六壬大全
Volume 6 of the Complete Compendium of Liu Ren: Lunar Mansions, Degrees, and Territorial Divisions.
Beginning from the day of Beginning of Spring (Li Chun), the calculation starts from the first degree of the Xu Mansion. The degree allocation of the twenty-eight lunar mansions is as follows:
| Mansion | Degrees | Mansion | Degrees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xu (Emptiness) | 8 | Wei (Danger) | 15 |
| Shi (Room) | 17 | Bi (Wall) | 9 |
| Kui (Legs) | 17 | Lou (Tether) | 11 |
| Wei (Stomach) | 15 | Mao (Pleiades) | 10 |
| Bi (Net) | 15 | Shen (Triaster, with Zi attached) | 9 |
| Jing (Well) | 30 | Gui (Ghost) | 2 |
| Liu (Willow) | 12 | Xing (Star) | 5 |
| Zhang (Extended Net) | 17 | Yi (Wings) | 19 |
| Zhen (Chariot) | 17 | Jiao (Horn) | 12 |
| Kang (Neck) | 8 | Di (Root) | 15 |
| Fang (Room) | 5 | Xin (Heart) | 6 |
| Wei (Tail) | 17 | Ji (Winnowing Basket) | 9 |
| Dou (Dipper) | 22 | Niu (Ox) | 6 |
| Nü (Girl) | 10 |
The above totals three hundred and thirty-eight degrees. Each mansion has one initial degree (chudu). Since the Zi Mansion is attached to the Shen Mansion, there are effectively twenty-seven mansions, making up twenty-seven initial degrees. Adding these to the three hundred and thirty-eight main degrees gives exactly the full celestial circle of three hundred and sixty-five degrees.
The method for calculating the initial degree has varied across different calendar systems throughout history. Generally speaking, the initial degree is counted as one degree. Ancient almanacs state: "Each degree is divided into thirty-two parts; the initial degree ends exactly at thirty-two parts, and only from part thirty-three does the first degree begin, with the second, third degrees and so on following in sequence." The Almanac states: "The celestial circle is three hundred and sixty-five degrees plus one-quarter of a degree." This means that each degree is divided into thirty-two parts, then divided into four equal portions, each portion being eight parts. One-quarter of a degree is thus eight parts of the thirty-third degree. Therefore, the celestial circle equals three hundred and sixty-five degrees plus eight parts. The sun travels slightly more than one degree per day, completing the full circuit of three hundred and sixty-five degrees plus eight parts in one year.
Table of the Sun's Transit Through the Palaces:

| Eight days before Pure Brightness | Xu | Initial degree of Kui Mansion | 33 days full |
| Six days before Beginning of Summer | You | 3rd degree of Wei Mansion | 31 days full |
| Five days before Grain in Ear | Shen | 6th degree of Bi Mansion | 30 days full |
| Five days before Slight Heat | Wei | 8th degree of Jing Mansion | 30 days full |

The current allocation of provinces and commanderies by the Imperial Observatory (Qintian Jian) is largely consistent with what is recorded in the Book of Tang. Only the Zheng Division presents a doubt: Zheng was originally land within the Royal Domain of Zhou, and its territories were intermingled with the Zhou division's prefectures and counties, so the boundary areas should rightfully be shared in divination. Currently, the Zheng Division includes Mengzhou, Yingzhou, Guangzhou and Huangzhou; of these, Mengzhou originally belonged to the Zhou Division. In former times, the Zhou dynasty granted this land to the State of Zheng—this claim has some basis. However, Huangzhou is the territory of the ancient Huang State, currently within the jurisdiction of Guangzhou, rather than being part of Huangzhou's boundary. The boundary between Zhou and Zheng does not extend south to the Yangtze River; everything south of the Yangtze belongs to the Chu Division, which should be carefully distinguished today.
Furthermore, according to the Jin dynasty's Astronomical Treatise, Bingzhou was designated as the Wei Division, Yizhou as the Jin Division, Yanzhou as the Zheng Division, Yuzhou as the Song Division, and Xuzhou as the Lu Division. Based on the Tang and Jin allocations for commanderies, Bingzhou is the Jin Division, Yizhou is the territory of Liangzhou under the Qin Division, Yanzhou is the land of the State of Lu, and Zheng and Zhou both belong to the territory of Yuzhou. Currently, the Zhou Division covers the Three Rivers (Sanhe), so it is clear that the Zheng Division corresponds to Yuzhou. Although Song straddles the territories of both Xu and Yu provinces, it holds more land in Xuzhou, so it should be reassigned to Xuzhou. For these five palaces above, I follow the Book of Tang; for the remaining provincial divisions, I follow the Jin dynasty's Astronomical Treatise.

End of Volume 6 of the Complete Compendium of Liu Ren.
Astronomical Territorial Division (Fenye) is an ancient Chinese systematic theory that maps the twenty-eight lunar mansions along the celestial equator belt to the nine provinces of the terrestrial realm. Its core logic is: Heaven has divisions, Earth has correspondences—the auspicious or inauspicious changes of celestial mansions resonate with fortune or misfortune in corresponding terrestrial regions. Within Liu Ren divination, this system functions pragmatically: when a hexagram reading yields a particular palace, the diviner can use the fenye system to deduce the geographical direction or administrative region of the event in question.
Specifically, this chapter establishes several key principles:
From a modern astronomical and geographical perspective, the twenty-eight-mansion fenye system is essentially an ancient coordinate mapping system, projecting celestial coordinates (the degrees of the twenty-eight mansions) onto the administrative regions of the Earth's surface. Its scientific foundation involves the precession of the equinoxes, which causes a shift between mansions and seasons; the ancients corrected for this through precise calculation of the sun's palace transit.
Notably, this system embodies the ancient Chinese holistic view of space: Heaven, Earth, and humanity do not exist in isolation but resonate within a unified cosmic field. The practical function of fenye functions like a spatial zoning index in a modern Geographic Information System (GIS)—when a particular palace appears in a Liu Ren reading, the diviner uses it to isolate the spatial scope of the event.
Viewed from a modern perspective, the administrative attributions within fenye reflect Ming dynasty administrative geography, and some place names differ from modern ones. However, the "palace—mansion—direction" correspondence structure remains valid. For example: Zi Palace = North = former Qi state territory (modern northern Shandong and southeastern Hebei), Wu Palace = South = former Zhou royal territory (modern Luoyang area in Henan). This directional logic can be converted into modern contexts—for instance, the Zi Palace represents the due-north-by-east direction, and the Wu Palace represents due south.
In practical Liu Ren divination, the fenye system finds value in the following scenarios:
Usage notes: When determining direction, use the diviner's location as the center, unfolding according to the twelve-palace earthly-branch correspondences: Zi = due north, Chou = north by east, Yin = northeast by east, Mao = due east, Chen = southeast by east, Si = southeast by south, Wu = due south, Wei = south by west, Shen = southwest by west, You = due west, Xu = northwest by west, Hai = north by west. Then, combine the specific prefecture-county scope within the fenye to determine the event's spatial landing point.
The deep philosophical foundation of the fenye doctrine is a classical expression of the resonance between Heaven and humanity (Tianren Ganying) and cosmic holography. It treats the entire cosmos as an organic continuum—the mansions above and the mountains, rivers, and commanderies below are not merely symbolic correspondences, but existing in a relationship of sympathetic correspondence. This way of thinking parallels the Western Hermetic principle of "As above, so below," but the Chinese fenye system is far more systematized and operationalized.
From the perspective of modern complexity science, the fenye system can be understood as an ancient spatial-correlation model: it attempts to establish a stable mapping between a "celestial coordinate system" and a "geographical coordinate system," so that changes in one system can predict changes in the other. Although its causal mechanism cannot be verified within a modern scientific framework, as a decision-support framework, it played a role in ancient society similar to modern risk analysis and GIS.
What is most worthy of deeper consideration is that the fenye doctrine embodies the ancients' recognition of spatial non-uniformity: different directions and regions possess different "energetic properties" and "fateful tendencies." This notion resonates in modern geography—different locations have different resource endowments, climatic conditions, and developmental potential. The fenye system simply incorporated this spatial heterogeneity into a cosmological framework for comprehensive explanation.
Transforming the fenye system for modern Liu Ren practice:
| Ancient Function | Modern Transformation |
|---|---|
| Battle direction prediction | Business competition area analysis, market expansion direction assessment |
| Disaster region warnings | Spatial-dimensional risk management |
| Prefecture/commandery fortune telling | Comprehensive evaluation of project location sites |
| Determining person's origin | Analyzing the direction of information/opportunity sources |
| Travel region selection | Directional reference for travel/business trips/relocation |
Methodological Suggestion: Treat fenye as a reference framework for spatial dimension, not a deterministic predictive tool. In divination, the auspiciousness of the hexagram transmissions themselves should lead; fenye serves as auxiliary information to narrow or confirm the spatial scope. In modern practice, one may combine GIS technology, overlaying traditional fenye with modern maps, to create a visualized directional judgment tool.
