day, You adds to Chou—this is the salary being entombed. On an Yi-You day, Mao adds to You—this is the salary being overcome by the house. On an Yi-Si day, Mao adds to Si—this is the salary being drained.
Pattern of Fleeing Danger and Seeking Life (Bi Nan Tao Sheng Ge) : For example, on a Jia-Zi day, Xu adds to Zi as the initial transmission—although it is the Day's Wealth, it is within the Xun's void; the middle transmission Shen Metal is the Day's Ghost; the final transmission Wu Fire serves as the Day's Draining Qi. Since the Three Transmissions offer no benefit, one inevitably resorts to the Stem's upper position Zi Water to receive generation—this answers the saying of fleeing danger and seeking life. Other days: Ding-Mao with Stem above Hai; Yi-Hai with Stem above You; Wu-Yin with Stem above Shen; Geng-Xu with Stem above Wu; Xin-Wei with Stem above Chou; Wu-Wu with Stem above Chen; Ji-Si with Stem above You; Xin-You with Stem above Hai; Ren-Shen with Stem above Yin; Geng-Chen with Stem above Zi.
Another example: on a Jia-Zi day, Chen adds to Yin as the initial transmission—although it is the Day's Wealth, unfortunately both day and night Heavenly Generals are the Six Harmonies; the Wealth is clamped and overcome from above and below, ultimately unattainable. The middle transmission Wu Fire is the Day's Draining Qi; the final transmission Shen Metal is again the Day's Ghost. Inevitably, the Day Stem resorts to the Zi position on the Branch to receive generation. Another example: on a Geng-Zi day, Zi adds to Shen— this is the Branch deity coming to the door to drain the Stem. Additionally, the Three Transmissions form the Water Bureau, all acting as Draining Qi, and the day and night Heavenly Generals—Serpent, Dragon, and Dark Warrior—are all water beasts, further stirring up the water to eat away Geng Metal. Yet upon careful inspection, the Heavenly Plate's Shen Metal sits upon Chen Earth and receives generation, and Zi Water sits upon Shen Metal and receives Long Life—how could it devour the metal of the heavenly Shen? This too serves as fleeing danger and seeking life.
Pattern of Fleeing Danger and Seeking Life but Ultimately Unable to Escape (Bi Nan Tao Sheng Er Zhong Bu Neng Tao Sheng Zhe) : For example, on a Ding-Hai day, with Stem above Xu and using night divination of the Mao-Star, the Three Transmissions are Wu, Xu, and Yin. One first abandons the Stem's upper tomb, then turns to the initial transmission's Salary—but it is within the Xun's void. Inevitably one abandons the void salary and returns to the Stem's upper position of the middle transmission Xu tomb; ultimately one cannot receive it, and after prolonged hardship one again turns to the final transmission's Long Life—but it meets the White Tiger, so one can only remain at home, receiving the Long Life of fright and peril.
Pattern of Receiving Wealth by Fleeing Danger and Seeking Life (Bi Nan Tao Sheng De Cai Ge) : For example, on a Ren-Wu day, Chen adds to Hai as the initial transmission—it is the Tomb Spirit covering the Day serving as functional. The Three Transmissions are Chen, You, and Yin. Inevitably one abandons the tomb and turns to the middle transmission You Metal for generation—but this too is within Xun Voidness; then one turns again to the final transmission Yin Wood—which is Draining Qi. After abandoning all Three Transmissions, the Ren Stem adds to Wu and takes wealth. Another example: on a Bing-Yin day, Yin adds to Bing, and Shen-Wealth adds to Hai riding the Dark Warrior; the Three Transmissions are Hai, Shen, Si.
Pattern of Abandoning Benefit to Embrace Loss (She Yi Jiu Sun Ge) , also named Not Accepting Happiness and Virtue (Bu Shou Fu De) : For example, on a Ren-Yin day, one does not embrace the Stem's upper Shen Metal as Long Life, but rather willingly lets the Ren Stem add to Yin Wood and receive drain.
Pattern Where Neither Abandoning Nor Embracing Works (She Jiu Jie Bu Ke Ge) : For example, Yi-You day with Stem above Hai; Xin-Chou day with Stem above Wei. Only on Geng-Zi day is the Stem above Chen void, and on Geng-Wu day is Stem above Xu void.
Pattern of the Tomb Serving as the Sun (Mu Zuo Tai Yang Ge) : This refers to the Tomb Spirit covering the Day yet serving as the Sun—in the midst of difficulty, one receives a superior's assistance. There are five grades: 1. Seeking generation from the Stem's upper position; 2. Seeking generation from the Branch's upper position; 3. The Day Stem sitting on the Earthly Plate's generation; 4. The Life Star riding the Ding and sitting upon the Earthly Plate's Long Life; 5. The Day Stem descending toward the Wealth realm.
This refers to in the Wheel-Carving Lesson (Zhuo Lun Ke) , when Ming (Mao) is void—hence the name: rotten wood cannot be carved. Whenever this pattern appears, one should change one's specialty and profession, and engage in other business. On Geng-Xu days, Mao adds to Shen; and on Xin-Hai days, Mao adds to Xin—these two are the most accurate. Additionally, on Gui-Chou days, Mao adds to Shen serves as the functional transmission.
Pattern of the Axe and Hatchet Being Unfavorable (Fu Jin Bu Li Ge) : For example, on a Ding-Chou day, Mao adds to Shen as the functional transmission, but with Shen and You void, Mao Wood rests upon void ground. This does not fit the "rotten wood cannot be carved" category—rather, all schemes meet with no success.
For example, on a Ren-Chen day: Xu adds to Wei as the initial transmission, Chou adds to Xu as the middle transmission, Chen adds to Chou as the final transmission. The Three Transmissions—Xu, Chou, Chen—are all Day Ghosts, truly inauspicious. Yet one fails to realize that the Stem's upper position already holds Yin Wood, capable of resisting the Earth of all three transmissions. This restrains the Ghost bandits so they cannot harm; moreover, this is an Artemisia-Arrow (Hao Shi) lesson, selecting comparison for the functional transmission, seated in a void position—the Ghost's power is extremely light. Whatever is divined, one unavoidably first encounters alarms and perils, yet in the end there is nothing to fear. It only indicates that someone certainly schemes against you but ultimately cannot bring harm. If using the Night Noble, the initial transmission rides the White Tiger and remains somewhat fearsome; if using the Daytime Noble, there is no fear whatsoever. The Yin Wood must not be considered as Draining Qi—truly, it is a saving deity.
Another example: Ren-Xu day with Stem above Yin; Bing-Zi, Bing-Shen, and Bing-Chen days with Stem above Chou—all are this case. Ji-Hai day with Stem above Shen and using the Night Noble—one will certainly obtain the strength of a person of rank.
Family Ghost Seizing Family Members (Jia Gui Qu Jia Ren) : For example, on a Ji-Chou day, Stem above Shen and Branch above Yin serve as functional; the Three Transmissions are Yin, Mao, and Chen. If using the Night Noble, one will certainly receive rescue from someone of rank. Since the Branch's Yin Wood serves as the functional, the middle and final transmissions both return to the Wood realm. In all cases where the Branch position has a Ghost that leads into the Ghost realm, speak thus. Examples: Bing-Shen day with Stem above Chou; Bing-Yin day with Stem above Chen.
Pattern of Family Members Resolving Catastrophe (Jia Ren Jie Huo Ge) : For example, on a Gui-Hai day, Chen adds to Gui as the functional; the Three Transmissions, Chen, Wei, and Xu, are all Earth deities, all coming to harm the Stem. Moreover, the night Heavenly Generals are all Serpent, Hook, and Tiger—truly inauspicious. Yet one fails to realize that the Branch's upper position Yin Wood can resist the Ghosts, so no inauspicious result follows. This pattern necessarily means someone within the household will resolve the disaster.
Pattern of Drawing the Ghost to Bring About Generation (Yin Gui Wei Sheng Ge) : This refers to the initial transmission being the Day Ghost, yet it generates the final transmission which then nurtures the Day Stem. For example, on a Bing-Zi day, Stem above Zi serves as the initial transmission; although it is a Ghost, it generates the final transmission Yin Wood as the Long Life of Bing Fire. On the contrary, one does not fear the Stem's upper Zi Water—also relying on the house position's Wei Earth as salvation. On Bing-Wu days, there is likewise Chou Earth as salvation.
Pattern of Transmitting the Ghost to Bring About Generation (Chuan Gui Wei Sheng Ge) : The Three Transmissions are all Day Ghosts, yet on the contrary they generate the deity on the Stem's upper position, which in turn nurtures the Day Stem. For example, on a Geng-Wu day, the Stem's upper position is Chen; the Three Transmissions—Xu, Wu, Yin—form a Fire Bureau. Although they all harm the Day Stem, unexpectedly the Three Transmissions in turn generate the stem's upper Chen Earth, which nourishes Geng Metal. Another example: Gui-Si day with Si added to You. If using daytime generals, all are Earth deities overcoming the Day, yet one fails to realize these Earth generals generate the Three Transmissions' Metal Bureau, and the Metal Bureau generates the Stem—thus the inauspicious returns to auspicious.
Pattern of the Noble-Virtue Resting upon the Body, Eliminating All Ten Thousand Calamities (Gui De Lin Shen Xiao Chu Wan Huo Ge) : For example, on Yi-Chou and Yi-Si days, You adds to Si as the initial transmission; the Three Transmissions form a Metal Bureau all coming to harm the Yi Stem. If using the Daytime Noble, the inauspicious is unstoppable; but if using the Night Noble, it turns auspicious. This is because the initial transmission's You Metal is overcome from above by the Serpent, wounded from below by Si Fire, and further entombed by the middle transmission Chou Earth, and overcome by the final transmission Si Fire—altogether powerless to overcome the Stem. Even with the Stem's upper position carrying Shen Metal—which serves as both Noble and the Day's Virtue resting upon the body—it can subdue all offending forces.
Pattern of Heavenly General Serving as the Saving Deity (Tian Jiang Wei Jiu Shen Ge) : For example, on a Xin-Si day, Wu adds to Xin as the functional; the Three Transmissions form a Fire Bureau all attacking the Stem—truly inauspicious. Yet if one observes the Heavenly Generals, both day and night include the Noble, Constant, and Hook Earth deities, which steal the Fire's energy and generate the Day Stem. So one may be spared the calamity.
Pattern of Draining Qi Serving as Salvation (Tuo Qi Wei Jiu Ge) : For example, on a Ren-Zi day, Wei adds to Mao as the functional; the Three Transmissions form a Wood Bureau all draining the Stem. This case has no Day Ghost involved; yet the Three Transmissions' Wood Bureau must never be spoken of as mere Draining Qi. If using the night general, because the Three Transmissions' Heavenly Generals—both Hook and Constant and the Noble Earth deities—all come to harm the Ren Stem, one paradoxically relies on the Three Transmissions' Wood Bureau to overcome those Earth generals. How could this not correspond to the present pattern?
Pattern of the Fox Borrowing the Tiger's Majesty (Hu Jia Hu Wei Yi) : For example, on a Ding-Wei day, the Stem's upper position is Zi. Ding Fire truly fears Zi Water's control, but it relies instead on the Branch's Earth element to restrain that Zi Water. The Water dares not harm the Ding Stem. The Ding Fire is likened to the fox, and Wei Earth to the tiger, hence the name "fox borrowing the tiger's majesty." For all divinations, schemes and actions are absolutely forbidden—for if one acts and departs from Wei Earth, the Zi Water will trace one's movements and harm the Ding Fire.
Another example: Xin-Hai day with the Stem's upper position Hai. Both the day Tiger and night Dark Warrior ride the Draining Qi; one relies especially on Hai Water seated upon Xu Earth—it still fears Xu Earth and will not completely drain Xin Metal. Still, one should not act.
For example, on a Wu-Zi day, the Stem's upper position is Wu; the Three Transmissions—Yin, Mao, Chen—are all Day Ghosts. During a Spring divination, Wood is at its height and indeed deserves fear. Yet one fails to realize that Wood, reaching its spring flourishing, covets its own glory and has no intention to overcome Earth; thus Wu Earth need not fear the Wood's control. Although harmless in a spring divination, be warned: by summer and autumn the calamity will strike. If there is a misfortune, one should cut it off immediately to avoid later consequences.
For other cases where the Three Transmissions contain only Day Ghosts, analyze each according to the seasonal commands.
Three Harmonies forming a Ghost is also interpreted as above.
For example, on a Wu-Shen day, Stem above Chou; the Three Transmissions—Zi, Shen, Chen—are all the Day's Wealth. Moreover, both day and night Heavenly Generals are water beasts, and in the Autumn and Winter months when Water is generating and flourishing, divining about seeking wealth yields none at all. If one strives to take this wealth, beware of spending one's own money instead—because the Water is selfishly indulging in its own generativity and cannot serve as your wealth. Only when the self's body is prosperous, in a month when the Wealth's energy has slightly declined, can one actually take the wealth.
Pattern of Advancing in a Continuous File as Wealth (Jin Tui Lian Ru Wei Cai Ge) : This is likened to fish in a net. In seeking wealth, one should not sit upon the Wealth's tomb, and one equally avoids the Wealth added to the Ghost's tomb.
Pattern of the Wealth Deity Being Void (Cai Shen Kong Wang Ge) : In seeking wealth, one instead spends one's own resources—because the wealth that was at hand is already empty; how could wealth yet to come be obtained? For example, on a Xin-Hai day, Stem above Yin and Branch above Mao—both wealths are void. The same on Geng-Xu day.
This refers to the Day Stem generating its upper deity, and that upper deity in turn generating the Heavenly General—hence the name Drain Upon Drain (Tuo Shang Tuo) . All divinations suffer thorough depletion and possess much emptiness, deception, and unreliability.
For example, on the six Geng days, Stem above Zi; in night divination the upper position rides the Azure Dragon. This means Geng Stem generates its upper deity Zi Water, and Zi Water in turn generates the Azure Dragon's Wood general. Moreover, the Three Transmissions are all Water Bureau, all conspiring to rob the Day. How could divinations not encounter deception? Among these, on Geng-Zi day, Zi adds to Geng—the Branch comes to the door to drain the Stem; the Three Transmissions also drain it, and the day and night generals alike are Serpent, Dragon, and Dark Warrior—everything suffers theft and drain. Yet upon close inspection, the Geng is seated on the Heavenly Plate above Chen Earth and receives generation, while Zi Water sits upon Shen Metal and receives the Long Life; ultimately it does not drain away completely. This point cannot go unobserved.
Six Jia days with Stem above Si: in daytime divination, the upper position rides the Tai Chang. Six Yi days with Stem above Wu: in daytime divination, the upper position rides the Sky Void (Tian Kong). Six Ding days with Stem above Chou: in daytime divination, the upper position rides Tai Yin.
Pattern of Unsupported Drain and Attrition (Wu Yi Tuo Hao Ge) : This applies only to the Deng-Yin?—rather, to the Fan Yin on a Ding-Wei day: in daytime divination, the Stem generates Chou; Chou generates the General. One Fire confronts nine Earths—if one anxiety appears, another is certain to follow; if only one matter manifests, another category will arrive, and a great disaster is bound to come. Six Ji days with Stem above You: in night divination, the upper position rides Empress of Heaven.
Pattern of Drain and Theft (Tuo Dao Ge) : This is the pattern where the Stem's upper position encounters the Draining Qi and the Heavenly General acts as Dark Warrior. Six Xin days with Stem above Hai: in night divination, the upper position rides Dark Warrior. Six Ren days with Stem above Yin: in daytime divination, one rides Dark Warrior. Six Gui days with Stem above Yin: in daytime divination, the upper position rides Dark Warrior.
Exception: On Jia-Wu days, Wu adds to Jia; the Three Transmissions form a Fire Bureau which, together with the Branch, robs the Stem—the deception is even more severe. Among them, Xin-Hai day with Stem above Hai is especially detestable: because both the Stem and Branch upper positions cause drain, the initial tomb itself sits in a drained position, the middle and final are void, and both day Tiger and night Dark Warrior appear upon the Day—the inauspicious signs are fully visible.
This refers to the upper position carrying the Xun's Void and riding the Sky Void (Tian Kong) general—all divinations consist of pointing at emptiness and speaking emptiness, entirely without real substance. For example, on a Jia-Shen day, Stem above Wei; in daytime divination, the upper position rides Sky Void. Other days where the Day's upper position is void and also rides the Sky Void follow the same interpretation.
Pattern of Drain and Void (Tuo Kong Ge) : When the Stem's upper position carries the object of drain and rides the Sky Void, it is also named the Drain-Void Deity (Tuo Kong Shen) . All divinations generate from nothing—they are entirely drain and emptiness, with no real foundation and unworthy of belief. For example, on a Xin-Mao day, Stem above Zi; daytime divination, the upper position rides Sky Void; the initial transmission is also a Distant-Overcoming lesson; middle and final transmissions are both void. Every divination is thoroughly drained and voided. Six Xin days with Stem above Zi: daytime divination rides the void. Six Yi days with Stem above Wu: daytime divination rides the void.
In general, whatever distant-overcoming lessons use as functional—if it is void, sits in the void position, or rides the Sky Void general—all divinations are emptied of substance and truth.
For example, on a Ren-Zi day, Stem above Zi; the Three Transmissions—Yin, Mao, Chen—are all void. Since advancing forward is met with three voids, one should withdraw. Draw back one's head and shrink one's body, returning to the Stem-Branch upper positions Zi and Chou for harmony—then one may gain instead. Thus Ren Water will not be entirely drained by the transmitted Wood; one can protect the whole body and keep harm distant. It is unfavorable to entrust matters to others.
Another example: on a Jia-Wu day, Stem above Mao; the Three Transmissions—Chen, Si, Wu—are also all void. One should retreat. So Jia Wood will not be thoroughly drained by the transmitted Fire—but unfortunately, both Stem and Branch clamp the draining energy from front and back; all drains through voidness without end. Yet, if Chou serves as the Year or Life, only then is retreat suitable, in order to approach the Salary.
Pattern of Drain and Void (Tuo Kong Ge) : For example, on a Gui-Chou day, Stem above Yin, itself void; even more so when Yin-Mao-Chen form the Three Transmissions, causing Gui Water to generate this drain-void. Even a thousand pieces of gold would not suffice to fill the drain. If daytime divination has the Dark Warrior riding upon the Stem, it is even worse—litigation proves costly yet unjust, illness indicates severe depletion and deficiency; there is ultimately no retreat possible.
When a retreating transmission sequence encounters complete voidness, this is named Treading on Voidness (Ta Jiao Kong Wang) . When the rear steps are empty, one should advance rather than retreat. For example, on a Wu-Shen day, Stem above Chen; the Three Transmissions—Mao, Yin, Chou—are all Day Ghosts. Fortunately they are void ghosts, and so one can truly escape disaster and avoid danger. The only prohibition is keeping to the old path—for the Stem's upper position carries the tomb. So one should instead press beyond the Three Transmissions, taking one step forward—there the Salary Deity is met.
This pattern, however, is unfavorable for those who already hold office—for the officer line is void.
Pattern of Seeking Death (Xun Si Ge) : For example, on a Bing-Wu day, Stem above Chen; Three Transmissions, Mao, Yin, and Chou, though they would generate the Day, are all void. If divining illness, this is the pattern of seeking death. If inquiring after a parent's illness, it is critical; if after a child's disease, there is no fear. Litigation or divination proves one's case wrong. On an Yi-Mao day, Stem above Mao likewise approximates the Seeking Death pattern.
In all the above examples, it is as if three trap pits lie behind one—how could one retreat? In retreat, foot falls upon the void, and the body sinks into the trap. All divinations call for pressing forward with urgency.
Pattern of Treading on Voidness (Ta Jiao Kong Wang Ge) : Yet this pattern is unfavorable for advancing onward—divined matters produce only empty noise and no achievement. For example, on a Jia-Zi day, Xu is added to Zi as the initial transmission—this is void within the current Xun; Shen added to Xu as the middle transmission—void within the following Xun; Wu added to Shen as the final transmission—void within the Xun after that. Thus from the start and continuously afterward there is no real substance and no accomplishment.
When the Day Stem's Fetal Deity (Tai Shen) functions as the Day's Wife-Wealth, and also encounters the month's Generating Qi (Sheng Qi) , divination on the wife will certainly show pregnancy. For example, on a Ren-Yin day, Stem above Wu, in the seventh month, Wu adds to Hai as the functional. Meng Water has its Fetal position at Wu; this also serves as the Day's Wife-Wealth; and in the seventh month the Generating Qi dwells at Wu—therefore the wife (of the inquirer) "must be pregnant; there is no doubt." In all five Ren days where the Stem upper position is Wu, divination in the seventh month carries the same result. Six Geng and six Xin days with Stem above Mao and fourth-month divination: in all these, the reading is likewise. Six Wu and six Ji days with Stem above Zi: first-month divination, likewise, presages happy pregnancy news. For Wu-Ji Earth-stem days, the fetal place also lies at Zi.
"Fetal Deity of the Branch" serving as the month's Generating Qi: confirmation—not requiring it to be the Day's Wealth—brings about a confirmed pregnancy in the wife when this fetal deity overlaps the wife's annual position or her life hold. Its resting on the Branch position gives identical results. If the wife-wealth deity acts as Generating Qi, even where not the fetal deity, the divination of the husband indicates expectations of offspring alike.
Pattern of Injury to Pregnancy (Sun Tai Ge) : Example: on a Ren-Chen day, Stem above Wu as the functional, with seventh-month divination: though wife-wealth acts as the fetus-deity resting upon Generating Qi,the pregnancy will later be lost, because Wu is a void deity.
Pattern of Concubine Pregnancy (Qie Yun Ge) : Such as on Xin-Gui-Si day—the Fetal Deity acting as Generating Qi indicates no usual biological union and that wife, younger sister, or concubine will find herself pregnant. Speaking more closely: an official observed rule all this—they noted: 'If Sun-Wife usually pregnant months or so' and accordingly tested. For the last item brought by partial read-outs: Every Yin-Captain day has a fetal run pointed toward You; the other signs for noting some act also being generative-the pregnancy of likely any feta appear through exact months.
