Chapter 12 of 20
卜筮全书
In the beginning, when heaven and earth were still in chaos, all things had not yet differentiated. Pangu established the Supreme Ultimate and divided yin and yang into two forms; Fuxi fixed yin and yang and drew the Eight Trigrams; King Wen of Zhou expounded the Changes; Confucius composed the Commentaries on the Hexagrams. Within the sixty-four hexagrams one examines the interplay of flying and hidden [lines]; within the three hundred and eighty-four lines one determines fortune and misfortune. The Way of Change encompasses heaven and earth, and can know causes beyond the material world; its principle corresponds to qian and kun, and how much more to the fortunes and misfortunes of the human realm.
When people come to seek divination, it is invariably because they harbor doubts about movement, stillness, fortune, and misfortune in their hearts; when scholars practice divination, they must recognize the distinctions between shallow and deep, high and low. Though the secret teachings are transmitted by word of mouth, their subtlety truly originates from the natural. Affairs may differ in a thousand ways, yet the principle behind them is no different. One must recognize that within stillness there is movement, and understand that fortune harbors hidden misfortune. Stillness is the precursor to movement; fortune is the root of misfortune. If the hexagram is quiet, search specifically for hidden movements and voided (kongwang) lines; if one sees lines in motion, examine fortune and misfortune to distinguish creation and transformation. When all lines are auspicious, one must still guard against fortune hiding misfortune; when the great image is entirely inauspicious, one must recognize that within misfortune there is fortune. If there is chaotic movement, first examine the useful line. The useful line has the distinction of self and other; gain and loss are decided by decline and vigor. In the six lines above and below, fortune and misfortune all hinge on the Day Sovereign; within a single hexagram, the governing principle is nothing other than the World and Response lines. Carefully examine the phases of growth, vigor, death, and retreat; meticulously analyze the interactions of overcoming, harming, punishment, and clashing. Fortune and misfortune are thus distinguished; calamity and blessing are determined from this. When the Nobleman rides the Lu and Horse stars, though there be no celebration, there is also no disaster; when the Heavenly Joy meets the Azure Dragon, though one encounters sorrow, there will ultimately be joy. The White Tiger moving is originally not a favorable condition, yet in matters of childbirth it becomes an auspicious deity; the Descendant star arising is always called auspicious, but when asking about office it is a malicious guest. The Officer ghost should not hold the World position—for seeking fame and marriage it is appropriate; the Wealth deity is suited to support the body—but for the Parent, documents, and letters, it is to be feared. The Dark Warrior governs secret matters and loss; the Coiling Serpent governs strange occurrences and empty frights. The Vermilion Bird principally governs litigation, yet for officials it brings delight; the Hook Snake's office is devoted to fields and land, and for travelers it signals eventual delay.
In all divination of personal destiny, first examine the useful line. In the beginning of creation, the human body came first, then all things; hence the first chapter discusses personal destiny. One must not rashly use hexagram names to make arbitrary judgments. To dissect high and low, one must investigate the movement and stillness, vigor and decline of the useful line, along with punishment, clashing, harming, overcoming, and voiding—taking its essential reality to determine fortune and misfortune, nobility and baseness, worthiness and foolishness. Dukes, marquises, and earls are determined by this.
Punishment, overcoming, harming, and clashing determine the gains and losses of a lifetime.
Punishment (xing): The Three Punishments. Zi (Rat) punishes Mao (Rabbit), Mao punishes Zi; Yin (Tiger) punishes Si (Snake), Si punishes Shen (Monkey), Shen punishes Yin; Chou (Ox) punishes Xu (Dog), Xu punishes Wei (Goat), Wei punishes Chou; Chen (Dragon), Wu (Horse), You (Rooster), and Hai (Boar) punish themselves. The punishments mentioned above are the inversion of yin and yang virtue. Whenever divining, there are Day Sovereign punishments and moving-line punishments. If it punishes the Parent, then one's parents suffer harm; if it punishes the Wealth line, then wife or concubine is injured. When flesh and blood encounter punishment, none escape injury. Observe in which period (xian) it occurs, and you will know in which year the harm transpires. All other cases follow this pattern.
Overcoming (ke): When yin and yang are not in harmony, they overcome each other. Whenever one encounters Wealth and Descendant auspicious deities overcoming me, it is still fortunate; when the ghost and baleful deities overcome me, it is greatly inauspicious.
Harming (hai): The six harms that pierce the heart. This occurs when grace has not yet been pledged but resentment has already arisen. Zi clashes with Wu, and Wu combines with Wei—this is called Zi-Wei mutual harm; Yin clashes with Shen, and Shen combines with Si—this is called Yin-Si mutual harm; Mao clashes with You, and You combines with Chen—this is called Mao-Chen mutual harm. All others follow this pattern. When the six harms appear, blood relations become distant, the six kindred grow apart, husband and wife discord, sons and daughters are difficult to obtain.
Clashing (chong): Zi-Wu, Mao-You, Chen-Xu, Chou-Wei, Yin-Shen, and Si-Hai oppose each other. There are year clashes, month clashes, Day Sovereign clashes, and World-Response clashes. Whenever Wealth and Descendant meet with clashing, it is inauspicious; when ghost and baleful deities meet with clashing, it is auspicious. Although a line may be quiet, seeing a clash makes it a hidden movement; moving lines encountering clash are dispersed; voided lines encountering clash are no longer void. Clash brings movement, movement brings conflict, and conflict brings contention.
Vigor and decline, movement and stillness, determine the glory and withering of the three periods. There is the vigor and decline of the greater image, and the vigor and decline of the line images. Whenever divining personal destiny, obtaining a vigorous greater image is also a good point—it can be called a sturdy foundation; if one also obtains auspicious line images, this is a complete creation. In general, a vigorous hexagram is not as good as vigorous lines. A person's roots are tied to the hexagram, not to the lines; the fortune and misfortune of one's destiny lie in the lines, not in the image. Moreover, observe movement and stillness, fortune and misfortune—the glory and withering of the three periods are truly decided from this.
Encountering Wealth and Descendant brings wealth, honor, and glory. Although Wealth and Descendant are auspicious deities, if they encounter vigor and have vitality, or bear the Nobleman and advancement deities, and are situated in a favorable position within the hexagram, and come to give birth to and combine with the World line—for the noble, advancement in rank and salary; for the wealthy, the sprouting of fortune and profit. If the Day Sovereign, month general, and Azure Dragon are in the same position, this is great vigor and great flourishing. Even if confronted by the Coiling Serpent or White Tiger, it is not inauspicious. Minor setbacks cannot harm the greater body. But if it is broken by clashing and harmed by overcoming, then it is useless. In all divination, observe in which period it stands, and you will know when it will flourish. If it is in the outer three lines of the primary hexagram, or the inner three lines of the transformed (secondary) hexagram, this is called "gaining position." If it is in the inner three lines of the primary hexagram, it is called "falling into a pit." If it is in the outer three lines of the transformed hexagram, it is called "the blessing of later years."
Encountering Sibling and Ghost brings poverty and ruin. The Sibling and Officer ghost lines are neither auspicious deities. If one encounters Sibling in motion within the hexagram, there will be contention, disputes, divisions of households; or depletion and loss of wealth, or languid livelihood—all due to this. The Officer ghost governs disease, illness, and difficulties. Paired with Vermilion Bird and official talisman, there are verbal disputes and official calamities; paired with Dark Warrior and Heavenly Thief, there is flight, loss, and theft; paired with White Tiger and Mourning Gate, it signifies death and mourning garments. In all divination, if one encounters these without vitality and unmoving, it is tolerable; vigorous and moving is most inauspicious. If dispersed by clash, harmed by overcoming, or falling into void, then within such periods, peace itself is a blessing. If it is in the outer three lines of the primary hexagram or the inner three lines of the transformed hexagram, it is most unfavorable. Just at the age of establishing oneself, encountering such baleful entities—how could there be a sign of flourishing fortune? If it occurs in early years, there will be hardship and disaster; if in later years, there will ultimately be no good outcome.
The World is the root of one's entire life; the Response should be the wife of a hundred years. In one's lifetime, nobility and baseness, high and low—what kind of person one becomes is determined primarily by the World line. If it obtains the Heavenly Nobleman, salary star, and Horse star standing together, with auspicious deities supporting and nurturing it, and no baleful baleful spirits clashing or harming it, this is a foundation of wealth and nobility, a character of purity and high standing. If it stands together with baleful spirits, or is punished and clashed by evil baleful spirits, with no other auspicious deity to rescue and release it, this is a sign of poverty and baseness, a portent of non-accomplishment. If the World encounters void, this is most inauspicious—there will be great difficulties. Only for practitioners of the nine crafts, diviners, and Buddhist monks or Daoist priests is this instead an auspicious omen. For them, it is acquiring wealth with empty hands—wealth comes and goes, never accumulating.
The World and Response lines are the masters of the entire hexagram. In all divination, take the World as oneself and the Response as one's wife. If it stands together with the Azure Dragon auspicious deity, the wife will surely be virtuous; if it stands together with the Peach Blossom (Xianchi) and Dark Warrior, the wife will surely be wanton. If the World has no vitality and is overcome by the Response, the wife will surely usurp the husband's authority. If the Response falls into void, the wife's palace suffers harm. When they give birth to and combine with each other, the couple will surely grow old together, eyebrows meeting as one; when they overcome and clash with each other, then daily are their brows knit in mutual resentment. If the World and Response obtain mutual birth and combination, a lifetime is like fish in water; if they meet with mutual overcoming and clashing, a hundred years seem like ice thrown upon coals. Where birth and combination encounter clash, initial harmony is later broken by others' scheming. If the Response comes to overcome the World, this is originally not good—yet if a moving line overcomes the Response, or if broken by the Day Sovereign's clash, then although the beginning is discordant, later someone offers persuasion, and harmony is ultimately achieved. If World and Response are in mutual harmony, naturally the two sides are equal in status.
When the Wealth line moves, the Parent suffers harm; when Sibling arises, the wife's palace is doubled. If the Wealth line holds the World or moves, then the Parent is harmed—the person will surely lose parents early, or be adopted into another family, leaving ancestral line, and call new parents father and mother. If Sibling overlaps heavily or sits upon the World position, the person's wife palace is injured—surely the string of marriage will be broken and re-tied, remarrying in later years. If the Parent moves, then there are difficulties with children; if the Officer ghost arises, it harms the elder and younger brothers. Only when the Descendant holds the World and the Wealth line has vitality is one's livelihood natural for a lifetime—drawing close to the worthy and near to the noble, in eternal peace and harmony. If it is in a collateral position, the calamity is slightly reduced. That is to say, when former wife, wealth, and siblings are not upon the World line but move in other lines, the disaster is somewhat tolerable. From this, students should naturally understand the principle of adaptation.
If the Xianchi baleful deity sits upon the body, one's origins will certainly be lowly and mean. If the Xianchi baleful deity sits upon the World line or upon the Parent line, it indicates one is born into a humble and lowly household. If, moreover, the hexagram lacks the Nobleman and auspicious deities, the person is surely not one of lofty character.
If the Lu and Horse stars and Nobleman hold the World, one's standing in life must be pure and lofty. The Nobleman refers to the Heavenly Nobleman (tianyi guiren). In all divination, if one obtains the Nobleman holding the World and the Lu and Horse stars in the same direction, the person surely stands pure and lofty—one must not declare them a common person.
If the hexagram attains the Six Clashes, half a lifetime of schemes will be hindered. Zi-Wu, Mao-You, and the like constitute the Six Clashes. Whoever divines this in their chart will find that their affairs have beginnings but no endings—many failures, few successes. If the former hexagram has the Six Clashes, then the first thirty years of livelihood are cold; if the latter hexagram has the Six Clashes, then after thirty years there is gradual decline; if both before and after encounter the Six Clashes, then a whole lifetime cannot accomplish anything. Even if there are auspicious deities among the lines, affairs will still encounter obstacles.
If the lines meet with the Six Combinations, a lifetime of action will be harmonious. The Six Combinations are the combinations of Zi-Chou and the like. In all divination, if the hexagram meets with the Six Combinations, the person is harmonious, pleasing, elegant, and good at mingling with others. Many plans succeed, and movements are unobstructed. If the former hexagram has the Six Combinations, then the first thirty years carry the spring breeze at every step; if the latter hexagram has the Six Combinations, then after thirty years fortune gushes forth abundantly. If both before and after meet with the Six Combinations, then a lifetime is as one wills, and honor and glory arrive in old age.
When a man bears combination, he is handsome, intelligent, and clever—delightful if it sees the Azure Dragon, Wealth, and Descendant. Good and bad fortune within a hexagram cannot be discussed as if all were one, there are also distinctions of shallow and deep. For example, if the hexagram meets with the Six Combinations but the line images are all inauspicious, it is difficult to judge as auspicious. Yet one must consult the shallow and deep, dissect the high and low. If divining a male's destiny and the hexagram bears combination, it must see the Azure Dragon, Wealth, and Descendant vigorous and properly positioned to break off judgment: "handsome and intelligent gentleman." Following this pattern, there should seldom be error.
When a woman bears combination, it signifies frivolity, wantonness, and dissipation—one fears meeting the Dark Warrior and Xianchi. When a woman obtains the Six Combinations, it is not considered good. If there are auspicious deities and Noblemen in position, then there is no concern—instead it shows intelligence and elegance, with proper bearing and beautiful appearance. If the Dark Warrior and Xianchi are seen in position, she will surely be frivolous, wanton, and dissolute—unrestrained and improper, a woman whose conduct is not upright.
Encountering the Advancement deity, fortune flourishes and misfortune abounds; encountering the Retreat deity, fortune weakens and misfortune diminishes. The Advancement deities are: Jiazi, Jiawu, Jimao, Jiyou. The Retreat deities are: Renxu, Renchen, Dingchou, Dingwei. Whenever one encounters the Advancement deity with Wealth and Descendant auspicious deities, it is auspicious; with the ghost and baleful deities, it is inauspicious. In general, the Advancement deity brings prosperity to fortune and abundance to misfortune. The Retreat deity makes fortune scant and misfortune diminished.
When the Dark Warrior holds the World, the person is stingy and villainous; when the White Tiger supports the body, the disposition is obstinate, fierce, and vicious. When the Azure Dragon holds the World: the person is kind and harmonious, amiable, affable, and gracious to all. When the Vermilion Bird holds the World: quick of speech, much incurs slander, and loves to create disputes. When the Hook Snake holds the World: the person is steady and solid, but sluggish in action. When the Coiling Serpent holds the World: the person is scheming, without trustworthiness, insubstantial, deceptive, and fraudulent. When the White Tiger holds the World: the person is fierce, fond of bravery, cruel, and malicious of heart. When the Dark Warrior holds the World: the person nurses secret schemes, cunning and many-sided; if it resides alongside the Sibling, the person is covetous and stingy.
This is the fortune and misfortune of one entire life; one must yet speak of the glory and withering of the three periods. What has been stated above about good and ill fortune, calamity and blessing, is a comprehensive discussion of a lifetime's fortune and misfortune—still not yet addressing the three periods. The text now distinguishes the three periods to confirm the former statements. Gain and loss, glory and withering, are decided from this point onward.
The first line governs five years, the second line governs five years, the third line governs five years—fifteen years in all. The outer three lines also govern fifteen years—thirty years in total. The transformed hexagram also governs thirty years. Then observe where the lines have no obstruction, counting one year per position, up to the end of one's life.
The inner three lines govern fifteen years —when encountering auspicious deities, one enjoys the protection and shade of elders. When auspicious deities like the Nobleman, Lu, and Horse appear, in childhood one enjoys ready-made blessings under that protection—but one cannot yet break off as "becoming wealthy and influential." If the moving lines encounter the ghost and baleful spirits, from youth onward there will be many illnesses and calamities.
The outer three lines govern fifteen years —when encountering inauspicious deities, one suffers the bullying of the younger generation. From sixteen to thirty, right at the threshold of establishing oneself, one inevitably suffers being taken advantage of. If one sees the Officer ghost and evil deities in motion, much is due to petty people encroaching; in severe cases, government offices oppressing. One must examine the shallow and deep, then cut off good or ill fortune. If it is auspicious deities in motion, from this point one enjoys endless blessings.
To know when wealth and rank will flourish, the inner three lines of the transformed hexagram are the determinant. In human life, establishing family and enterprise all occurs between ages thirty and fifty. Before this, one's strength has not yet matured; past this, the years of opportunity have slipped away. Whenever divining about establishment, focus on the inner three lines of the transformed hexagram. If Wealth and Descendant are both complete here, there is the creation of success—even if late years are poor, there will ultimately be a foundation. If one encounters the ghost and baleful spirits, or void, a lifetime's schemes amount to nothing—vain toil in running about, no final harvest.
If one wants to judge life and death, the outer three lines of the transformed hexagram are the guiding principle. The outer three lines of the transformed hexagram govern fifteen years. From forty-five to sixty is known as the late scene—the time of conclusion. Without praise and without blame, it is merely a matter of lifespan. Upon observing approaching this point, one must look carefully with sharp eyes. If evil deities and wicked baleful spirits appear in overcoming battles, beware of collapse. Encountering auspicious deities, one meets danger without peril; encountering inauspicious ones, one meets with impediments and dies. If fortunate, though one passes through perilous places, calamity is turned into fortune—not reaching the point of crisis. If baleful, then the slightest hardship becomes great fault, until one reaches the extremity of death.
If the latter hexagram has no baleful spirits, search again upon the World of the former hexagram. Count one year per position, carefully and finely; from ten thousand deaths and ten thousand lives, this is decided. If the latter hexagram has no murders and misfortune, the lifespan extends past sixty. Then search from the World line of the former hexagram, one year per line, counting to the end of life. If every step encounters auspicious deities, the lifespan is long and far-reaching; if one meets wicked and evil deities, then one quickly descends to the Yellow Springs. Ten thousand deaths and ten thousand lives—from this, fixed.
Do not treat this crucial juncture by the standards of ordinary divination. Divining a person's destiny concerns the great creation and cannot be lightly adjudicated. One must silently explore the root cause, examine its vigor and decline, movement and stillness, harming, overcoming, punishment, and clash. Only when you yourself hold certainty dare you judge good and ill fortune for others and parse out gain and loss. Without examining shallow versus deep or high versus low—to pass judgment rashly yet be without error—such a thing does not exist.
Heavenly endowment is established at the origin of birth and cannot be changed today. It is not done by choice, nor is it within my power to intend; one can only receive it obediently. Husband and wife are the great cornerstone of human relationships, first honored since antiquity. Only after husband and wife do we have father and son; hence, among the Five Bonds, husband and wife take the first place.
The World is the groom, the Response is the marriage—they must engender and combine with each other. The World is the man's family and the Response is the woman's family. Mutual engendering and combination guarantee the image of completion. Where engendering and combination occur, beware of clashing and overcoming—fearing that what is about to succeed will be broken and obstructed. Where clashing and overcoming occur, if birth and support arrive, at a time of failure someone assists and mediates.
The ghost is the husband, the Wealth is the wife—most feared are mutual harming and punishment. Both Wealth and ghost should be vigorous to be auspicious; most to be feared are the Three Punishments and Six Harms arising in motion.
Yin and yang attaining their proper positions is best; husband and wife both complete brings auspicious accord. Yin-yang proper position has two senses: there is the hexagram image where outer is yin and inner is yang, and there is the situation where the Response is yin and World is yang. Both are "proper positions." One yin and one yang are called the Way; pure yin and pure yang are called specters. Pure yin does not generate; pure yang does not transform. One yin, one yang—this is husband and wife. Another teaching: to divine marriage, first examine the useful lines—Wealth and ghost—if both are complete, call it great fortune. Another is: a man divining a woman takes Wealth as the lord; a woman divining a man takes the ghost as the lord. The principle is the same. If Wealth or ghost do not appear in the hexagram, or fall into void, the marriage is difficult to complete; even if completed, it is inauspicious.
The World engenders the Response—it is the man seeking the woman; the Response engenders the World—it is the woman chasing the man. For instance, although the Response engenders the World, if it meets with the Tomb or Extreme Point [of decline], although there is mutual desire, they are still hesitating. If a moving line comes to engender it, one must rely on the matchmaker's good offices. If the World engenders the Response but the World is broken or clashed by the Day Sovereign, though the man's intent be keen, others interpose obstacles, and the matter becomes hard to accomplish.
If the World void, the man's heart retreats in regret; if the Response moves, the woman's intent surely changes. World void means the man regrets [the engagement]; Response void means the woman regrets. Even with auspicious deities, it is hard to succeed. If World and Response both move, the matter surely undergoes alteration. If, where they move, the Day Sovereign combines with them, even though you are unwilling, it will come to pass.
When World and Response are in mutual harmony, the completion owes wholly to the matchmaker; when yin and yang cross amid disorder, the matter is governed by karma. Mutual harmony between World and Response originally holds no principle of accomplishment by itself. If the matchmaker's line moves into unity with both World and Response, then it will be done. Yin-yang crossing amid disorder means the World and Response have not attained their proper positions. If great images allow, then the man will marry into the woman's family; if not, then husband and wife will trample each other [disharmoniously].
If the Response is vigorous, the wife's chambers are imposing and full; if the World is in the Tomb, the man's family is needy and poor. When a man divines about a woman, if the Response position matches the month's vigor, this indicates a family of perfect standing. If the monthly vigor is present but the daily decline marks current stagnancy, then the wealth of the family has been receding of late. When a woman divines about a man, she should demand vigor in the World line to reach a wealthy and noble home; if the World is entombed and declining, he is surely needy and poor. Even if his overall palace (ben gong) is vigorous, if both World and ghost decline, the wealth exists only in the name.
If the Descendant moves, [she] will midcourse sweep away the husband [i.e., his life]; if Sibling overlaps heavily, in the future it will surely cost the wife. The Descendant is a blessing. It cannot be absent from the hexagram, but it prefers stillness over movement. If it takes the Nobleman and auspicious deities and moves, then the wife seizes the husband's authority; alternatively—if the ghost is vigorous and unwounded by the chief hindrance with Heavenly Orphans or vicious baleful deities attending—it surely indicates he will be disastrously harmed. Vigor determines urgency; decline determines lingering. The Sibling is the line that overcomes Wealth; if it moves, one will surely lose his wife. If, however, the ghost moves, breaking up Yang phase with this—that is a rescue.
Wealth void loses the wife; ghost void orphans the husband. It is a major taboo for marriage divination for Wealth or ghost to be void; such essentially is a portent of breakage. If the stems and branches, and the World and Response phases prove mutually engendering, then [absent voiding] the better part of a couple's life is blessed.
One man meeting two Wealth in his favored years, second-charming both ways like wisteria and loose-strife. Looking on a beauty couple-wise: if there are two grudge-agents old yet potent, comes a second season of bright blossoms across the peach-stream fields. A man questioning for a prospective wife seeing a pair-lines of wealth where the one fatter/void, more alive/less promotes? We must discriminate. If a patrician finds double Wealth once vigorous and once voided concerning at least one prior love, it hints at a pioneer heading to becoming a double-time married lover, or if both strong-potted unharmed, regardless if peaches opening great flamboyeans one long-wed half-twain at the side-viri-chamber for mate-need. When a lady reads into what hunk-numbering tells of seeking husband-wise-in union men-child-sectors? She needs two ghosts to analyze as potential spouses which-a pick chance-fold newly once again, determined by yao. If void merely: old she-rites to remarry the funeral-weeded twain-hundredths to fate-for each another brave anew gate-men.
When Wealth moves, then harm strikes the father and mother-in-law; when the Parent rises, this shows trouble in child breeding. If Wealth holds the World, in wedded service one cannot in peace support father-mother-husband-states. When still it is tolerable, but once arising the authority strikes calamity.
