The Qian hexagram symbolizes heaven; Zhen symbolizes thunder and the dragon; Kan and Dui govern gloom and darkness; Xun governs the arising of wind. The interaction of Kun and Gen does not indicate rain; when Li fire and the mountain move together, the weather will be clear and warm.
When Li and Kan appear together, it indicates alternating sun and rain; when Dui and Li are stacked, it indicates half-cloudy, half-overcast conditions. If baleful spirits approach the Weiji (Not Yet Across) hexagram, relief will ultimately arrive; the Jiji (Already Across) hexagram, though yin in nature, signifies insufficient rainfall. When Xun enters the Kan palace, wind precedes rain; when Dui approaches the Kun position, drizzle falls steadily. The Xiaoxu (Small Accumulation) hexagram indicates dense clouds but no rain; the Sui (Following) hexagram brings soaking moisture and portends a bountiful harvest year.
When Qian heaven and Kun earth do not interact, nourishing moisture does not descend; when yin and yang unite, one feels gratitude toward the Heavenly Lord. In the eight pure hexagrams, if the fire line moves, or in the wandering soul hexagrams, if the wood line moves, it is like a fiery umbrella spreading across the vast sky. Di huo Mingyi (Earth Fire, Brightness Hiding) indicates dark and overcast weather; Huo lei Shike (Fire Thunder, Biting Through) indicates flashing red lightning. When the Li line carries baleful energy, clearing weather can be determined; when the Vermilion Bird flies high, the same conclusion applies. In the Dayou (Great Possession) hexagram, if not doubled, the sky is clear and airy; in the Tongren (Fellowship) hexagram, if calm, sunlight is gentle and warm. In the Jin (Progress) hexagram, the presence of the dragon line indicates little rain; in the Tun (Difficulty at the Beginning) hexagram, without thunder balefulness, only thick clouds form.
The Azure Dragon moving in the Zeshan Xian (Lake Mountain, Influence) hexagram is greatly auspicious; the White Tiger intersecting the Tianshui Song (Heaven Water, Conflict) hexagram accomplishes nothing. When Gou Chen (Central Earth) carries earth and holds the World line, even if clouds are dense, farming will not benefit. When the Xuan Wu water line moves vigorously, torrential rain falls; the Azure Dragon, with its wood virtue, brings boundless grace and nourishment. When thunder balefulness and the Kan palace lines move together, torrential rain pours and thunderbolts crash relentlessly.
Most auspicious are the Zi (Rat) and Chen (Dragon) branches residing in the Kan position; most disliked are the Xu (Dog) and Wu (Horse) branches reaching the Li palace. When yang lines are heavy and yin lines appear, the yin (rainy) judgment is certain; when yin lines transform into yang, the yang (clear) judgment is not verified. Ren and Bing indicate lightning flashing while grains receive moisture; Yi and Geng indicate thunder and rain intermingling while the year's harvest prospers. The Response line facing the White Tiger becomes an empty pretense; when Gou Chen overcomes the World line, it is likewise useless. When Xuan Wu overcomes the body, grain harvest may be collected; when the fire spirit harms the World line, damage befalls the farmer.
Pure yang and stillness often indicate drought; pure yin in motion causes the four seas to circulate freely. When inner and outer trigrams generate each other and odd-even lines combine harmoniously, rain pours in torrents, and one may listen to the gurgling flow of water. When thunder balefulness and the water spirit both enter the Kan palace, one need not worry about lack of rain but rather fear floods. When the fire spirit transforms into water with the addition of Dragon and Tiger, the east is just overcast while a rainbow already appears in the west. If the dragon line does not move but the Xuan Wu water moves, one vainly strains one's eyes toward the firmament. If one wishes to ask on what day rain will arrive: it is the day when water prospers, the dragon is born, and the body is opposite to it in the stem-branch cycle. If the Dragon, Water, Body, and Thunder all remain unmoved, then the nine rivers and four lakes are all sealed by heaven.

When Gen fire and the Mountain interact, a clear spell can be determined; when water declines and fire flourishes, the sunlight is bright. For divining clear weather, only observe Geng meeting Jia; for divining rain, do not allow Jia to transform into Geng. When Geng and Jia mutually interact with the assistance of Dragon and Tiger, fierce winds and torrential rain accompany the sound of thunder. When the fire spirit shakes and moves into the Li position, the brilliant golden crow (sun) ripples its crimson wheel.

Whenever one divines about weather, the movement of water indicates rain, and the movement of fire indicates clear weather. The movement of wood indicates wind arising; the movement of earth indicates overcast gloom; the movement of the metal line indicates heavy, sinking rain.
🌧 (IV)
When the Wealth line rises, it indicates clouds and rain; when the Officer line rises, it indicates thunder; when the Offspring line moves, it indicates rosy clouds and clearing skies. When the Father line moves, it indicates alternating clearing and rain; when the Sibling line moves, it indicates wind, hail, snow, and frost as mutual assault.
For divining rain: Take the first line as clouds, the second line as lightning, the third line as wind, the fourth line as thunder, the fifth line as rain, and the sixth line as heaven. If the first line moves, clouds rush like iron cavalry; if the second line moves, lightning lashes like golden serpents; if the third line moves, fierce winds uproot trees; if the fourth line moves, thunder shakes mountains and rivers; if the fifth line moves, torrential rain pours down; if the sixth line moves, rivers overturn and seas topple.
For divining clear weather: Take the first line as clouds, the second line as dew, the third line as rosy clouds, the fourth line as rainbow, the fifth line as sun and moon, and the sixth line as heaven. If the first line moves, clouds return to rocky caverns; if the second line moves, dew drips from flower tips; if the third line moves, rosy clouds brighten brocade; if the fourth line moves, a rainbow bridges the ford; if the fifth line moves, the sun spreads its fiery umbrella; if the sixth line moves, heaven soaks in a frozen jade vessel.
When water transforms into fire, sudden rain turns to clear brightness; when fire transforms into water, clear weather turns to rain. When the six lines lack both water and fire and encounter emptiness, the weather will be neither clear nor rainy but overcast.
This section establishes a complete system for weather divination through the Six Lines. The core logic combines Five Element attributes with four other systems—Eight Trigram directions, Six Kinship movements and transformations, Six Spirits approaching lines, and line position ascending and descending—to form refined judgments about weather changes. The fundamental principle is: water movement indicates rain, fire movement indicates clear weather, wood movement indicates wind, metal movement indicates overcast, earth movement indicates gloom. Simultaneously, it emphasizes that hexagram pattern combinations take priority over single-line judgments—for example, when thunder balefulness and the Kan palace lines appear together, although water movement ordinarily indicates rain, when thunder balefulness arrives simultaneously, one judges torrential rain or even flooding.
From the perspective of modern meteorology, this system is essentially empirical probabilistic induction. Ancient agrarian society's dependence on weather gave rise to highly detailed divination rules, whose underlying logic views weather changes as the interaction of heaven and earth's yin-yang qi: when yang qi flourishes, it is clear; when yin qi flourishes, it rains; when yin and yang clash, thunder and rain intermingle; when yin contains yang within, it alternates between clearing and raining. At a philosophical level, this echoes modern meteorology's descriptions of pressure systems, frontal activity, and moisture conditions—all are observations and deductions of energy interaction states between heaven and earth. "When heaven and earth do not interact, moisture does not descend" reveals the ancients' profound understanding of heaven-human resonance: weather is the product of communication between heaven's and earth's qi. This concept connects with modern systems theory's open systems thinking—no meteorological phenomenon is an isolated event but rather the result of interactions among the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. "When yin and yang unite, one feels gratitude toward the Heavenly Lord" embodies the value of yin-yang harmony: extreme weather is seen as an imbalance of yin and yang, while favorable weather is a symbol of cosmic order. Although this thinking that links natural phenomena with moral order carries era limitations, its embedded reverence for nature remains inspirational when addressing climate change today.
🌾 (I)
The Response line represents the seeds, and the World line represents the fields. When World and Response generate each other, the harvest is complete and perfect. If seeds overcome the fields, there is still minor auspiciousness; when the World line overcomes the Response line, it indicates a year of frugality. When Wealth is prosperous and flourishing, seedlings are abundant and sufficient. When Offspring moves and activates, it is heaven's bestowed blessing. If the Azure Dragon and Heavenly Joy are further stacked, harvests ripen across high and low, near and far.
When Offspring moves in harmony with the Heavenly Talisman, and Wealth with the Azure Dragon line appears upon the branches: without balefulness or clashes, granaries are fully stocked. But if one encounters the Great Dissipation or Small Dissipation, all turns to emptiness. When Officer lines alternate and are heavy, judgments become difficult: metal Officer indicates locust plagues; fire Officer indicates drought. When the Great Balefulness shares the palace, no harvest is gathered at all; even when the Joy Spirit moves, the yield is halved. If the Officer line supports water, water damage harms the crops; when wood and earth are both empty, there is no concern. When Officer transforms into Wealth, late planting is advisable; when Wealth intersects the Father line, double auspicious omens appear.
When the Officer line is prosperous and flourishing, there is no hope at all; when the Officer falls into emptiness, the situation reverses. When the Wealth line rises in the outer trigram, it indicates late sowing; when the Azure Dragon moves in the inner trigram, early transplanting is indicated. When the six lines are quiet, seedlings are stable and auspicious; when chaotic movement occurs, young sprouts must suffer calamity. When Wealth and the two Dissipations move together in the same line, even if ripe, know that only half enters the granary. When Wealth rises in the inner trigram, the harvest is a thousandfold; when Wealth falls into emptiness, there will surely be damage. When the Azure Dragon and Offspring are taken together as the same category, overcoming the body and holding the World line indicates limitless grain. If one encounters the Vermilion Bird moving heavily, it is inauspicious; the White Tiger baring its fangs is likewise unfavorable. When Xuan Wu additionally joins with the Officer line, even if harvested, it only serves to pay official grain taxes.
The Huo tian Da You (Fire Heaven, Great Possession) hexagram indicates complete ripeness; the Di huo Ming Yi (Earth Fire, Brightness Hiding) hexagram indicates wasteland everywhere. When heaven and earth do not interact, do not harbor expectations; when yin and yang harmonize, good storage is assured. Auspiciousness, inauspiciousness, regret, and remorse can be clearly determined; the six positions and their interconnections must be examined carefully.
🌱 (II)
The six lines must not have the Officer approaching; six lines without Officer is most auspicious. If the Officer approaches the Ox position, cattle suffer damage; deduce the rest by analogy. If it encounters emptiness, investigate each one accordingly. All six lines fear emptiness; if not empty, most auspicious. Metal World generates insects; Fire World indicates full ripeness—if the World line belongs to Metal, insects appear; if it belongs to Fire, the harvest is great. Wood and Earth Worlds indicate abundant grain—if the World line belongs to Wood or Earth, that year brings a tenfold harvest. If no baleful spirits clash or overcome, that year is certain to yield ten times the grain. "Baleful spirits" refers to the Great Dissipation, Small Dissipation, and other inauspicious deities. If none exist, a tenfold harvest can be promised. If Zhen and Li combine in mutual coordination, it forms the Lei huo Feng (Thunder Fire, Abundance) hexagram, indicating a grand harvest omen—naturally abundant and cheerful.
🌿 (III)
Whenever one divines about farming, if Offspring is prosperous and Wealth is bright, it indicates a bountiful year. When the Sibling line alternates heavily, beware of damage; when the Father line rises, one truly fears incompleteness.
🌻 (IV)
The World line is steadfast, representing the year and the fields; the Response line is regretful, representing seeds and wasteland. When World overcomes Response, granaries accumulate; when outer overcomes inner, granaries empty. The first line is the field, the second is seeds, the third governs growth, the fourth indicates sprout quality, the fifth line is the crop and governs harvest, the sixth is the farmer and governs calamity. When the Officer of the first line overcomes, the field is thin and barren; when the Officer of the second line overcomes, replowing and reseeding are necessary; when the Officer of the third line overcomes, weeds abound; when the Officer of the fourth line overcomes, cultivation efforts are wasted. When the Officer of the fifth line overcomes, the harvest is obstructed; when the Officer of the sixth line overcomes, worry about illness.
When Metal is the Officer, drought and insects are many; when Fire is the Officer, great drought and famine years; when Water is the Officer, flooding; when Wood is the Officer, depletion and loss; when Earth is the Officer, none of it is appropriate. Generally, when the Officer is empty and Wealth is prosperous, it indicates an abundant year with joyful ease.
This section constructs an agricultural harvest Six Lines prediction model. The core logic takes: World line as fields, Response line as seeds, Wealth as harvest yield, Offspring as blessing/protection, Officer as calamity, and Father as cultivation conditions. The judgment principle is summarized as: Offspring prosperous and Wealth bright indicates bountiful harvest; Officer approaching lines indicates reduced yield; six lines quiet indicates stability; chaotic movement indicates calamity. Among the most distinctive features is the correspondence between Five Elements and disaster types: Metal Officer indicates locust plagues, Fire Officer drought, Water Officer flooding, Wood Officer depletion, Earth Officer poor soil fertility—a product of combining Five Element attributes with agricultural disaster experience.
From the perspective of modern agricultural economics, this divination model can be viewed as an early form of agricultural production risk assessment. Its methodological core is multi-factor cross-analysis: soil conditions (World line), seed quality (Response line), climate status (Five Element Officer lines), input levels (Father line), and market factors (Wealth line). "When World and Response generate each other, the harvest is complete" embodies the agricultural philosophy of human-land harmony: the relationship between land and seeds is a metaphor for the unity of subject and conditions. Modern sustainable agriculture's emphasis on soil health and crop adaptability is an echo of this ancient wisdom. "Six lines quiet, seedlings stable and auspicious; chaotic movement brings disaster to young sprouts" implies the agricultural management philosophy that stability is superior to excessive intervention—over-intervention (chaotic movement) often brings more risk than natural equilibrium (quiet), aligning with modern ecological agriculture's concept of reducing human interference.

For dwellings, do not divine the Huo Ze Kui (Fire Lake, Opposition) hexagram—when the Officer ghost approaches the population lines, separation is certain. When the Azure Dragon intersects the Da Zhuang (Great Strength) hexagram, both people and wealth prosper; when the White Tiger joins the Tong Ren (Fellowship) hexagram, the residence declines. When the Da Xu and Xiao Xu hexagrams see the Azure Dragon, wealth and resources increase; when baleful spirits intersect twice over, beams and rafters are destroyed. When the noble spirit holds Zhen and Xun, it is the root of wealth generation; when the joy spirit enters the Feng Lei (Wind Thunder) hexagram, it lays the foundation of blessings. When Li and Kan alternate heavily, one should be cautious; when Gen and Kun are quiet, do not move.
A household without corvée labor is divined by the Ben (Adornment) hexagram; a family with surplus grain is predicted by the Yi (Nourishment) hexagram. Fields and residences flourish due to the Da You (Great Possession) hexagram; blood injuries and wealth damage come from the Ming Yi (Brightness Hiding) hexagram. When Qian and Kun are prosperous and flourishing, population increases; when the Ze Di (Lake Earth) hexagram generates, treasure resources accumulate. The Ge (Revolution) and Ding (Cauldron) hexagrams indicate that the eldest son can manage affairs; the Jin (Progress) and Sheng (Ascending) hexagrams indicate that the head of household has managerial ability. When Wealth flourishes in the inner trigram, it is judged by wealth; when Officer alternately rises, it is deduced as the activity of anomalous forces.
Wood Officer indicates a funeral coffin stopped for some days; Metal Officer indicates hard objects have accumulated for long. In decline, bronze and iron are predetermined; in prosperity, gold and silver are known in advance. Water Officer indicates appearance from wells and ponds; Earth Officer indicates secret viewing from within walls. Fire Officer moving in the inner trigram indicates no other matters, only that ancient artifacts shine again after many years. When it overcomes the World or the body, neither is useful; only when it generates the body or the World is it considered worthy. When Water Wealth flourishes in the inner trigram, well-digging is appropriate; when inner Earth Wealth moves, a pond can be made. When Metal Wealth is prosperous, the entry of gold and jade is indicated; when Fire Wealth moves from within, flying light indicates fire risk. When Wood Wealth ultimately prevails, construction is favorable; if it encounters emptiness, everything is wrong. When Offspring falls into emptiness, the family faces extinction of descendants; when Father falls into emptiness, the residence becomes endangered. When Father, Offspring, and Wealth lines are all prosperous, abundant wealth needs no doubt. Further aided by Heavenly Joy and Azure Dragon, riches, honor, health, and tranquility are heaven's gift.
📋 (II)
For all divination of household good and ill fortune: the first line is the well, the second is the stove, the third is the bed and mat. The well being an inner object appears in the first line; the stove, being outside the well, appears in the second line; the bed and mat, being outside the stove, appear in the third line. The fourth line is the gate and door; the fifth is the people. Gates and doors being outside the bed and mat appear in the fourth line; people, being masters of the house, appear in the fifth line. The sixth line is the ridgepole and walls. Being the outermost objects, they appear in the sixth line.
All six lines quiet: people and dwelling at peace—when divining a residence, if the six lines are all quiet, regardless of other omens, the dwelling will be secure and stable. Now examine carefully each moving line—if among the hexagram's lines there is one that moves, deduce according to which line it is, and good or ill fortune cannot escape scrutiny.
Officer ghost reaching the gate: the family is not at peace—if the Officer ghost is in the fourth line, it indicates disputes and litigation. Python Snake (Teng She) and monsters disturb dreams with fright—Teng She inherently governs strange and unnatural matters; if it moves in the fourth line, the appearance of monsters is indicated, and household members suffer nightmares. Baleful lines prosperous and flourishing: official calamity arises—for residence divination, the most feared is Gou Chen moving. Ghost Valley's method for the Gou Chen baleful line: in the first month it rises at Chen, second month at Mao, retreating one position each month. For example, divining a residence in the first month: if the Chen line moves, it is the baleful line flourishing, indicating official calamity arising. Baleful fortune encountering decline and rest: illness is born—prosperous indicates official disputes; declining indicates illness.
When the six heavy moving lines carry much wood and earth—it indicates either new construction or repairs; even if not building anew, wall repairs must be undertaken. When the six heavy moving lines carry much water and fire—it indicates disasters of flood and fire. If further encountered with emptiness and baleful harm, it indicates ruin, waste, and diminished population.
The first line is the young child; the second line is wife and concubines. The young child being of lowest rank occupies the first line; wives and concubines, being above the young child, occupy the second line. The third line is the next-elder brother and the elder brother—the next-elders are uncles and brothers, positioned in the third line. The fourth line is the mother's position; the fifth is the father's. The fifth line being the most honorable position, and the mother traditionally following the father, therefore the fourth line is the mother and the fifth is the father. The sixth line is ancestral residence and grave mounds—being the position of highest honor, aside from ancestral residence and tombs nothing is more honored, thus appearing in the sixth line.
For the five-element relatives, further examine the application—match the natal element of the relative in question with the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches of the hexagram's lines. Thus the fortune of the entire family naturally becomes clear. Generally, when one wishes to discuss blood wealth (six domestic animals), carefully examine and arrange it within the hexagram. Count from the first line to the fourth, fifth, and sixth: chicken, dog, pig, sheep, ox, horse, in that order. First chicken, second dog, third pig, fourth sheep, fifth ox, sixth horse. Possessing form without qi results in injury and loss—examine whether the animal's corresponding line possesses form and qi. Form is the animal's natal branch; qi refers to its flourishing or decline. Possessing qi without form means survival and breeding—for example, divining about sheep and the fourth line is Wealth: having qi without form is auspicious. Still search among the twelve zodiac animals—each of the six domestic animals has its zodiac branch; apply the previous method accordingly. Wei (Goat) is sheep, Chou (Ox) is the ox; seek the Kun ox and Qian horse within the hexagram. Further discuss prosperity/decline, flourishing/decline, and imprisonment.
When Qian and Dui are in decline and imprisonment, pots and cauldrons break down—Qian and Dui belong to Metal; if they encounter decline/imprisonment, it indicates broken and incomplete cooking vessels. When the hexagram encounters dead qi, how could it be auspicious? When Kan declines: ancient wells and withered ponds—Kan is inherently a water image; if it encounters decline/imprisonment, the family has dried wells and withered ponds. When Li declines, the stove ghost will bring calamity—Li is fire; if it encounters decline/imprisonment, the family's stove god wishes to cause misfortune. When Zhen and Xun are injured, beams and rafters collapse; when Kun and Gen are injured, earth movement comes—Zhen and Xun belong to wood; if baleful spirits injure them or they meet death/exhaustion, the collapse of beams and columns is certain; Kun and Gen belong to earth; if clashed/overcome or in decline, the collapse of walls and sinking of earth is certain. When the Zhen and Xun hexagrams are repeatedly prosperous in the trigram, the wood image flourishes, and construction of new towers and buildings begins. When Kun and Gen in the hexagram carry both balefulness and Officer—on a Bing-Ding day one obtains the Di Shan Qian (Earth Mountain, Humility) hexagram: if the second line is Officer and is the Gou Chen baleful line, then Kun and Gen carry both balefulness and Officer, and one knows that graves and tombs are about to bring calamity.
Inner trigram is the residence; outer trigram is the people—the residence precedes the people occupying it, therefore the residence is inner and the people are outer. Another interpretation says: if divining a residence not yet occupied, the outer is the people; if already occupied, consider whether the outer is a different dwelling. This interpretation also has merit; I retain both. When inner and outer generate each other, the residence may be cherished—if the inner trigram generates the outer, the residence can be nurtured and intimate, like the Shan Tian Da Xu (Mountain Heaven, Great Accumulation) hexagram. If the residence overcomes the people, they are unsteady—if inner overcomes outer, residents suffer entanglements, disputes, and illness, like the Huo Ze Kui (Fire Lake, Opposition) hexagram. If the people can overcome the residence, dwelling is without hardship—if outer overcomes inner it is auspicious; one can repair the old and build anew, renovate and create, like the Feng Ze Zhong Fu (Wind Lake, Inner Trust) hexagram.
When disaster-ridden and baleful lines alternate heavily, calamity visits—the Officer baleful moving, therefore the family's fortunes decline and misfortunes injure. The misfortunes of the Wandering Soul and Eight Pure Hexagrams—divining a residence that yields a Wandering Soul or Eight Pure hexagram indicates consecutive years of misfortune. When the World is in the second or third line, it is greatly auspicious—for dwelling divination, second-generation and third-generation hexagrams are greatly auspicious. When the body resides in the third or fourth line, follow the constant order—if the body is in the third or fourth line, one may safely maintain constancy and quietude. When the World branch overcomes the Response, how could it be good? —if the World overcomes the Response, it is not auspicious. When World and Response generate each other, blessings can arrive—when World and Response generate each other, blessings and fortunes extend far and wide.
When the original palace is prosperous, the dwelling may be tenable—at the Beginning of Spring, Zhen flourishes and Gen assists; whether these two palaces bring desirable residences. When the trigram within falls into decline/imprisonment, calamity is as yet unremoved—at the Beginning of Spring, Kun is resting and Dui is imprisoned; these two palaces are thus unlucky for residence. When Wealth moves, the wife has disease—if the Wealth line moves, the wife's palace harbors regret. When emptied and dead, children face solitude—with emptiness and dead qi, children face genuine solitude. Suddenly encountering the White Tiger, the family prepares for weeping—for the White Tiger baleful example: it rises at Shen in the first month, You in the second, proceeding through the twelve positions; if this line moves, the household will hear mourning. More with the Funeral Gate baleful: sudden illness and death—for the Funeral Gate example: first month Wei, second month Chen, third month Chou, fourth month Xu; only these four positions rotate through the twelve months, if this baleful agency comes to one of the three inner lines and moves, the household death by sudden onset follows.
When yin transforms into yang, worry for the women—yin becomes yang: disease among females. When yang transforms into yin, harm for the husband—yang becomes yin: calamity for males. When divination can thusily extend categories to what compares, heaven, earth, and the spirits respond and enlighten.

When people divine questions about the home, weigh the five categories within: none may be overcome.
